The Peterson Field Guide Series (R) Sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation, the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, and the National Audubon Society

America's Best-Selling Field Guides

THE PETERSON IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM Roger Tory Peterson's unique identification system explains exactly what features to look for to tell one species from another.

EASE OF USE Peterson Field Guides are designed to work in the field, and every illustration, every word, is directed to that end.

THE AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS In each Peterson Field Guide, an author with expertise in the subject and an experienced artist work closely with the editors to ensure that both text and illustrations are accurate.

A Field Guide to Animal Tracks, third edition This completely updated edition includes 100 color photographs of tracks and sign, more than 1,000 line drawings, and updated nomenclature for all the mammals of North America. The text includes descriptions of habits, habitats, tracks, signs, and ranges and is filled with wonderful natural history stories.

Olaus J. Murie was one of America's leading mammalogists. His extensive fieldwork ranged throughout the United States and Canada, from Labrador to the Aleutian Islands, with special concentration in the Northwest. For twenty-five years he was a field biologist with the U.S. Biological Survey, now the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He also served as director of the Wilderness Society for many years. Murie lived in Moose, Wyoming. He was the author of The Elk of North America and many articles on natural history.

Mark Elbroch is the author of several tracking guides, including two award-winning books, Mammal Tracks and Sign: A Guide to North American Species and, with Eleanor Marks, Bird Tracks and Sign: A Guide to North American Species. He has contributed to numerous North American research projects, from monitoring bears to capturing cougars to inventorying carnivores in dry tropical forests. He is working with Cybertracker Conservation in South Africa to create the first North American evaluation for wildlife trackers. Elbroch currently works as a wildlife consultant, specializing in field inventories and identifying corridors, and teaches workshops on wildlife and tracking across North America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book on Animal Tracks
I enjoy helping Boy Scouts develop the ability to enjoy the outdoors,This year the Boy Scouts of America opened up four merit badges that had been closed out long ago. This is to celebrate the 100th year of BSA. Our Troop chose to do the Tracking Merit Badge. This book is a great aid for such a purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars petersons feild guides
this was a replacement for a lost feild guide that iI already owned but I've used the peterson's guides for years in learning and teaching.. excelant books for the money and unsurpassed in their information...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all-around book
This is a great all around field guide. Good pictures and discriptions. Not good if you are trying to start off. Maybe start with Jon Youngs "Animal Tracks And Signs". Really great to have out on the trail though!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, very comprehensive
This book is excellent.

Great sketches.
Great photos.
Excellent information.
I will keep this with me on any outings where I will be tracking unfamiliar quarry or simply interpreting what I come across.

Definitely recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
The original Peterson's Field Guide to Animal Tracks by Olaus Murie has been an inspiration to generations of trackers, naturalists, and wildlife enthusiasts. It was the first in-depth guide of its kind, and in addition to numerous illustrations of tracks and animal sign, Murie added colorful stories of his own experiences in the great outdoors. The book transcended mere field guide status into the ranks of the classics of natural history.

In the most recent revision of this classic, Mark Elbroch has done an exceptionally tasteful job of updating the guide. He worked to enhance the work of Murie, but keep the essence of the classic work. In particular, Elbroch re-arranged the animal species into phylogenetic order (the order by which animals are related through the course of evolution) allowing for the many advances within the scientific community since the original book was published, and added many color photographs to enhance the illustrations of Murie. As Elbroch notes, the book is still the one Murie wrote; Elbroch simply acted as a caretaker to bring this great book to generations more.

I would recommend this book highly to anyone with an interest in animals or natural history.

4-0 out of 5 stars USA Track & Field Coaching Manual
The manual provides information that will help the beginning coach understand the duties and responsibilities of a coach and how to organize and run a track and field program. However, some of the training concepts, particularly those related to sprint and hurdle events are somewhat outdated, though the coverage of fundamentals related to teaching sprint starts and hurdling technique are well worth the read. The manual needs to be updated to reflect what research shows limits speed in sprinting. The "Spring-Mass Model" should be discussed. The concepts of "Mass-specific Force" and "Ground Force Support" as they relate to top-end running speed should be included. The manual should include up-to-date "minimalist" training protocols that target speed improvement for sprinters without using "old school" drills which have been shown not to improve speed, and sub-maximum speed over-distance runs that have no bearing on speed improvement or "speed-endurance", and in most instances inhibit faster running in sprinters.

