Volleyball: Steps to Success establishes a solid foundation by detailing proper footwork and posture before moving on to the individual skills of serving, passing, setting, attacking, blocking, and digging. Recent changes in the game, such as the addition of the libero position and rally scoring, are highlighted in the team-oriented steps covering offense, defense, transitioning, and out-of-system play. The carefully selected drills and step-by-step instruction speed the development process, and the scoring system for each drill and step helps gauge progress along the way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and full of god information but it's better for a club then a single person.
Everything thing is explained nicely and will improve your game there is one troubling part though. In the warm ups it says to do the exercises that will benifit you in your area of trouble. While some of them are obvious on how they help the others aren't. I'm sure after doing them for a time you will figure it out but it would be nice to have it clearly stated in the book.
Also this book is good for individuals, coachs and teams, but as a single person it takes more work. You're going to want at least on partner most of the time. Some drills require more people so you won't get the full benefit. However it is possible to modify most of the drills to two people. The hardest thing for a single person is probably staying motivated.
On a side note, you'll need more then a volleyball and a net. Some of the other things they use are a medicine ball, jump rope, ladder, something to mark a target like a cone, and tape or chalk. Plus it also helps to have a gym you can use with a net.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the steps of Volleyball.
I was very impressed with how Coach Bonnie Kenny, and Cindy set up an ideal format for players to learn and know the basics of Voleyball success.
This book is similar to John Wooden's Pyramid for Success!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as the title suggest
It's the v-ball coaching bible, that's for sure.In building/maintaining a program it's a big help. There's some good suggestions in there for new and old coaches, I don't know any coaches in our system without this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is helpful
There are some chapters of this book that are great--they break down the skill into concise teachable parts and give drills that work on specific aspects of the drill. Then there are some chapters that don't help at all--give a vague breakdown of the skill but have no visual items or drills. Each chapter is done by a college/pro coach. This book does break down a lot of the off-court stuff--like pre-season paperwork to how to start a booster club.It also talks strategy (almost more than skills).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips!
This book is worth every penny. It is written by the legends of the the game.I have read the book from cover to cover, and can still pick it up and learn something new.It has some great tips about how to motivate, communicate and teach everything about volleyball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fundamentals and motivational
I have just finished this book before my club season is starting and I highly recommend it. The book applies to many areas of volleyball from youth to college/national and from men to women.

If you are looking for a beginners coaching book that outlines the skills in detail with a bunch of drills, this is NOT the book for you.

The caliber of contributors is excellent and the chapters were put together nicely...it flowed from front to back.I've played and coached for many years.I learned a few new things in this book, but I also felt like the book gave me a different perspective on areas I already knew.I will probably read/review this book prior to my club seasons.

There were a few graphics/demonstrations.There were great pics illustrating Conditioning and Stretching. There were a few sketches of attacking and digging.Jim Coleman did a nice job on Statistics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
a really good book about weight training, with specific drills for volleyboll. I have already increased my jumping and endurance.

4-0 out of 5 stars A-
This book is straightforward, unlike Complete Conditioning for Volleyball. I know exactly when and how to work out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Never played volleyball before?
Now I realize that I have had more experience in volleyball then most people but this book was insulting to my intelligence. If you are a knowledgeable player turned coach then don't waste your money. Many of the notions are outdated and many of drills a five year old could invent. This book was written by great volleyball minds, but for some reason it falls short in all areas. If you are a new to this sport as a coach or player then this book is great for you. 4-0 out of 5 stars Many Drills
I use many of these drills for my Freshman and JV teams.A lot of them are too complicated for this level but would proabably be good for advanced club teams, varsity and college. This is a good resource for coaches at all levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Drills, drills, and more drills
Coach Martin is a hoot.I had the pleasure of sitting in a session in a coaches seminar where she was one of the featured speakers. She is energetic, smart, entertaining and knows a whole lot about volleyball. She is the head women's coach at Central Missouri Stat U and has been there since forever.

The problem is that it is really difficult to translate all that she embodies into a book.Don't get me wrong, the drills are awesome and they are presented nicely, but that is what you would expect from a drill book. But, the sense of fun, the way she conveys the knowledge, that is kind of lost in the translation. The main thing I like about this is that the skill level progresses with each drill. So if you are dying for some new drills, here is a bunch, but make sure that they suit your needs.Another good point is that these drills are easily adaptable, so it is easy for coaches to change them to fit their own needs.

