Product Description

Kettlebells--those amazingly effective weights that look like bowling balls with handles--have become all the rage in high-end health clubs and boxing gyms everywhere. And this is the first mainstream how-to guide to guide on the subject.

How can you get a complete training program that works the heart, builds muscle mass, increases endurance, and improves flexibility--without having to spend hours in the gym?The answer: kettlebells. That's the equipment elite Soviet athletes depended on to build their super-strength and win gold medals, and it's still the best way to get the body you've dreamed of. With the help of 150 color photos to illustrate every move, two certified trainers from New York's elite Equinox Club explain all the ins-and-outs (including safety) of this tough but accessible full-body workout. In addition to clearly explained exercises and routines, Victoria D. Gray and Smith Vatel provide tips on where to buy weights (and how to create your own), show how to set up a home workout space, and, most importantly, explain how to avoid injuries and accidents.

5-0 out of 5 stars kettlebell training book
well written, easy to follow - A1 knowledge on kettlebells and how to use them...
i highly recommend this book!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst than nothing
Please -- if you're curious about kettlebell training, get almost any other book. All this book has for you is bodybuilding exercises substituting kettlebells for dumbbells. These authors have no kettlebell certifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to the point reference
I really like this book because it is a mere 128 pages or so and it is very to the point in style. The exercise explanations and photos are clear and concise. There is very little wasted text in this book and it reads very quickly so you can spend more time exercising! Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kettlebell
I love my new kettlebell, but it took over a month to get it.Muscledriver didn't send it out.My credit card was billed, but the information to send it didn't get to their shipping department.I finally called and after a half hour wait they figured it out. When I ordered their computer was down causing the problem. The employee on the phone was nice, but didn't offer a discount on the kettlebell or future purchases.I might order from Muscledriver again because I love the product, but I'd remind them of losing my first order.

3-0 out of 5 stars A brief comment
First I should say I'm a novice kettlebell user and just bought this book to get an introduction to the subject and get going with a few basic exercises. The cheap price was a consideration in my purchase, and since you usually get what you pay for these days, I wasn't expecting the bible here. I noticed from reading the reviews that there's all this concern about beginners trying to get started with this book since it doesn't discuss some of the things a novice should know, but come on, I have some common sense, and I know not to swing a 30-kg kettlebell between my legs, over my head, or try to balance one with one hand while doing a one-handed hand stand, or something else wacky like that, until I'm more skilled and know what I'm doing. So far all I'm doing is a few basic exercises and one or two of the momentum ones to supplement my workouts with standard weights and dumbbells. The book was sufficient for that. I've noticed how the off-center weight distribution of kettlebells makes them awkward and puts stress on muscles and joints in a way that other weights don't, but I'm starting out with lower weights until I'm more skilled. I'm a long time martial artist and instructor who basically wanted to see what all the hoopla was about and satisfy his curiosity. If I find kettlebells truly advantageous I'll add them to my repertory but for now this was a cheap way to segue into a new method and get boot-strapped. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
I purchased this book for my sister for Christmas & asked her to review it. Here is what she said...
This is a great book. The information is great and will be a great reference for years to come.It helped put things together scientifically that I was wondering about in the gym.It has helped me train better. The only thing I have found that is a minor issue is that some of the references do not match up.An example would be on page 32 table 3.3b references for what page to find the exercises on do not all match up.Sumo deadlift is not on page 178 but on page 180.The information in this book makes it easy to overlook the printing errors and is a valuable tool for the everyday woman who is looking to make the most out of her time in the gym.

5-0 out of 5 stars For beginners to bodybuilders, and yes, it's free online
The 13 chapters in "Strength Training for Women" include:

-Becoming Fashionably Strong
-Building a Better Body
-Muscling Up Your Metabolism
-Training for Specific Results
-Gaining Superwoman Strength
-Fueling Your Strength
-Designing Your Program
-Strengthening Your Core
-Pressing and Pulling for Power
-Arming Your Bicep and Triceps
-Developing Lean, Athletic Legs
-Deadlifting for Whole-body Strength
-Quenching Your Competitive Fire

This is a comprehensive fitness book about strength training for women, written by a woman. Not a book written for men, which women can use.I like that about it.I also like that the models used to illustrate the exercises are 'real people'. You would not see them in Muscle and Fitness magazine, but you will see them in the gym at the YMCA!

While the last chapter is really geared for body building and fitness competitors, the book as a whole is very informative. Each chapter breaks down the information into easily readable bits and it's easy to skip around to find what you need or want to read.

The first chapter, gives you the 'why' to strength train. "The Perks" some might say.In the second chapter focus' on our body's 'adaptations' as strength training is added to our fitness routines. What our body goes through as it changes. The third chapter's focus is on our metabolism and how it works. The fourth chapter talks about the components of exercise: agility, flexibility, balance, endurance and strength, and how those components can be adjusted for different types of training.

Chapter five focus' on strength training methods.Isotonic versus isometric exercises, and speed versus strength training, to name a few.Chapter six is a good basic nutrition and meal planning for making training gains. Losing weight, gaining weight, are both covered.Chapter seven is where the meat of the book begins regarding exercises.Planning a workout for beginners through advanced, as well as a 'bone building' program are found here. Information on how to keep a training log as well as how to select your exercises and the importance of rest are covered in this chapter.

In the eighth chapter through the thirteenth, the book covers the 102 specific exercises broken down into the areas of the body they are geared to work on.Photos (some look a bit dated, but 'you get the picture...') illustrate what is described in step-by-step instructions.Nothing complicated and some use the ball or no weights at all.Others are done with free weights, bars or machines.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this book. It's comprehensive and well laid out with good information.I also love that it's free online at Healthline. If you're looking for one women's strength training book to use to improve your fitness at any age... this is it.

