5-0 out of 5 stars Train well with weights
Two quotes every athlete hears from nineth grade till the last day of collage:
"Coach says we need to focus"
"Coach says to lift in the off season"
That second recomenation- to lift weights- seems present in just about every sport. Why is this? Not because weight lifting is fun, but because it conditions the tendons, strenghens the muscles, and soldifies ones' balance to such a degee that many people get results even if they are doing it "wrong". An added bonus is that skeletal muscle, like cardiac muscle, is the stimulator to burn fat. Anerobics is now as highly recommended as aerobics!
Unfortunately we don't all have "bodybuilder" friends or the money to hire a personal trainer. Therefore, I was very pleased to find this book/DVD set. The DVD shows proper form for the most common lifts, and the book shows both the right way AND the wrong way to perform these exersizes.Bravo, Mr. Kinaken.
I also recommend:
"Getting Stronger"--B. Pearl (beginning and advanced weight routines)
And "Fitness is Religion"--R. Kybartas (motivation and inspiration)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for personal trainers
This book is a must for personal trainers. The DVD enclosed with the book goes through assessment procedures that are crucial when prescribing weight training exercises to your clients. For the novice weight trainer, it will definitely clear up any misconceptions you might have about how each weight training exercise should be performed in order to ensure efficiency and safety.

Also recommended for personal trainers:

Therapeutic Exercise: Foundations and Techniques by Kisner and Colby ... Read more

After some 20 years as a highly respected aerobic fitness instructor and health promoter--one who rarely uses the phrase "lose weight"--Kathy Smith is shifting her priorities. "I would never want to choose, but if I could only do one form of training from now on, I'd give up cardio and focus on weight training." A strong statement, indeed! The title of this, her fourth book, suggests Smith's goal is to help exercisers lose weight. But as readers work through the engrossing chapters on physiology, exercise basics, and making the shift from aerobics to weight lifting, Smith says they'll note that weight loss is simply a pleasant by-product of the true benefits generated by this straightforward, nonthreatening weight-lifting program.

Smith believes in the power of consistent, progressive exercise with free weights and weight-lifting machines to counteract the muscle loss and slower metabolism that naturally come with age and typically cause the pounds to pile on. Her 12-week "mini commitment" eases newcomers into a comprehensive program of weight lifting and sensible eating, and includes weekly checklists for tracking workouts and meals. Large photos accompany clearly written descriptions of more than 60 stretches and exercises, nicely organized by muscle group (chest, back, abdominals, and so on). Just pick a gym or a room at home, and Smith will provide the routine. Advocates of her popular fitness videos (more than two dozen to date) will appreciate Smith's natural warmth, encouragement, and intelligence throughout this motivational book. --Liane Thomas Book Description

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I found this book to be very helpful! I loved it. I have been exercising for many years using at home videos. I actually like this book more then some of the Kathy Smith Videos I have used! I wanted to get more involved with working out with weights now that I am in my 40's. The book covers the benefits of working out with weights, nutrition and covers lots of different exercises for each muscle group.(proper form is covered and explained in detail) for the entire body along with a suggested schedule or routine for each week. I have been very happy with the routines and do them entirely at home and have seen great results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh Start
I had weight trained several years ago with good results but a bad fall down a flight of stairs led me in a different direction and I after gaining weight and loosing muscle I need to start again. This was an excellent fresh start for me.I saw results in just a few weeks and feel stronger and healthier and have now moved on to more serious weight training once again.
Kathy's book is very easy to follow and had very clear direction. Her training advice is sound and her guide to technique was excellent. Her eating plan is sensible and easy to follow and I found no problem working it into my day to day lifestyle. The amount of time spend training each week is very reasonable.

