Product Description
Both strength training and weight training are recognized by the American College of Sports Medicine as vital to a high quality of life. They are also of tremendous benefit to young, healthy adults and adults with or at risk for osteoporosis. Most information on nutrition and strength athletes, however, is scattered throughout pamphlet-type publications and magazines and tends to be written by individuals with little or no professional training in the field of nutrition. Nutrition and the Strength Athlete is an authoritative, scientifically based text that addresses virtually every aspect of nutrition as it pertains to the strength athlete. The book begins with an extensive review of the parameters defining resistance training. Subsequent chapters cover areas of interest to those who participate in resistance training, such as energy-yielding nutrients, vitamins and minerals, dietary supplements, hormones, hydration, and nutritional considerations to support the immune system . The book concludes with nutritional concerns for women who resistance train and strength athletes who play tennis. This definitive work discusses the following:oAn overview of studies done on weight trainingoAnabolic / androgenic steroid useoTraditional nutritional and energy requirements and the most recent findings on supplementation - including vitamin, amino acid, and phosphagen supplementsoVarious classes of strength-trained athletes and the regimens of strength trainingEach chapter is written by an experienced and highly regarded researcher and/or practitioner in the respective area. In fact, all of the authors participate in strength training as part of their lifestyle, making this book unique in its approach to Nutrition and the Strength Athlete. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Weight Training for All Young Athletes
I bought this book to help my oldest son with weight training when he was about 13 years old.I found it to be an excellent source of information on warmup, stretching and of course the resistance exercises for young people.I like the concise format. The focus of the book is for all young athletes to increase strength and condition themselves; it's not just a weightlifting book.Increasing strength and conditioning should help the youth be a better athlete, and hopefully help reduce injuries.Even so, it may be used as a weight training text for the one whose preferred sport is weight lifting. There are detailed descriptions and photographs of the stretches and exercises. Explanations are given for free weights and cable exercises where both apply. The photographs include both boys and girls performing exercises. Both sexes can benefit. Sample routines are provided, as well as explanations of how to plan a training program.Be sure to read the questions and answers section. It is very informative, also. The book cover indicates it is for parents and players, but it could even be useful for a coach. ... Read more

Product Description
Like the first edition, this second edition is intended to serve as a compendium of those aspects of Weightlifting and Weight-Training essential to the development of physical strength. A prominent feature of this book is the in-depth coverage of scientific and medical aspects of a forgotten sport. In this second edition, all efforts were made to revise the first edition and correct the typographical errors in spelling and grammar. The book Index and Glossary have been restructured more efficiently. In this edition, chapters six and seven, of the first edition, are consolidated into one chapter, with complete restructuring of the anatomical figures. The following two new chapters are added: Chapter seven –“Warm-up and Stretching” eases the difficulty of planning training without weight, prior to venturing into vigorous lifting. Chapter twenty one –“Performance Analysis”- immensely enhances the visual understanding of the dynamics of Weightlifting and the functional anatomy of the human body.It contains 395 impressive photographs of international Olympic weightlifters, beginning by Vasily Alxeev and Pyrros Dimas, and ending by Reza Zadeh. With colossal collections of annotated photographic art work, the second edition becomes a must have reference on weightlifting, athletic performance, human strife for glory, health, and graceful existence. The second edition adheres to the basic premise of the first edition of emphasizing axial training with vehement zeal. This is supported extensively by the hundreds of colorful photographs, drawings, and personal narrations. The very unique aspect of the second edition is the extensive elaboration on performance analysis of contemporary weightlifters by an engineer, physician, weightlifter, and math teacher. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The book is so-so
I think the book is okay; it's a little overpriced. Some of the information is outdated and contradictory to more recent studies. The book can also be a little dry at times, reading more like a technical manual.I feel some of the drawings and illustrations could be more clear. The author relies on poor drawings to illustrate lifting techniques.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very poorly written
This book reads like a terrible translation.Sometimes I was able to figure out what the author was trying to say, but there were several passages that were so poorly written I suspected that entire words were either missing or accidentally added. This is not an occasional problem - it is in every single paragraph and practically every sentence. The editors did the author a real disservice by not either requiring him or having someone else rewrite this book so that it was clear and easily read.Books on this subject are often hard to understand - it's a complex subject - but the problem with this book isn't the difficulty of the material. It's practically incomprehensible in places, and completely frustrating throughout, due solely to its abysmal writing. No offense to the author, as I suspect English is his second language and I believe he has some good information here. But unless this book is completely rewritten it is not worth your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Joy On Every Page
"Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training"-2nd Ed. is more than a very good book on what it's title suggests. As previous reviewers have covered the expansive index, I'll try to add some more insights. This book benefits tremendously from the author's 40 years of hands-on experience in Olympic Lifting combined with his education as an MD and an engineer, coupled with an unstoppable enthousiasm for spreading the word of lifting, exercising and healthy living.

