A terrific follow up on the original book; "Growing Old is Not For Sissies" - highly recommend both

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta love the [...] kicking old farts
As a 50 year old runner and biker, I loved this book. I am now firmly entrenched in middle age and need the occasional inspiration to get out on the trails of Houston especially during the brutally hot summers. This book is full of what I need. A beautifully photographed and written book portraying active seniors competing and loving life, some well into their 90s. Truly amazing. The book is generally formatted with a picture and a few paragraphs written about and in some cases by these special people. By personal favorite is 83 year old surfer "Woody" Brown pictured with his 6 year old son Woody Jr. (Yep.... do the math) A copy of their picture is posted on my refrigerator for those days I hesitate to lace up the running shoes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Nutrition
As much as people dont think that nutrition is important to the serious athlete, they are wrong. One of the keys unlocking your potential is what you put into your body. Before i had read this book, i had a few ideas/thoeries about what i put into my body and what foods i should eat and this book backed my ideas and gave me new ones. This book is one of my favorites, and serious athletes should follow it to a T.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals for Success
Dr. Benardot's text, Nutrition for Serious Athletes, is essential for both coach and athlete. It lays out in clear and precise fashion what is required, with regard to nurtition, for athletic success. Crucial topics, for athletic success, that are comprehensively discussed include: propernutrition, hydration, supplements, meals for anaerobic and aerobicactivities, and timing of meals. What also adds to the immense value of thetext is the massive index of food sources of essential nutrients located atthe end of the book. If you want to achieve your best athletic results,i.e., to maximize and actualize your true athletic potential, then thistext is for you. It will not only show you how to fuel your body for theparticular athletic you are training for and competing in, but also helpyou to understand why you should be fueling your body in that particularmaner. All in all, this is an excellant text for the athlete, coach, oreven the individual who just wants to have a clear understanding of propernutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars nutrtion for serious athletes
Best book I've read for the "semi serious" athlete. Although I don't compete anymore, I'm 74, I thought the info. for nourishing food and mealsvery helpful to me .Also,I never realizedthat hydratingafter exercise was also important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundametals for Sucess
Dan Benardot's book 'Nutrition for Serious Athletes' is a must for the coach or athltete who desires to cover every base when it comes to athletic performance. Fundamental topics discussed include proper nutrition, hydration, supplements, timming of meals, good diets/bad diets, and sportspecific diets. But what also adds to the immense value of Dan Benardot'sbook is the excellant index of meal plans, and nutritional values offoods.

What is of great importance in gaining knowledge is the issueof authority. It is something that is very important to me, for there aremany individuals who claim to actually know something about athleticperformance, yet they lack proper training and education. It is clear thatDan Benardot is not one of those individuals. Not only does he have PhD andRD distinction, but the text is also clear, logical, insightful and basedon scientific evidence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide for amateurs who needs an edge!
In this short but packed book, the author clearly spells out how plyometrics differ from other traditional categories of excercises such as plain weight lifting, interval training or endurance aerobic trainings. Also, in a short account, he clearly explains the benefits and possible risks of plyometric excercises. It was intuitive enough for me to put a heavy emphasis on plyometric training in my weekly routine. I could understand how each specific movements will benefit my performance. I am an amateur triathlete with a full course marathon record of 3:35.

Now the shortcomings. Some of the illustrated pictures don't adequately give a novice enough information on how to correctly carry out the specific moves. Maybe a movie clip, and slow motion scenes would have captured the entire move much better, but I think I am pushing it here. Anyway, I would have loved a bit more intermediate pictures for complex movements. Also, on the pictures, vector force arrows could have improved this book. Arrows could have shown exactly the direction, angle of movements.

Overall, quite good sets of plyometric exercises are covered in this book for some very popular sports.

3-0 out of 5 stars Learned some stuff
I learned some things from this book and its a good referance for simple plyometrics. Though some of the pictures are not very clear. A decent porduct for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners

4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
The good thing about this book is that it lays out a very rational plan for speed improvement with pre-testing and needs evaluation. The organization of the workouts is a little complicated, though, leaving the reader to constantly refer to separate tables in different parts of the book. Some of the form exercises are pretty dated as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great information but not quite complete.
I purchased this book to brush up on speed training and the latest techniques so I could train my son and some soccer teamates.I have done speed training myself years ago and was familiar with the methods. This book cuts out the fluff and tells you exactly what to do and why. The author does a good job of explaining how to apply the training to younger athletes and at what age each technique is appropriate. The step by step training course outlined is terrific. My only complaint is that not enough emphasis is put on sprintng technique/posture and how to improve it.My experience has been that poor technique/posture is often the biggest problem for young athletes and luckily I already knew quite a bit about technique. A few more photos and details on proper sprinting technique would really help.Overall, the book is very good and we are achieving great results using the workouts.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a parent and age group coach
Eleven of my age group soccer kids completed the 30 workouts in this book in ten weeks. After seeing the improvement in acceleration and speed, the other 8 team members and their parents are sorry they didn't join in. The 30 workouts alone are worth the price of the book. You don't need a sports science background. If you are looking for a "just do-it" approach that improves speed in short sprints, this book is for you.The book cuts to the chase. There is no need to dig out anything. Everything that is included is important and the program works.