A great book for beginners or people who want a FRESH START
Also a very reasonably priced book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength training is no longer a mystery
Prior to reading this book, I only used weights if they were part of an aerobics class. Now I have the confidence to walk into a weight room at a gym!Kathy teaches readers how to use weights both at home and in the gym setting. The how-to photos are very helpful.I also enjoyed the chapter on diet and was impressed by the fact that Kathy consulted with a Registered Dietitian for guidance on the nutrition chapter.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to incorporate strength training into their fitness routine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kathyis one of the best!
I've been lifting weights for a little over a year, so have already experienced many of the benefits Kathy mentions in her book.I've lost 40 pounds and about 18% body fat by following a good diet and weight training at progressively heavier weight and added sets.Even though I am not brand new to weight training, I still found the book helpful. There is an anatomy chart, and Kathy dispels many myths about weight lifting, in particular that women shouldn't lift heavy or that they will get big and bulky from lifting. Also, there were a couple of exercises that I was not doing, so I was able to modify my current program a bit.

I tried using a trainer, but frankly have been disappointed, so I am now learning all I can on my own.Lift Weights to Lose Weight will be a book that I use.I like it much better than the accompanying video tape, which I have used briefly; it is not a very comprehensive workout.

I recommend this book to beginners and intermediates, and anyone who wants to learn more about the basic principles of weight lifting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to keep your workout goal oriented and interesting
This book is great!I have always had a problem falling into a workout rut, and this book has designed a fun golf workout that changes every two weeks. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas presented
I like the way this book is put together. It lays out week by week plans for the off season as well as on season. The author also explains why certain workout techniques are suggested for different times of the year.I've read through and plan to use the routinues myself and see if if it puts me back in condition to play some over 40 ball.Until then I've reserved the final star.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful, but flawed layout
I found this to be a helpful overview of weight training for women, but my major criticism is the shabby job of coordinating the layout of text and drawings. Most of the drawings demonstrating an exercise are not put on the same page as the text description of that movement! A major drawback to an exercise book...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for safe, effective weight training.
I have examined a number of books on this topic, and found them wanting; in this small volume I found precisely the information I needed. The Fahey/Hutchinson book shows exercises for Nautilus and Universal Machines, and free weights as well.It is organized by regions of the body; for each exercise, the muscle group to be focussed upon is depicted by a line drawing, helping the trainee to visualize the region. The final chapter relates the important topics of diet and exercise in rather summary fashion, but as in every chapter, references are given for periodical articles and books on the subject.I would have liked a chapter on stretching, and how weight training might fit into an overall exercise program, and how exercise and aging interact. But those are minor quibbles; this book gives clear and safe instruction for the woman who wants weight training to be a part of her life for reasons of health and appearance ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time well.
Years after a car accident ended my weight training, I feel well enough to go back to free weights and pulled out this old book.Lots of books show dozens of moves and some may do a better job of explaining them. But this book does something that I've not seen that often in other books; they present a logical series of workouts that accelerate in intensity as your fitness increases.

The graphic layout of the programs is easy to translate into a spreadsheet or forms and you'll find it easy to adjust weight, repetition and set counts as you progress.

