Product Description
With this book in hand, boaters can cruise down the Jersey Shore––from New York Harbor to Delaware Bay––in the good company of Captain Donald Launer.

Captain Launer brings many years of experience as a skipper of small boats to this engaging nautical and historical guide to New Jersey’s tidal waters. Cruise with him from the New Jersey/New York state line near the mouth of the Hudson River, past Raritan Bay and Sandy Hook, and into the Manasquan Inlet. From there, he gives you a choice of voyages: the inside route through the Intracoastal Waterway to Toms River, Barnegat Bay, Atlantic City, and Cape May, or taking the offshore passage. Then you explore the Delaware Bay and its tributaries and cruise up the Delaware River to Trenton.

This revised edition contains updated information about onshore facilities, marinas, restaurants, stores, sites of interest, docking fees, bridge heights, maritime service stations, weather, navigation, and safety, as well as post–September 11 regulations in the waters around New York City. The book also includes a wealth of photographs and sea charts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable appetizer to a Jersey cruise
Captain Launer is an articulate, informative, and entertaining guide. His information is current and detailed. I have enjoyed reading this book straight through from the Introduction. I look forward to extending my nextBaltimore-to-Cape May cruise up the ICW to Atlantic City with Captain Launer's guide at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars well presented; accurate; organized;useful
Captain Donald Launer is one of the more knowlegeable sailors along the New Jersey shore. He lives there and is devoted to marine arts and sciences as they effect boaters.

His book is scrupulously accurate, unusuallyreadable, and more than interesting for sailor, motorboater or just aninterested reader.

Although the book is sequential in form, in thatit presents a travalogue from New Jersey's dramatic Palisades to ratherscruffy Trenton Falls, it is equally useful as a reference book; theorganiztion is outstanding.

Captain Launer has also kindly provideda fairly complete reference section.

This is a "must book"for any skipper who wishes to cruise New Jersey Waters. A great gift forany Garden State boater.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get off the beaten track - read this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars I shoulda just bought a map
A more appropriate title should have been Still Waters...... as the author only deals with lakes and ponds, and not that many of them. More than just for the beginners this book is for the completely dumb that can't read a map.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it!
I bought Kathy Kenley's book as a novice paddler who needed guidance to explore the lakes of southern New Jersey. It has been everything I hoped it would be.The descriptions are right on, and the directions to access points are perfect. While I cannot personally speak for the accuracy of information north of Burlington County, I have personally used it for information on about half the listed lakes in the south, and have yet to be misdirected in any way.I expect it is equally valid and valuable up north. This is a "must have" for anyone wishing to enjoy the pleasures of canoing or kayaking on lakes and bays in the Garden State.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive NJ Flatwater Guide
Although the descriptions of the listings are somewhat short and the b&w photographs for each site don't do them justice, this is a fairly comprehensive listing of NJ flatwater sites. The guide also includes some nice smaller lakes.

The guidebook is great in providing paddlers with all they need to get to each site and see for themselves the beauty that NJ offers to those who kayak and canoe.

Grab this book and your paddle and get on the water!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and helpful
The authors of this book must be paddlers because they have included information paddlers really need, (access points, boat traffic, changing conditions, etc...).

I want to explore these waters this summer and feel that this guide is extensive enough for me to know what to do, how to pack and what to watch for when I go.

This resource guide makes trips to these lakes easier for paddlers ,like me, that do not live in the immediate area of these waters.

