Bill Strickland is 'living the dream' that is part of the romance and myth that fascinates the rest of the world about Southern California. His book gives a rare insider's view of the insular world of Professional Beach Volleyball, as it follows the ups and downs of his second full season in the Main Draw of the AVP Tour.It is a world of hot sand, hot women and fierce competition. The top teams take home Gold Medals and up to $100,000 in prize money for a single tournament, while the rest sacrifice everything to chase their elusive dreams of beach immortality, all the while bottoming out their bank accounts.Things can get rough, but off the court the camaraderie this sport breeds is constantly on display, and there is no better demonstration of this than Inside the Players' Tent. This book is a very honest account of one player's experience as he claws his way through a full season on the AVP Tour. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a how to book for moms.
I have been a club volleyball coach for going on six years now, and a club director for almost three years.I have been answering the same questions from parents for years.Mostly about how club volleyball works and how their kids can get the most out of the experience. Now there is a book that can answer most of those questions in an intelligent manner. The book is not actually a how to guide but it is close enough.

Some of the stuff that I talk to my club team parents about, such as nutrition, preparing for the tournaments, how to mentally prepare kids for tryouts, how to deal with the stress of competition, the kind of equipment to buy, what to look for when shopping for a club and a coach, etc. are all in this book.

The authors also attempt to deal with the rules of the game.Although the book is brand new for 2000, it is also a tad out of date for this upcoming year. The libero rule and other rule changes being integrated into the USAV rules were not touched on.

In a way this book is somewhat minimalist in that it deals only with the basics, but that is more than enough for most parents or players.I would have like to have seen more on how to prepare kids for club recruiting, or the peer pressures that comes from the experience, and the competition for players from the different clubs. The book touches on some aspects of college recruiting, not really enough to prepare the parents for the onslaught, but they do mean well. The authors does a generally good job of differentiating between the different levels of competion, but I think they really need to emphasize the difference between a traveling team and a local team.

Another issue that is ignored is the level of coaching and how to identify good coaches versus bad coaches. The usual way is through the volleyball grapevine, but there are certain tell tale signs from how the clubs run their tryouts that will tell you whether this is a good or a bad club. Most of that is quibling because I love this book.

I love the fact that I now have a book to recommend to parents who have a million questions about club volleyball but have nowhere to go.This is a must read for parents who wants to get their kids involved in volleyball as well as those parents whose kids are transitioning to higher levels of club volleyball.

Now if only they could add a chapter about how valuable coaches are and how they really should be paid a lot more money, all my problems would be solved!!!:) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars People of all athletic abilities can play volleyball and will learn a lot from this book!
I'm sure you have and least had a glimpse at a couple of teams playing volleyball and would enjoy playing a game yourself, but you might be a bit worried you wouldn't know the rules or what is going on. It is a lot of fun if you've ever played.Perhaps even if you've played a casual game you may not know how many rules there are if you're going to play a "real" game.In this very thorough and exiting book you learn all there is to know about volleyball.Whether it is the first time or you have some experience you'll be in the know!

First of all, don't grab, hold or catch that ball.Players work at bouncing the ball over the net. When "two teams hitting the ball back-and-forth to each other is called a rally."That is when your team scores. The game is divided into three or fives sets. Each set is fifteen points. In this book you will learn about serving, side-out, international volleyball (they score differently), an attack line, the front court, the back court, the free zone, types of serves, volleying, a block, the spike, the offense, the defense, an ace, a fault a dump, an outside hit, antennae, tipping, rules, referees and beach volleyball. It's not really a complicated game at all and people of all athletic abilities can have a lot of fun playing.

I enjoyed reading this book and, as a very casual volleyball player, was unaware of some of the rules. For example, most casual teams will bounce that ball around until it hits the ground.I learned that "a team can only touch the ball three times before hitting it back to the opposition."Imagine that! There are great action photographs, informative sidebars, a glossary and an index.Everything you wanted to know about volleyball, casual or otherwise, is in this book.Have fun. . .summer is on its way! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic look into the world of Beach Volleyball & it's history
My wife and I are avid Pro Beach volleyball fans, dating back to 2005 after volunteering at our first AVP event in Cincinnati.Since that time we have had the privilege to work at tournaments around the US and have fallen in love with the sport. During a recent tournament back in Cinci, we had the good fortune of meeting the author, Tom Burke. As we flew back home to San Diego, I was totally engrossed in his book "Order on the Court". I'm not sure which part I enjoyed most, it was excellent from start to finish. The sport's history was chronicled back to the very beginning and his in-depth knowledge and analysis was highly illuminating from the early days up to 2008 when the book was released.

As the AVP recently announced it was closing it's doors, I kept hearing the old saying about history repeating itself. This is certainly the case when it comes to the AVP and current state of pro-beach volleyball in the US. Hopefully some of the excellent points made by Tom will be given some serious thought and consideration by the future leaders of sport and it will once again rise to prominance. This book is a great read not only for us rabid fans, but also newbies to the sport interested to learn more and those hopeful it will get back on track and transform into something bigger and better for the players and fans alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Olympic Fan
I am a casual fan of Olympic Beach Volleyball, who has attended two Women's Olympic Finals, and one AVP event. As an avid all around sports fan, I found that Order on the Court provided context and perspective by chronicling the up and down history of the USA's AVP, which is the tour that attempts to market ths sport as a professional event for the US sports fan consumer.Additionally, as Tom Burke juxtaposes the seemingly no-brainer appeal of the sport versus the business of running a tour one is able to understand the issues that cause the tour to struggle year in and year out with sponsors and fans.I learned a great deal about the inner-workings of the AVP from reading this book, and I walked away with a greater respect for the athletes who pursue their athletic dreams via beach volleyball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Book! Inside Look at the Life & Times of Pro Beach Volleyball

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not how you play volleyball
As a professional educator and long time volleyball coach and instructor, I am deeply disturbed by the new ruminations being proposed by Poole and his
supporters. From where the dissenters come I don't know, but their divisive machinations are destroying the game and misleading many of the more inexperienced volleyball players into thinking that volleyball is archaic, dated, and ripe for a philosophical overhaul. Well, it isn't. These volleyballistas and their propogana programs need to be curtailed at the base, there is no method. There is no sports instruction system. Volleyball is chaos, it is a microcosm of the unpredictablem forces of the universe that created and will destroy our fragile world. Therein lies the beauty of the game, to play is to reinact this drama of the heavenly bodies and gases and divine indifference. Volleyball is life and death intertwined with immutable inevitabilty, and no hubristic system will ever shelter the volleyball player from his predetermined glory and humiliation.Surprisingly however, Poole gives a very good summary of beach volleyball and lists some very popular spots to get in on a pickup game. ...
