Product Description
Amy Steadman was destined to become one of the great women's soccer players of her generation. "The best of the best," Parade magazine called her as she left high school and headed off to the University of North Carolina. Instead, by age twenty, Amy had undergone five surgeries on her right knee. She had to give up the sport she loved. She walked with a stiff gait, like an elderly woman, and found it painful to get out of bed in the morning.

Warrior Girls exposes the downside of the women's sports revolution that has evolved since Title IX: an injury epidemic that is easily ignored because we worry that it will threaten our daughters' hard-won opportunities on the field. From teenage girls playing local soccer, basketball, lacrosse, volleyball, and other sports to women competing at the elite level, female athletes are suffering serious injuries at alarming rates.

The numbers are frightening and irrefutable. Young female athletes tear their ACLs, the stabilizing ligament in the knee, at rates as high as eight times greater than their male counterparts. Women's collegiate soccer players suffer concussions at the same rate as college football players. From head to toe, female athletes suffer higher rates of injury, and many of them play through constant pain.

Michael Sokolove gives us the most up-to-date research on girls and sports injuries. He takes us into the homes and hearts of female athletes, into operating theaters where orthopedic surgeons reconstruct shredded knees, and onto the practice field of famed University of North Carolina soccer coach Anson Dorrance.

Exhaustively researched and strongly argued, Warrior Girls is an urgent wake-up call for parents and coaches. Sokolove connects the culture of youth sports -- the demands for girls to specialize in a single sport by age ten or younger, and to play it year-round -- directly to the injury epidemic. Devoted to the ideal of team, and deeply bonded with teammates, these tough girls don't want to leave the field even when confronted with serious injury and chronic pain.

Warrior Girls shows how girls can train better and smarter to decrease their risks. It makes clear that parents must come together and demand changes to a sports culture that manufactures injuries. Well-documented, opinionated, and controversial, Warrior Girls shows that all girls can safeguard themselves on the field without sacrificing their hard-won right to be there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars warrior girls
This is a must read for every parent whose daughter in into sports especially high impact ones like soccer.I wish this book had been out when my first daughter started soccer 18 yrs. ago, I would have had a way different mentality.Unfortunetly I have read this after the ACL blowout. It is a great read and a must have in every parents library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book that ALL parents should read
This book brought my attention to several issues in kids' sports that are really important. While it is focused on girls' sports, there are many issues that transfer to boys' athletics. We are so methodical about so many aspects of our children's lives (academics, music, art), it is absolutely time that we start making conscious decisions about the healthy pursuit of sports as well. After reading this book and passing it to several other parents, I feel empowered!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Job!!
I originally purchased this book after reading a blog exchange between the Author and a Senior person at the Tucker Institute at the University of Minnesota in which I felt that Tucker was very dismissive of Sokolove's work in general and his conclusions in particular. That didn't make sense to me which I why I read the book.

From my perspective Sokolove was very "Title IX" friendly in his approach to his research. In spite of the startling data presented, here we are in 2010 and I can't see that it has been effectively validated or dealt with by the substantial government and university funded women's sports establishment. It appears to me that those in power are concerned that if this information became commonly known there would be a backlash against Title IX.Seems they have some explaining to do.

It's one thing to expand sports participation opportunities for girls via Title IX, but frankly if an issue this basic has not been effectively dealt with over the past three decades it makes one wonder if the right people are in charge from a directional standpoint.