At the price this book goes for now you can't go wrong. It's true that the photos are pretty bad, but you don't need to spend much time looking at them anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars The next to last book I would get rid of.
This is a great book. It'll save you about a thousand bucks by showing you how to do exercises with simple hand weights as opposed to expensive machines. I would get rid of all other books I own save my bible before getting rid of this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what the title says...and more!
First let me say that I am very particular about the books that I aquire, and try finding authors that present the "real deal".
That said, I think this book is great! I have perhaps a bad habit of exchanging books that I do not find usefull. This is the first book I have purchased on the subject of weight training, and I am completely happy. First, it has great info on weight training in general. Goals, saftey, nutrition. Just enough to get you started. No preaching either, just encouragement. These first few chapters are followed by some warm-ups and stetching excercises. I also really love the routines they have set in the back. There are several, and they are progressive and could keep you going for months at least, while building up strenth. This book is written from a more gentle perspective, no jocks or jarheads here. I do agree with the reviewer about the pictures. They serve their purpose quite well, but when I saw the publishing date was in the early ninties I had to check to see if I was reading correctly. They all look straight out the seventies. But again, this book is more about doing than glamor and show. Great book for those who want a good workout from home with almost no equiptment at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
This book is great for beginners and for those who have been working out for awhile.Very easy to understand routines, safety tips, stretches and warm-ups.When I first discovered this book I had not worked out with weights at all. I felt challenged initially, yet the different programs the authors have worked out make the workouts fun, and definiteley not boring.I loved the pre-set routines when I first started, yet I ultimately customized my own to make it work even better for me.I recommend this book highly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I was looking to get in better shape for some of the sports that I do (racing sailboats being my main concern), and did not know the first thing about strength training. This book really set me on the right path, with lots of good information about how to do this safely and efficiently. I am about the farthest thing from a bodybuilder, but since I have been following their programs, I feel healthy and strong. All those little aches and pains from computer work have disappeared, and my knees don't click so much when I do stairs or exercise bikes. I do the workouts while I watch TV in the evenings, so I don't have to go out to a health club ... and I get the entertainment value as well. Kudos to the authors for providing such a great service! ... Read more

Clearly illustrated with step-by-step color photos of each exercise, Total Strength Training for Women guides the beginning or intermediate student through all aspects of weight training for strength rather than bulk, and offers a progressive plan for weight training at home or in the gym, working with free weights or fixed weights. 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Thorough
Illustrations of working muscle groups coordinate with in-depth analysis of critical exercises to help you build a more complete routine.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Need Strength Training Just to Carry This Book!
I just got my copy of this book today. From what I've looked at so far, it seems to be very clear, thorough and well-illustrated.My only complaint is that this book is oversized and heavy. It's not the kind of thing that will fit in my gym bag so I can refer to it while working out.I think it needs a better format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete
I was surprised at the depth of and introduction to some critical exercises that even the best strength training books do not even attempt to address:things like wrist strength, pronation movements, and so forth.I felt this book really rounded out my exercises and it pictured the muscles I use so that I could build a more complete routine around all of the muscle groups I wanted to target or had been neglecting.Great book, spiral with pix, easy to take to gym.

4-0 out of 5 stars Equipment Oriented
This book is heavily weighted toward the use of exercise machines. If you have access to them at home or in a gym, then it's an excellent book for toning and strength building. If you don't, you'll discover that, aside from the sturdy spiral format, it has little to offer the at-home exerciser interested in using handheld, wrist, or ankle weights and the Thera Band system. If the latter is more your speed, try Joan Pagano's excellent book: "Strength Training for Women."

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough!
I bought this and reviewed it, and it appeared quite thorough. My friend's daughter was getting into weight lifting and wanted to learn more about it.I lent her this book and she is very happy with it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good way to start the day
This book is just right for someone who wants to fit a little exercise into their day.The routines are easy but not effortless, and the warmups and exercises can usually be completed within 20 minutes. She recommends walking or jogging for 15 minutes for additional cardiovascular benefits.

Pages 6-15 discuss the benefits of exercise, the importance of doing the exercises correctly, and explains the equipment options (items I picked up at Target: light weights, dynabands, yoga blocks, body bars).Pages 17-19 give suggested workout schedules for different fitness levels, with a daily rotation through three focus areas: Day 1 = "legs", Day 2 = "arms and torso", Day 3 = "back and chest".Pages 20-27 lead you through ten simple warmup stretches.Pages 29-89 illustrate the various exercises and give detailed instructions.

There are a few editing-type problems I've noticed, but nothing important. My copy of the book was tightly bound, and I haven't lost any pages, as a previous reviewer had.

All-in-all, I think the book is easy to follow, and a straightforward way to have a little daily exercise without the stress of complicated equipment or a gym membership.

