I was happy with this book as soon as I opened the front cover.I am a new track coach who "only has a clue" about track from what I have observed from my star athlete daughter.I am pleased with this bookbecause it has a lot of drawings which show good form in executing running, throwing, and jumping events. It is the perfect book for elementaryschool, middle school track athletes. It gives coaching tips after everyexplaination, common errors and corrections, and lots of drills to helpreinforce the new skills the students learn. I highly recommend it forthe beginning track coach, or the old track coach who is getting stale andneeds new games and drills to keep track fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible Reference for New Coaches
There are wonderful gems of wisdom in this coaching manual. I adapted the information in it to start up a grammar school track and field program and we were highly successful in our first season! Coach Wallace gives you the benefits of his 30+ years coaching and it greatly reduced the learning curve for me. This is especially useful for coaches starting up programs on a "shoestring" budget with less-than-optimal facilities. I would highly recommend it to any track and field coach.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Although this book has some helpful information, overall I do not feel that it is ideal for a typical high school track program (in Iowa). There is only information on 300m hurdles, not run in Iowa;we run the 400m hurdles in high school. Also the majority of high schools here do not begin track until February or March, and the training schedule in the book is for a much longer season and seems to be geared more for the college level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok, But!
I found this book to be a valuable resource. I don't like that coach Wallace offers for you to email him for additional info - and when you do, he doesn't reply. Take the offer out of the book then.

4-0 out of 5 stars I am still learning from you.
I enjoyed reading the T&F Coaches's Survival Guide. Although I attended Lindbloom H.S. in the late 60's I was able to learn from you then and now I am learning from you in the 90's. This is a great book for newCoaches. Please send me an update on what you are currently doing. If wouldbe great to hear about you current successes.

4-0 out of 5 stars It will help me a lot, as I don't have an asst. coach.
I liked the practice sessions/periods broken up. We do not have indoor track and I was wondering how to use the practice sessions when we start March 8, practice for about 3 to 4 weeks and then have meets on Tues. andSat. till the middle of May and then have our District meet? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much information
I purchased this book in hopes of making quick identifications of unknown tracks in the field. Although the book is very thorough, there is no way to sort out the information quickly. "Getting Started in Track and Field Athletics" introduces the history, rules, techniques and competition strategies of each event. Ways of making this event fun - for even the most un-athletic child - are suggested.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Field Guide
If you own only one animal track field guide - own this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent field guide
This is what a field guide should be, clear, concise, and easy to use. My wife who is just starting to tune in to nature loves it. She was up to speed in 10 minutes and loving it from then on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have tracking classic
When I was a kid running a trapline in northern Michigan, this was the book I carried in my rucksack.Today, more than 35 years later, I've written 2 books of my own on the subject of tracking wildlife, but this book is still on my bookshelf.Olas Murie was a true American pioneer who led the way into an area where no one else had gone before him.He established the first standards, and while modern genetic and other scientific techniques have increased our knowledge of wildlife manifold over what was known in Murie's day, it was he who laid the foundation on which the rest of us build. This book is a must-have for every tracker's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and comprehensive guide, a little difficult
It is a good and comprehensive guide, it has a lot of animal tracks, I found it a good and complete guide, but honestly sometimes I had a lot of difficult tryng to find some kind of tracks that I found.

In my personal opinion I think that this is a very good book for experts on the field but not so good for beginners in animal tracks. And by the way it doesnt have any color illustration, and altough they are not needed I was very familiar with peterson guides and this one is a little different.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful guide
My wife and I have found this guide to be very useful in interpreting the sign left behind by the creatures resident in our northeastern woods, not only tracks but scat as well (with hundreds of detailed drawings of scat it is as much a guide to those leavings as tracks). The extensive behavioral descriptions are equally useful.I am not clear on the basis for the criticisms contained in the other review concerning animal harassment.Dr. Murie was a dedicated conservationist and President of The Wilderness Society after his retirement from the Fish and Wildlife Service and his respect for the creatures he is describing is evident on every page. While he acknowledges that some tracks were obtained from live-trapped animals, it is clear from the book that the overwhelming mass of the data is from direct field observation from a life spent in the outdoors. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Text
'World Record Breakers in Track & Field Athletics' is an excellent record of prominent athletes and their training routines. Gerald Lawson's text is confident and unadorned, and the athletes he cites are significant achievers. Colourful illustrations serve to enliven the prose. So, too, does the Introduction, tightly written by Anna Bolic, the coach of the Hungarian Women's Track Team. An excerpt is worth quoting;

'Gerald Lawson's book is inspiration to our womens of the field and truck. I use this words when I'm coaching the girls and they love Mr Lawson and his prominent testimonials. Mr Lawson warns about steroids and I say to my girls that they should listen as steroids are bad, especially when they promote facial hair and aggressive gesturings. I know they have followed because the team's razor bill is now down to only $800 a week. Mr Lawson also teaches that smoking before an event is harming to the lunks and chesticals, so now they only light up after a run. My girls want to be just like Mr Lawson, without having to wait months for the operation in a pubic hospital.'

'World Record Breakers in Track & Field Athletics' is essential reading for all athletes and coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Track and Field World Record books
This book is one of the best books on Track and Field athletics and World Record breakers that I have ever read and I must say that I have read quitea few books since I became a Track and Field statician in 1978. I myselfhave been very interested in Track since I was young and read about theamazing feats of Bob Hayes in the Tokyo olympics in 1964.I would have tosay that this book is very well written compared to the other books that Ihave read. If you are mildy or very interested in Track and Field Recordbreakers I would have to suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome Booke
I'm a hurdler and this book provided me with lots of excersizes and times that I should be running.

4-0 out of 5 stars track and field reference
A very easy to read and follow book on Bowerman's philosophy of training in track and field.A common sense approach that is refreshing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read--especially for College Track & Field GA's
When I started coaching track as a graduate assistant at a small Division 3 school, I really needed some help creating workouts for my athletes. I found this book to be extremely useful in its content with regards to workouts, sprint/hurdle/field techniques, etc. Of course, it is esstential that you have some type of track and field experience in order to understand what is being presented in the book. Every coach has their own style of presenting workouts. Fortunately, I have experience running track at a Division 1 level school--so I found it easier to use the workouts in accordance with my own style. Don't forget though--as a coach, you need to take into consideration the level of athlete you are dealing with (ie. no experience, some, elite level, etc). Basically you can use these workouts to fit the level of your athletes. I really liked how the authors incorporated an entire year of workouts for every event in track and field. Overall, I thought it was a good investment for any coach at a highschool or college level.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are no illustrations
There are almost no illustrations of the movements described in this book. There is some good information but I think they are assuming you are already an experienced coach and have seen all these complex movements they talk about.if you are a novice looking for some detailed descriptions of the training movements, along with pictures, this is not the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding. Truely a work of masterful instruction.
Whether you are working on your own self improvement or training others, this track and field book is a must. ... Read more
