4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical help for your own training program
This is the most helpful book I have found for advice on locating or constructing a weight lifting program to meet your goals. The authors are obviously experts because their advice is backed with reason and covers a wide spectrum of needs - just what you expect from consultants who know both theory and practice of their field.Whether you are a beginner or advanced lifter, young or old, this book will put you on a progression of good programs for a very long time.

The book helps you assess your current readiness for weight lifting, and encourages you to think about your goals as being in one of three areas: muscle toning, body shaping, or strength building.Of course there is overlap between these since any program will accomplish some of these elements, but it is a matter of emphasis in the program you will follow. Then the book has nice color coded charts for 6 different zones which are basically your starting experience level for any one of the three goals. There are also alternate week and month ideas to really help you get the most time out of these plans. The recommended programs usually last one month and then encourage you to switch to another for continued progress. Most programs introduce slight variations at week 3 as well. There are 2, 3 and 4 day a week programs depending upon your goal and experience (color zone).

There are lots of charts and helpful calendars, etc. You can copy the charts to track your progress. By using these tools you can learn more about how to design your own programs and the authors talk you through that as well.

It is important to know what this book is not.It is not a detailed exercise manual showing lots of different exercises and their variations. There is an exercise appendix so if this were your only book, you could do the programs, but exercise details are not the emphasis of this book. Nor is nutrition, or detailed anatomy diagrams - both are mentioned briefly.

This is a great book of sound weight lifting programs for most of us.I say most of us, because expert body builders will probably find most of this book too easy or obvious for their needs. But for most of us it represents a tremendously helpful set of programs and ideas to get us from wherever we are to being more advanced lifters.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only good for beginners
This book is only good if you have never stepped foot in a gym. More than half the exercises are longer than 60 min and no mention of diet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheap but mediocre
This book has a decent amount of basic material and is worth the ten dollar price tag. A good chunk of the book is filled with mostly repetitious tables about color coded training 'zones', information which could have been compressed into a few pages. I was looking for more details about diet and fat loss which I didn't find.

Apart from that, the binding quality is poor and the pages are coming out of my book after only a couple of months of use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding "How-to" Book
This book is superb for anyone who is considering weight training for fitness. The different spectrum levels guide you through workouts geared to the level of YOUR athletic ability, from absolute beginner to seasoned athlete. The book offers clear instructions on how to perform the suggested exercises without becoming overly technical. It gives you what you need to know, and not too much more. The section on designing your own workout is worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR A BEGINNER
I was looking for a book that would lead me step by step through a program for toning and weight loss. This book has it all.Instructions, starting points for weight on each exercise, suggestions of warm up and cool down, etc. There are three main programs outlined in the book, one for toning, one for strength training and one for body building. There is also a detailed section on how to set up your own weight training program.

I bought this book because I wanted a program to follow without paying for a personal trainer. It works!I was an absolute beginner and have been at it now for about 30 weeks - the results are great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it!
Great information to get you started.

Explains how to put together your own routines, but also gives beginner, intermediate, and advanced workouts to follow.

Two pages devoted to each exersize with: great pictures, clear explanation of techniques & trainers tips, muscles worked, skill level & variations.

Combined with 101 Workouts for Women by M&F Hers and you'll never be bored at the gym again.

And as much as I enjoy this book... the quality is terrible. It WILL fallapart after a few weeks of use. Would be perfect spiral bound.

4-0 out of 5 stars helped me gain muscle and lose fat
I worked through the Beginner and Intermediate Workouts for the first 12 weeks, and lost 4 pounds, and, more importantly, close to 5% body fat. Despite the poor binding, the workout plan is worth the purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good info but awful binding....
The information is good but not necessarily any different to what one would find in the fitness magazines such as M&F Hers and Shape.Provided that one subscribes (or has access)to either of these magazines and creates a scrap book of the exercises shown, perhaps it could serve as a decent substitute for this one.Believe it or not, some of the info presented can even be found in Weight training for Dummies (though it has alot of extra verbiage!).

One of the better features of the book is where they demonstrate how to progress through a 6 wk weight-training program...this is an excellent idea esp. if one does not have access to a trainer.

