5-0 out of 5 stars Marv Dunphy's "Volleyball Today"
Marv Dunphy's "Volleyball Today"--a review

This is an excellent book. It covers all of the volleyball skills and gives cues for teaching.I've been coached by Coach Marv at the Volleyball Hall of Fame clinic, and he is excellent. His book is the same. The book is a bit dated, as it's before rally scoring and let serves, but that doesn't detract from its relevancy to today's volleyball. It is clear and concise and is easy and fun to read.It offers some excellent drills and insights into the game.It covers mental and physical side as well.It touches on offensive and defensive play, although brief it's well done. The diagrams are well done and easily understood.

I've probably read every current volleyball book on the market, and this is certainly one of the better ones.I coach juniors, youths and lower level high school ball, but I believe it would appeal to coaches of all levels. Its checklist for emphasis and common errors is quite useful. It's a bit pricey at $47, but if you look around you can get it from Amazon for under $20 including S/H.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book on Volleyball full of practical help
Years ago, when I was a new and struggling volleyball coach for a Christian school, I felt discouraged as I attempted to teach the players. The drills I came up with weren't gamelike and didn't promote team unity. Enter Don Casey, volleyball coach extraodinaire who played under greats like Marv Varonee and Bill Neville. I attended a few of his clinics and started to finally understand how to teach and coach effectively. He is also a strong Christian. My team went on to win state. Now all of Don's wisdom including some excellent devotionals taken straight from volleyball are in this 377 page volume. This book will make any coach, athlete or player better at volleyball and at life. ... Read more

Product Description
Coaching Volleyball Successfully concentrates on teaching the club, junior high, or high school coach how to explain, demonstrate, and direct the practice of fundamental skills and strategies of volleyball. This book is not limited to teaching coaches how to perform required volleyball skills, but rather focuses on how to teach these skills to young or inexperienced athletes. The book is also designed to help coaches with high-level sport skills tailor their instruction to meet the basic needs of beginning players.

Used as the text for Level 1 of USA Volleyball’s Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP), this book is full of proven techniques that make it ideal for home study and as a reference at team practices. Because coaching involves two distinct functions, teaching skills and organizing practices, Coaching Volleyball Successfully is divided into two sections.

The Volleyball Coaching Guide details how to perform and teach fundamental volleyball skills and includes over 40 drills and activities to help your players improve their skills quickly.

The Volleyball Planning Guide explains how to plan your season and conduct effective practices with ready-to-use practice plans that will help prepare your players for their first match. ... Read more

Product Description
A high level of results in volleyball sport in the late 1990s demands an ever-wider basis for selection, both basic and complex psychological, as well as motor preparation of volleyball players. This level can only be attained through many years of planned and systematic imitation of movements (early specialization), planned on the scientific basis of modern education and training. Many years of systematic and complex preparation of organism of young players are necessary in order to prepare them for physical and psychological efforts, demanded by high level of training and competition. One has to bear in mind that this youngest age (6-14 years of age) is indeed the most convenient for learning. It is the age in which the greatest biological growth and the development of technique, speed and agility happens. One should not forget as well that the way of working and living (school, learning, nutrition, fun, sleep, etc.), are factors that have a great impact on achieving the highest results. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Concept to Practice- Drill to Real
This little tactical and more strategy, the book and DVD definitely help season/club whom want to coach volleyball. The contents material between the Jr. HP to JR. Olympic; or CAP I to CAP II; or High School coach that had college volleyball level. You won't find much in depth about how to train a "setter - hand, footwork..." however when running a drill it will mention when the setter should do an eyes check.

You also can see how design a drill (big task of a coach) that close to game like, that means after a drill, the player "automatically reflex" in real game (I don't like the player try to apply).

Serve-receive strategies: different formation "W", "U".
Lengthy of pro-cons of serving techniques to me not really science because no data back up or does not make any different for player play in back row pass ball all year long (I were in 80 player no libero position).

Some of the drills are awesome that afterward you will have a insight how to tailor your own drills more effectively.

I highly recommend it for HS coach and Jr. volleyball club coach. Believe me you won't regret it, "money back guarantee".

4-0 out of 5 stars intermediate coaching aid
This book by the USAV is a good source for some intermediate strategy systems. Some higher level components also feature but more detail would be desirable.

