Product Description
Do you know…

  • Which exercises cause unnecessary wear and tear on your body?
  • What to do during the first critical few seconds following a sports injury?
  • When an off-the-rack arch support can be as effective as a $200 custom-made orthotic device?
  • How to keep in condition during rehabilitation?
Dr. Allan Levy knows. As team doctor for the New York Giants football team, he has treated every kind of sports injury there is, from strains and sprains to more serious tears and fractures. In Sports Injury Handbook, he shares his vast practical knowledge of sports medicine with recreational athletes who want to keep in shape, while minimizing aches, pains, and injuries. For ease of use, the main part of the guide is organized by body part and sport. To find out why, for example, your knee is sore and how to treat it, simply turn to the knee chapter. Then learn how to avoid further risk of knee injuries in sports-specific chapters on aerobics, jogging, tennis, skiing, basketball, and many more. Peppered with firsthand stories and anecdotes from professional sports, the Sports Injury Handbook is an entertaining, informative guide to the latest methods of injury prevention and treatment. In it, you’ll discover:
  • The conditioning, nutrition, and strength training techniques professional athletes use to stay in top physical shape
  • Easy, step-by-step rehabilitative exercises you can perform at home
  • Special precautions for women, children, and older athletes

3-0 out of 5 stars yeah it's okay
This book is a step up from common sense in that it has a few more details when dealing with certain injured body parts. But unless you're going to be in the middle of nowhere doing extreme sports, you probably don't need this book.If you hurt yourself, the procedure is pretty much the same for everything: rest and professional help when you need it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Weird in Spots...
I just got this book today. It's a great idea, a sports injury handbook organized by bodypart **and** sport, but right off the bat, while browsing, I notice a few oddities: on page 221, Dr. Levy claims "exercise machines require you to lift too much weight," which is weird because one can certainly adjust the resistance on most any exercise machine out there -- and he makes that statement while advising free weights!Any bodybuilder or powerlifter knows that it is typically harder to use free weights than a machine: for example, dumbbell curls are much harder than machine biceps curls at the same weight. Also, on page 17 there is an illustration of the behind-the-neck pull-up, which is potentially more dangerous for some people than the regular front-of-the-neck type of pull-up.That's a very strange thing to see in a book on sports injuries!Though it's not exactly a dangerous movement, it does place the rotator cuff at greater risk of injury, especially for people who might have weak muscles and tendons there to begin with. The regular pull-up works the same muscles just as well, but without that slightly higher risk of injury.

I hope I don't find any other strange advice or illustrations in this book....

4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate to the athlete
I have not read this book, but the reviews indicate it is for the current athlete with an injury. One reviewer unfairly slammed Marilyn Moffat's book since it was not right for him.I read and evaluated her Physical Therapy book from the library as a guide for my 84 year old father. He was a super fit elderly sculler who wore out his beach volleyball playing granddaughters double sculling for 2 hours at a shot, and was in the hospital for 14 months recovering from surgery to reduce intracranial bleeding, which was followed by seizures, pneumonia, and kidney failure. He essentially woke up a year later a live but terribly weak shadow of himself. He needs rehabilitation from, literally zero strength. He is learning to walk, talk, and eat, and more. He's gone from feeling like 40 to feeling like a hundred, but with no long slide of good memories.Very discouraging. Her book will help me start him back to a pleasant final years, from a zero base. I will buy that book to help him.I may be able to use this book for myself, but he could not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed . . .
An excellent book. At the age of 40 I pay for my active lifestyle with some aches and pains; this book is helping me live pain free. Unlike many PT type books, Levy is specific with his advice, not making you waste your time on dozens of stretches and exercises. He'll lead you directly to what you need to know to fix the problem. Other books seem shy about recommending specific exercises for specific problems; Levy's not. I ordered several of these types of books at once and eventually resold all the others. This is the one I kept.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL MATERIAL ON FITNESS &SPORTS INJURIES
Alan Levy has done a fantastic job in putting together so much in one book. It has nearly everything an athlete requires to not only stay in shape but also treating all kinds of injuries from little niggles to thosethat need surgery. And its all been bonded together in a very organized andmethodical manner.

To begin with Dr. Levy emphasizes the importance ofwarming up and stretching before and after workouts and shows how to dothis. Next, he explains about nutrition for athletes. After that he laysout the benefits of and what it really means to stay healthy. This isfollowed by First-Aid for sports.

Starting with the fifth chapter heprovides detailed information about what to know about the various parts ofthe body, their intricacies, and how they areused in sports and preciselywhat occurs with them when we feel pain or discomfort. For example, chapter10 is about the Thigh and Hip, Chapter 6for the Shoulder, and so on. Inaddition, he suggests various ways of diagnosing injuries correctly and howbest to treat them. Whether an economical ready-made arch support willwork, or one must see a qualified physician for a particular problem, Dr.Levy seems one not to miss a trick.