I just wish they could package Coach Martin's dynamic personality and enthousiasm into a book.Oh well....

4-0 out of 5 stars You can never have enough drills!
Peggy Martin's book has been a valuable addition to my arsenal of drills, because I believe a coach can never have access to too many drills. It's important for players to get a feel for a skill by attacking it in a number of different ways, and using several drills in sequence allows players to continue working on the skill without getting bored, which is important to the learning process.

Adding Peggy Martin's "101 Volleyball Drills" to my library has helped keep my high school players on task without putting their minds to sleep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
This book was very informative!I ordered several Volleyball coaching books and found this one to be the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
Sometimes as player it is hard to break down a skill in verbal cues in order to teach beginning players as a coach. This book is great at doing just that!I even took this book to practice and read to my girls out of it.This book introduces a skill, gives lots of pictures of a player going the skill, breaks the skill down into step-by-step actions, gives some verbal cues that you can teach with and then later remind your players with and gives some drills. Also with each skill, the book has a section on teaching beginning players and then a section on breaking bad habits. This is my favorite coaching resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching VB Successfully by Sally Kus
I have probably read most every book on vb published recently, and this book ranks up there at the top alongside Mike Hebert's "Insights & Strategies for Winning Volleyball".Sally covers all aspects of the sport from grassroot to club to college and from starting a program to successfully managing and sustaining a vb program. This book is unexcelled. It gives a step-by-step for setting up a program or a practice. It gives details on all of the vb skills along with appropriate drills and what to look for.Unlike most books on the subject, it is very relevant to today's vb, as it addresses rally scoring, overhand passing, serving from various points along the baseline, backrow hitting, etc.I would recommend it for anyone involved in coaching vb or wanting to improve their game.

5-0 out of 5 stars AVCA Coaching volleyball
I have been coaching volleyball for over 20 years and still consider this one of, if not THE, best comprehensive text for volleyball coaches - beginner and experienced alike.

solid book on many aspects of coaching. Highly recommend

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed instruction
Asher's approach of employing experts in each chapter to discuss their respective forte yields a thorough and insightful text.I have upwards of 12 coaching books and this one I think to be the most valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for reference
This book is a revamped version of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Handbook.Like the title of the review suggests, it is a great reference.I find myself going to it a lot in order to refresh mymemory about some technical aspects of the game.

If you wanted just onebook to help you with your coaching or with your own game. This isprobably the book for you.If you have a deep burning desire to delve intoother aspects of coaching and the game of volleyball, this is a great waystation. One of the many books that you need to keep in your library, buta very dog eared book due to the many times you will need to look into thebook.

Like the previous reviewer said, an excellent book for beginningto intermediate players and coaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
The book's material is useful for the beginning and intermediate volleyball coach. I have been feeling my way in coaching my team in small tournaments for some years now, but reading this book makes me feel likeI've gone to a volleyball coaching clinic.

I especially like the way thebook emphasizes the development of each of the skills and positions in ateam. Also, therapy of the common injuries included at the end are a greatplus.

On the whole it has a very well-rounded treatment of coaching, including not only the physical, but also psychological, medical andnutritional elements that have to be considered by a good volleyball coach. The book is overflowing with actual coaching experience of a number ofpeople. I learned a lot from it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Lastima de fotografias.

3-0 out of 5 stars Geared for the masses...
Good book, but its only purpose is to appeal to "the masses." Most volleyball books are designed to help everyone; whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Let's face it, if you're trying to make a lot of money off a book...that's the best way to go. However, if you're already a good player, you're not going to benefit much from this book. You're much better off buying Mark Tanner's Smarter Volleyball. It actually talks about the "mental game," rather than the traditional pass, set, hit scenario that you see in most of these books. I've been Karch's biggest fan for most of my life, but to be honest...this book is a waste of time if you're actually wanting to get to a higher level of play. If you're just starting out, buy the book...but if you're looking for more indepth strategies, go with Mark Tanner's book or one of the "lesser known" authors...they're probably not in it for the "big" money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every volleyball player should buy this book!
This book has great photos and a balanced overall approach to beach volleyball. It's got all the basics covered and the stories that are peppered throughout the book make for interesting reading. I would probably have liked to hear more about the players and matches of the past, but I think Karch wanted this to be an instructional book rather than one for entertainment. Still I would have preferred more opinions and insights into the players and strategies. I hope that Karch does a second edition with the new AVP and it's rules.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
This book is great for the beginner. It does not go in depth into strategy, reading hitters, positioning, etc...It does give GREAT tips on imporving your overall game, endurance, shot placement, et al.There is a bit of humor mixed into the fray, which adds the human touch.

