5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Young Players
Excellent ideas for teaching young players the basic skills they need to evolve into club players.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ever!
Excellent coaching tool.My husband coaches a 13-14 year old girls vb team and this is without a doubt the best book we have found to learn all about volleyball.I check books out from the library to preview them and this is the only one that we felt was worth purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars mom
Great book for moms, teens, or anyone who wants some information and helpful hints on how to be a better volleyball player. gives step by step drills broken down into categories such as.... serving, movement, spiking, etc.even a novice like me can understand the book and use the information to help a player become a better player.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Out There
This book helped our team to a winning season last year and it provides everything needed for victory other than talent. The book covers all the tipes and positions needed for a successful offense. It provides the basic form needed for all hits and gives strategy tips for all stages of the game.It teaches blocking and digging and the finer points of defense.Additionally, it gives all of the rotations for an advanced team. The best thing about the book though is that it provides drills to teach your players all the steps needed. This is the only book you will ever need as a player or a coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and full of god information but it's better for a club then a single person.
Everything thing is explained nicely and will improve your game there is one troubling part though. In the warm ups it says to do the exercises that will benifit you in your area of trouble. While some of them are obvious on how they help the others aren't. I'm sure after doing them for a time you will figure it out but it would be nice to have it clearly stated in the book.
Also this book is good for individuals, coachs and teams, but as a single person it takes more work. You're going to want at least on partner most of the time. Some drills require more people so you won't get the full benefit. However it is possible to modify most of the drills to two people. The hardest thing for a single person is probably staying motivated.
On a side note, you'll need more then a volleyball and a net. Some of the other things they use are a medicine ball, jump rope, ladder, something to mark a target like a cone, and tape or chalk. Plus it also helps to have a gym you can use with a net. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Never played volleyball before?
Now I realize that I have had more experience in volleyball then most people but this book was insulting to my intelligence. If you are a knowledgeable player turned coach then don't waste your money. Many of the notions are outdated and many of drills a five year old could invent. This book was written by great volleyball minds, but for some reason it falls short in all areas. If you are a new to this sport as a coach or player then this book is great for you. I gave it two stars because there was one clever drill in it that I will use. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars don't wasteyour money
This book is a waste of money.I am an assistant coach for a 5th grade girl's volleyball team.I was hoping to learn something new, get some creative ideas on coaching or building teamwork, or at least come away with one good drill. The book offers none of the above.it's very basic and there is nothing original in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching this age group
I've been around volleyball for many years as a player, coach and ref, so I wasn't looking for a primer on coaching. Although I've had many opportunities to teach fundamentals in a clinic settingI'm getting my first opportunity to coach JO youth for a season. This book was very helpful in getting me to understand that 14 year old girls are going to need a somewhat different approach than adult and high school players and gave me great ideas to help me be successful with them. The assistant coaches were also given the book sothat we all were, quite literally, on the same page during practices. Everyone thinks it is quite valuable and are committed to trying the book's approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Youth Volleyball
Book in excellent condition, took a few weeks to receive.Book is great for those interested in "remembering" how to play volleyball and how to help coach their own children or a team.Good foundation basic information.Helped my daughter with her serves. Would buy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read for starting a youth program
I'm a varsity coach, so stepping back and teaching youth wanted to get a refresher course as we set up our youth program. This book is a big help, though for the experienced coach I would assume they know most of it but could use it as a refresher as well.Beginner coaches it would be great, especially for middle school level and below levels. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book

From choosing a team, to conditioning, to strategy and scouting opponentants, this book covers them all.

This book is a must for every volleyball coaches library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Volleyball Strategies
Having not played volleyball since junior high, I was looking for a good book that would give me an understanding of all angles of the game. This book is a collection of essays on each facet by different well respected coaches. Each coach was chosen according to their strong suit to lay out their individual strategies and techniques on a particular piece of the game. I found the book to be full of tidbits that make watching and playing the game much more enjoyable. The Volleyball Coaching Bible