Only one of many positive results is that inside the book is found the most complete technical Olympic Lifting manual I have ever read, wich on the one hand is lavishly illustrated and lively written in an attractive lay-out, and on the other hand explains the intricate mechanical why and how of the Olympic lifts through every inch from the approach to the bar until the finish in exquisite detail. A near magical mix of utterly completetechnical explanation of execution, assistance exercises and training planning, and inviting, low-threshhold writing.

These characteristics jump out in every chapter, on every page, in any subject covered. The clean & jerk and the snatch stand central stage but around them are added and rigorously coveredall the important ingedients for health, not only competition, or training with a barbell: cardio-vascular health, physiology down to cellular level, mental and social issues, flexibility, axial strength, adequate nutrition, maximizing training longevity, body-building and bodyweight exercises, facts & fallacies, all sub-divided again. This is a rare book where the title falls short on the contents. 576 pages (including index) of solid "uplifting" info. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars great effort
The accurate and high quality pictures are the strongest side of this book.
The writer is really intelligent and knows what he is talking about. You can disagree with some of his advice, but at least you understand where he is coming from.
Caution: at least half of the book is on health and exercise in general, but an olympic weightlifter will get his/her money's worth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid information
There have been some pretty in depth reviews that cover this book well, but I had a couple of points I wanted to make.

This book is a terrific resource for anyone wanting to take the step into weightlifting or strength training. The emphasis of this book upon strength and healthy living is somewhat at odds with most mainstream literature due to their basis in bodybuilding. As a result this book and the author should be commended for promoting a healthy approach to weight training as a lifestyle and practice. Finally someone who "gets it", lifting shouldn't be about looking healthy and strong, it should be about being healthy and strong.

The only flaw I see in this book is the author's english skills. His first language is clearly not english and as such he does have some confusing sentences and paragraphs. But I only noticed this for the first 1-2 chapters, either you get used to it or it the bulk of the book has been more tightly edited.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in strength training, especially those wishing to learn the snatch and clean and jerk. ... Read more

Active-Isolated Strength Training is a remarkably easy and effective way to tone up, lose weight, rehabilitate from an injury, reshape a sagging waistline, regain lost vitality, or build muscles. Using the Active-Isolated technique, introduced in The Whartons' Stretch Book ("Athletes rave about the program by this father-son team"--USA Today), you'll learn how to create a personal training program backed by sound scientific principles and specifically tailored to your specific fitness goals and favorite sports. You'll discover:

  • Step-by-step instructions and clear illustrations for thirty-five simple exercises
tailored to work specific muscle groups

  • The seven myths of strength training (forget going for the burn!)

  • How to make your own no-cost/low-cost home gym

  • Workout prescriptions for more than fifty sports and activities, from running,
swimming, and cycling to keyboarding and heavy lifting

  • And much, much more!
Amazon.com Review
Most weight-training programs are built around exercises thatwork as much muscle as possible, thus building the most strength inthe least amount of time. But the Whartons believe the exact oppositeapproach is the most beneficial. They believe you should work yourbody one small group of muscles at a time. In that sense,The Whartons' Strength Book takes the exact same tack as theirvery popular StretchBook.

Will the Strength Book become as much of afitness-bookshelf staple? Maybe, but the two books appeal todifferent ends of the fitness spectrum. Whereas the Whartons' ideasabout flexibility seem to be most useful and popular withhigh-performance athletes, their strength-training theories seem mostsuited to beginners and recreational athletes. Maybe they really dotrain this way themselves, and maybe they really use these methods onthe professional athletes who pay for their services, but one has todoubt that many serious gym-goers will want to do specializedexercises for tiny muscles in their wrists and ankles, and will wantto do a bunch of exercises for lower-body muscles that one move--thesquat--can work all at once.

