Product Description

Celebrates a centenary of surf lifesaving in NSW. From the establishment of its first clubs to its growth into one of Australia’s most important volunteer movements, the book describes the developments that took place at both a practical and administrative level, the heroic rescues that were undertaken, including the Black Sunday rescue in 1938 and, more recently, the rescue of over 200 people in the Bondi to Bronte Ocean Swim in 2003, and the ongoing success of the Nippers movement.

Excerpt: Plas y Brenin, is currently the The National Mountain Centre for Wales (UK). The Centre is situated in Dyffryn Mymbyr, the Mymbyr Valley, in Snowdonia and is less than a quarter of a mile south-west of the centre of Capel Curig on the A4086 road. In the late 18th century, Richard Pennant, 1st Baron Penrhyn, built a road from Bangor through the Nant Ffrancon and Dyffryn Ogwen to Betws-y-Coed, and eventually through to Shrewsbury (in use by 1798). In 1801, Lord Penrhyn built the then named Capel Curig Inn. In 1808 the Mail coach which ran from Holyhead to Shrewsbury began running via Capel Curig. The Mail coach ceased operation in 1848 following the opening of the Chester and Holyhead Railway. The inn wasn't built on the road (now the A5), but some distance from it on the present site to facilitate enjoyment of the superb view of Llynnau Mymbyr (the lakes) and the Snowdon horseshoe. Sometime between 1869 and 1871 the building's name was changed yet again from the Capel Curig Hotel to the Royal Hotel. Since its opening in 1801 the famous guests over the years were Queen Victoria, and Kings Edward VII, George V, and Edward VIII. Other well-known people who visited included Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond on September 6 1807 (there is still a plaque commemorating his visit, which is still there to this day), Sir Joseph Paxton (1856) (designer of The Crystal Palace), Bishop Samuel Wilberforce (1858), Lord Byron (1913) and Sir Walter Scott (1818). Some distinguished visitors to the hotel etched their names into the windows...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=712657 ... Read more

Chapters: Surf Life Saving New Zealand Clubs, Royal New Zealand Coastguard, United North Piha Lifeguard Service, Piha Surf Life Saving Club, Surf Life Saving Northern Region, St Clair Surf Life Saving Club, Orewa Surf Life Saving Club. Excerpt: The Royal New Zealand Coastguard is the civilian volunteer coast guard of New Zealand, the primary search and rescue organisation for the nation's coastal waterways and major lakes. The New Zealand Police coordinate smaller search and rescue incidents (Class II) in New Zealand, with assistance and resources from the coastguard as required; major maritime incidents (Class III) are coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ), who may call on the resources of the New Zealand Defence Force. Government agencies including the New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Customs Service manage maritime law enforcement and border control, with the Coastguard not having a role, unlike in a number of other countries. Sea rescue services have existed in New Zealand since at least 1861, but it was not until 1976 that various local groups formed the national New Zealand Coastguard Federation. It was granted Royal Patronage in 1990, and dropped "Federation" from the title in 2005. The coastguard is a charitable organisation, relying on membership fees, fundraising, donations, and New Zealand Lottery Grants Board grants, to cover expenses of $8.5 million a year. The service announced a per hour charge out rate to non-members in 2006, and made calls for government funding in 2007. The Auckland Regional Amenities Funding Act 2008 passed into law in August 2008, requiring Auckland councils to provide funding for amenities in the city, including the Coast Guard Northern Region. As of 2010 the annual membership f... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19587669 ... Read more

Excerpt: Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is the organisation that oversees surf lifesaving in New Zealand. Their strapline is 'In it for life', emphasising the long relationship many members have with the organisation, and also alluding to the fact that the organisation is committed to preserving life by preventing drowning. The purpose of SLSNZ is to protect people from drowning and injury in New Zealand. Surf Life Saving clubs patrol designated beaches. Patrolled areas are identified by yellow and red flags, between which beach users are advised to swim. Patrolling lifeguards dress in yellow and red clothing including a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, shorts and a pair of their own togs. The SLSNZ lifeguard uniform is sponsored by DHL, and carries their branding across the front. In the early years of the 20th century, the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association (NZASA) controlled the brief amounts of life saving activity by providing resuscitaiton methods and demonstrations at swimming club carnivals. The next step occurred when the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) was formed and enforced with a conference off all head centres in 1912 called by Canterbury. The RLSS was established in Christchurch and remains there to this day. The first surf clubs began in the years 1909-1910 leading of with: Castlecliff (Dunedin), Lyall Bay (Wellington) and New Brighton (Christchurch). Within the next few years other clubs started forming around five regions: Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Gisborne/Napier/New Plymouth and Wanganui. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3114940 ...
