Product Description
This book is a must-have gift for anyone interested in skiing or in the art of the poster.Organized by country, it features the world's foremost winter sport by drawing on an unparalleled collection of 800 vintage posters and paintings.Amassed by Mason Beekley over a lifetime dedicated to the celebration of all things skiing, the collection is now housed at the Mammoth Ski Museum in California and open to the public. In the 1910s and 1920s, skiing became the "in" thing among the young and the fashionable, who made such glamorous resorts like St. Moritz, Chamonix, and Garmisch famous.Like car racing, skiing was one of the sports that defined the twentieth-century's notion of the modern. It combined fast-paced action with the need to appear in stylish, sporty yet appropriate attire.Since it took place away from everyday urban life in remote and breathtaking mountain locations, it also combined the romance of travel with the stylishness of après-ski social life and ski chalet rusticity. Even in the steamship era, skiing quickly jumped the Atlantic and spawned such now famous ski resorts such as Vermont's Stowe, Colorado's Aspen, and Canada's Banff and Whistler (all featured here in their pre-war glamour). The book is rounded out by chapters on the contemporary skiing scene and on skiing fashion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hockey+magic+book= great book
I think the book Ice Magic was a great book because hockey and magic in one book is an extremely smart idea. My three favorite things are hockey and magic and reading, so I knew the book Ice Magic was right for me just by looking at the title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ice Magic
Ice Magic is a book about Pie Pennelli who plays hockey, but has oversized skates. Terry Mason is his other problem because when he falls on the ice, and misses a play Terry Mason always yells at him. His nieghbors found this toy hockey that they think is magic because whenever they play the game that is what happens in Pie's real game the next day. Terry teases Pie about how they think that the toy hockey game is magic. In the last couple of toy hockey games bad things are going to happen to Pie. In his last game of the season Pie's neighbors warn him that the second period is going to be bad. In the second period Pie's skates fall apart, and Terry's cat jumps onto the ice in the second period. When Pie's neighbors found the toy hockey game, a note was attached to it that said," Beware what happens on a real rink first, Repeats here not, for fate, Promises that, as true as bubbles burst, The magic will dissipate" which that whatever happens on a real rink first it will happen on this rink too, and then the magic will be gone. When Terry came over tothe twins house he brought his cat and the cat jumped onto the toy hockey game, and that was the sign that the magic was now gone. by Aaron Havard

3-0 out of 5 stars This is not one of Christopher's better books
This sports book by the prolific Christopher is a bit unusual in that it combines action in hockey with the uncertainty of magic. Pie Pennelli is a young hockey player with a problem; his skates are too large, slowing him down on the ice. His brother was a hockey player so he is wearing the skates that his brother used. Jody and Jolie are his friends and they have an indoor hockey game that is unusual. When they play it, the events of their game become the actual events of Pie's game.
While Pie has some moments on the ice, he also fails on occasion, facts always pointed out by his teammate Terry.Over time, the problems between Pie and Terry boil over, but they eventually patch things up and begin to play together outside the hockey arena. When Terry's cat wanders out on the ice during a game and then jumps on the indoor game, the magic spell is broken and there is no longer a correlation between what happens in the indoor game and on the ice.
This is not one of the better sports books by Matt Christopher; it is convoluted and occasionally disjointed. The combination of magic and hockey is not well integrated; everything is closed up at the end in a sudden manner without a climactic event or situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars magic of ice
My name is Greg I read a book call Ice Magicit was about hockey and kid name pie and hell like magic .he though a hockey game was magic. Also what happen in his toy game will happen in pie hockey game .A kid on pie team all ways made fun of him .his team was ok but they lost a of gameby one point .at the end of the book the kid that would make fun of hi becomes his friend. I like this book because it about hockey and I like to play hockey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Young Reader Alert
Dan, 6th grader in Maine

Matt Christopher's Ice Magic is about Pie Pennelli and a magic hockey game his friends find in there basement.
This is a exciting book that i would recommend to kids 8 to 10.I give this book 3 stars because I think it is for younger readers. It was still a pretty good book to read, but it was a very easy book to read.
Iwould read another one ofMatt Christophers books butI would look for a more challenging book from this author. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very frustrating
I am currently reading this book with my son and it is extremely frustrating. Mr. Christopher's understanding of the sport of hockey is appalling. The entire central conflict of the book revolves around the protagonist's desire to make and stay on the team's starting lineup. Mr. Christopher makes the so-colossal-it's-unbelievable blunder of presuming that a starting lineup in hockey is the same as a starting lineup in baseball (a sport that Mr. Christopher actually had a good knowledge of) and that just as one baseball player will play center field or shortstop for an entire game, so too will one hockey player play left wing or center for an entire game. And when I say an entire game, please understand that I mean an ENTIRE game. Without rest. Anyone with even the most tenuous understanding of the game of hockey knows that this is not the case, and that teams continuously switch up 3 or 4 revolving lines in shifts during play. The idea of one player (besides the goalie, obviously) staying on the ice for an entire game, as players routinely do in this book, is so ridiculous that it has ruined all enjoyment of the book for both me and my son (who, at 5 years old, already knows more about the game of hockey than Mr. Christopher ever did, it seems).

And don't even get me started on his play-by-play descriptions, which never approach capturing the feel of an actual game of hockey!

Extremely, extremely frustrating.

4-0 out of 5 stars penalty shot
great book by matt christopher. once again shows a bit of what reality can be like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey It's Penlty Shot
Do you think sports are cool? You will change your mind when you read Matt Christopher's Penalty shot. This book is about a boy named Jeff and his team. They start as a team that loses every game and think their very bad.
The next year they finally win a game. They also go all the way to the championship game. They win the championship game. It shows that 1 team thinks there bad then they will be bad if they think there good they will be good. And accomplished great goals for the team.
This book is a book that is just right for you. Some other books that Matt Christopher he wrote are Bike rally, Soccer scoop, Miracle at the plate, and The Brush `Iim back pitch. This book reminds me of me and when I play hockey. I thought I was bad
But know I am great. The thing I do not like is that he doesn't use many
Vocabulary words like when you are looking for a better word.
This book not that valuable but it is a very good book. The setting is mostly in the hockey arena. Would you like to play hockey? It is a great sport.
Even though the hockey team won the championship doesn't
mean that they will win next year. What do you think? Will they win next year or not. This book is a great book. If you like sports then read Matt Christopher's wonderful series of books.
This book will change your mind about sports.

4-0 out of 5 stars Penalty Shot
Would you like to play hockey and then get bumped off the team? This happens in Matt Christopher's story Penalty Shot.A person named Jeff was a hockey player, he got bumped off the team last year.He is trying out for the team again this year.Wait till you see what happens!I thought this was a great book, because I love hockey!I think anyone would like this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost Worthless
This book is pretty much worthless as a "guide" to anything. The front cover says: "Your Guide to Jumping, ...(etc.)."Yeah right - jumping is first in the list and there is a grand total of senventeen sentences on jumping, all of which could be deduced from watching one ski jumper jump once. Some of the pictures are okay, but if you want to learn anything about skiing, forget this "guide."National Geographic and Pamela Pollack should be ashamed of producing such a worthless and deceiving book on "Extreme Sports."The only thing extreme about this book is how bad it is. ...