5-0 out of 5 stars volleyball coaching bible
A book of this caliber with its wealth of information and knowledge is not easily surpassed. Those coaches at the junior high level that are seeking to improve their records for the sake of promotion to the high school level would do well to have a copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as the title suggest
It's the v-ball coaching bible, that's for sure.In building/maintaining a program it's a big help. There's some good suggestions in there for new and old coaches, I don't know any coaches in our system without this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is helpful
There are some chapters of this book that are great--they break down the skill into concise teachable parts and give drills that work on specific aspects of the drill. Then there are some chapters that don't help at all--give a vague breakdown of the skill but have no visual items or drills. Each chapter is done by a college/pro coach. This book does break down a lot of the off-court stuff--like pre-season paperwork to how to start a booster club.It also talks strategy (almost more than skills). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Public lending libraries will find it a popular choice
Misty: Digging Deep in Volleyball and Life comes from a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and offers a vivid autobiography documenting her childhood and behind-the-scenes moments of her Olympic victories. From personal challenges she's never publicly acknowledged before to personal challenges, this is a 'must' for sports libraries and collections where Misty's name is already well known. Public lending libraries will find it a popular choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Eyes Got Misty (Pardon the Pun)
Misty May-Treanor is one of the most successful professional volleyball players in the history of the sport. She's won over 100 tournaments, two Olympic gold medals, numerous accolades, etc. etc.

I have been a fan of May-Treanor since the 1990s. I immediately pre-ordered my copy of her autobiography via Amazon.com. I wanted to compare her biography to other notable volleyball legends, Sinjin Smith and Karch Kiraly.

Overall, I would say her autobiography supplanted Smith and Kiraly's efforts as my top favorites to the top spot. Without giving away too many details, her book offers insight into her upbringing, personal life with her husband (pro baseball player, Matt Treanor), moments of greatness and sadness (you might want to have tissues near you) as well as offering life lessons.

This is a wonderful and inspirational book for any sports fan (especially young women).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
I love Misty May Treanor and I am still working my way through the book.I thought I would fly through it based on enjoying her story.Instead, I find I am flying through it because there is a lot of repetition. So far, a lot of statistics of Misty's personal volleyball highlights (number of digs, kills, spikes, sets, etc).It is somewhat interesting but it reads like a lot of the "jock" books do.Not a lot of depth. It seems like every page she repeats what a gracious, caring and giving person she is.I already knew that and don't need to read it on every page.Hoping for a surprise in the book and will update my review if anything changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
I find that one of the best ways to judge books is by the "bother your spouse" factor.Typically my wife is reading some book on a topic that I don't care for, and she'll interrupt me "Can I read you a passage?" or quote me some one-liner from her book that she found interesting.Over the course of a novel, she'll typically "bother" me, let's say, five times. My response is typically to chuckle, more often than not, just to humor her.I rarely "bother" her when I'm reading.

I found Misty's new book "Digging Deep..." so entertaining that for the first time I found myself "bothering my spouse"frequently. It seemed like I "bothered" her over 10 times, to share a line or a story from the book. Some of it was sharing insights into the depths of the volleyball world, and some of it was just hilarious stories that Misty has experienced.

Misty's book reminds me of the promo line from an old movie entitled "Stuart Saves His Family".The line goes:"You'll laugh because it's not your family, and you'll cry because it is."I did find myself laughing out loud, as well as having tears well up in my eyes while reading Misty's book.

I highly recommend Misty's book for its unprecedented "bother your spouse" factor. It's "bother your spouse" factor is so high that my wife can't wait to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Misty - The Untold Story
Misty's new book is a must-have.Who would have ever thought that behind her apparent happy-go-lucky personna belies a troubled upbringing? Her rise to pop star status, despite her difficult chidhood upbringing, is a phenonemenal story. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
This book was very informative!I ordered several Volleyball coaching books and found this one to be the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
Sometimes as player it is hard to break down a skill in verbal cues in order to teach beginning players as a coach. This book is great at doing just that!I even took this book to practice and read to my girls out of it.This book introduces a skill, gives lots of pictures of a player going the skill, breaks the skill down into step-by-step actions, gives some verbal cues that you can teach with and then later remind your players with and gives some drills. Also with each skill, the book has a section on teaching beginning players and then a section on breaking bad habits. This is my favorite coaching resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching VB Successfully by Sally Kus
I have probably read most every book on vb published recently, and this book ranks up there at the top alongside Mike Hebert's "Insights & Strategies for Winning Volleyball".Sally covers all aspects of the sport from grassroot to club to college and from starting a program to successfully managing and sustaining a vb program. This book is unexcelled. It gives a step-by-step for setting up a program or a practice. It gives details on all of the vb skills along with appropriate drills and what to look for.Unlike most books on the subject, it is very relevant to today's vb, as it addresses rally scoring, overhand passing, serving from various points along the baseline, backrow hitting, etc.I would recommend it for anyone involved in coaching vb or wanting to improve their game.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite enough
I was under the impression this book was strickly a "volleyball weight training" guide, which it is not.I did however enjoy the weight training sections that were quite generic in nature but informative none the less. If you are looking for a generic overview of weight training for sports, this is your book.If you want an intense guide into volleyball specific weight training, look into another series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Volleyball Drills
This weight training guide is full of great drills for volleyball players.Increase your jumping and endurance, and keep training with these programs in the off-season.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
a really good book about weight training, with specific drills for volleyboll. I have already increased my jumping and endurance.

