This updated edition of Weight Training for Dummies includes a few newchapters: "Yoga and Pilates" and "Improving Your Balance and Coordination," bothin the "Beyond the Barbell" section; "Advanced Weight Training Exercises"; and afew snippets of new material (such as the addition of "Don't dress like a pornstar" in the "Weight Training Etiquette" chapter). Otherwise, it's pretty muchthe same book. If you own the first edition, there's probably no need to buy theupdated version. But if you don't own the first edition of this handy and cheeryguide already, and weight training is not yet a part of your fitness program, the second edition of Weight Training for Dummies will teach you exactlywhat to do and how to do it. --Joan PriceBook Description

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I've been doing a lot of weight trainging since I retired and have done a lot of research but this puts is all in a nutshell.
Would reccommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent beginning
I see that some reviewers crab about this book not being advanced enough or not focused enough in some area or topic.Hey, it's a Dummies book, which I generally consider when entering an area I know little about. This book I bought years ago, and I've found it useful at different points at different times and for different reasons. At first, I appreciated how it broke down the exercising of different muscle groups.Later, when I was considering buying a home gym, I appreciated the broad view of weight options (free weights, power racks, fixed motion gyms, rubber bands, inflatable balls, etc.).This seems to me an exemplary introductory book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book could be alot better
This book could be alot better. Should have more photos and more talk more visual displays.

My husband has motivation to workout everyday and requested a book for Christmas that would help him get faster running and do the right kind of weights before a race and when he is not in the race mode and this book was an answer to his prayers because it has all the right formulas for what he was looking for.EXCELLENT BOOK!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Well Illustrated
The drawings in this book are certainly some of the best I've seen in this category.

In terms of content, this book is divided into various body parts namely arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs, buttocks and abdomen. There are more than 10 exercises under each section. For each body part, a series of exercises highlighting the muscles involved are presented. All active muscles are highlighted and the passive ones are labelled as well. Note accompany the drawings to provide instructions on how each exercise should be performed.

Both male and female bodies are featured. Exercises featured include those using free weights and machines. After reading this book, anyone interested in strength training (not necessarily serious bodybuilding) should be able to choose a few exercises that will suit his/her needs. No need for expensive gym equipment or memberships. The book shows us that some highly effective exercises can be performed at home or the children's playground.

Once again, the drawings are simply awesome. A great reference book for anyone who is intrested in strength training.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well explained muscle anatomy!
This is an excelent book to have in mind and not only on your book shelf,i strongly recommend it for those who really intersted in bodybuilding. But the only thing that i didn't enjoy is that it doesnt tell you the muscle that does most of the work for an excercise. For instance in bench press, it highlights all the chest muscle and doesnt specify the middle one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Illustrated Strength Training Guide
This is one of the best weight training guides that I've found. The art illustrations are beautiful and very educational and it is an excellent technique guide as well.I refer to it several times a week for tips and ideas about my workouts. There is a significant amount of detailed information that will help weight lifters and fitness buffs no matter their skill or fitness goals.I highly recommend it for technique, variety and injury avoidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
A must have for body builders or for someone who is looking to learn more about the anatomy of muscle building and proper exercice.I use this book as a regular reference while working out to help me remain focused on the muscles i am working out.And helps to depict what muscles i am trying to work.EXCELLENT! 10*'s

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength Training Anatomy
Sometimes, I get frustrated when exercising. I know that a little strength training is supposed to be good for my bones while promoting weight loss. Unfortunately, I usually only have half a clue about what I'm doing. Thus, much of my workout is spent worrying whether I'm doing the movements correctly, hoping I don't hurt myself, and wishing I had a personal trainer to tell me what to do.

Strength Training Anatomy is definitely a better alternative. This book includes 15 different strength training exercises (free weights and resistance), focusing on the arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs, and buttocks. The proper range of motion is illustrated for each exercise (including variations) with the particular muscle groups highlighted in full colour. Both male and female body types are shown. The text also includes special features about common injuries: what causes these problems and how to avoid them.