However, my major disappointment w/this purchase stems from the quality of the book itself...after reading it for a few hours the FIRST day, the pages started loosening!Unbelievable!!In making this purchase, it seems like there is too much of a trade-off between reading up on the material and actually maintaining the book in decent condition.

Not a bad resource overall.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
This is an amazing book.I wanted to buy a book on weight training and I am not disappointed.Like the previous reviews said, the book contains lots of photos with dos and don't dos. It clearly shows which target muscles you are working when working with dumbells.

I only wish that there was more classification for each muscle group (like chest, upper arm, abs) instead of Upper Body and Lower body.

I would strongly recommend this book for those that don't have the time to go the gym and want to train at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The pictures are wonderful.I found the pictures that illustrate the "wrong" postures while training to be especially helpful, as well as all the step by step instructions and tips. Being new to weight traning, I really found this book to be useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book - approved by my physical therapist
I had a shoulder injury and toward the end of physical therapy, we moved to strengthening exercises/weight lifting. I am a person that likes pictures (as opposed to words) and this book provides good pictures of how each exercise should be done.It also shows you how NOT to do them.It shows what muscles are affected by each exercise, plus a section on stretching. My PT was very impressed by it and started thumbing through it and said he was going to buy it to show patients in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter book!
I picked this book randomly and it turned out to be a great book to start out with.I tried going to the gym before I got this book and the weights scared me.The next day I bought the book and took 2-3 days to read through the entire thing and everything made sense.I also saw the correct way to do each routine. One of the best things it did was lay out all the different types of routines you can do, whether it be full body, or focusing on one or two muscles per workout.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for beginners
I bought this book when I decided to start weight training. I had never done any weight training before so I needed a book that covered the basics. Maran Illustrated has proven a great choice.
The range of exercises is from easy to advanced so that you do not need to buy another book after you have learned the basics and are ready for something more challenging.
The photographs and explanations of each exercise are very clear and easy to follow. As the previous reveiwer has mentioned, there are also photographs of what NOT to do, which is important for everybody and for beginners - essential.
The book is suitable for those who go to a gym and for those who prefer to exercise at home. It also explains the advantages of both, home and gym.
It offers a range of exercises one can do while travelling.
I recommend this book to anybody who would like to start weight training; the book will also be useful for those who know the basics already. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Edition is Way Better
I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's an important pick for any considering strength training efforts past 50
Strength training has many advantages, from decreasing symptoms of arthritis and diabetes to increasing endurance and weight loss, but most strength training titles focus on the under-40 crowd. STRENGTH TRAINING PAST 50 offers a range of workouts and programs designed for the over-50 set, offering a range of routines illustrated by black and white photos of over-50 exercisers. It's an important pick for any considering strength training efforts past 50, and is recommended for any library catering to health and fitness patrons of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strength Training Past 50
This book has very good charts for strength traning of the whole body.It lists diffenent muscle groups and how to lift weights to strengthen that group.I would give it 5 stars if they had the page numbers of the diffenent exercises listed in the charts showing what muscle you need to exercise. You have to thumb through many pages to see how to do the exercise listed in the chart.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not specific to those over 50
This book is a good guide to beginning strength training for anyone. The book contains dozens of basic descriptions of machine and free weight exercises, listing muscle groups worked. However, I give this bookonly 2 stars because except for the title and a few charts, the book has little specific information for over 50 exercisers. Those looking for ways to tailor exercise routines for arthritis,or trying to decide which exercises stress joints the least will need to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Strength Training Past 50
The book is exactly what I wanted. The instructions are very detailed with pictures. One can read, and then implement the exercise personally.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
Not at all what I expected.I was hoping for more things that we could use at home, rather than having to go to a gymn to use equipment there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Volume II, better than Volume One (but see review)
The author, after having a good response with volume one of the same name, came back with a second book.I bought it after having very good results both physically and psychologically from book one.I am halfway through book two, and I have to say this is even better.Very straightforward, no nonsense advice on what to lift, how much to lift, and in what pattern, and with greater sophistication than book one.
I would caution anyone unless they have some sort of background in lifting (or have gone through book one at least once) to not start with volume 2.On the other side, if you are advanced and have a morethorough/detailed regimen already, skip this as well- you will probably be a little bored. And as a small quibble, although the pictures are excellent, one could always use more (in my ideal little world, I think three pictures for every exercise would be great!
I see that the next book is coming out March of 2008...