When I bought this book i was a beginner. My serves were poor, sets average, kills average, blocks average, and passes were mediocre. After just a few weeks i had a great jump serve, monster kills, and incredible blocks.I love it.

If you are a beginner and want to improve quickly - this is for you.If you have been around a bit - you might find something useful in here but you probably already know this stuff. In depth strategy is lacking.

3-0 out of 5 stars For Fundamentals Only
If you are looking for a book that teaches solid fundamentals and a goodworkout regimen, this is fine. However, if you already have someexperience as a player and are looking for advanced tips and strategies, such as how to read blocks, using the wind on the serve, reading hitters, defensive positioning/strategies, advanced hand placement techniques, youwill not find them here.Hopefully Karch will write another book goinginto these details. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Simple and understandable book. Dont expect much but the name of the book is a hit. You can understand fundamentals and get theoretic base for this game. It is what you really need if you have not read anything about volleyball and need something to start with. Book is good if you have never played volleyball or if you have never had coach or never have read anything about volleyball. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book on conditioning.
This book was pretty good.Had some very nice exercises that I hadn't thought of using.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It!
I absolutely loved Peak Conditioning Training for Volleyball. Not only did it include everything a player or coach could want from a strength and conditioning standpoint but the majority of the exercises and drills can be performed alone or with a partner. This aspect is great for players like me who are looking to improve their fitness in the off-season. No full-team or volleyball facility required!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Volleyball Fitness Book!
Peak Conditioning Training for Volleyball is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to volleyball strength and conditioning training. The book is comprehensive, extremely well organized, and far and away the best title of its kind on the market today (and I've read them all). The author takes the time to explain things in clear detail, not getting carried away with his expertise, which is the case with a few of the other volleyball conditioning books I've read. This makes the book appropriate for all ability and experience levels from the beginning player to the most advance athlete. I highly recommed this product to all players, coaches, and fitness trainers involved in the great sport of volleyball. My advice: Buy it!

2-0 out of 5 stars waste of money, sorry
This book is a waste of money. Some of the exercises are the direct way to injury (e.g. full squat and leg press "lowering the resistance as far as possible" good-bye sweet meniscus!!). The exercises are ok, but how on earth can somebody introduce them without explaining the risks and safety instructions!?! Same with stretching in hyperlordosis....!
The author comes from basketball and didn't even take the time to redesign the sketches of the court drills. ...not very professional.
The general introductions into the different topics are mainly ok.
I recommend "Complete Conditioning for Volleyball" and "The Volleyball Coacing Bible"; that is helpful and professional sport literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
Excellent book!! As a trainer, I used the various techniques in this book to improve and perfect the fitness levels and sport specific abilities of my athletes. The step by step methods implored by author Tom Emma is unparalleled. I highly recommend this book not only to volleyball players but to those looking to improve their respective fitness levels. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Volleyball full of practical help
Years ago, when I was a new and struggling volleyball coach for a Christian school, I felt discouraged as I attempted to teach the players. The drills I came up with weren't gamelike and didn't promote team unity. Enter Don Casey, volleyball coach extraodinaire who played under greats like Marv Varonee and Bill Neville. I attended a few of his clinics and started to finally understand how to teach and coach effectively. He is also a strong Christian. My team went on to win state. Now all of Don's wisdom including some excellent devotionals taken straight from volleyball are in this 377 page volume. This book will make any coach, athlete or player better at volleyball and at life. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (1)

4-0 out of 5 stars As close to a How-To Guide as you're going to get.....
This book is pretty close to being a how to guide. Coach Gozansky has thought of just about everything that is relevant to running a good volleyball program. This is not to say that you need to follow the book word for word, but she has set out a lot of information on issues that most people would not have thought of when they start coaching.

The technical section of the skills and strategy are pretty reasonable. But since I am a believer in the nuances of the game, I can't abide by learning the game by the book. You really have to be a observer and a student of the game in order to gain the necessary nuances in order to be a good game coach. So I don't believe that any book on skill is ever adequate. However, everything else mentioned in this book is very good. This is a great reference book for someone who want to build a program, whether it is in the colleges or in high school. The information set forth are pragmatic and reasonable, the presentation clear and concise.

I would recommend this highly to any coach, including club coaches.
