Excerpt: Windsurfing is a surface water sport that combines elements of surfing and sailing. It consists of a windsurf board usually two to four meters long, powered by the effect of the wind on a sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating universal joint and comprises a mast, wishbone boom and sail. The sail area ranges from less than 3.0m to more than 12m depending on the conditions, the skill of the sailor and the type of windsurfing being undertaken. At one time referred to as "surfing's ginger haired cousin" by the sport's legendary champion, Robby Naish, windsurfing has long struggled to present a coherent image of the sport to outsiders. Indeed, until the 1990s participants would regularly use different names to describe the sport, including sailboarding and board sailing. Despite the term "Windsurfing" becoming the accepted name for the sport, participants are still called "sailors" and not "surfers". In fact windsurfing can be said to straddle both the laid-back culture of surf sports and the more rules-based environment of sailing. Although it might be considered a minimalistic version of a sailboat, a windsurfer offers experiences that are outside the scope of any other sailing craft design. On entend par voile libre un mât monté sur rotule (pied de mât) qui ne reste pas dans une position fixe pendant la navigation. La planche à voile peut être considérée comme une version plus petite d'un voilier, mais aussi comme une extension du surf. Tout d'abord, un jeune Anglais Peter Chilvers qui esquissa, au début des années 1960, une sorte d'ancêtre de la planche à voile. Au mois de mai 1964, en Pennsylvanie, un Américain, Newman Darby, installe un mât et une voile sur une planche qui tient plus de la porte que de la planche de surf. Sa planche mesure trois mètres de long pour 90 centimètres de large et possède un mât et une rotule qui malheureusement ne peut s'orienter que latéralement et se trouve dans le dos du pratiquant. Pendant deux ans, il va peaufiner son invention mais ne saura convaincre les investisseurs. En janvier 1965, un français, Serge Loiselot, dépose une demande de brevet pour le « plateau à voile » : flotteur caisson individuel plat de très faible densité aux contours ovoïdes sans arête vive, muni d'une quille-gouverne et d'un mât vertical supportant un mât horizontal de 1 mètre entre lesquels une voile triangulaire est tendue.