5-0 out of 5 stars USA Track. This was for a grandson that is on the track team
My grandson wanted to poll vault and run track. This book is old, but as great on for the beginner. Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
This book provides great insight to a variety of training methods and should be a must for any coach, at any level. There is a level of specificity and clarity to each of the different chapters, and I am particularly caught with the ease of reading even the most technical terms. One could argue that the sprinter training developed is much more specific than the distance running, but the effort, energy and research put into this book's development is solid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book

4-0 out of 5 stars track and field reference
A very easy to read and follow book on Bowerman's philosophy of training in track and field.A common sense approach that is refreshing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read--especially for College Track & Field GA's
When I started coaching track as a graduate assistant at a small Division 3 school, I really needed some help creating workouts for my athletes. I found this book to be extremely useful in its content with regards to workouts, sprint/hurdle/field techniques, etc. Of course, it is esstential that you have some type of track and field experience in order to understand what is being presented in the book. Every coach has their own style of presenting workouts. Fortunately, I have experience running track at a Division 1 level school--so I found it easier to use the workouts in accordance with my own style. Don't forget though--as a coach, you need to take into consideration the level of athlete you are dealing with (ie. no experience, some, elite level, etc). Basically you can use these workouts to fit the level of your athletes. I really liked how the authors incorporated an entire year of workouts for every event in track and field. Overall, I thought it was a good investment for any coach at a highschool or college level.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are no illustrations
There are almost no illustrations of the movements described in this book. There is some good information but I think they are assuming you are already an experienced coach and have seen all these complex movements they talk about.if you are a novice looking for some detailed descriptions of the training movements, along with pictures, this is not the book for you. ... Product Description
This unique sports and labour history charts the revolutionary transformation of track and field over the past thirty years. In this time, the sport has changed from an amateur effort whose governing bodies unfairly controlled its athletes' lives to a professional arena in which athletes have the power to make decisions in their own best interests. While historians have chronicled labour history in team sports such as baseball and football or have lumped track and field into larger studies of Olympic history, Joseph M. Turrini is the first to scrupulously detail the efforts of athletes to reorder labour relations in track and field and to end their decades-long power struggle with governing bodies. Combining social and institutional history and incorporating the recollections of the athletes and meet directors on the front lines, "The End of Amateurism in Track and Field" shows how the athletes thoroughly transformed their sport to end the amateur system in the early 1990s - changes that allowed the athletes to market their potential, drastically increase their earning possibilities, and improve their quality of life. This book reveals how athletes in the 1950s began to harness the courts, legislature, and little-known underground labour relations systems that grew within the sport to untangle the distribution of power and decision-making by the 1990s. Enlivening the narrative with stories such as runner Wes Santee's battle with the Amateur Athletic Union and revelations about the actions of college coaches and rivalries between the NCAA and AAU, Turrini examines the effects of amateurism on athletes and explores how changes in the economic context of track and field and the role of the government helped leverage the end of the 100-year era of amateur track and field. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the effort!
This book has very little to do with weight training for specific events in track and feild. What this book really is , is a half assed attempt to introduce , to the reader , proper weightlifting technique.
Many of the exercises listed have little to do with track and feild.
I was very generous in giving it one star!

The Rise and Fall of a College Sport

On the campus of a small southwest Virginia college, students and coaches struggled to begin and sustain their new sport of track and field athletics. The program originated in annual field days, which consisted of running, jumping, and throwing, along with fun events like sack races. By the 1920s the school tried to schedule a limited program of intercollegiate track and field meets annually. In some years, there were no meets. In others, there were only a few, although individual performances by athletes were very acceptable for a small school. Unfortunately, after 1930 the sport was eliminated altogether from campus activities, despite the recent addition of a new 440-yard cinder track. Why? Was it a lack of coaching, little money to meet expenses, or perhaps a clash with football and basketball for the best athletes? In this book, you will read about the many reasons. You will also get a meet-by-meet summary of track and field athletics at the college during the years from 1895 through 1930, with a full listing of school records. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Track and Field," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Track and Field in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Track and Field when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Track and Field, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
If you don't mind doing a little thumbing through pages each time you want to identify specific tracks or scat you've come across, this book is pretty good and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Broad Coverage & Clear Drawings
This book has excellent drawings of tracks, scats, bird pellets and sometimes nests. Each entry has a map of North America showing the range of the subject.

While some field books on tracking cover just animals this book covers invertebrates, amphibians (frogs included) birds, marsupials, Insectivores and many others.

Each entry takes two facing pages which provide a nice drawing of the subject on the left side and drawings of the track and often scat and nests on the right side.

Each entry follows the same format:

1. A description, beside the drawing of the subject.

2. Track.

3. Trail.

4. Scat.

5. Habitat.

6. Similar species.

7. Other sign.

If you are looking for a book that tells you about the habits and / or life style of the subject this is not the book to fill that need.

Combined with Animal Tracking Basics which does an excellent job of covering the "how to" of tracking a better introduction the the basics of tracking would be hard to find. ... Read more
