5-0 out of 5 stars A Little Gem
I was quite surprised today to see a negative review of this cookbook, but when I saw that the reviewer had not actually made any of the recipes, that went a little ways towards explaining how anyone could give this book a negative review.

I am a gardener, and I bought this cookbook with the idea of collecting more recipes for the abundance of squash my garden typically produces.

I have made four of the recipes in this cookbook, and each has been a standout. The Moroccan meatball soup is fantastic (although all the chopping/dicing does make the prep a little time-consuming), and it only improves as a leftover.

I have made several recipes from this cookbook as gifts -- always to rave reviews and requests for the recipes.

I have purchased two additional copies of this cookbook as gifts.

This one's a winner, especially if you are a squash lover or a gardener.

5-0 out of 5 stars A few of my favorite, fail-proof recipes for fall
This little cookbook is a real gem.Specifically, the recipes for Orange-Frosted Pumpkin Muffins and Butternut Squash-Pear Bisque are among the fall staples in our house-- they're really delicious and uncomplicated to prepare.I love to cook with pumpkin year-round, and I found easy, inspired recipes in this book.I've enjoyed this cookbook enough to share it as a gift with fellow pumpkin-lovers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Worthless, but...
In my quest to find a really good, foolproof recipe book that uses squash and pumpkins, this book was a waste of time except for the beautiful photographs. Most of the recipes are so exotic and the ingredient list so long that I would never ever attempt to try them. Many of her recipes are just roasted meat with squash rounds served along side. In my opinion, this does not count as a squash recipe.

This is also a very small book, with only about 40 recipes. I read through this book more than twice looking for any recipe that I would actually make. None fit the bill. The only one that even stirred me was for middle eastern meatball and squash soup--but I didn't make her recipe. Instead I made my own with more familiar flavors and less ingredients.

Nice to look at, however totally impractical to use.

But... There is another book that I really enjoyed:

The Classic Zucchini Cookbook has tons of recipes for both summer and winter squash.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Solid Book from Lou Seibert Pappas
I have enjoyed other cookbooks by Lou Seibert Pappas (Creme Brulee; Ice Cream & Sorbet; Coffee Cakes) so I ordered this without first checking it out in a book store. It did not diappoint.

The first several chapters provide very helpful background about choosing, storing and cooking squash as well as listing the types of squash (both winter and summer squash varieties).

Many of the recipes are novel and are delicious-sounding pairing of ingredients that I haven't seen in other cookbooks (and I have a lot).More than half of the recipes are accompanied by a beautiful full-page color photo. As a vegetarian, I found many recipes I want to try but the Entrees chapter also includes a nice selection of recipes for meat eaters (from chicken to lamb, pork to fish).

Chapters include Breads and Breakfast (rosemary-polenta pumpkin muffins, zucchini-golden raisin quick bread, pumpkin-orange waffles with hazelnut-maple sryup butter); Soups, Salads and Sides (butternut squash-pear bisque, roasted butternut squash polenta with fried sage, goat cheese-stuffed squash blossom and heirloom tomato salad); Entrees (five-spice pork tenderloin with pumpkin half-moons and red grapes, grilled chicken breasts stuffed with zucchini and goat cheese, chayote stuffed with lamb and pine nuts); and Desserts (cranberry-pecan pumpkin drop cookies, candied ginger-pumpkin creme brulee, pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crust, caramel-glazed pumpkin date bars).

As you might expect, pumpkins are the most popular squash used throughout the book and appear in nearly half of the recipes.Other squashes featured include butternut, spaghetti, zucchini, chayote, kabocha, and acorn.Several recipes let you choose the winter or summer squash to use but, don't worry, there is a list from which to choose.

This would be a wonderful hostess gift in the fall if you are a guest for dinner or a weekend. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Grounds up approach to improvement
Steps to success is a comprehensive guide to the mechanics of squash. I really enjoyed the detailed drill diagrams and frame by frame pictures of the shots. The chapter on movement is especially helpful since it shows the difference between the traditional and more modern dynamic movement. One mistake I have is I don't bend enough into my shots. So the pictures helped emphasize that point. There are good drills for both solo practice as well as partner practice. Whenever I go on court I typically just do straight drives to myself. But the book has opened up quite a lot other drills I should be doing that are more challenging and interesting.