Reviewer: George R. Colfer, PhD.

After reading two mixed reviews from 2002 and 2004, I decided to read and review this book.Considering who the book was written for (i.e., young athletes), I would recommend it as a Resource and Guide for Speed Improvement. No book is ever perfect for all audiences regardless of size, length or type. When I see a title for "young athletes," I usually hold my breath as most imitate what works only for highly skilled athletes. The first thing I liked about the book was the introduction including "How to use the book" (pg. 11) and Chapter 1, which offers assessment to determine readiness for certain components of the workouts.Another example was regarding Plyometrics (pg. 90) where the author states a leg strength requirement and who by age level should avoid plyometrics, although I would rather see this at the beginning of the section as many youngsters "do" and don't read.Dr. Dintiman is very knowledgeable and also proven in the area of speed and running improvement. He has a much higher level book now in it's 3rd or 4th printing.Speed Improvement for Young Athletes is readable and follows a "how to do it" approach without a lot of "hype."My experience with speed is that it first requires self-motivation.There is a lot of material and equipment necessary which is why I think a youngster following this program would need the guidance of a coach, very knowledgeable parent or as part of a camp or clinic-type setting. The information and programs are proven to be effective with no doubt.Implementing them from reading about them may require some assistance as Dr. Dintiman mentions in the introduction (pg. 11-#1).Speed endurance is a relatively new term and is well covered in Chapter 7, but a more complete definition may be helpful. In the next edition, I would recommend updating some of the strength training photographs and I would find an index at the end to be very helpful. However, these do not detract from the content and program construction of the book (i.e., the 30 workouts), which achieves the author's purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Exercise Physiologist
Dr. Dintiman, an international authority on speed improvement, has produced a much needed text which offers excellent instruction on how to improve sport specific sprinting speed. What makes this book unique is that it is the first text specifically geared to the young athlete. The concepts in the text are based on internationally accepted research and proven instructional methods. The assessment program offered by the author is finely tuned to specifically uncover the young athlete's strengths and weaknesses. This allows valuable training time to be focused on specific points of identified weaknesses.Speed Improvement For Young Athletes: How To Sprint Faster In Your Sport In 30 Workouts, is a must purchase for any coach, parent, or individual who desires to produce a faster and quicker young athlete. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great exercises to work on between lessons
This book gives you ideas on things to work on between your lessons. If you tried one every couple of weeks until you mastered it both you and your horse would be much better by the end of the year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Photos!
This book is very easy to read and the photos really help get the ideas accross.I bought this book for a friend who is a beginner rider to help her when she rides at home without help.It is a great way to remember lessons when you are riding on your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Training / TeachingTool
This book gives many of the "basics" of training and riding.I recommend it to my students and we work on all of the exercises.Leslie Webb gives great explanations and many pictures that show the correct and wrong way to do the movements. This book is a great tool to develop a working partnership with your horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Build a Better Athlete
Webb's book is a necessary read for any individual seriously involved in horsemanship. Her gymnastic exercises are both concise and effective.
Her insight and discipline are contagious and makes you want to ride better and both help and support the horse. While I own plenty of Dressage Books, this is THE book to go to in order to really make it happen.Kudos to both Webb and Practical Horseman Magazine for putting this series together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected - been there done that.
I have a ton of books and unfortunately, this isn't what I expected.Though the exercises are well illustrated and clearly defined, I was looking for a really good "fitness" book for my well trained animals! I wanted something different, unique. All of theses exercises can be found in any well written dressage book. ... Read more