2-0 out of 5 stars not impressed
This book doesn't appear to have been edited well ... there are grammatical errors and label errors, as though there was a rush to the printers. The photos are rather dark. However, on the plus side, the fitness models show good form on almost every page. The workouts actualy appear to be minimal workouts ... the authorclaims you can do the workout in 30 minutes ... it seems it would be much less at least for the beginner and intermediate stages, given you only do 1-2 sets for only a few exercises per day. I don't believe most would progress very far using these plans, or rather, you'd progress to the advanced stage very quickly or become discouraged from the lack of improvement in your physique. In addition, the book fell apart in less than a week ... the pages fell out ... I'll use them to post on my workout wall.Poor quality production IMO.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, good exercise plans
This book gives excellent back-ground information as to the 'why' of weight-bearing exercises for women.Anyone who wasn't convinced before they read this book will be convinced after they read it.The book says on the cover that you will need 3-8 lb. weights, but actually you will need a dyna-band, a body-bar, and a large ball in addition to the weights.Three programs are given in the book - beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The exercises are challenging according to the level they aredesignated for.I like the exercises in this book and am using this book in addition to Smart Girls Do Dumbbells, Pilates exercises, and daily walking. This book offers a good program on it's own, or as an addition to other exercises you may already be doing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great instruction
I bought this book for my husband who just turned 60 this spring. He is no stranger to working out, especially since he was in the army many years ago.He was very fit and muscular and is a mechanic by trade so he is also very strong. He has also never had a problem with being overweight.A few years ago, he was very sick and lost a tremendous amount of muscle mass.Since we already had free weights here at home and exercise bands, this book seemed appropriate. When I gave it to him, he jumped right in and started using some of the exercises. There has been a marked improvement in both his muscle tone and mass.I catch him studying the pages to find yet another exercise that will improve "his guns".Since he is not a "gym" person this has been a godsend. His posture is improving as well as his confidence. He stated that he looks forward to the day when he will no longer look like a shriveled up old man. :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Book. Pages. Ink. Guess what is missing?
What is missing? What a million monkeys typing a million years also can't supply: real content.I'm still waiting for the weights part of this book, or maybe that will be the best seller, Part Two.

Here you have A Whole Bunch of Infinitely Detailed, Large Photographs, front side, back, over-head, left arm, right arm, thumb here, thumb there, of over-aged (I know: I am one, too.) mensches trying to heft 5 pound dumbbells over their heads. This just doesn't qualify as a weight training book, either for first graders nor for us AARP members.Let's get some real exercise and heft the not-so-weighty author overhead! What he needs before trying yet again to part us from our wallets instead of our fat is at least an hour in a real gym. Real Weights, Real Sweat.Go on, we'll allow you to include a Limited Liabilty contract that automatically takes effect -- publisher and author off the hook -- just like installing software, for the possible number of us who, emulating Mr. Stallone, consequentially pass over to the other side for our reward because we shouldn't be hefting on beta-blockers.

And, speaking of the fabulous Mr. Stallone; one more thing. It will help the sales of Revision 2, as well as my personal future dummy hefting. Please, Mr. Knopf, don't use your grandma as the model (With deep apologies to the lovely grandmothers therein.I sincerely love my elderly relatives, too. )Gimme an abundant selection of hot babes in skimpy suits, thus reminding and motivating me as to why I am really wanting to exercise. They don't even have to be lifting anything, so you can budget a one hour photo shoot for the whole book!My wife is not going to pick up and read a sweat-soaked exercise book lying on the floor of my den, nor does she need to know what brings my new muscle tone to the fore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed review by former physiology teaching fellow and biochemist...
Although I am currently not in the best of shape, at one time I worked as a personal trainer and by education I was trained as a research scientist.I have graduate education in both physiology and biochemistry and have worked with some high end athletes including one Olympic level powerlifter.Currently, I am looking to use strength training again myself because I was sidelined for a number of years by a back and neck injury, this is the context for my interview.