2-0 out of 5 stars inspiring models, please?
the thing that i most disliked about the book is the pictures. the models are not pretty, not inspiring, look like they have a body fat percentage over 25, etc. if you like to see exercises demonstrated by people who are actually in shape, you probably will not like this book.
on the other hand, there is some fairly in-depth discussion in here, and almost all the exercises can easily be done at home. they are nothing new, but if you are a beginner who wants to learn but does not want to join a gym, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great information
As I progressed in working out with weights, I wanted to get more information on training & more advanced moves, which this book provided.Note some information is geared towards the more advanced bodybuilder competition type.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
If you are at the gym , and you are working out , you are tapping into your physical energy . The last thing you want to do is read words and words . You need more pictures on how . This book has just too much of words ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A general weightlifting text
This book is nothing special in my opinion.I bought it expecting a discussion of how weight training can benefit gymnastics training.Unfortunately all I got was a general discussion of how to lift weights. There was little on programming, a decent discussion on periodization, and a good discussion of general lifting exercises...but why do you need general lifting exercises? There's nothing special here.It gives a decent, but not great, overview of how to lift for general conditioning and strength training.Basic questions such as:
How to incorporate weight training with gymnastic training
What lifts will help you power through sticking points in which gymnastic techniques
No discussion of appropriate volume.

One of the biggest problems this book has is it recommends a complete weightlifting regimen. You don't need that if you're training for gymnastics already. You get a lot of strength and explosive work through normal training.Adding a compelte lifting routine on top of that is a sure route to over-training.

I give this three stars because it is a good introductory weight lifting text.It just has nothing special for gymnasts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best guide to training
It's the best way to training gymnastics and gaing muscle and condition. ... Read more

It will help you incorporate the latest in strength training and sports nutrition into your daily training, and help you increase your strength, endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and decrease your recovery time between workouts. Author Bio:

Common injuries for female athletes depend on the sport, but may include: neck, upper back, or low back pain, sprains of the ligaments in the arms and legs, muscles strains, carpal tunnel syndrome, hip and knee pain, shin splints, and sprained ankles due to poor neuromuscular coordination. This book is designed to help condition your body to prevent these injuries. It also includes nutritional tips for P.M.S.

Since (Power = Force X Velocity), this book describes exercises using free weights, machines, and a swiss ball to strengthen and tone specific muscles. I also have a chapter with a Thigh, Butt, and Calf Workout using your own body weight, and with weights.

The limiting factors for performance are trunk (core) strength, muscular endurance, cardio-respiratory fitness, nutritional support, hydration, weight control, and rest and recovery. Being strong, flexible, and nutritionally fit will help you avoid injuries, maintain a healthy weight, and make any sporting activity more enjoyable.

Werner Kieser is a most successfull trainer for physical exercise concentrating on improving muscular strength to reduce or even eliminate back pain. As far as I know he is running more than 250 training centers in Central Europe with extreme success. Unfortunately there is no center existing in North America. His book illustrates the principle behind training as well as the exercises. I have particpated in the described training for the last three years and I became pain free after only six weeks of training. The reason I bought this book is that I have a relative in Canada who suffers from back pain. I read the book, found it easy to understand, very informative and perhaps the principles are applyable outside the specialized Kieser Traing Centers. ... Read more

Originally published in 1910, Alfred Rochefort's Healthful Sports for Boys: The American Boy's Ultimate Guide to Building Confidence, Strength and Good Moral Character Through Sports, Games, Camping, Boating, Swimming, Cycling, Skating, Sledding, Sleight of Hand Magic and More! is an optimistic "Can Do!" prescription for the kind of vigorous, competitive, yet thoroughly wholesome boyhood that for more than two centuries has reliably bred great American men of character, courage and good common sense. In our 21st Century, "post-modern" era of video games, virtual reality and "couch potato kids," Rochefort's vision of active boys creating fun with their own minds and muscles is a reminder of everything great about boys and about America, and a Clarion Call to a new generation to "get up and get great!" -- Before it's too late! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Find -- Great Sports Info for Boys, a Great Nostalgia Piece for Grownups
"Healthful Sports for Boys" is definitely in the same "ballpark" (ha ha, pun intended) as the better know Iggulden brothers' "The Dangerous Book for Boys," and should appeal to anyone who collects (or just loves) old boys books full of cool activities, useful information and good, old fashioned nostalgia for the boyhood of a bygone era. "Healthful Sports for Boys" was first published in 1910, and focuses, not surprisingly, on sports, which to my mind makes it more useful and interesting than "The Dangerous Book," which contains a lot of filler material about the history of ancient battles and such. There are clear instructions here for playing baseball and football, as well as "forgotten" team sports like "cat" and "townball." There are rules for a variety of games involving marbles, tops, etc., and directions for making and flying several styles of kites. In the arena of outdoor sports, camping, fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, bicycling, golf, and winter sports like ice skating and sledding are all explored. There are even a bunch of easy sleight of hand magic tricks. Buried in the straightforward discussion of various sports, the author inserts moral guidance as well, with admonitions to stand up for smaller kids and to put bullies in their place, to play fair, tell the truth, etc. In the last couple of years I have put together a pretty good collection of old Boy Scout manuals and other books published for boys in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, and this reprint edition of "Healthful Sports for Boys" fits right in, as one of the best. I highly recommend it. Another great boy's book I discovered from this same publisher (Better Days Books) is YOU CAN BE A GREAT AMERICAN!: 39 Steps to True and Lasting Greatness: A Growing Up Great Guide for American Boys And for the Parents and Teachers Who Love Them. Check that one out, too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on bowling

It would be great to update this book....are you still here Roland. ... Read more
