Excerpt: Rex Ellingwood Beach (September 1, 1877 December 7, 1949) was an American novelist, playwright, and Olympic water polo player. Rex Beach was born in Atwood, Michigan to a prominent family and pursued a career as a lawyer before being drawn to Alaska at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush. After five years of unsuccessful prospecting, he turned to writing. His first novel, The Spoilers, was based on a true story of corrupt government officials stealing gold mines from prospectors, which he witnessed while he was prospecting in Nome, Alaska. The Spoilers became one of the best selling novels of 1906. His adventure novels were immensely popular throughout the early 1900s. Beach was lionized as the "Victor Hugo of the North," but others found his novels formulaic and predictable. Critics described them as cut from the "he-man school" of literature: stories of "strong hairy men doing strong hairy deeds." Alaska historian Stephen Haycox has said many of Beach's works are "mercifully forgotten today." One such potboiler, The Silver Horde (1909), is set in Kalvik, a fictionalized community in Bristol Bay, Alaska, and tells the story of a down on his luck gold miner who discovers a greater wealth in Alaska's run of salmon (silver horde) and decides to open a cannery. To accomplish this he must overcome the relentless opposition of the "salmon trust," a fictionalized Alaska Packers' Association, which undercuts his financing, sabotages his equipment, incites a longshoremen's riot and bribes his fishermen to quit. The story line includes a love interest as the protagonist is forced to choose between h...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3090534 ... Read more

Excerpt: The DFB-Pokal 197778 was the 35 season of the competition. It began on 29 July 1977 and ended on 15 April 1978. 128 teams competed in the tournament of seven rounds. In the final FC Köln defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf 20, thus defending their title from the last season. The tournament consisted of seven single elimination rounds. In case a game ended with a draw 30 minutes of extra time were played. If the score was still level the game was replayed with 30 minutes of extra time in case of another draw. If still no winner could be determined, a penalty shooutout decided which team advanced to the next round. For the first time the final was not to be replayed in case of a draw after 120 minutes. In that case a penalty shootout would decide the winner of the DFB-Pokal. Eggenstein objected formally against the result. A DFB-jury annulled the game and decided to hold a replay after Horner TV had already played their second round match against 1860 Munich. As Eggenstein won the replay the match Munich vs. Horner TV was also annulled and Munich had to play against Eggenstein. Horner TV's first round match was annulled and replayed. As Horner TV lost the replay against Eggenstein, Eggenstein advanced to the second round and played against Munich. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=19686734 ... Read more

Estiarte converted a penalty 42 seconds from full time to put Spain ahead, but nine seconds later Italy equalised and went on to win 9-8 in extra time. Four years later, he was part of the team that made of for this painful loss by winning gold in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, defeating Croatia 7-5 in the final. The 1996 tournament was the only one of his six Olympics when Estiarte was not the tournament's top scorer He won the World Championship at Perth 1998 after finishing in second place at Perth 1991 and Rome 1994. Estiarte is the second Spaniard to compete at six Olympic Games, after equestrian Luis Álvarez de Cervera. As of 2010, no other Spaniards have competed in six Olympics. Estiarte is the first water polo player to compete at six Olympic Games. Between 1936 and 1946, Nakache won the French 100-Meter Freestyle 6 times, the 200-Meter Freestyle 4times, the 200-Meter Breaststroke 4 times, and an assortment of other French swimming titles, many of them setting national records. Nakache was a member of Frances Olympic Swimming Teams of 1936 and 1948. Nakache competed for France at the 1936 Berlin Olympics in the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay. In the preliminaries, the French team won its heat with Nakache swimming the second leg. They advanced to the finals and finished 4th, just missing a medal. In 1941, Nakache set the World 200-Meter Breaststroke record (2:36.8) in Marseilles and was one-third of the French 3 x 100 relay team that established a World record in August 1946 (3:19.9) at Toulouse. Only one month later, they lowered their relay mark to 3:12.3 in Marseilles. Being Jewish, his aquatic career was interrupted and put on hold during the German occupation of France during World War II. He was put in the Auschwitz work camp, where he risked his life only to swim laps within the reservoir used for storing water for use in case of fires. When he got out of Auschwitz, Nakache weighed a mere 48kg. Following his defeat of the German champion, Jochen Balke, en route to his World Breaststroke record in 1941, and soon after setting another European swimming record, a ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=10607699 ... Read more

The playing team consists of six field players and one goalkeeper. The winner of the game is the team that scores the most goals. Gameplay involves swimming, players passing the ball while being defended by opponents, and scoring by throwing into a net defended by a goalie. Water polo, therefore, has strong similarities to the land-based game of team handball. The frequency of 'man-up' (or 'power play') situations also draws comparisons with ice hockey. Note: Rules below reflect the latest FINA Water Polo Rules 2005-2009.Seven players from each team (six field players and a goalkeeper) are allowed in the playing area of the pool during game play. Visiting team field players wear numbered and usually blue caps, and home team field players wear usually white caps (though any other contrasting colors are now allowed); both goalies wear red caps, numbered "1". Both teams may substitute players while the ball is in their possession. During game play, players enter and exit in the corner of the pool, or in front of their bench; when play is stopped, they may enter or exit anywhere. The game is divided into four periods; the length depends on the level of play: The game clock is stopped when the ball is not 'in play' (between a foul being committed and the free throw being taken, and between a goal being scored and the restart). As a result, the average quarter lasts around 12 minutes 'real time'. A team may not have possession of the ball for longer than 30 seconds without shooting for the goal unless an opponent commits an ejection foul. After 30 seconds, possession passes to the other team. However, if a team shoots the ball within the allotted time, and regains...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=47426 ... Read more