The first thing I would like to say is that I own and have bought many books on strength training and most of them are not even in the same category as this book.Of the books that are out there, most of them say the same thing in different ways, make unsubstantiated claims or set unrealistic expectations. In short, this book is a welcome exception. It is well-organized, detailed, thorough, well-written and dense with valuable material.

A lot of the focus here is on training for powerlifting. However, it's also a great strength training text with lots of references. The scope of the book is ambitious and covers the proper way to perform important exercises, information about periodization, explanations of how different types of programs affect the body, the importance of coordination, etc.

In addition, this title has many useful diagrams, training ideas and references to actual studies. The information in it is very credible and much more than one person's opinion.I was also extremely impressed with the detailed descriptions of how each exercise works, the anatomy involved and the sections on physiology.

One might assume that a book like this would read like a text book in accounting or calculus (not that there is anything wrong with either of these subjects).... However, it sometimes difficult to be technically precise and at the same time engaging to the reader. On this account, Dr. El-Hewie has certainly succeeded.

Although this book is quite expensive, it covers a TREMENDOUS amount of ground in a reasonable space. It was clearly a labor of love and it is well worth every cent.Rather than wasting money on more of the same, I recommend getting a few good books. This is one I would NOT like to be without.

Another book that I saw recently for hard-gainers had a lot of good content in terms of building mass.I think it fell down a bit in the nutrition/supplement area, but it is much less expensive than this and covers a subset of this material that is most important to training properly for mass. This book is called From Scrawny to Brawny. There are a FEW other books I saw that I thought were quite good and I will be reviewing them in the near future.I will most likely be reviewing the ones I thought were quite bad as well.

Lastly, this book covers lots of nuances like nervous system adaptation, relationships between strength, mass and power. The importance of coordination and how to plan a path forward depending upon your goals. It's really one stop shopping for an athletic approach to strength training vs. bodybuilding.Bodybuilders will find a lot of great material here, but this is NOT the emphasis of this particular book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Weight Training Book
What I liked: coverage of the different types of weight training (power lifting, body building, etc.), great description of body shortcomings (too stiff, weak arms, shoulders) and possible remedies, form for different lifts, interesting Egyptian history and training methods over time (40+ yrs), Q&A section

What I didn't like: 1st edition binding unraveling, small print, overwhelming size of information, sometimes dry writing style

Who should buy this? those looking beyond the basics and wanting something more integrative & descriptive approach - whole body lifting

5-0 out of 5 stars You're Never Too Old
Learn the right forms for power lifting and weightlifting so you don't injure yourself when lifting.Even a 75-year-old woman will find this reference guide a useful fitness tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books to have as a reference even for a woman of any age (even 75 years old.)
The descriptions of the reviewers: Slavisa Nesic and Larry Wagner "Athlete, Analyst, Coach, Dad"in this list do an excellent review and detailed description of the book. I just wanted to add my voice, as a woman, that I found his book incredibly useful too.

As is stated, the emphasis of El Howie's book is on weight-lifting and power-lifting (which focuses more on strength) as compared with Bodybuilding (to get those shapely muscles that make our stomach flat and the rest of us curvaceous.) Women in general want to look great in a bikini and the Bodybuilding orientation is the way to go.

But he gives enough coverage to Body-building and nevertheless, he is meticulous about form.

The other two books I have liked in conjunction with this is Delavier's Strength Anatomy and his Women's Strength Training Anatomy (I recommend getting both whether you are male or female.) Those books give you very clear basics for form, lots of detailed diagrams and so forth. El Howie's book is extremely comprehensive.

There are various debates as to how often to work out, whether you should focus on just parts of the body each day at a time or workout the whole body in each session. There are also differences of opinion as to best plan your meals, whether and when you should do cardio in conjunction with the weight-lifting. It would be useful, if you are a first-timer, to go for Body for Life or some other program that involves lifting weights. At bottom, in my experience, how one comes out on the various debates invariable is what works best for them, whether physiologically, psychologically or schedule wise.

I just want to say to any woman reading this, if you don't already know, you will never get back or achieve that girlish figure if you don't lift weights and lift heavy weights. And you can no matter what you age.