Overall the book is not something you can finish in a couple of weeks. You have to work on each specific shot for some time before moving on to other shots. There is a score sheet for each drill that tells you when you're ready to move onto the next step. If you are serious about improving your game from a grounds up approach, this is definitely the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Bear!
A book from my childhood that I have wanted for years! Perfect condition! Reasonable price - worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars The book I learned to read by myself
I could NOT believe my sister sent me this 1950s original of the story book that I loved so much as a child.I learned to read with Mr. Bear, and his cantankerous self has long been a cherished memory.Thank you Amazon.com and double hugs and kisses to my sister for finding the book no one else believed existed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This was my father's book which our Grandmother read to us all the time.I remember distinctly when she came and told us that the book had finally fallen apart.Twenty years later, my Grandmother recently passed away and I got thinking of this book and wanted to see if I could find an old print to share with my own kids.I was absolutely estatic to find it in print and bought it for me and my sister. It's a quirky little book that my 3 & 4 year old have really taken a liking too. It's been on the daily must read list for two months. This is a precious memory and one I'm glad to pass onto my children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smor
What a delightful book.Loved how the story evolved about a destructive bear and how the other animals managed to get the better of him.The pictures are bright and cheery, and the story made me laugh. Was a gift to my grandson. The title is crazy but it brought a laugh to my grandson and he made me read it right away -- several times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Bear Squash-You-All Flat
This is an exquisitely told tale, and a favorite of mine from childhood. The author's subtle humor and the wonderful illustrations by Angela have made "Mr. Bear" a true classic. I was disappointed, however, to find that some of the original text had been altered in the reissued edition....in the interest of Political Correctness, I suppose. It really does change the perception of the character. He was, after all, such a "stupid" bear. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is it an art book or is it a garden book?
Or perhaps it actually succeeds in being both.In a large and growing personal garden library, this is one of my favorite books.I turn to it again and again.First of all, the photographs are just amazing, managing to combine exquisite beauty with accurate representation of each particular squash. And how very unique many of the squashes do appear to be!However it is in the text that Amy Goldman's book really shines. The information is presented in a clear,easy-to-access format, yet the language is beguiling.I defy any gardener and food lover to read this book and not instantly want to track down half a dozen heirloom varieties to grow. They will be able to do just that, because the author lists see sources for all the varieties she includes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've Never Seen Such Glorious Squashes.
This book started it all for me. I love squashes and this is the book to read. It has all kinds of squash like some of my favorites are Marina Di Chioggia and Fordhook. If you order this book, DO NOT send it back. This book is highly recomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Book
If you are fascinated with winter squashes -- looking at them, growing them or preparing them for dinner, this is a really wonderful book.As a budding gardener and avid cook, I have become increasingly interested in winter squashes. It is so satisfying to grow them and cook with them -- also just to admire their gorgeousness. While reading about squashes in various places, nothing even comes close to the beauty of this book and the wonderful descriptions that help you recognize the qualities of each squash. After seriously reading it three times, I then went to the seed companies online because I will plant several of these squashes this summer. It's a great book for dreamers and gardeners and cooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Resource!
I love this book -- sometimes I think it spends more time off the bookshelf being thumbed through than resting on it. Here you have practically everything you need to grow squashes - what the squashes are best used for, some history of the various varieties, selecting seeds, growing and harvesting tips, and (extremely useful!)commercial sources of most of the seeds(many of which you can find easily online), all nicely organized by which Cucurbita species they belong to. (The growing guide to gourds is for C. pepo gourds, not Lagenaria species, and so the title is certainly appropriate growing C. pepo gourds, of which there are many) And recipes too -- so useful! Goldman is extremely helpful in pointing out the virtues and flaws of each variety for eating (though she tries some I wouldn't dare -- brave woman). The photographs are so beautiful as to be absolutely seductive -- watch out, you too will be saying to yourself 'I must grow that pumpkin/squash/gourd/whatever'. Then you too will be seeking out the seed suppliers, tenderly planting your new seeds and now in late summer, seeing them beginning to mature, turning into the fruit promised in the gorgeous photographs, murmur to yourself 'You are so beautiful, Sucrine du Berry. And Winter Luxury, you are the most elegantly lovely pumpkin I have ever seen..."

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one.
The Compleat Squash: A Passionate Grower's Guide to Pumpkins, Squashes, and GourdsWhat a great book.Good information about the squash family and recipes that are to die for.She will introduce you to a new world of a great vegetable. This book will become a family heirloom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read to kids, but also great for small stage shows
This is a great book - hilarious morality tale which children can understand, wonderful rhymes and beautifully illustrated too.

In this an old woman is complaining about how crowded her house is, it is in fact "A squash and a squeeze". She goes to an old man, who gives her some 'good advice' about taking in her farm animals until at last she throws them all out - and now she feels like she has more space than she could ever possibly need. Well, bear in mind it is a lot funnier when Julia Donaldson writes it!

