I've started looking over this book and Gary Barber has done a great job of capturing what is really needed with starting kids in athletics.Far too man of the "coaches" kids encounter today are ready to have them go pro at any cost.

Gary has done a great job at putting forward the development and making it fun.Assuring that the childs experience is rewarding yet still providing the desire to go higher.A very good piece of work, you should adapt it to the baseball, football and soccer coaches as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars cool!
There aree some weird grownups in Bailey city but could the singing track coach with long hair really be a magical mermaid?

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written Kids' Story
Mermaids Don't Run Track is a good book for 3-5th graders. The characters are action oriented from the first page, and immediately face two interesting mysteries concerning the camp director and the track coach. The Bailey School kids suspect one is a werewolf and the other a mermaid. The art work is also very good and adds detail and interest to the story. The book is approximately 7,000 words long.

A similar book for the same age group which I would recommend is "Abby and the bicycle caper."

4-0 out of 5 stars Liked how Eddie was always trying to be the big shot.
My name is Leigh.I liked that Eddie tried to be always a smart aleck. And how he said that he would prove that Mrs. Waterford wasn't a mermaid. And whenever they got in the lake, Eddie would try to splash her. And I liked when Eddie pulled Liza in the water. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Can You Catch Them?
Track and field is the one sport were an athlete by there single effort of running, jumping, or throwing can establish there superiority over all competitors. Michael D. Davis the author of "Black American Women In Olympic Track and Field" writes an inspiring story of how African American women rose in Olympic Track and Field. Until 1948 Black American women were not allowed to compete in Olympic Track and Field despite there outstanding in the sport. Davis glorifies athletes like Alice Coachman, Mae Faggs, Wilma Rudolf, Earlene Brown, Willye White, Wyomia Tyus, Edith McGuire, Chandra Chessebrough, Evelyn Ashford, Valarie Brisco-Hooks, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Jakie Joyner-Kerse and many more. He tells about there life stories and the many adversities they had to go through. These women were said to be manly and had to undergo criticism from newspaper writers and television and radio host. For three generations black women have played a major role in the Olympic track and field events and still continue till this day.
Davis includes illustrations of these great athletes, this helps the reader envision what the conditions were in those times. These stories are in great detail and reveal fascinating information about these female runners, jumpers, and throwers. Some of the athletes still alive praise this book for the dedication Davis put into the writing of this book. There are a few negatives about this book, the writing sometime drags on and drifts to other athletes off the topic. Although the reading about some unknown athletes can be boring, it is interesting to learn about these different people. The book is easy to understand and read, it is overall a wonderful read and I recommend to any athlete who would like to be inspired by other great athletes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Text
'World Record Breakers in Track & Field Athletics' is an excellent record of prominent athletes and their training routines. Gerald Lawson's text is confident and unadorned, and the athletes he cites are significant achievers. Colourful illustrations serve to enliven the prose. So, too, does the Introduction, tightly written by Anna Bolic, the coach of the Hungarian Women's Track Team. An excerpt is worth quoting;

'Gerald Lawson's book is inspiration to our womens of the field and truck. I use this words when I'm coaching the girls and they love Mr Lawson and his prominent testimonials. Mr Lawson warns about steroids and I say to my girls that they should listen as steroids are bad, especially when they promote facial hair and aggressive gesturings. I know they have followed because the team's razor bill is now down to only $800 a week. Mr Lawson also teaches that smoking before an event is harming to the lunks and chesticals, so now they only light up after a run. My girls want to be just like Mr Lawson, without having to wait months for the operation in a pubic hospital.'

'World Record Breakers in Track & Field Athletics' is essential reading for all athletes and coaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Track and Field World Record books
This book is one of the best books on Track and Field athletics and World Record breakers that I have ever read and I must say that I have read quitea few books since I became a Track and Field statician in 1978. I myselfhave been very interested in Track since I was young and read about theamazing feats of Bob Hayes in the Tokyo olympics in 1964.I would have tosay that this book is very well written compared to the other books that Ihave read. If you are mildy or very interested in Track and Field Recordbreakers I would have to suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is unparrelled in its information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner
Let's say you haven't run since you were in high school, and only then because they made you in gym class. Now, because you've seen a story about a 10k run or someone older than you talks about a marathon they participated in, you are thinking of doing some running yourself. This is the book for you.

While some stuff may seem like common sense overall it is a very helpful volume with lots of good info. And when you show up for your for serious run you'll know what those things are on peoples' arms and why some guys are running with no shoes on. There's also a lot of tongue-in-cheek illustrations and info but not enough, I think, to make serious long-term runners that interested in it. I think that the addition of some running plans and perhaps a list of some of the more famous races and when they are run as an appendix might have earned this book a fifth star. That doesn't mean it's not a fun book! ... Read more