Though I do not want to provide a link on an Amazon post, if you google John Stone 42 the first link that comes up should be "Fit Women over 42- 89 on parade." If you go to that link you will find tons of stories with pictures of women going through fantastic transformations starting at age 50, 60 and older. Don't ever believe you are "too old" or "too out of shape" to achieve this.

And El-Howie's book is a great reference for getting form down correctly to get the best results and not injure yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
I bought this book and it was not a bad decision. Most of the reviews here are pretty accurate. He does cover unique ground in pointing out exercises that are not common in the more mainstream books like Body for Life and Lean Body Promise. The first edition has its fair share of editorial bugs but I think that you could piece together the general meaning given the context.I would point out that most books do not go into lifts such as the clean and snatch due to injury possibility. This is something that needs to be covered because some of these exercises can really put a person into jeopardy if they did not slowly build up to these type of movements. The more mainstream books tend to stick with bodyshaping movements and do not really go into more "athletic" moves. This is a good resource to consult for those type of movements but most people that I see working out at the gym are not into that type of lifting. In that way, the book is a bit overkill. The author has taken unnecessary pot-shots at the Body for Life and Lean Body books for being to simplistic or "looks based", but that is what a lot of people go for these days. They just want to know how to get from A to B as fast as possible. You look at Body for Life (even with its flaws) and the program is fairly simple and will give results as long as you are consistent. The downside with this book is that in being as comprehensive as it is, it misses the typical American way of life.I am not saying that this is the right way of thinking but it is out there.I would say that this is really geared towards those that are more advanced and not intimidated about more advanced lifting techniques. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Strength Training and Fitness
I was looking for a book that would help me strengthen and tone my muscles. Help me get a routine going that I can stick with. As I've gotten older I have lost a lot of muscle mass and I feel it's important to gain most of that back. Now that I'm alone I need to be able to take care of myself and do for myself. I believe this book will do the trick. It has helped Montel Williams out as this woman is his personal trainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars great guide
This book is easy to understand with quick simple workouts that really get your body working out.I never thought I could get my heart rate up with such simple work outs but I really did on this one!I often worry that I'll hurt myself doing exercises the wrong way but she's good at pointing out what to watch for to make sure you're doing it right. The exercises are short and easy to do before work or while dinner's in the oven. And I can adjust the number of reps I do to make sure I have that sore great work out feeling the next morning!Hope you all enjoy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Three years!
I have used the Lean, Long and Strong book on and off for three years now. After having twins in Jan 2005 I was determined to get back in shape, this book was given to me as a gift. The work outs are easy enough to build on and hard enough to challenge you. Her eating advise is practical and easy. Even though I have been doing it for three years I am still challenged everytime. I am in the best shape of my life, I am about the same size I was in high school and I recommend this book to any woman who is wondering where to start with strength training. I have to be honest, I am not comfortable using the strenght training equipment at a gym and I don't think I ever will be. Lean, Long and Strong is a quick, flexible program that really works! It helped me get rid of my "mommy" butt and gave me some shape back there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for getting back on track
I purchased this book for the purpose of getting back into shape after having baby #2.I was very active during both my pregnancies, so just needed something to 'tweak' myself back into pre-pregnancy form. This book absolutely served that purpose. For someone with limited time and resources (I don't have time to go to the gym, but have a few essential items at home), it's perfect. After a consistent training with this book, coupled with cardio, I lost my last 5 pounds in just a few short weeks. And my muscle definition is back! However, if you're looking for something more 'challenging' or if you have significant weight to lose, I suggest you hire a trainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength training in 15 minutes a day
I have been very impressed with this book. The strength training only takes 15 minutes a day and you can do it at home with only an exercise mat, exercise ball and 2 free weights. There is no excuse not to do it when you can do it at home in 15 minutes. She incorporates stretching with the weight-lifting - so you feel better afterwards.I would recommend this book to men and women. My husband has also found the workouts helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice reference and clear instruction
I am a fight trainer and I train athletes to compete in full contact and mixed martial arts style fights.I do have some young people that come to me for training. They are between the ages of 12 and 16 and obviously their training must be done differently than a full grown advanced athlete. This book gave me some direction and acknowledges many myths about youths training with weights. It is not a book for body building.Children should not be trying to "bodybuild".This is training for "strength and power".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Parents, Coaches and the Motivated Young Athlete