That said, most people who exercisewill find something to like here. The beginning of the book ischock-full of useful tips for working out in your home withoutexpensive equipment (for example, they note that a gallon jug of milkweighs 8.78 pounds; with two of those, you've got a decent set ofdumbbells). Most people will be able to use at least a few of the 35exercises illustrated. And anyone who enjoys sports--watching orplaying--will be entertained by the Whartons' witty comments abouttraining for specific activities. They note, for example, that hockeyoriginated with bored shepherds strapping broken animal bones ontotheir feet. "Although the sport has evolved since those early days,"they write, "one thing remains constant: broken bones." --LouSchuler ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Active Isolated Stretching- Works
I love the Active Isolated Stretching method and would encourage everyone with a body to incorporate the system into your life.Aaron Mattes ( the founder) and the Whartons both do a great job sharing the method.I would suggest everyone learn the method on their own body and watch for results. Start today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Complete
This is the most comprehensive strength training program that I have ever engaged in.After a month of following this book, I was able to totally realign my body and overcome my injuries (hip). It is really a shame that this book is out of print...it is a gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why not get to know your own body?
I like this book because of the very reasons that some of the reviewers did not like it.This method of exercising specific muscles allowed me to increase strength in those specific areas where I was weakest. There may be exercises that use more muscles - like squats - but honestly, who can do them when you are trying to get back into shape?I say start with this book and learn to strengthen the supporing muscles before going big time with squats, running, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected
I purchased the book based on Dr Weil's endorsement. They may be good personal trainers but the book is impractical.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read, But ...
I bought this book hoping to expand on the strength training program I do at home.I'm a competitive track athlete and am dependent on strength exercises to prevent injury.

This book was a hoot to read.I read the whole thing, all of the exercises and all of the sports discussions at the back. The Whartons are fun and entertaining writers.

BUT.Truth be told, the only thing I changed about my exercise routine was that I now hold my leg extensions for 5 seconds instead of three. That's it.

The Whartons would have you believe that it takes only twenty minutes or so to do their list of exercises for each sport, but I didn't find this to be true.Exercising one little muscle at a time is time consuming and pain staking.I find myself doing the same old squats and push-ups that I've always done-- exercises that, frankly, give you the many muscle group workout that the Whartons discourage. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars "muscle comic" drivel
Save your money on this book, and just buy any issue of the rediculous muscle comic books on the shelf at any given time. Uses faulty logic, and complete disregard of human physiology, and kinesiology to justify the age-old 1 set to failure philosophy. A fair tactic if your goal is simply to avoid a strictly sedentary existence, but wont yeild much of any result beyond initial adaptation stages (about 3 months, or so). Once you get past the novice stage of adapting to nearly anything, this setup doesnt provide enough intensity for strength increase, or enough volume for much growth. Its a good way to get sore, and reinforce bad form, and "cheating" for an extra rep, but no so great for lasting progress. If you go this way expect a lot of DOMS, some strained joints, and early plateau.
Despite all this, which has been established both in studies, and anecdotally, the writer touts the advantages, and peddles this quick, and simple method as "the" way, scoffing at many respected, and accepted experts in the field, while offering no actual facts, whatsoever. Going on to explain that if it doesnt work for you, you must just not be working hard enough.
In short, you can get the entire contents of this book from a 10 minute conversation with a high-school kid in the weight room...Ummm, lift stuff 8 or 10 times, until you cant move it again, and stuff, then have someone else help you for a couple more, then go eat a ton.