Since the start of the 20th century, Detroit has been the hub of the motorized world. It was only natural that the powerful motors built in DetroitÂ’s huge factories eventually found their way into high-speed boats and that organized racing soon followed. Starting in 1916, Detroit became the center of powerboat racing. Names like Gar Wood, Chris Smith, and Horace Dodge dominated the sports pages of the 1920s and 1930s. Following World War II, racing in Detroit entered its golden era. Led by local businessmen like Jack Schafer, Joe Schoenith, and George Simon, hydroplane racing captured the heart of the community in a way that has never been equaled. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
When I found out that my PADI Ice Diving Specialty Course did not provide
any reference material, I decided to search the web for a book on ice
diving. After an exhausted search, I came across this book and bought it.
Being well informed before taking a course gives you a definite edge and the confidence to be able to ask intelligent questions about the material being taught. This book gives you that edge as well as the desirable knowledge every diver wants when he or she begins a new diving activity. The book is filled with great color photos and illustrations, and is packed with first-rate information. Anyone taking an Ice Diving Course should read this book. For the price, it's worth the money. Plus, it's nice to have a good reference book to refer to at a later date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good info in this book
Bought this book as an additional source of info prior to doing my PADI Ice Diving Course.I've found instructors teach what they know which isn't always what is safest so I wanted to make sure when I made decisions they were informed ones. This book helped me ask some questions regarding my own safety I would never have thought about had I not read it.Anyone considering taking an Ice Diving course should buy this book and read it prior to taking the course.Remember singnals are different depending who your instructor is but as long as everyone is using the same ones it's OK.This book is definately worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide for Europe
Although there are other guides in different languages and several online resources, this guide provides English-speaking whitewater paddlers with the critical information they need to find the classics of the North Alps region.

The book features 60 classic runs for kayakers and rafters in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Northeast Italy. These are separated by region as the Upper Rhine Valley, Engadine, Landeck, Lech Valley, Haiming, Upper Bavaria, Kitzbuehel Alps, and Val di Sole. In addition to the main river descriptions, Knowles and Bandtock include brief descriptions of "lesser classics" and "other runs" which round out the paddling possibilities for those spending more time in a particular region.

The river descriptions provide a good overall summary of the character of each run, but the book is more than that and serves as a travel guide to whitewater paddlers with notes on each country and region targeted towards those planning a whitewater vacation. There are suggested itineraries as well as stories and historical background that round out the guide and make it much more than just a collection of river descriptions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man
Robert McCloskey's Caldecott Medal winner is a classic.I read Burt Dow to our children and extended daycare family a countless number of times. The pictures and onomatopoeic language brings this action-packed, humorous narrative to life. Our son, a brand new father, smiled when he received this copy for Father's Day.I highly recommend this memory making adventure. If you have any doubts, check out Burt Dow at your local library before purchasing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Burt Dow, McCloskey Masterpiece
When Robert McCloskey took pen in hand to write Burt Dow he was at the top of his game and a gifted student of art and literature. His story of a Maine fisherman who goes out to sea in a leaky boat with an old one lung engine and catches a whale is the start. He puts a bandaid on the whales tail just before an oncoming storm at sea causes him to take refuge inside the grateful whale. Does that remind you of anything? Jonah? Androcles? Ahab? the African Queen? The story that delights children does appear to be a parody of the literature of the 40's and 50's when many rewritings of classic stories appeared. But that is not all. Oh No! That is not all. Take a look at the pictures in McCloskey's most colorful picture book. Who do you see? Winslow Homer? Jackson Pollock? Edward Hopped? Franz Marc? Writing as a children's librarian, I can think of few children's books with more intellectual adult entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good to Learn Boat Terms
It's not a simple picture book wih short sentences, this one's longer than most picture books. It's nice to learn boating terms. It's an interesting book but not cute. (Maybe it's more of a book for little boys who like adventure.)

If you like cute, there's Wings: A Tale of Two Chickens

5-0 out of 5 stars a winner - loved it thirty years ago, love it still!
when i was a kid my grandparents lived next door to robert mccloskey, and he gave me a copy of this book.i fell in love with this book then, and still love it.it's light-hearted, creative, tension-building - and like all of his books, wonderfully illustrated.

mccloskey takes us to a time and place that mixes america from the 40s or 50s with the fanciful land of his imagination - a great combo!

burt dow is an gentle old sea salt, and his seagull, the whales, and his adventure spun magic in my memory!

i hope all kids get a chance to read this story!

5-0 out of 5 stars I knew Burt Dow!