Now, when working out, I am far more confident. I know which muscle groups are supposed to be in motion. I know how to avoid potential injury dangers. I even have an understanding of how to adapt these exercises to best suit my body form and abilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginner's Guide
This book is an invaluable resource for those just getting into cycling. It also makes a great reference tool for the advanced cyclist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
This book really changed my cycling performance, it's great for cyclists and also for everybody else.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very generic.....
This book offers no real insight other then the standard thoughts like cyclists should do high repetitions with low weight so as not to build bulky muscles.Other standard thoughts include varying your workout over time to constantly stress your muscles so they don't become too accustomed to one particular workout routine. The author references his personal training program available via his website one too many times for my taste. When reading the book you get the feeling that the "cycling" aspect of the book seems more the result of a search and replace operation in a word processor versus a book really geared towards cyclists.

If you haven't spent much time in a gym lifting weights then this book might be more valuable then I found it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect guide for strength training for cyclists
This book is very well laid out.It is an excellent guide for the beginner and a nice, well-organized reference for the advanced cyclist.Every part of the book is laid out in a straightforward manner and the information is right on in every respect.Whole training plans are sampled for the season, and easy-to-use charts are used to track your progress.

As a long-time cyclist and coach, the reviews that say this book is inferior are just plain wrong.Reading the book doesn't make you fitter. You have to practice what is taught in here.Additionally, the readers who pan it seem to have weight training backgrounds which likely pre-disposes them to their set ways of doing things in the gym.Bodybuilding techniques aren't cycling-specific.

Arguably this is the best book for that area of cycling that can improve your cycling the most, strength training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me a climber!
I bought this book over a year ago, and followed the program as laid out by the authors. All I can say is WOW!I am now hammering guys on climbs that used to leave me in the dust.

I referred a friend to this site and was not happy to see the very negative review written by O'Toole. He and the other "bodybuilder" guy who panned the book claim to have all of this knowledge of weight training, so why did they buy the book?A bodybuilder may know his way around the gym, but I am betting that he has no idea how to write up an annual periodized training program specifically for cycling. If he did, then once again, why did he buy the book?Just to criticize it?

This is a book to inform cyclists on how to use weight training to improve their riding, and it does this perfectly. It tells you what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.I strongly suggest it to anyone who wants to get stronger in the saddle! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, very basic start to free wieghts
So I am currently in the middle of the twelve week program outlined in this book, and sticking to it.
This is a really good book if you are interested in starting a mostly free weight program that's basic. This would appeal if - You are just getting started with a gym membership and don't want to spend money on a personal trainer, you are in shape cardio wise but want to diversify, or you are stuck in a rut with weight machines and want to break out.The author includes some basic tips on technique. There are nice logs to chart your progress. That's all.So far, there is no nutrition advice, so if you want that, look elsewhere. This is also a pretty basic plan to start, it builds stepwise, so if you are anything but a beginner, look elsewhere, this book will only frustrate you.For me, I have been impressed enough that I will get volume 2 soon...

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right for Me
I have been going to the gym for more than 3 years now running on a treadmill and once in a great while lifting a few weights when the gym was very empty. I honestly did understand the basic lifts prior to joining the gym but I really didn't have a total easy to follow program. I'd buy training magazines but I always was left with was this for beginners or someone who has lifted for years. This book is great for beginners or those who are unsure as to where to start. Great book, I'm so glad I bought it. I have been using it for 7 weeks now and actually have seen results; I plan on buying his second book once I have finished this one. I do agree with some of the others, this book isn't for someone who has lifted for years with results, nor does he suggest what to do aerobically but again this is weight training workouts that work not running for beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Workout Book I've gotten...simple and effective...
This book makes weight training really simple since he has all the workouts planned out so you don't have to do any work in putting together exercises.I also bought the Weight Training Bible for Women and Losing to Win, but I couldn't get myself to use those because they were too complicated for me and weren't laid out in a simple enough format like this book. This book is very compact so that I can carry it to the gym with me to workout and not have to copy down the workouts like I would have to do with the other books.

After about 3 months, I lost 6 pounds, which is a huge difference on my petite 5'1" frame.I hardly did any cardio while I was on the program because I hate cardio, but still got the results I wanted. I should note that I was 112 before the program and 106 pounds after, so I didn't have a lot of fat to lose. People with a lot of fat to lose would probably lose more weight because the less you have to lose, the harder it is to lose weight, so in this light, I think the program was very effective.

My sisters and friends all noticed the huge difference in my physique within months of doing this program and they all asked me what I did. I sure told everybody about this book. It doesn't have any fancy variations or anything, but still effective and very simple to follow.