Then there is a chapter each on aspecific sport and the most likely injuries to take place in every one ofthose and what all can be done to prevent them but if they do happen, thenhow to treat them. From Baseball to Running, Golf to Skiing, it haseverything.

At the end he also suggests what to look for in a SportsSpecialist.

Its only drawback is that understanding some of the materialcan be a daunting task as the lay person does not possess the expertise ofDr. Levy in Sportsmedicine.

And last but not the least, my kneeailment got cured courtesy of following the treatment plan outlined in theSports Injury Handbook. ... Read more

Product Description
Here is one of the first books specifically geared for legal practitioners involved in liability arising out of participation in professional and amateur athletics. In a lively and highly readable manner, Yasser applies tort law principles to a wide variety of sports cases--from such publicized cases as Dale Hackbart v. "Boobie" Clark, Rudy Tomjanovich v. The Los Angeles Lakers, and Bill Walton v. Dr. Cook to the more obscure such as Virgil v. Time Inc. and Spahn v. Julian Messner Inc. In each he expertly underscores relevant, useful information that can be used in daily practice. "The author, a torts professor and sports fan, examines in a sports setting such torts as negligence, products liability, and intentional interference with contractual relations. In each chapter, Professor Yasser prints edited versions of the landmark sports cases, takes an in-depth look at one major legal issue, and provides a broad summary of the law and a bibliography." Product Description
Exploring the complex issues of class and gender relations, community building, and sport reform, "For the Love of the Game" analyses how local culture shapes the meanings of sport and examines the tensions that exist when athletes and sports teams become important symbols for the community. Nancy Bouchier traces the increasing importance of amateur sport to Woodstock and Ingersoll, two small nineteenth-century Ontario towns, revealing its intricate ties to urban boosterism and middle-class culture. Focusing on civic holiday celebrations, the establishment of organized clubs for cricket, baseball, and lacrosse, and the rise of spirited urban sports rivalries, Bouchier shows that small town interest in sports was much more than a pale imitation of the sporting life of Canada's major urban centres. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I was there
David Prouty hit real close to the bone in this treatise on amateur sports. I was a fly on the wall for nearly all of this and know all of the personalities first hand. He was basically the leader of chlldren all playing at their own version of Lord of the Flies. The egos, power struggles and inflated levels of self importance that many of the people he had to deal with would even be beyond the capabilities of a Jack Welch to master. The Amazon review at the lead of this is indeed totally inaccurate. Mr. Prouty was an honest, talented, imaginative and flexible leader with very strong principles that only bent when they needed even more flexibility just to keep peace amongst the "children."

5-0 out of 5 stars In Spite of US
The review printed by Amazon that accompanies the advert for the book is clearly written by someone who has never worked in the amateur sports arena as Dave did. There are many of us who work as paid staff or as a professional/volunteer (someone who does not get paid but is expected to perform as if he/she did and maintain another career and family life at the same time)in a similar role to that of Dave with members of a Governing Body whose motives are either self preservation because it looks good on a CV or who, in spite of their considerable talents, spend their time fighting for their personal little issues or simply micro-manage. The book should be compulsary reading for anyone wanting to join or be elected to a sports NGB or who is simply going through the motions as a Board member.
Fortunately sport is changing, albeit slowly because its 'customers' are more demanding and more enlightened now than 20 years ago - they are less prepared to be seen as somewhere down the pecking order of priorities after the elected officers and in some cases staff too.
For anyone who wants an emotional journey in this amateur sports world which still exists - told in an honest but dramatic way (which makes it easy reading) then this is the book - it is also worthy of re-printing and free distribution in the wider context of organisational change and governance/management issues. ... 14. Rowing in England: A Social History : The Amateur Debate (International Studies in the History of Sport)

list price: US$49.95
Isbn: 0719026059

Editorial Review

Product Description
Sport is a major social phenomenon of this century with political, cultural, economic, spiritual and aesthetic dimensions. Rowing, a minority sport compared with some, had managed to erect two controlling bodies by 1890, when sports and games began to be more organized. This organization was needed as an increasing number of people had more time to enjoy games and the greater ease of travel reinforced the need for everybody to accept agreed rules for whatever game it might be. This study traces the sport's influences, its champions, and the history of the amateur-versus-professional debate. A belief in the virtues of amateurism and of the need to play a game for its own sake, the author argues, meant that professionalism was to be avoided because victory became its own reward and the means often used - fouling and cheating - were to be resisted. ...