The visual aid - DVD has some good footage so to let the coach see how drills work from the paper to an actual setting. It is a good source for coaches when considering what types of tactics to use in a game, seeing how drills work (without the tutorial in advance, like the ones seen on youtube), and some fundamental and timing issues in the way drills operate.

Another updated edition would be very much appreciated.

4-0 out of 5 stars good contribution
This is a good book for all trainers and coaches. The defensive and offensive sytems are well explained and the added DVD presents clear demonstrations. The book however may havebeen written for USA educative as no reference is made to the use of the libero in both reception and defensive. The chapter on spread stategy therefore becomes incomprehensible as compared to practices in modern volleybal where the libero plays important role . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of drills for players at all levels.
I've used Sue Gozanky's book as part of the drill library for our high school program for over 5 years, and I heartily recommend it to all coaches, at any level of play.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book About Beach Volleyball!
The Grand-daddy of beach volleyball gives excellent pointers on training, strategy, and skills in this book.He also sheds some light on the state of the AVP pro beach volleyball tour. For the latest on the AVP and inside, behind-the-scene stories, I'd also recommend "Order On The Court" by Tom Burke (2008) as a must-read!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lastima de fotografias.

3-0 out of 5 stars Geared for the masses...
Good book, but its only purpose is to appeal to "the masses." Most volleyball books are designed to help everyone; whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Let's face it, if you're trying to make a lot of money off a book...that's the best way to go. However, if you're already a good player, you're not going to benefit much from this book. You're much better off buying Mark Tanner's Smarter Volleyball. It actually talks about the "mental game," rather than the traditional pass, set, hit scenario that you see in most of these books. I've been Karch's biggest fan for most of my life, but to be honest...this book is a waste of time if you're actually wanting to get to a higher level of play. If you're just starting out, buy the book...but if you're looking for more indepth strategies, go with Mark Tanner's book or one of the "lesser known" authors...they're probably not in it for the "big" money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every volleyball player should buy this book!
This book has great photos and a balanced overall approach to beach volleyball. It's got all the basics covered and the stories that are peppered throughout the book make for interesting reading. I would probably have liked to hear more about the players and matches of the past, but I think Karch wanted this to be an instructional book rather than one for entertainment. Still I would have preferred more opinions and insights into the players and strategies. I hope that Karch does a second edition with the new AVP and it's rules.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners
This book is great for the beginner. It does not go in depth into strategy, reading hitters, positioning, etc...It does give GREAT tips on imporving your overall game, endurance, shot placement, et al.There is a bit of humor mixed into the fray, which adds the human touch.

When I bought this book i was a beginner. My serves were poor, sets average, kills average, blocks average, and passes were mediocre. After just a few weeks i had a great jump serve, monster kills, and incredible blocks.I love it.

If you are a beginner and want to improve quickly - this is for you.If you have been around a bit - you might find something useful in here but you probably already know this stuff. In depth strategy is lacking. ... Read more

This is a book that I looked forward to reading. After many years of trying, I finally got the jist of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations.
This is a book geared to the player. This will teach the average adult player about the game and expose them to some of the subtleties of the game.

The truely great thing about this book is the phenomenal illustrations.I believe each one is a charcoal drawing and they really illustrate what proper positioning should be.I used it to help my own game, such as it was, and it helped me with my coaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're at all serious about volleyball you need this book
Excellent drawings, crystal clear explanations. If you want a definitive reference for a variety of offensive and defensive schemes, and drawings that break down all the basic skills in detail, this is the book to buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your time and money
I agree with the last reviewer, this book is way out of date and not worth spending the time reading. And I didn't really like the writing style, either, it felt stilted and it was hard to read--didn't flow, if you know what I mean.If you want to really develop your skills, go for something by someone with real credentials who actually knows what they're talking about.

1-0 out of 5 stars out of date
this book is mostly out of date. There are a lot of good drills, but I would not recommend this book to anyone starting out in coaching. There are a lot of better books (and web pages) out there on each aspect of the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great primer for coaches and player alike.
When I first began thinking about coaching high school ball, Jeff Lucas's book was one of many I devoured. Although I'd played the game for years, I wanted to gain a wider perspective, and Jeff's book was very helpful.

The illustrations are excellent, and every skill involved in the game of volleyball is examined and explained in detail. I recommend this book for anyone looking to improve their skills, either as a player or a coach. ... Read more