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid intro to weight training
I've been lifitng weights on/off for about 3 years now and I was nudged to buy this book after reading the reviews. It's simple approach is one I think cannot be ignored considering the plethera of books on the subject. I've been following a modified version of this "plan" for about 4 weeks now and i gotta tell you that I am getting good results.The best suggestions in my opinion are not new and to review the best of what i think the book has to offer;

-Proper lifting technique
-Proper breathing
-scheduled variety (To avoid the bordom factor and plateau effect)

After following the guidelines for Volume I, I just ordered Volume II and am anxious to continue on with advice from it as well.

If you are a disciplined, experienced weight trainer, this is not the book for you.If you are just starting out and want a simple intro to get started and see results, this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worksouts that Truly work
I had this set of workout books a few years ago but had lost them in moves. After returning to the gym from an injury, I decided to buy them again. It is like having a trainer without the outrageous costs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff but..
This book's forte is that it give detailed instructions with pictures for all of the exercises. The bad thing is that the routines in here just contain enough exercises to hit all of your muscles.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST-BUY for serious hockey players
Use it in the summer - Use it in the winter -

Just get this book!It will have you in great shape for the season.I can 'check' much harder now, but more importantly I can skate faster, and my shots have more velocity. You'll see what i mean after a few weeks of following the hockey specific programs in this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Everyone knows that dieting without exercise doesn’t work. But not all exercises are equally effective. Weights for Weight Loss explains why weight training is the best way to get in shape and provides readers with a comprehensive program that will guarantee success. The author dispels the five myths of weight training (fat turns to muscle, lifting makes for bulky muscles, weights are for men, it’s easy to get hurt, heavier is better) and details the numerous benefits of building muscle, such as gaining more energy and a more youthful appearance, and — most importantly — greater fat loss with less effort. The book features exercises for all levels of fitness, from beginner to advanced.

Each exercise is clearly explained with step-by-step instructions and photos that show proper technique. Weights for Weight Loss's specialty programs include "The 10-Minute Body Blitz," which hits all the major muscle groups; "The 30-Minute Cardio Circuit," where exercises are performed at a fast pace with no rest in between; and "The 30-Minute Super Sculpt," where heavier weights are used for three sets in a row to exhaust muscles one at a time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough
This is one of my least favorite book for weight training. There are very few exercises and there could have been a better selection.I have been using hand weights for years so beleive me that you would do better buying the many other books offered at Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Weights for Weight Loss
This is an excellent book!I am following it daily as a guide for weight training to a healthier lifestyle. It is easy to follow and understand and I am already seeing results.I have worked through each exercise and started this morning on the 30-day program that is outlined in the book. I will be ordering more books from this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Great book for the novice whose just starting to get into weights to tone up and lose weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
I primarily bought this book for the 40 minute Cardio/Sculpt Circuit workout listed on the back cover. The day I received it I read the entire book in one sitting. For such a tiny book, there was so much information covered that I hadn't read in other books (ex. metabolism, what is a calorie, mental focusing, etc.). I was very impressed by all this, but the workouts themselves WOW. I love the clear descriptions of the workouts and the explanations of what results to expect. I have only tried the 40 minute Cardio/Sculpt Circuit and I incorporated into my current schedule rather than one of those listed in the book. I thought it was awesome and I definitely felt challenged. The exercises themselves have clear and concise descriptions and pictures on the movements. There are many basic exercises that are found in many other books, but there are also many I haven't seen before and love them already (ex. scooped flye for pectorals, lat pull side, single leg squat, most of the core series, etc.). This book doesn't skimp on the stretching moves as do many other books. For only 96 pages it is well packed with information, 4 workouts, 3 programs, and a nice catalog of exercises.

In regard to working out with books: I love this method because (1) I can keep up without having someone else set my pace and rhythm. (2a) Working out doesn't interfere with my TV watching in the evening. (2b) I can get in a workout at a decent time (I don't have a fancy recording device to help with this problem and don't really want to fork out money for one).(3) I am my best motivator. I really felt Ellen Barrett was motivating, especially because her first exercise is a mental one: you are responsible for you and your weight loss < This is a paraphrase.