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid, timeless book for everyone from reformed couch potatoes to competitive bodybuilders
There are no silly fads here or wacko advice from the latest kid-wonder--just solid time-tested training weight training programs. I've used them, and I know they work for me, and I'm not particularly genetically talented for muscle-building. There is a heavy emphasis on free weights, which Bill Pearl believes provide the best workout. It's also very useful that most of the exercises in the book can be done in a fairly inexpensive home gym.

As a female reviewer, I can also say this is great book for women. When I first bought the first-edition of book in the early 1990s, itwas the only one I'd seen which advocated that women train like men. Specifically, that means free-weight exercises, including the bench press, and weights which are difficult on the last rep, in order to gain strength. He wasn't just talking out of his hat either, as he trained regularly with his wife, Judy, who has a beautiful, trim, feminine body. Today it's widely accepted that if women train like men they will gain strength without bulking up, but I give Bill Pearl credit for being one of the first to popularize that truth. The new edition of the book, which I bought recently, has an updated section on women.

I disagree with the earlier reviewer that photographs would be better than the simple line drawings in the book. The training programs with mini line drawings are excellent to photocopy and take to the gym! I've never seen a book with such convenient 'memory jogs' when you're still learning your program. The drawings are based on photographs of Bill and Judy working out, so they are accurate. Each mini-picture refers you to a page with a larger drawing and complete description of the exercise--so if you need more info, you just go there.

I also disagree that this book is only for serious obsessive body builders. I'm a very average person and it has helped me enormously over the years! At least 3/4 of the book is geared to average people or athletes whose main sport is not weight training. The book starts with three "general conditioning" programs for beginners--which gives you about six months of workouts. Once you've worked through those programsyou can decide to remain in a general conditioning track for strength and good health or move to either a sports-training track or a more serious bodybuilding track.

I've read quite a few weight-training books, and this all-time classic is still the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Guide
I started weight training a little over a year ago and have looked at so many different books (most of them from the library.) This one is definitelythe cream of the crop and is one of the few books I actually bought. It's very comprehensive and is like an encyclopedia of training moves for different body parts. It also gives info about what kind of strength training is helpful for various sports, so you can build muscle where you need it most. It does focus mostly on free weights, though it discusses weight machines too. It gives various routines from beginner to advanced and it even has a chapter on the history of body building (quite interesting!) The best thing about it though is the variety it offers. I get bored doing the same thing over and over and this book has been very useful to me in that regard. When I start to feel bored, I simply change my workout by choosing different excercies for each muscle group. I think even a seasoned body builder would find this book useful. Bill Pearl is also a vegetarian (ovo-lacto) and offers smart advice about food and weight training.

I am just getting back into working out with weights as it has been about eight years.Since then, I have forgotten everything and a trainer in my gym referred this book.I love it!Every day I go through and pick out the parts of the body I am going to work out and I am able to choose new techniques I have forgotten or have never tried before. It has been a few months and I love my results. This book shows you the proper way of doing things and what I like is it tells you exactly what part of the muscle(s) you are working.I recommend it for everyone that is just starting out or that needs some new techniques.

In my earlier review of "Weight Training for Men and Women" by the same author, I had addressed the same issues which appear in the current book, which is nothing more than reproducing the previous book under a different title. The reason for my second review is to attempt to answer my own concerning questions. Those are:

1- What are the simplest and basic exercises needed for staying fit versus achieving tip-top athleticism?
2- What are the basic nu