1-0 out of 5 stars A practial approach to frustration
Brzycki doesn't know what he's talking about. This book is absolutely and utterly wrong.Case in point:Brzycki states that to gain strength one must work out with a weight for a specified amount of time and do so doing only one set.So according to Brzycki, to gain strength in a bench press one would bench press for forty to ninety seconds and follow up with a lower weight doing two to three reps. The purpose is to fully exhaust your chest and tricep muscles. This is wrong. If you read the sixth edition of SUPERTRAINING by Mel Siff and Yuri Verkhoshansky, you would learn that to properly make strength gains in a bench press, you must first warm up doing cardio for four to five minutes to elevate your internal body temperature.Afterward you would take two barbells twenty percent of your maximum bench press and lower them below chest level to stretch and thus align your chest and tricep muscle fibers and you would bench press them for four to five reps to loosen up your muscles. Now take eighty to ninety percent of your maximum bench press and bench press that two times for three sets but avoid doing each set for more than fifteen seconds. The reasoning is that when you do a couple of reps per set, you are exercising your fast twitch muscle fibers and not exercising your slow twitch muscle fibers. The reason that you don't want to activate your slow twitch muscle fibers is that they are responsible for endurance whereas fast twitch muscle fibers are used for explosive and fast movements and short bursts of strength. But please realize that the reason I say don't do a bench press for more than fifteen seconds is totally arbitrary and what works for me.Also realize that doing three sets of bench pressing is arbitrary as well. You might be different and need only eight seconds or one rep or two sets of one rep.Just remember you need only bench press enough to trigger an adaptive response in your fast twitch chest and tricep muscle fibers so after resting them for a couple days you can come back for you next workout and bench press a heavier weight.
So go out and get the sixth edition of SUPERTRAINING by Mel Siff and Yuri Verkhoshansky because it will give you the guidelines from which you can construct a successful strength gaining program and don't be discouraged by the reviews for it. They mostly say it references obscure Russian physiology texts, it's difficult to read, and it doesn't give you set in stone strength training programs. That's all true but once you actually incorporate the information in SUPERTRAINING into your workout and see that you are making strength gains that's the only reference you need.As far as it being difficult to read, so what.Reading SUPERTRAINING will change your body and your life and it's worth the effort of having to wallow through its esoteric physiology jargon and incomprehensible graphs.I also love the fact that it doesn't give you set in stone, "do three sets of ten" generic training programs because everybody's different and if you see you are making strength gains, you know you're doing it right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Book on Strength Training
Matt Brzycki presents a highly rational way to strength train. A lot of what he presents is contrary to the fad-o-the-day "boot camp" type of programs, where people believe they are working because they sweat a lot and may lose weight. However, rational exercise for the muscles is where it is at, and Brzycki HITs the nail on the head with this great book. This book gets 5/5 all the way.

Super book! Check it out and best of health to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Productive!
Regardless of what many will say about HIT (High Intensity Training), it is one of the simplest, most practical, and most productive training methods available. That said...this is an excellent title that provides a solid overview of HIT and strength training in general. If you want to learn about practical strength training that doesn't require you to invest hours and hours in the gym each week then get this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to learning about HIT
After reading this book, you will begin to really appreciate the authors decades long devotion to the concept and practice of High Intensity training. As a C.S.C.S. and a accomplished trainer myself, I have chosen to go down a different path than Matt when it comes to improving human performance. However I can honestly say that this book will enable any reader to fully understand and execute a practical plan for using the HIT philosophy.
Having worked with Matt in the past I can vouch for his expertise in HIT.Unlike some of the other reviewers, I do not wish for my philosophical differences with the author to cloud my judgement on the quality of his book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and poor illustrations
A poorly written book with a limited amount of pictures to correctly illustrate the proper way to use the kettle bell. There are many others books on the market which would better serve the purpose for learning how to do a great kettle bell workout. This book had too much repitition and was not well written. Don't waste your money

