5-0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet and before it's time!
This is a classic little manual of a training method referred to as Manual Resistance. MR exercises can be used in group settings or when no other equipment is available. The only catch is that it requires a partner to apply the resistance. This is perfect for PE classes or group resistance classes when a change of pace is needed. This form of training is not very well known outside of HIT (High Intensity Training) circles or serious strength training buffs. However, more information can be found in a few other books such as "A Practical Approach To Strength Training", "High Intensity Training", and "New Workout: Human Resistance Training". While it's not a method that can be used alone, it's definitely a valuable training tool when a change of pace is needed or when no equipment is available but when a partner is. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in gaining some insight into this unique form of training.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected.
The book is all partner based exercises and no reference to exercises that one could do by oneself. It is also a little too simplistic and corny. It is probably worth the price as long as it is a low price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW
THIS BOOK IS A BIBLE!!!!!!!!!! perfectly descriptive, an excellent plan, helpful pictures and captions, miscellaneous information, and SO MUCH more!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars For All Athletes
Although this book is geared specifically for fencers (and brother, could fencers ever use guidance in this area!), it is useful for all athletes. The author has been involved in fencing as a competitor and coach for +30 years, and has researched his topic thoroughly. Strength is a crucial component to athletic performance, and should be maximized by any competitor to maximize his/her abilities. But strength is so much more than just big muscles--and that's where this book becomes essential. Author Harry James explains the complex components of usable, athletic strength clearly and concisely. Then he tells you how to increase your strength and apply it to your athletic performance. The main part of the book explains the author's program for strength training--which features detailed explanations and photographic demonstrations of the exercises. James divides the program into four phases--separate, integrate, accelerate, incorporate. This phasing of strength building progresses from basic strength exercises (separate) to creating chains of usable physical power (integrate) to uniting power with speed (accelerate) to making your newly acquired strength impact your game (incorporate). The intelligent and nuanced approach is miles ahead of any other book on strength training I have ever encountered. Imagine embarking on a strength training program like this for a year and then surprising your opponents with your new level of performance! Incorporating strength training into your sports regimen can help you catapult ahead of fellow athletes you have always lagged behind before. Every serious fencer and fencing coach should own this book, study it, and incorporate its tenets. All athletes of any sport should do so as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength Training for Fencers
Very useful and well organized book. Many of the workouts have application in other sports. I am an avid cross country skier and the power, balance in motion and core related workouts are great for XC training also. Highly recommend this book.

Product Description

With women's sport performance at an all-time high and continuing to rise, you need to be faster, stronger, and more agile in order to compete. Yet, until now, no training manual has specifically addressed female athletes' physiological, biomechanical, and anatomical needs.

Athletic Strength for Women presents effective exercise prescriptions to help you build a strength base and then convert that strength to speed and power in competition. The result is not only better performance but also fewer injuries. For example, exercises and programs for the lower body will improve hamstring and quadriceps strength ratios, providing enhanced takeoff power and landing strength and better protection for the knee. More than 120 targeted exercises and drills are provided to improve

-throwing, striking, swinging, and other upper-body skills;

-starting, stopping, jumping, cutting, turning, pivoting, and other lower-body maneuvers; and

-overall power and speed.
Written by David Oliver, former strength and conditioning coach for the U.S. women's soccer and basketball teams, and Dana Healy, department head for strength and conditioning at the United States Olympic Committee, Athletic Strength for Women contains general fitness and sport-specific performance tests. These tests are accompanied by normative tables that enable athletes to gauge strengths and weaknesses against those of their peers and set improvement goals.

The book also includes in-season, off-season, and preseason programs for all the major participation sports, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, swimming, and track and field. No matter what your sport, prepare your body to perform at full potential. The programs in Athletic Strength for Women will help you achieve a new level of athleticism.

From the supplier: Five common field tests of upper body muscular strength or endurance in children 9-10 years old were analyzed for their concurrent and construct validity. The tests consisted of the pull-up and flexed arm hang tests, push-up tests, the Vermont modified pull-up and the New York modified pull-up. The results showed that the five field tests were not valid as measures of absolute muscle strength and endurance. However, they did show concurrent and construct validity as measures of weight-relative muscular strength.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best for its illustrations and sensible introductions
The illustations and directions for doing individual exercises across a variety of different kinds of equipment are excellent, as is the discussion of the pros and cons of the alternatives. However information targeted for the development of strength training programs is elementary and not enough is provided for you to make intelligent variations on the sample programs. So, for example, what is the objective of a strength training program:Should you try to include exercise which tap all the muscles illustrated (in their excellent diagram)? If the goal is to simply include those used in daily living, what are they exactly? Is anything gained by exercising a given muscle in multiple exercises? What is the philosphy behind the selection of exercises in the sample programs? What accounts for the differences between workouts organized by equipment type (eg free weights vs machines) and those organized by program style (eg single vs multiple sets)? In addition, and frustrating for a training novice, there are a number of cross-referencing failures and inconsistencies in vocabulary:for example, are leg and hip adduction and abduction the same thing? How do 'hamstrings' map to the muscles named in the anatomical illustration? It would also have been useful to have a table relating the exercises to the muscles exercised to help the reader think more clearly about how to put an exercise program together.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide to Strength Training
This guide will help you design your own program to fit your needs and wants.Well illustrated with photos, it's also clearly written. The book gives descriptions of free-weight work-outs along with multi-station and Nautilus-type machines, and even has a section on working with a partner. Complete and easy to read, it's perfect for me, a person who likes to work out but isn't an athlete.A chart of major muscle groups and corresponding exercises also helps define what's going on in your body.My only complaint:the human body illustration used to identify muscles is clearly a *guy*, which, though it doesn't take away from the book's effectiveness, seems a bit silly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
I'm reading this book to get certified, but so far I'm impressed with the content and layout. It has a lot of useful research-backed information, and it starts with the scientific fundamentals and background before going into exercise technique and programming. I really feel like I'm gaining some valuable knowledge.

From the supplier: Resistance training has long been incorporated in adult fitness programs. Previous studies pointed out the importance of proper training intensity for optimal strength and muscle mass gains for people who train with weights. However, many of these studies have college-aged men for their subjects. Moreover, back strength has been neglected by these studies. Muscular endurance, particularly in the midback, of women with ages ranging from 20-70 years old are investigated.
