Excellent!
I picked up this book at the local library, and now I plan to buy it. Claire really knows her topic! My only quibble with the book (2nd edition) is that in a few places she didn't delete information from the 1st edition, but merely superimposed a black box saying "trail closed" or "this restaurant is now closed". This is somewhat bizarre, and might be an editing/production error. In any case, this is a valuable guide that I want on my bookshelf!

Good Guidebook
I own a lot of summer and winter trail guides, and this is one of the best. It's quality and quantity, with dozens of trails all over the state, and also tours, races and even a few tips on cool places to eat and stay.It has maps showing the trailhead locations, but I wish it had topos too.Oh well, you can't have everything--and topos are the only thing missinghere. ... lotta history~
I got this from a friend was gonna get my own but really there wasn't much how to or don'ts. just lots of history. I was hoping for more modern shoes with equipment explanation.

godd review of snowshoeing
This was a good review of the history of snowshoeing, types of shoes, why you might want to pick one type over another.Gives you a feeling that you are living out the increasing popularity of the sport and technologic advancements in types of shoes and gear.Compares climate, snow conditions, terrain in various parts of the country.Good tips on preparedness for being outdoors in various conditions.

Absurd
This is the worst Mountaineers book I own. The information inside is completely outdated and useless. It concentrates on gear for 3/4 of the book (outdated gear) and gives little useful information. If you are looking for a book on the history of snowshoes, look no further. If you are looking for useful information try elsewhere. I'm usually too lazy to review most books, but this was just that horrible.

Well written
This well written book covers snowshoeing in depth (techniques, shoe and binding options, racing, history, and more) and related topics (winter camping, snow shelters, winter clothing, winter safety, winter route finding, and more).An experienced winter camper or snowshoer won't find too much that is new, but will no doubt get some fresh ideas from reading this book.For someone new to snowshoeing and winter camping, the book is recommended.

The first best book, but ...
Gene Prater was one of the leaders of the "modern" snowshoe movement. He and his brother developed Sherpa Snowshoes, the first aluminum frame, decked snowshoe. Today the market is just full of the offspring of Sherpas. When Gene passed away in 1993, his family passed on the book to Dave Felkley, a Colorado snowshoe instructor and guide. Dave has done a really good job at retaining Gene's original material, and updating it as needed. There is an exceptional chapter on snowshoeing history, which the Praters were such a big part of. It's a bit weak on "traditional" (or as Gene called them, "eastern", calling his own design "western") wood and web snowshoes, but never-the less it is a book that should be on any serious snowshoer or winter camper's shelf. ... The best outdoor guides I've ever read.This book targets the recreational snowshoer who might do strenuous day hikes, but doesn't attempt to be a detailed manual for the fanatic spending a week snow camping.IMHO, the book succeeds admirably in meeting the needs of its target audience.It covers all the basics - gear, clothing, the few elements of technique required for snowshoeing, and safety.The prose is very accessible, the pictures add a lot of warmth to the text, and there's even a chapter on snowshoe running.The author captures the feel of the snowshoes rather well and I often found myself nodding my head in agreement with the tips for climbing, descending and traversing that I had to learn by hard experience.I live in California and usually snowshoe in much warmer weather (mid-30s F) than the northeast or midwest, so the clothing suggestions are way too conservative for me - but that's the only fault I could find with the book.

There Are Better Snowshoe Books Out There
You can lump most of the newer snowshoe books together, and they are, ho hum, all about the same, that is not very good. They seem to be written by people that claim to be experts about everything to do with the outdoors, but I am not impressed with their knowledge of snowshoes or snowshoeing. "Hey everybody, lets go out and spend $300 on little dinky plastic and aluminum snowshoes, because it is THE thing to do", seems to be the battle cry of all these people. They always fill their books with lots of pictures of people climbing mountains, in attempt to impress us I guess. This is really impractical for a beginner, who is the real targeted audience for these books. The exception to this is the snowshoe book, "The Essential Snowshoer" recently written by Zwosta and even better the oldie "The Snowshoe Book" by Osgood and Hurley. These are better books, that explain the sport better, both past and present.

Lack of information on a basic topic
This book just touches the surface of a very basic subject (snowshoeing).There is not alot of information to cover and this book does not cover it leaving you wanting for more!Other books on the market do a much better job, even general mountianeering books.

Great Snowshoeing Book
This is an easy-to-read book that covers the essentials on virtually every aspect of snowshoeing. If you're new to the sport or have been on snowshoes a few times and could use some instruction, or are looking for fun things to do with the family, it's an easy book to read. The author obviously knows the sport well and shares it in a down-to-earth, no frills way. There's a brief history on how and where showshoeing began, fitness tips and recommendations on dressing and what other things to bring along on trips. This is an exciting story about Milton Daub, a "kid hero" who ventured out in the Great Blizzard of `88 to help his neighbors!
Ablizzard began to rage over the Northeastern United States in March of 1888.Little did anyone know that this massive storm would rage for three days.The "snow and ice buried the land from Maine to Maryland," yet the most amazing and frightening thing was that "thousands of birds fell frozen from bushes and buildings where they had huddled for shelter."Soon all communication was cut off and people in need of food and medicine were unable to travel from their homes.Trains were stranded and "waves damaged countless boats and sank more than two hundred of them," but there was a sharp witted, twelve-year-old boy in the Bronx named Milton Daub who was not one to be deterred by the Great Blizzard of `88.

Short But Sweet
This is an excellent book for someone looking to gain familiarity with the fast growing sport.Steven Griffin gives an excellent overview into many subjects.He discusses how snowshoes have developed over the years and how to pick the right ones.The improtance of bindings is nicely discussed.In addition, Griffin adds that snowshoeing is really quite easy to learn. Also key equipment is discussed in great detail.

Many valuable safety tips are provided as well.The author goes as far as how to rescue someone from an avalanche and key signs of danger to be on the lookout for. Example: Don't walk over partially frozen lakes.

This is a valuable book that can be read quite quickly as I finished it on a roundtrip commuter ride. ... Read more

Great Book... Great Urban Adventures
I was assigned this book back in 1998 when I took Prof Rockland's Urban Adventure course at Rutgers University one summer.I always got very nervous when the professor assigned a book that (s)he wrote.Was I pleasantly surprised!I was inspired, I was in awe of the adventures.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to get insprired to take an urban adventure - just walk out your door, and explore your hometown, see what you discover!

Entertaining tales of urban adventures
I gotta give the author some credit for participating in activities than millions of Americans do every day - canoeing, biking, hiking, etc.However, very, very few Americans do this along overdeveloped NJ highways or in urban drainage ditches that were once bucolic streams, so I give Mr. Rockland many bonus points for originality.

Rockland has a sharp, entertaining writing style that held my interest throught this book, and this collection of stories was a great complement to Looking for America on the NJ Turnpike, his first work. ... Read more