Torn ACLs and concussions are very serious injuries at any age and the earlier in life they occur the higher the potential for negative quality of life issues for these women down the road.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fathers shoud read this
As the father of a professional female athelete i was well aware of the rash of serious injuries they have endured. This is a must read for the parents of any serious female athelete. The authors document the problem and give some advice on how to protect young girls from serious injury. its a little scary to read but well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have a daughter, read this book
This book gives power and knowledge back to the parents (not the coaches or kids). It is a scary account of the long term effects of ACL injuries.I will make my daughter read it as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars kayaking ,yes
good book to locate kayak spots-inexpensive source book if you live in Hudson Valley, NY

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great book that that provides you with the essential info to explore kayaking sites in the Mid-Hudson region (Westchester/Rockland to Columbia/Greene). Provides maps, directions to put-in and take-out spots and descriptions of the water trail. Puts in one book info that is hard to track down. So I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great guide to the Hudson's best places
I've lived in the Hudson Valley for ten years, but when I bought my kayaks it felt as if I'd moved to an entirely new place! Exploring the waterways close to home has been enriching for me and for my children. We're still discovering the wonders. Aber has personally explored these places, and she's put together a thoughtful, detailed, well-researched book. I refer to it often. You can tell she loves kayaking, and her enthusiasm is infectious!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!All in one book.
In Shari Aber's guide you discover a personal odyssey combined with extraordinarily complete information on kayaking on the rivers, ponds, and lakes in this region of New YOrk.This book is formatted to allow you to plan your trip from your easy chair.Every area in six counties is mapped for you. Each entry includes route, mileage, difficulty level(from easy to challenging), setting, hazards, remarks and a narrative of the author's kayak journey in the specic spot.
She also includes types of kayaks, necessary supplies, and helpful web sites. The appendices expand your knowledge of local events and tours and include a list of outfitters. Land directions get you right to the easiest spot for your excursion to begin.
Each entry closes with "The Paddle", the author's description
of her voyage on the waters indicated. Her personal tales include local history and her unique observations on the water and natural environs.Ms. Aber's interest in the birds, especially the herons, hawks, and eagles
in each district is evident.
Photographs of the bodies of water and their inhabitants help in the trip planning, for we all know we want to go where we just might see otters and muskrats and the baby deer hiding in the weeds at the water's edge.
This is not just a guide to where and how; it is a call to adventure and the pleasures of becoming part of "the harmony of seemingly disparate forces." ... Read more

Customer Reviews (1)

1-0 out of 5 stars Pointless. Useless.
This book has no point to it, no structure and no logical coherence whatsoever. It jumps from chapter to chapter without ever making a concise point, amounting to little more than a random collection of anecdotes and trivia about a few high profile races. At some points the book assumes the reader is an expert, then suddenly attempts to appeal to beginners - but it is useless for the beginner and won't teach anything to the expert. All the examples seem to be taken straight from the "Challenge" races, which is a awfully limited source of data. What percentage of blue water cruises are done with large crews on large steel yachts against the wind? Be honest and get a Chay Bligh book about the challenge!

This title is misleading; there's nothing useful in it to prepare for extended cruising.

If you plan to do extended cruising avoid this useless book.

Product Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment in the United Kingdom face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment to the United Kingdom? How important is the United Kingdom compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment vary from one country of origin to another in the United Kingdom? On the supply side, the United Kingdom also exports water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment. Which countries receive the most exports from the United Kingdom? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment in the United Kingdom. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment for those countries serving the United Kingdom via exports, or supplying from the United Kingdom via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where the United Kingdom fits into the world market for imported and exported water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide ... Read more

The media extols the health benefits of good nutrition and physical activity. Since exercise and sport is becoming a bigger concern to the general public and not just elite athletes, the interest in research in this field is growing. Macroelements, Water and Electrolytes in Sport Nutritionaddresses the relationship of macroelement needs and interactions to sports and exercise. Research indicates that work capacity and other measures of physical performance are influenced by the intake of water as well as several of the macroelements, including electrolytes. This book examines the convincing, and the not so convincing, evidence about the connection between exercise and sports activities and the nutrient status of individuals.Written by individuals from various academic disciplines, the book is a comprehensive, indispensable resource for scientists and practitioners with an interest in sports nutrition. It provides a review of topics related to water, macroelements, and exercise as well as identifies gaps in our knowledge, encouraging researchers to build upon the existing knowledge and advance our understanding of sport nutrition. ...