Overall, I love this book and truly believe it's a great addition to my growing library of exercise and fitness books. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in exercise and fitness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it says it is
I've been using the exercises in this book for the past couple weeks now. It is a lot of fun. I bought it because I was bored with my regular routine. I wanted to try some new/different exercises, but I was having trouble thinking of any. I was pleased when I opened the book and saw how many exercises there were. They are all free-weight exercises. Each exercise is explained and has a few pictures to go with it, so you will definitely understand how to do it. Also, what I really like is that it has routines to follow. Each one accomplishes something different. If you already know a lot of weight exercises you would be wasting your money, but I'm happy with this purchase, it's exactly what I was looking for ... 2-0 out of 5 stars preachytone, too wordy
The tone of this book is so preachy and condescending that I can't seem to get to the exercises themselves. Each chapter begins with a several-page story about a person whose life was turned around their work with the author on Pilates. Then there are several long pages of essays, with lots of quotations and name-dropping and helpful self-improvement tips like "every day you will need to restart" and "one becomes old when fixities of habits are established."

I am sure that there are subtleties about the approach that need to be conveyed. However, I would prefer to use a book with a more direct writing style so I can get the information I need quickly and get on with my workout.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of my money...unhelpful book
This book is not great. There is a lot of useless fluff at the beginning of each chapter, when the author tells a long, very boring story (ie: an October day on a train) that is not conducive to building core strength. The pictures are in black & white, and there are not as many great exercises compared to other books. With this book, you'll probably spend all your time reading rather than doing exercises. This book is not direct or to the point, resulting in many pages that again, you'll have to read to find maybe one key point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colleen is Amazing
I own all of Colleen's books and they just keep getting better and better. I ride horses and I was looking for a workout that would inprove my balance and help me to be more aware of what my body was doing. The best part of working out on a ball is that if you make a mistake the ball moves so you KNOW that you are doing something wrong! I recommend this book for eveyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb strength training book for everybody
This is Colleen's third "on the ball" book, and it just keeps getting better. When one hears the words "strength training", the words usually implied are "for atheletes". Colleen certainly covers challenging exercises, but she also includes chapters for rehabilitation, seniors, and one for children. What a delight! Besides the Swiss Ball, Colleen also uses stretch bands, small hand weights, and the small dynaball in the routines. The exercises using the swiss ball and dynaball simultaneously are quite challenging; they allow one to extend the concept of "core stability" to the deep muscle lines in our arms and legs.

One particularly striking exercise: on p. 124, Colleen is doing a one-armed rowing motion while prone on the Swiss Ball. The non-rowing arm is balancing by holding onto a dynaball. Study that left arm! The dynaball completely alters the quality of the exercise; it makes the one-arm exercise supremely challenging for the entire upper body and both arms. Colleen herself is the model for these hand-weight exercises; the lines of her body simultaneously demonstrate fantastic strength and amazing relaxation/suppleness in her superficial muscle lines.

When Colleen's "Pilates on the Ball" first came out, there were virtually no titles of "ball" exercises. Now, there are literally dozens of titles. The bad news for those other authors: Colleen is the definitive expert in this field, and she continues her path of innovation with this book.

If you want to improve your strength, get this book. If you want to improve your flexibility or rehab from an injury, get this book. If you have children or parents who want to maintain/improve their strength/flexibility/fun, get this book. The Swiss Ball is no passing fad, and this book will show why. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review by former Physiology Teaching Fellow (6.0!)
I am a former physiology Teaching Fellow, biochemist and personal trainer. Now, I'm empoyeed in the psychology field, but at one time I was very involved in this area.I have had some injuries along the way including a back, neck and wrist.I worked in a gym and I understand the potential to get injured from accidents and bad technique.I also understand how strength imbalances and misinformation can result in injury down the road. This is the context from which I'm writing my review.

First of all, I can't praise this book enough. If I could, I would give it a 6.0!For starters, it is well-organized, dense with useful accurate information and encouraging in tone.It is also honest, realistic and offers the reader high value for a relatively low investment.