Product Description
In this wise and thrilling book, Criag Lambert turns rowing--personal discipline, modern Olympic sport, grand collegiate tradition--into a metaphor for a vigorous and satisfying life.Amazon.com Review
Some sports--the solitary ones, in particular--are simply moreprone to mysticism and mystery than others. Golf, certainly. Long-distance running, of course. Fishing. Climbing. Eachhas a literature that confronts the essence of its lonely pursuit andexplores the way the solitude and self-discipline these sports demandgrow the spirit and fill the competitor. Lambert's graceful reflectionon rowing is a lovely addition to the genre, part memoir, partnarrative, part celebration of a relatively arcane endeavor, andutterly provocative. The superficial journey here is over water; thereal one is internal. "Like Einstein," he writes, "we wish to knowGod's thoughts. We shall attempt to pry them loose with an oar. Theraw elements of the sport are our teacher: the wind and the water, theboat and its oars, our own bodies and minds." Given those elements,it's no surprise that the education is a profound one. The surprise ishow accessible and appealing it turns out to be. --JeffSilverman ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What does Carlos Casteneda have to do with Rowing?
Lambert is well informed about the people and places of the New England rowing scene through the 60's 70's and 80's. These were the years that Harvard's Coach Harry Parker transformed the sport, producing teams of highly consistent, superb performance. CRASH-B, the ergonometer competition was started during these years. And the Craftsbury Common Sculling Center trained thousands of people, who otherwise would not have rowed. There is much here about learning and practicing the sport as an adult. Where the book wanders from its purpose is in the attempt at mysticism. We are treated to quips about zen buddhism, tai chi, and the conclusion references the central metaphor from Carlos Casteneda's fictional shaman "Don Juan".These are presented as if they were received wisdom.

There is unquestionably something elegant and poetic about the sport, captured since the 19th century in the paintings of Thomas Eakins and observed by most anyone who has watched crews, doubles and single sculls emerging from the morning mists of the Charles River. To dress this up with vague references to eastern religion, and the alleged words of an imaginary Yahqui shaman undermines Lamberts serious purpose. This said, the book offers direct observation of many of the critical years of the recent development of the sport in New England, and is worth reading if only for that reason. It is a sport with much quiet beauty and few have written, not just about the method of rowing, but the context of the community of rowers. The silent company of these people is one of the principle reasons to row. And this Lambert captures nicely.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sculler and a scholar and so much more
Every so often I find a book that actually opens my eyes.Craig Lambert's "Mind Over Water" is one of those books. When I was first given it, I wondered what a memoir about rowing would have to say to me when the closest I'd ever gotten to rowing was riding in a glass-bottomed boat one summer in childhood.Within the first three pages, I understood. And I was hooked. It's hard to call a meditative memoir a page-turner, but this one is.I hated putting the book down, so hungry was I for Lambert's next graceful thought, his next provocative insight, his next flash of wicked humor.Yes, this little gem of a book is about the fascinating world of rowing and rowers, it's about feats -- both large and small -- of heroic and brilliant athleticism; but it's really about so much more. It's about the stuff that makes us alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide to life.
This is a beautiful piece of work that brings life down to earth (water).
And in this life, everyone wins. Everytime.

2-0 out of 5 stars LAME!
Over the top and over writen! I couldn't read more than half of it. I'll never get those hours back!
I know I never want him in my boat, if he talks the way he writes!

1-0 out of 5 stars not for athlete
This will be a short review. To use an example visit the sample extract that is offered on this web site. The author mentions a double head. He builds it up as something mythic and impossible. This is a joke. Six miles is nothing. Just nothing. Its a warm up for some. Sports writing is not easy but effort should be made to represent the true hardships of a sport, because if you fake it you also fake the joy that can be derived from the sport. Rowing is tough and you learn a lot about yourself from it but limiting it to oh its really cold in the morning and the hagiographies of US olympians is boring and misguided.I suggest Lambert visit a few more boat clubs. ... My 2nd grader started reading these books, and got her 3-year-old sister hooked on them, too. We read them together and they both love this series. We read them over and over.