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Kettlebells
I'm a weightlifter looking to incorporate something different to change up the routine. This book is the perfect solution for someone looking to learn the proper techinques to get into kettlebell training. I also liked the fact there were different routines illustrated for whatever sport you are training for. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to take their strength training to the next level. Bellomo does a great job using his personal experience in Kettlebell training to set you in the right direction. Enjoyed it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best kettlebell book.
If you are looking for a great book showing you how to use kettlebells for a variety of different sports, this is it. This is the best book of its kind I have ever found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kettlebells made easy
The detailed exercise descriptions and specialized combinations of routines (circuits) take all the guesswork out of making kettlebells an effective part of your training routine. The workouts are designed to combine cardio and strength training into a single session and the order of the exercises in the various circuits maximize the workout to ensure you are getting the most out of the session.I like to create a month of workouts from the book and copy the circuits from the book onto a notepad I can take to the gym, working well.Great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A biased review
As my title indicates, I may be a bit biased in my review of this book. Here is the reason: I personally had a chance to train with Dave. Try as I may, it is difficult to separate this fact from my review of this book. In December of 2004, I had ACL replacement surgery. I credit Dave with helping me recover as quickly and to the extent that I did. Within 4 months I was ready for golf. Okay, laugh if you will, but golf requires a range of motion, balance and a strength to be able to rotate through the golf swing. Believe me, this was not a simple task on a gimpy knee. Dave helped me gain the strength and stamina I needed to be able to get back the necessary muscle for my golf swing. And he did this in the time frame that I wanted to. And as for skiing, another passion of mine, I was back to skiing the next season. And, with more endurance and strength than before my surgery! Kettlebells, once I was recovered from the impact of the surgery, became a regular part of my routine with Dave. He was constantly mixing it up on me, but I always looked forward to the training with kettlebells. The range of motion, the strength necessary, and the cardio impact from a session of kettlebells is an all-around workout. Most of you will not be able to train personally with Dave. But this book is the next best thing. The many photos and the descriptive narrative is the alternative to being able to work out out with Dave. As I read the varieties of workouts in the book, they reminded me of the personal sessions that I had with him. So if you can't work out with him personally, get this book, get some kettlebells and start the routines. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

This is one of those books that I consider great and helpful however those who are not of too analytical nature and those ofmore coleric nature will be kind of bored I'm afraid. In any case one of needed and good resources in your fitness and muscle gain library

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference for those who care about fitness
The muscles fascinate me. And when I plan my workouts, I like to plan them according to the needs of my muscles. For example, if my back is bothering me, I try and plan exercises that will soothe and strengthen my back muscles and not further injure them.

If I want more strength in my upper body, I want to train the muscles that will help me accomplish this in the fastest, most efficient manner. That's why I find this book so helpful.

The book shows you all of the muscles that a person uses in most all compound and isolated weight bearing exercises. Also you'll find the muscles used in yoga and stretching, fitness in general. So it's a book for everyone.

Exercising without knowing what you're doing, what muscles you're working, is not a good idea. It's more fun and more productive when you understand what muscles you're working and exactly how to work them to get the most benefit. That's why you need this book.

There are other books on muscular anatomy. But I find this one to be the best.

You'll discover how often and for how long you'll need to workout to accomplish your own unique goals. You'll also learn how to deal with injuries. I was a bit surprised, however, that the book failed to give modifications for many of the exercises. Unfortunately, most books of this type have the same failing. I guess it's expected the reader will know the modifications. Fortunately, I do. I hope you do to. If not, you need to invest in a book that shows the different modifications for those with injuries or limitations.

I suggest you read at least the first part of the book. Then you can skim the rest if you like. But carefully read the information about the muscles and exercises you're going to do. It's not a book you'll necessarily want to read cover to cover. And, you won't necessarily need to.

But you will want to refer to it often. So always keep it handy. Keep in in your gym bag or your workout room and use it when planning your workouts for the week.

The exercises in the book are mostly using your own body weight or simple free weights. Only a few use machines. So you can select the ones you want and for which you're equipped.

This is an excellent reference and I highly recommend it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to basics for strength development
As a former competitive powerlifter returning to lifting and helping new athletes, I asked powerlifting stalwart Dave Jeffrey what to read for updates on the latest in the science of strength and conditioning. He recommended this book, and his recommendation was well founded. If you want routines and advanced techniques for heaving lifting and strength development this is not your book. But if you want a refresher (or a first course) on how strength and conditioning all fits together, including the basics of why muscles get stronger (or don't), this book is your ticket. Young (and also more mature) lifters will find the basics that an althlete really needs to know for overall strength development. As for the really heaving lifting, there are some great books out there but there is no substitute for going to a gym where experienced lifters are pushing up eye-popping amounts of weight, and having those individuals explain and demonstrate first hand their techniques. No book can catch the minor lifting imperfections that can lead to serious injury when the lifter (young or old) decides to make the transition from casual to serious amounts of weight on the bar. But for the basics of how strength and conditioning works, this is the essential textbook. ... Read more

Product Description
"This work is significant. It is the first to include a method of assessing structural strength in the context of the modern marine environment."--Commander M. C. Cruder, U.S. Coast Guard

Acclaimed author and naval architect Dave Gerr created this unique system of easy-to-use scantling rules and rules-of-thumb for calculating the necessary dimensions, or scantlings, of hulls, decks, and other boat parts, whether built of fiberglass, wood, wood-epoxy composite, steel, or aluminum. In addition to the rules themselves, The Elements of Boat Strength offers their context: an in-depth, plain-English discussion of boatbuilding materials, methods, and practices that will guide you through all aspects of boat construction.