In my opinion, this author and the author of Starting Strength: A Simple and Practical Guide for Coaching Beginners are the two best in the field bar none.I particularly like Stuart McRobert, however, because you will learn many valuable things from any of his books no matter what your level is.You will also learn a lot about what is and isn't possible based on your genetics and how to move forward if you are a hardgainer.

In reality, I think that one or two of Stuart McRobert's books is all you need. Most of his books are equal to three or more of other authors and all of his books are easily readable. You can see more of my recommendations on my listmania list under this category.

It is truly rare to see such an honest, balanced approach within this genre. It also rare to see so much well-organized and simple information all in one place. As I said... I feel this book goes beyond a 5.0, especially when compared to similar books on the topic. In a nutshell, it's the practical nuts and bolts of training without going over the top, exaggerating or not backing up what is said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely in the top ten of weight training books
I read all the reviews about this book and they sounded impressive. Went ahead and placed the order and it took me more than six months before I could lay my hands on it, since it was out of stock. This bookwas worth the wait. Very thorough and insightful and makes a lot of sense. You gain so much knowledge that you can't help feeling like an expert. My approach to weight training nowadays is more practical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, the best book I have read on weight training
I can't really say enough good things about this book. No, it's not perfect, but it's heaps better than most of the books on weight training. This focuses specifically on safety and technique, not on routines or dieting. The author is currently putting out a new book with revised directions from this book and all the training/dieting info in one handy package.I can't wait to get it.A bit expensive but I'd rather spend forty bucks on reliable, one-volume info than waste my time and money on countless less helpful books and magazines.

Helpful photos, not only of good form but also common mistakes to avoid.
Clear explanations, almost excessive pointers about what do keep in mind as you do each exercise. The author is super-orthodox about safety and form, which may put off a lot of young guys, but if you've had a single back injury you will really appreciate his point of view. It's the type of thing that you don't want to think about until you've been there and suffered!

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST learn Perfect Form for Bodybuilding
There are trainees out there who are bench pressing 90lbs of iron for twenty reps who praise themselves after doing it, but know in the back of their mind that their right wrist is starting to get a little sore from their workout. When moving onto the barbell curl that wrist just hurts too much to complete a full set. Well "pain is gain" so they drop the set and go back to the dressing room knowing that it will be two weeks before they recover. Try giving the same trainee "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique" and watch them reduce the bench press from 90lbs to 45lbs for eight reps maximum. "What has gone wrong?" they might ask. "Why have I suddenly gone from brawn to frailty?" The truth is that nothing is wrong. They are just learning to do it right this time... and they will gain more because of it. While motivation bodybuilding books like "Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" by Arnold Schwarzenegger, will certainly show you the vast majority of exercises that are required for a great high volume training (HVT) program, it does not go to great length to show you everything that you need to know about doing the exercises correctly and the pitfalls of doing them incorrectly. Danger workouts include the Vertical Machine Press, Straight-Arm Pullover, Bent-Over Barbell Rows, Bent-Over dumbbell Rows, T-bar rows and the One-Arm Dumbbell Row to name but a few. Although nearly everyone can get away with doing these exercises in small amounts without injury, they are considered high risk exercises and long term applications can prove absolutely disastrous. If the basic low-risk workouts can cause injury when executed without perfect form do you really want to increase the odds of getting an injury by doing high-risk exercises with bad form? While "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique" does not promise an injury free bodybuilding career it will firmly establish conditions that will prevent injury. If you can workout as much as you like as often as you like and do not need to nurse an injury then naturally the result is a gain rather than a loss that could have been avoided. Every exercise you learn from a book or a magazine should be cross-referenced with "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique" to see what it has to say. Even bench pressing professionals who have been at this for years will find that their form is not as good as what this book can prescribe. On first impressions I was seriously considering the fact that I had bought into another dud back page bodybuilding book that had hyped itself beyond its real value. I was concerned to find that it only contained 34 exercises and was full of self-proclaimed praise commercials all over the front and back cover. I have since come to learn that those adverts are there for good reason and 34 exercises expanding on perfect form is no small amount. The fact that it covers the big three - Bench Press, Deadlift and Squat is enough to substantiate the $20 price tag. It also includes Back Extension, Cable Row, Calf Raise, Close-Grip Bench Press, Crunch Abdominal Work, Curl, Decline Bench Press, Dumbbell Row, Finger Extension, Grip Machine Training, Incline Bench Press, Leg Press, Lever Bar Work, L-fly, Neck Work, Overhead Lockout, Overhead Press, Parallel Bar Dip, Partial Deadlift, Pinch-grip Lifting, Prone Row, Pulldown, Pullover, Pullup/Chin, Pushdown, Rader Chest Pull, Shrug, Side Bend, Squat, Stiff-legged Deadlift, Thick-bar Hold and the Wrist Roller Training. I had given up on ever doing a Close-Grip Bench Press. I guessed that some exercises are just not for some people. It took me several readings of the Bench Press section to understand that even though I believed I was executing right angle holds I was not, meaning that my hands where too close. When I was told to bring them in closer for the Close-Grip Bench Press I just ended up murdering my wrists and elbows. This book eventually taught me that my Bench Press was more of a Close-Grip Bench Press and my Close-Grip Bench Press something that was just begging for an injury. I can now perform both. Also I am more aware of back arching where I thought there could not possibly be any. All you need to do is to look at the pictures in "Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" to see that even these professionals had no qualms about using a photograph where there is evidently bad form being used. You can literally see the holes after learning from "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique". It is also the kind of book that becomes more useful the more you use it. This is by no means a quick-fix booklet but a much needed and much sought after bodybuilding manual. I would certainly read and learn everything in here before I consider any other book outside of it. While the Schwarzenegger bible is a great motivation tool this book is really where you want to focus. Forget all the other books about different training methods until you get perfect form right first and then you will be in a much better position to judge other training methods, especially the ones that tend to have an impact on executing perfect form correctly. For some reason other books and bodybuilders keep making reference to slow and controlled exercising to avoid injury. They erroneously call this `perfect form' from time to time. Injury has nothing to do with the speed or control of the exercise. Injury occurs because of bad form. But once you perfect form you should go slowly. If there is any advocate for `one method' in bodybuilding that can improve on gains then that `one method' is learning perfect form. I will update this review as I do more research/practice. Until then...