I stopped working out for a year, and have only gained back 3 pounds. To me, this is a good deal: it takes about 3 months to lose 6 pounds, but 1 year to gain back 3. No complaints here :P

Thank you, James Orvis, for creating this foolproof book for weight training novices! I am on the Volume II workout and will review that one when I finish!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly workouts that work
I had this book before and after recovering from an injory, I decided to purchase the set of the books to get boack to working out safely and sanely. These books are like having a trainer without the outrageous cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep It Simple
I'll admit that when this book arrived, I was initially disappointed. It seemed very basic and hardly the super-duper-kalamanuper weight lifting book all the reviews made me expect.I ain't no fitness god, but I've lifted weights over the years, and so I figured it was too basic for me.Since I don't like to waste money, I thought I'd just do the routines. What the heck, right?

Well, six weeks in, and I am SOLD on this program.I'm seeing gains like I never saw before, and the exercises are laid out in logical order with great, clear expectations. What I initially mistook as being too basic is really just clarity and simplicity.

I do wish there was a little information on nutrition, but only because Mr. Orvis is so dead on with all his other info. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was recommended this book from a friend of mine who is also a soccer nut like myself.I found that this book clearly outlines how the individual player can exponentially increase their level of effectiveness on the pitch.Besides improving my general performance on the field by increasing my level of stamina, strength, and flexibility, I found that this book serves as a very good starting points for players of all abilities and ages.

This book provides advice narrowly tailored towards soccer players.Where other books fail to provide advice about how one can prevent injures and make training fun, this book undoubtedly succeeds!!!Overall, a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Training Aid
Its been a long time that I've found a book to be as functional as this one.It outlines soccer specific programs that are easy to follow and even easier to understand. My efficiency in the weightroom has increased ten fold, and I am now faster and more powerful than ever before. Also, I am quicker and able to make sharper cuts on the field and can jump higher now to reach up for difficult headers. All in all, this is a great book that I would recommend to anyone interested in enhancing their soccer playing performance. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars OK Book
Not as good as the Dummies series which has better written and illustrated books on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars well written and comprehensive
This book has just about all that you can ask of a book on basic weight training; programs, techniques, principles, cautions, etc. It's also well-organized, printed on acid-free, recycled paper, andhas several useful appendices, as well as a glossary and a comprehensive index after the text section. If you can buy just one weight training guide, this is a very good choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Weight Training 101
In his 3rd edition of this book, exercise physiologist Tom Fahey , continues to present the basics of weight training and offers the latest information from some sports medicine and exercise physiology research. The book is simple and concise. It is recommended for the person who has limited or even no weight training experience or knowledge but who is interested in startinga weight lifting routine.

Chapters include information on muscle development, exercise mechanics and specfic chapters that will help you develop different areas of the body such as chest & shoulders, arms, abdominals, neck and back, and lower body.In addition toexercises with free weights, Fahey also includes routines using Universal Gym and Nautilus type equipment. A chapter on nutrition includes information on diet and performance, steroids and eating disorders.

This is a good primer fordeveloping abeginner's weight training program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Yet
I recently boought this book and read it in one sitting on a flight. It is the best I've seen yet.Not only does it have great weight training guidance with various kinds of equipment (barbell, dumbell, & various machines) but it gives variations and clear cautions. In addition it has the best nutrition & lifestyle discussion and getting started section I've ever seen.It also discusses the difference between strength, power and ensdurance and how to achieve them.Simply trhe best yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Off the Couch!
For those with a less-than-active lifestyle, this book will help you get started in weight training.Great exercises are included.

2-0 out of 5 stars May be helpful for older women, otherwise not useful
If you manage not to get distracted by the sheer number of her photos, many of which are quite unnecessary, you MAY actually do some of her exercises and find this book useful. However, I couldn't help but get distracted by her narcissistic view of herself and the redundancy of many of the exercises that she presents.

This is not for anyone who is past the couch-potato stage of fitness. I purchased this book hoping that I would find good exercises that women could do anywhere, especially when traveling and not having access to a gym. But these exercises haven't helped me at all. I've been better off doing push-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, and dips. For anyone who is a true couch-potato and does not exercise at all, however, this may be truly helpful.