Now you can avoid wading through dense technical engineering manuals or tackling advanced mathematics. The Elements of Boat Strength has all the formulas, tables, illustrations, and charts you need to judge how heavy each piece of your boat should be in order to last and be safe. With this book, an inexpensive scientific calculator, and a pad of paper, you'll be able to design and specify all the components necessary to build a sound, long-lasting, rugged vessel.

What reviewers have said about Dave Gerr's books:

Propeller Handbook

"By far the best book available on the subject."--Sailing

"The best layman's guide we've ever read."--Practical Sailor

Dave Gerr and International Marine made a complicated topic understandable and put it into a handbook that is easy to use."--WoodenBoat

"Without doubt the definitive reference for selecting, installing, and understanding boat propellers."--Royal Navy Sailing Association Journal

An excellent book of reference that is almost impossible to find insingle or multiple publications. From an author who has the hands on as well as the academic qualifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dave will make smart designers of us all!
If yer gonna go designing boats, his book, The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers, and Owners, should be on your shelf. And if what you design is going to be pushed by a propeller, you'll want his Propeller Handbook, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers the goods
As a degreed aerospace engineer, I've used the formula's in this book to easily calculate the scantlings for aluminum hulls from 14' to 30' in length, without exhaustive structural calculations or the need for finite element analysis software. Properly applied, you can build your boat with confidence that it will perform safely in the operating limits described. Are there other ways to calculate scantlings? Absolutely! But if you want "rule of thumb" formulas that are reliable when confined within the operating envelope, this is the way to go. I've plugged the equations and operating parameters into an excel spreadsheet that gives me all the scantling dimensions needed when entering the length, width and depth of the hull. Previous reviewers who stated the subject matter is "wide but shallow" didn't understand what they were reading. If you want to design a boat from scratch and will read and digest the material, this book is a bargain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read every word!
Great book! This book was just what I needed, while making boat repairs and contemplating my next purchase (or perhaps build).

With an undergraduate degree in Ocean Engineering with a couple of naval architecture courses under my belt, I really needed a professional's common sense, savvy discussion of boat design. With each page read I visualized the different construction details seen at boat shows and on friend's boats, I can trace failures observed back to the discussions.

The author's writing style really livens up the reading! I have read many books on the subject, this and "The Nature of Boats" are my favorites to date.

My only criticism is that the scantlings were noted to be appropriate for speeds up to 45 knots, I would have liked to book to include higher speed designs as that is my current interest, still looking.... Otherwise, five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Already applied it
As an amateur boat builder, it helped me a lot to understand the subject. After finishing this book, now it is much easier for me to understand the class rules. It already paid back, since it made me realize a mistake on the number and thickness of the scantlings on my friend's boat. ... Read more

Product Description
This new second edition of Science and Practice of Strength Training comes with many additions and changes. A new coauthor, Dr. William Kraemer, joins Dr. Vladimir Zatsiorsky in expanding on the principles and concepts needed for training athletes. Among Dr. Kraemer’s contributions are three new chapters targeting specific populations—women, young athletes, and seniors—plus the integration of new concepts into the other chapters.

Together the authors have trained more than 1,000 elite athletes, including Olympic, world, continental, and national champions and record holders. The concepts they divulge are influenced by both Eastern European and North American perspectives. The authors integrate those concepts in solid principles, practical insights, coaching experiences, and directions based on scientific findings. This edition is much more practical than its predecessor; to this end, the book provides the practitioner with the understanding to craft strength training programs based on individuals’ needs.

Science and Practice of Strength Training, Second Edition, shows that there is no one program that works for any one person at all times or for all conditions. This book addresses the complexity of strength training programs while providing straightforward approaches to take under specific circumstances. Those approaches are applied to new physiological concepts and training practices, which provide readers with the most current information in the science and practice of strength training. The approaches are also applied to the three new chapters, which will help readers design safe and effective strength training programs for women, young athletes, and seniors. In addition, the authors provide examples of strength training programs to demonstrate the principles and concepts they explain in the book.