4-0 out of 5 stars A-
This book is straightforward, unlike Complete Conditioning for Volleyball. I know exactly when and how to work out.

The off and pre-season programs are very solid.

The only thing I wish it had in it is more agility and plyometrics programs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AVCA Coaching volleyball
I have been coaching volleyball for over 20 years and still consider this one of, if not THE, best comprehensive text for volleyball coaches - beginner and experienced alike.

...and I purchased it for less than I could have with my AVCA membership.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
solid book on many aspects of coaching. Highly recommend

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed instruction
Asher's approach of employing experts in each chapter to discuss their respective forte yields a thorough and insightful text.I have upwards of 12 coaching books and this one I think to be the most valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for reference
This book is a revamped version of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Handbook.Like the title of the review suggests, it is a great reference.I find myself going to it a lot in order to refresh mymemory about some technical aspects of the game.

If you wanted just onebook to help you with your coaching or with your own game. This isprobably the book for you.If you have a deep burning desire to delve intoother aspects of coaching and the game of volleyball, this is a great waystation. One of the many books that you need to keep in your library, buta very dog eared book due to the many times you will need to look into thebook.

Like the previous reviewer said, an excellent book for beginningto intermediate players and coaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
The book's material is useful for the beginning and intermediate volleyball coach. I have been feeling my way in coaching my team in small tournaments for some years now, but reading this book makes me feel likeI've gone to a volleyball coaching clinic.

I especially like the way thebook emphasizes the development of each of the skills and positions in ateam. Also, therapy of the common injuries included at the end are a greatplus.

On the whole it has a very well-rounded treatment of coaching, including not only the physical, but also psychological, medical andnutritional elements that have to be considered by a good volleyball coach. The book is overflowing with actual coaching experience of a number ofpeople. I learned a lot from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for New Coaches
Great for a new volleyball coach.Does not offer to much for the modified levels, but is great for JV and Varsity.

3-0 out of 5 stars It not usefull
some of the drills design so so primitive may apply for 12'year division, another word, "it is not the game like".

The earlier version of "101 Volleyball Drills" that better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!
I am a new head coach of a High School Varsity program and I needed something I could quickly reference when I saw my team or a team in my program struggling with a part of the game. Not only is it wonderful for planning my own practices, but it has been easy to share with my JV and Freshman coaches when they needed help with certain skills. I would recommend this book to anyone struggling to keep practices engaging and fresh for their team.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many Drills
I use many of these drills for my Freshman and JV teams.A lot of them are too complicated for this level but would proabably be good for advanced club teams, varsity and college. This is a good resource for coaches at all levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Drills, drills, and more drills
Coach Martin is a hoot.I had the pleasure of sitting in a session in a coaches seminar where she was one of the featured speakers. She is energetic, smart, entertaining and knows a whole lot about volleyball. She is the head women's coach at Central Missouri Stat U and has been there since forever.

The problem is that it is really difficult to translate all that she embodies into a book.Don't get me wrong, the drills are awesome and they are presented nicely, but that is what you would expect from a drill book. But, the sense of fun, the way she conveys the knowledge, that is kind of lost in the translation. The main thing I like about this is that the skill level progresses with each drill. So if you are dying for some new drills, here is a bunch, but make sure that they suit your needs.Another good point is that these drills are easily adaptable, so it is easy for coaches to change them to fit their own needs.