Astalavista baby!

*Updates*
- His other book "Brawn" teaches doing the big three progressively for the best gains - Squats, Deadlifts and Bench Press, so learn them and do them.
- Read "Brawn" after you read this.
- read "Beyond Brawn" for advanced training material.
- Watch out for the "Breathing Pullover" exercise. This can cause shoulder discomfort. Stop doing them if you feel your shoulder pulling.
- Pushdowns are for toning triceps not for building tricep muscle. Use dips for that.
- Have someone show you the deadlift before you do any.
- Dumbbell incline bench press on p.93 is not the best. Bring elbows up to shoulder level and dip them slightly. Go slow getting them back into this position.
- He has a book called "Build Muscle, Lose Fat, Look Great!" that has updates on form with other good info.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book of Technique for all types of weightlifters
Most weight training books bifurcate either in the direction of body building or powerlifting. But both camps have common ground in needing to learn propert technique. This is the book, and it has something for everyone in detail. If you are a body-builder there are plenty of isolation exercises described, even though the author emphasizes compound lifts. If you are a powerlifter/strength trainer, it has very detailed descriptions and pictures on the squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead presses and even a fair amount on grip work.

The author obviously wrote a book that he would have liked to have had when he began his training. As McRobert explains in several places, he now has a bad back due to years of improper training. He has written this book to help others avoid the same fate or, as in my case, to help us train despite of such drawbacks.