This is a great book for pre-schoolers to act out - we read it out and the children get to be the various animals and be squashing and squeezing. You under 6's will really enjoy this one! But also get Room on the Broom and the Gruffalo by the same authors - glorious children's books all round.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute little book if you have some spare cash
I bought this book after I saw it read and acted out on Playschool (TV show in Australia). It's a great little rythmic book to read aloud and has endearing illustrations.A little old lady decides her house is much too small for her - a wise old man helps her to solve her problem by suggesting she move all her animals in to live with her (one by one).Of course, by the end of the story, the house is very squashy so she moves all the animals out and realises that her house is not that small after all!Good little tale for teaching children to appreciate what they have.Nothing too deep and meaningful, just a sweet little story. Not a must have but worth buying for your library if you have spare cash and already own some of the really special books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for a toddler
I bought this a couple of weeks ago for my 19-month old daughter and she loved it right away. She chimes in now with the key phrases that are repeated throughout the book like "a curious plan" and "my house is a squash and a squeeze"! (She obviously understands the latter phrase more than the former! I give her 'squash' and 'squeeze' hugs when we get to those phrases.) The rhymes are great and there's certainly a song-like rhythm. You don't need great story-telling skills for this one. It sounds great just being read aloud. Not one that a child or adult reading to the child will tire of easily I think. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Recipies for both the farmer and the farmers' market
This book is fantastic for anyone who either has a garden or shops at farmers markets.Unlike many cookbooks, organized by course or by dish, this book, is categorized by vegetable in the same style as the Victory Garden Cookbook.Although Too Many Tomatoes is clearly geared toward the gardener - with helpful information on the planting and harvesting of a wide range of vegetables - this book is a must for anyone interested in exploring the world of local food and farmers' markets. The simple, delicious recipes in this book are timeless and adaptable to any level of culinary skill.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Tomatoes, Squash, Beans, and Other Good Things:A Cookbook for When Your Garden Explodes
I had a chance to review this cookbook before I decided to order it so I knew it was something I could use for our abundance of produce in our garden.Although the condition was rated good, I found the book to be in excellent condition for a used cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic cookbook for those who appreciate small-scale, locally-grown produce
Too Many Tomatoes delivers on its promise: helping gardners turn their bounty at harvest-time into wonderful, fresh, healthy dishes. This cookbook was written before local and fresh were mere marketing slogans, and the authors love for food, for the earth, and for cooking make this cookbook both educational and inspiring.

In regards to reviewers who gave the cookbook low ratings for no pictures and recipes with dairy, those folks are missing the boat. There are plenty of us who appreciate the synergy between land and animal, who savor things like sauteed fresh carrots, local butter, and fragrant herbs.

If you're inspired by the likes of Kingsolver and Alice Waters, you'll treasure this cookbook as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Garden Cookbook
I have owned this book for about nine years now, and every summer when the garden really starts to produce it comes back off of the cookbook shelf. Some of my particular favorites are the Fresh Cream of Tomato Soup and the Eggplant Minestrone, which both freeze well if made in large quantites. The Chocolate Zucchini Cake is also very good.In fact there are a lot of good recipes for zucchini and who isn't looking for zucchini recipes when they grow them - one or two plants produce so much.My mother got used to this book when I still lived at home and helped my father grow a garden. Now she has to keep borrowing it to make her favorites.I have also shared some of my favorites with other family members and cowokers who have all been impressed with the variety and quality of the recipes.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

This book has soooo many yummy recipes.I no longer have an excess of zucchini I can use every one and no one gets tired of eating them every day all summer long!

5-0 out of 5 stars People were fighting over this!
Really a great book.I had it sitting on a coffee table and when I had a get together the ladies were vying for this one.I love the background sections as much as the recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent cookbook for vegetable gardeners
The first three recipes I selected were wonderful. They made use of our yellow summer squash and zucchini, as well as our bell peppers, tomatoes, jalapenos, and other summer garden produce.Even when I varied the recipes to suit my taste, they were still excellent.I then ordered it for my aunt who also has a big garden.

5-0 out of 5 stars All kinds of recipes for Squash
This cookbook is full of interesting and delicious recipes for Squash.I bought it for my daughter, who had seen it and cooked us several delicious dishes which were quite easy to prepare. There are other Squash recipes besides Zucchini. It includes cookies and breads.Ruth Joan Summey

4-0 out of 5 stars A delightful introduction to the game of squash
Hashim Khan was THE master of squash for many, many years. In its day, his book certainly deserved a 5 out 5.

As the other reviewer noted, it may be a bit dated now.But it is a delight to read... not in spite of, but because of, Khan's unique authorial voice. I recommend it to anything who would like a fun, short, readable, entertaining introduction to the game.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book but somewhat outdated
This is a book by one of the greatest players of squash. I think the most unique thing about this book is it's style. The book follows the way Hashim (the author) thinks. Since he did not receive formal education beyond elementary level therefore, the sentences are broken and not what you'd expect from an ordinary book. His sincerity toward the reader and the game of squash comes out very well in this book.Since Hashim wrote this book in the 60's, the content is somewhat outdated. Some of the squash shots that he shows (illustrated by photographs) are outdated and seldom used in todays sport. Overall, a good book that needs to be brought up to date. ... Read more