I just wish they could package Coach Martin's dynamic personality and enthousiasm into a book.Oh well.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book of Drills
Not a season goes by I don't give this book a twice over to look for some drill I might of missed, great read for new and experienced coaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh no, not another drill book! Well, kind of...
One problem with being a beginning coach is the constant and nagging suspicion that there is one absolute and definitive drill that will magically solve all of your problems for you.Well, no.It takes asystematic design of the practice and a good understanding to coach thesport. But what is a beginning coach to do?

This book is a good sourcefor drills, but Coach Wise presents the drills in a format that encouragespeople to think about the skill first and then go into the drills. This isa drill book but it is a little more than that. Each chapter breaks downthe essntials of the theme of the chapter and THEN goes into the drills. For those desperate for more drills, that does not prove to be enough of aside track to force them to think about what they are teaching, but forthose who do stop and reflect on the technique and skills required toperform the drills, it is a nice touch that proves to be very beneficial. Because of the scattered nature of the book, a name college coachwroteeach of the chapters, this is a compendium of knowledge which is quiteuneven in terms of writing. But is serves its purpose well.

I wouldrecommend Arie Selinger's book and Mike Hebert's book for more advancedcoaches and Bill Neville's book for beginning coaches who actually wants tocoach and not just throw the kids into a maze of drills.

3-0 out of 5 stars GOOD PLACE TO START.
This book has a lot of good basic drill for the technical game of volleyball. I must say, for the coach that does not have a lot of drill tucked away in his/her head, this book is a definiteasset. It has a lotof good solid drills that would help any coach. I would have like to haveseen some more technical drill, but on the other hand, if your team canhandle all of the drills provided, your doing alright..Well worth themoney.. Thanks ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An older guide
I was in search of some resources to guide a brand new coach who isn't all that familiar with the technical details of the game. This book contains lengthy descriptions of the rules and explanations of the different roles each player has on the court.I found all of this helpful. My only complaint is since this is an older book it does not mention rally scoring which is predominatly in use today. The book centers on describing the old 15 point system, and the rules associated with that.I'm glad that it took the time to explain what each job on the court is and so I am happy with my purchase as a whole.

3-0 out of 5 stars great!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for every volleyball player
"Peak conditioning training for volleyball" by Thomas Emma is a book that you just can't do without, especially when you begin your adventure with volleyball. It guides you through all phases of volleyball conditioning training. Warm-up excercises are great - I do them before every physical activity thinking "how could I do without them". Conditioning excercises are not new, most probably every gym coach would show you them, but the book gives the systematic approach and I can definitely recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book on conditioning.
This book was pretty good.Had some very nice exercises that I hadn't thought of using.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It!
I absolutely loved Peak Conditioning Training for Volleyball. Not only did it include everything a player or coach could want from a strength and conditioning standpoint but the majority of the exercises and drills can be performed alone or with a partner. This aspect is great for players like me who are looking to improve their fitness in the off-season. No full-team or volleyball facility required!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Volleyball Fitness Book!
Peak Conditioning Training for Volleyball is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to volleyball strength and conditioning training. The book is comprehensive, extremely well organized, and far and away the best title of its kind on the market today (and I've read them all). The author takes the time to explain things in clear detail, not getting carried away with his expertise, which is the case with a few of the other volleyball conditioning books I've read. This makes the book appropriate for all ability and experience levels from the beginning player to the most advance athlete. I highly recommed this product to all players, coaches, and fitness trainers involved in the great sport of volleyball. My advice: Buy it!

2-0 out of 5 stars waste of money, sorry
This book is a waste of money. Some of the exercises are the direct way to injury (e.g. full squat and leg press "lowering the resistance as far as possible" good-bye sweet meniscus!!). The exercises are ok, but how on earth can somebody introduce them without explaining the risks and safety instructions!?! Same with stretching in hyperlordosis....!
The author comes from basketball and didn't even take the time to redesign the sketches of the court drills. ...not very professional.
The general introductions into the different topics are mainly ok.
I recommend "Complete Conditioning for Volleyball" and "The Volleyball Coacing Bible"; that is helpful and professional sport literature.