You cant train when you are injured, so get smart and learn proper technique. You would do wise, toward that end, to study this book thoroughly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Start, Proven Results
After many years of doing very little exercise, I returned to the gym about a year ago.I purchased this book 3 months later and read it cover to cover, an enjoyable read.I continue to use the book as a reference to add additional and change exercises on a regular basis.Having followed some of the sample routines they provide, I can attest to a significant increase in strength and in general well-being. There are enough details and variations to satisfy someone just starting or getting more serious about lifting.I recommend this book - and thank the authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction/reference for weight training
I'm glad I started with this book...it's well organized and very thorough. Covers all the essential things a person should know to get started in the weight room. It's also going to stay on my shelf for a long time as a reference, because it gives good tips on form, exercises, etc., as well as for other things that might pop up. you will probably want more info as you get more into training, but this book will continue to be of use as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource
I got this for my husband who is build like a horse, very active, but entirely unatheletic. I wanted to work out again and he never had but wanted to try. He learned alot about how wieght training works and is thrilled with the results (say Arnold!. I still refer back to it regularly to update our workout. It is simple and has all the info you need to get started whether you have lifted before or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Way to Get Started
This is the best book that I have found on weight training. I needed a thorough book to get started and this was it. Other than my very lackluster lifting durig high school I have never seriously lifted, so I am far from an expert on lifting. I must add however that after having looked at many books on weight training I feel like a bit of an expert on the literature. What I found was that most books are geared to those that already know the subject. These books assumed many techniques I did not know, implied that I needed to work out about 3 hours at a time for 8 days a week and rambled on and on and on.

The Idiot's Guide to Weight Training thoroughly introduced me to everything that I needed to get started. After reading this book, I walked into a fitness store, bought the starter equipment I needed and started to lift. As I write this I am bit sore from the first few lifting sesions, but I am excited and looking forward to the future weeks and months. This book helps with equipment, clothing, eating, stretching, excercise instructions, routines and safety. The authors have provided a very thorough, readable and motivating book. In my estimation this book is an extremely valuable addition to the topic, and is indeed as far as I can tell the best book available to the beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hold on to your copy!
I find this book lends itself to everyone who comes into my home.Itkeeps getting borrowed. It is light and humorous reading yet extremely infomative.Fitness buffs rounding out their knowledge base and those hesitantly looking into beginning a weight- training regimenwill find this bookan enjoyable read and an informative resource.Just hold on to your copy...... ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not a good strength training book!
I was shocked to see that this book got such high reviews.I found it to be extremely lacking.I suppose it might be alright for a woman whose never lifted a weight in her life, but for anyone serious about weight training, this book will not help you.I highly recommend Strength Training Anatomy (not the women's version).I use now use that book to formulate all my strength routines.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for general well-being, but not serious weight training
Joan Pagano's first love is yoga, and it shows in the type of exercises in this book. She also appears to have a cross-disciplinary interest in physical therapy; I recognize severalexercises (all excellent) which I learned from physical therapists in recovering from injuries.

I give Ms. Pagano an A+ for both clarity and variety. The book has clear descriptions of exercises, and excellent photos with a white dotted line showing the muscles each exercise is supposed to work. I was able to understand how to properly perform several stretches which had been unclear in other books. The variety is excellent, including many exercises for rubber resistance bands and for those big, fun, colorful stability balls. I was pleasantly surprised to find several pages on exercises for improving posture.

Where the book really shines is in providing a safe, approachable beginning for women who are either very out of shape or recovering from illness. For example, she de-scarifies the push-up, that ultimate symbol of military-grade fitness, by showing four less physically demanding variations in order of gradually increasing difficulty.

But I do have one major caveat: If you're hoping for a serious weight training book--which will help you build muscle--this is not the one. Ms. Pagano seems to seriously underestimate women's strength. Doesn't she know we lift grocery bags, babies and suitcases in airports? The section on push-ups, for example, fails to include the standard 'man's" push-up. I would think that working through the other four would be with a goal of getting there, to the most difficult one. Nowhere in the book does she ever show a barbell, and her choice of dumbbell weights (mostly 3-8 lbs, with a maximum of 15 pounds recommended once in the book for lat rows) is almost insulting. Three to five pounds might be okay for a beginner looking to learn proper form, but after a few weeks most women can lift a lot more. Lifting weights which don't challenge your muscles will just waste your time, and very likely lead to discouragement when you see no results.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for yoga and physical-therapy style exercises for general well-being and injury prevention. It would also be useful as an adjunct to a serious weight-training program found elsewhere--just take the weight recommendations with a grain of salt and listen to your body instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength training for women
This is a great book for women who want to really learn how to use weights and do strength training effectively.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid information here
This book is one of my favorite strength training books--but the "strength training card deck" has much the same info in a handier form.