The book is divided into three parts. Part I focuses on the basis of strength training, detailing concepts, task-specific strength, and athlete-specific strength. Part II covers methods of strength conditioning, delving into training intensity, timing, strength exercises, injury prevention, and goals. Part III explores training for specific populations. The book also includes suggested readings that can further aid readers in developing strength training programs.

This expanded and updated coverage of strength training concepts will ground readers in the understanding they need in order to develop appropriate strength training programs for each person that they work with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
This is one of the best books on strength training I have ever read! But this book is a dry read and is not for everyone. The information in this book is great and very scientific. You will learn a lot in this book but you must be willing to think outside the box to put the information to use. This is not a book that you can read and pick out a workout routine, but this book will help give you the tools to build a great workout routine if you take the time and effort to apply the principles from the book. If you love fitness and buy Men's health/fitness then this book is NOT FOR YOU. If you know who Mel Siff is and you like his book then this will be of interest to you. This is a text book, and in my opinion a great one. I am very glad I bought this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Written for coaches and physiologists
I have mixed feelings about this book. First, the good stuff: it contains a good review of current scientific literature relating to muscle development. It contains (I assume) good instructions to persons who are seriously training for regional or international competitions in weight lifting, gymnastics, track and field events, swimming, baseball, and others. The text is not centered on any one sport; this is a good thing, since strength training is relavant to any sport. The book also has chapters dedicated to special interest groups including pre-adolecents, seniors, women (with discssion of menstrual cycle), and persons recovering from injury. I learned a lot from this book and will use some of its material in a college course that I teach.

Things I'm less impressed with include the first few chapters in the section entitled "Basis of Strength Conditioning." The reader is bombarded with technical language and equations without sufficient explanations. The text is not dry; it provides great examples and contexts for the scientific concepts introduced in this section, but I found myslef a bit lost. This led to some misunderstandings later in the book when the same concepts were mentioned with regards to specific situations. I have a Ph.D. in Biology, so it's not a good sign that I got lost in places. Part of the probelm may be the unneccessary use of abbreviations that reqired me to use the glossary a little too often (I'm glad it has a glossary). Other than the introductory sections, I think the whole book could be written more succinctly. The text became repetitive in places.

I recommend this book to those with specialized interests: coaches, exercise technicians, elite athletes, and college professors like myself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good book
This book was a slight disappointment, wasn't as good as I expected. Contains good info anyway, and I found some interesting new pieces of info, but also some errors. Due to some errors I can't totally trust everything in this book, have to verify some things from other sources before I could trust them completely.

As an example, in "Injury prevention" section authors recommend including "trunk rotations against resistance" in training protocols (page 147). This is totally against scientific proof, according to scientific evidence this exercise should absolutely be EXCLUDED. Check this in Stuart McGill's book "Low back disorders- ..." and you will find the right kind of advice on injury prevention.

Same goes for the recommendation on page 145: "Persons at high risk of LBPS (low back pain syndrome) should perform sit-ups with the legs bent, as in this position the load on the spine is lighter and the effect on the abdominal wall is greater." This is old and erroneous information, the new scientific evidence proves that there is not a great difference in the load on the spine even if legs are bent. The pressure is again high and exactly from the injury prevention viewpoint there are superior rectus abdominis exercises. Once again, check for example above mentioned McGill's book for the scientific evidence and better recommendations.

For the above stated reasons, I can't totally trust this books information, especially the injury prevention section is clearly not updated to take into account the newer scientific evidence.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but lacking in electrostimulation science.
The book is excellent. However, the few pages mentioning (EMS) are dated and reveal ignorance of the progress made in this field since the mid '90s. It only mentions Russian electrostimulation, an inferior technique of the past; it is surpassed by current know-how and machines utilizing square-wave technology, such as the Globus Premium Sport Muscle Electrostimulator. The author can be forgiven for not knowing this technique, but discussing it fromthe authoritative pedestal that these two authors have, is misleading. It also doesn't understand how EMS can complement traditional training. See Wikipedia for a better explanation of EMS.

4-0 out of 5 stars SCIENCE AND PRACTICE OF STRENGTH TRAINING