For anyone with a moderate to active lifestyle, I'd recommend purchasing the Body Sculpting Bible. I've kept that book for myself and I gave this book to my grandmother.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work out for busy Moms
I just ordered a second copy of the book because the workout charts I have had taped to my wall for the last 8 years are looking tatty.
It is an excellent workout for someone who wants to stay in shape and does not have a lot of time. I have never injured myself following her directions, and I am quite strong.
When I first started (after the birth of our third child) I used thebook while my husband was at work. He did not know I was doing this, but after a couple of weeks noticed that I had really begun to spring back into shape!
I agree with her assessment on which Gym machines are most useful, meaning which ones work muscles that are harder to exercise using free weights. Her suggestions are always geared to helping you make the most of your time.
Her dietary suggestion are pre-Atkins Renaissance (i.e she goes higher on carbs and lower on fats than today's trends do), but it is really the exercise principles and workouts you should buy the book for.

5-0 out of 5 stars ItReallyWorks!
I have been following the workout plan for two months now.I followed her suggestions of eating a lowfat diet, aerobic activity, and the weights (dumbbells.)My arms, shoulders, thighs, and calves all look toned now.I have a little more work to do on my stomach, but it is smaller than it was two months ago.Just as it took time to get a stomach, I know it will take time to go away. Like one of the other reviewers said, it takes me longer than 20 to 30 minutes, but that'so.k. because the results are worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Working Out
I had two previous copies of the book and loaned them out to friends and I loved the results so much that I had to purchase a third copy.

Anyone who follows the program designed in the book will love the results. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dated Beginners Guide
Disappointed is about the only word that comes to mind. The book is written for complete novices (trust me, you know more than you might realize, which will be painfully obvious once you open this book.). Aside from the lengthy overview of the basics, you get hand drawn images of imaginary people doing really basic moves.Yay. And the whole "set up your own routine" is clunky and rather limited given the scope of exercises provided.Do yourself a favor and avoid this title.Instead, pick up The Abs Diet Get Fit Stay Fit Plan, which is much more complete, modern, and useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better exercise books
This really is a well thought out book, if your getting into weights (i.e. from home) then this is great, does not tell you everything, but really does explain the basics, exercises and posture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn To Design Your Own Weight Training Programs
I'm fortunate to have a brother with a master's degree in exercise science and a lot of experience in strength training, as he's always designed my weight training programs for me. But being the self-reliant kind of person that I am, and not wanting to impose too much on my brother's time, I asked him to tell me what one book he would recommend to someone who wanted to learn how to design their own weight training program. He immediately recommended Weight Training Steps to Success. After reading this book, I understand why he recommended it so highly.

The authors first explain the physiology behind weight training and give a detailed orientation on weight training equipment. They then take you step-by-step through learning abasic weight training program, choosing appropriate exercises for each major muscle group. They place great emphasis on taking things slowly and learning proper form for all the exercises before tackling heavier weights for training. The steps for performing each exercise are clear and detailed, and they provide a simple procedure for you to determine with what weight you should start training for each exercise.

After you have mastered the basic training program, they move on to discussing how to design your own training program based on your specific goals (strength, endurance, hypertrophy, or a combination). Their coverage of periodization is the most simple and practical I've ever seen, and it is one of the major reasons my brother recommended this book.

I had some experience with weight training before reading Weight Training Steps to Success, but I had just been doing what I had been told, not really knowing why I was doing what I was doing.I certainly didn't know what to do next after I had reached a certain point. Now I know the whys and hows, and will be able to design my own training program as I continue to progress. This book is also perfect for the absolute weight training beginner, as it assumes no knowledge or experience whatsoever. In short, this book is the perfect place to start if you want to learn how to design your own weight training program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
After digging through piles of books at the library about weight lifting we finally come upon this one and immediately went out and purchased our own copy...

This book is *excellent* for those beginning weight training. It's explanations of things are down-to-earth and simplified without being "dummy-fied".

5-0 out of 5 stars For once I don't feel lost reading a weight training book
I like to research any new endevor, before I commit to a course of action. As a beginning weight "trainee", out of all of the books I've read about this subject, this was the most clear, concise and comprehensive. It gave me all of the information I needed to not only tailor my own program, but where and how to begin, (i.e. how to calculate a good starting workout load, how many reps, etc...)The book takes you through the basics, but is flexible enough to fit anybody's particular preferences and resources. While a few more exercises would be helpful, there are plenty of them layed out to get a good program started. ...