Product Description
Jackie is known throughout the world as the best female athlete ever - the winner of six Olympic medals, three of them gold; the current world-record holder in the heptathlon (the women's version of the male decathlon); the one-time world-record holder in the long jump; and an All-America basketball player. She grew up in East St. Louis in a house "little more than wallpaper and sticks". Her parents were poor teenagers when they married. She made her first long-jump pit in her backyard from borrowed playground sand. One of her first performances went unrecorded because of the color of her skin. Yet Jackie not only had an innate ability to conquer speed and distance, but possessed an irrepressible personality and a deep, unshakable love of sport. As she harnessed her talents, Jackie began an amazing string of multisport successes. In the midst of it all, she would try to hold her family together after her mother's tragic early death (Mary was only 37), and face her own devastating grief. As she climbed the dizzying heights of international and Olympic competition, she would face relentless media attention that escalated when she married Bob Kersee, her enormously successful - and controversial - coach. As she reached her profession's peak, she would battle life-threatening asthma, unfounded accusations of drug-induced performance enhancement, and recurring injuries. Ultimately, she would unite her experience and determination to achieve the most meaningful victories of all - those that shape and build lives beyond the field.Amazon.com Review
The best sports stories are about overcoming overwhelmingodds, confronting adversity, and--with a magical combination ofskill, will, impossibly hard work, and determination--beating back theobstacles and triumphing with grace. It's no surprise, then, thatJackie Joyner-Kersee, multi-Olympic champion, All-American basketballstar, and all-around inspiration and role model would include"Grace" in the title of her stirring autobiography; throughher long careers, she has been both its beneficiary and itsembodiment. Her journey from the poverty of East St. Louis tointernational fame and accomplishment is a marvelous tale of courageand conviction, which she movingly relates with passion, humor, honesty, and, of course, grace. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart-filled Story of Triumph
Jackie Joyner-Kersee elaborately describes the struggles and obstacles that she had to overcome to become a successful and outstanding athlete and person. Her book is filled with emotions that the reader can intially relate to. Her life was filled with adversity and proves that a strong and self-determined person can triumph regardless of depressing and self-destructing obstacles that may stand in your way. Jackie, who is portrayed through the media to be "Superwoman" is really more human and down to the earth than most of the world. Life for Jackie was not always "peaches and cream." She was born and raised in East St. Louis, which was not known as a very safe place at the time. A reporter once suggested to Jackie that she should not tell people where she was from cause it might destroy her image. This event, however, made Jackie appreciate her hometown even more. You cannot put into words why this woman is thought of as superb. She went from rock bottom to soaring to the unlimited top. With the help of this book, Jackie's title as "The World's Greatest Female Athlete" has been justified.

Unlike many celebrity bios that center around events, primarily ones that reflect well on the author,Jackie's book is people-centered and equally honest about her struggles aswell as her triumphs. She writes with love and admiration about many peoplewho have touched her life both in big and small ways. It is not hard to seewhy Jackie became the woman and athlete that she is. This book could havejust as easily been titled "The World's Greatest Role Model for YoungPeople." ... Read more

Product Description
"It is a common experience that a problem difficult at night is resolved in the morning after the committee of sleep has worked on it." --John SteinbeckScientific research confirms what people have always known: answers, ideas, and inspiration do come to us in dreams. Harvard psychologist and world-renowned dream specialist Deirdre Barrett, Ph.D., offers this rich collection of examples of how the world's most creative practitioners in art, music, film, science, literature and other fields have used the revelations of their dream life to inform their work.Dr. Barrett offers insights showing us how to encourage lucid, meaningful dreaming, and how to apply the meanings of our dreams to solving problems--from the everyday to the extraordinary. This is the stuff dreams are made of. In the visual arts, Jasper Johns couldn't find his unique artistic vision until he dreamed it in the form of a large American flag. Salvador Dali and his colleagues built the startling new genre of surrealism out of dreams. Kubla Kahn dreamed the design for his stately pleasure dome; thousands of years later, Lucy Davis, chief architect at a major firm, continues the tradition of dreaming designs into life in her extraordinary buildings.Film is a fertile avenue for dreams: "Twice I have transferred dreams to film exactly as I had dreamed them," confides director Ingmar Bergman, as have Federico Fellini, Orson Welles, Akira Kurosawa, Robert Altman, and John Sayles. From Mary Shelley's terrible nightmare, which became Frankenstein, to Stephen King's haunting dream as a little boy, which led to his first bestseller, countless writers have consulted the Committee. Musicians from Beethoven to Billy Joel and Paul McCartney have whistled the Committee's tunes. In science, physiologist Otto Loewi dreamed the medical experiment that earned him the Nobel Prize. In sports, Marion Jones dreamed she'd broken a world record, then brought the dream to life. Gandhi translated his dream of resistance into a movement that changed the world. Since Freud, we take it for granted that our dreams reflect our past. In The Committee of Sleep, Barrett reveals how dreams can also tell us about our future potential--and how to reach it. Read this book, sleep on it, and see what transpires!Deirdre Barrett, Ph.D., is on the psychology faculty of Harvard Medical School. She is the author of the widely acclaimed The Pregnant Man: And Other Cases from A Hypnotherapist's Couch.Supernormla Stimuli, anf Waistland. She is Past President of both the International Association for the Study of Dreams and The Society for Psychological Hypnosis. She is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Dreaming, and has published numerous professional articles and chapters on dreams. Her commentary on dreams has been featured on NBC, Life Magazine, Self, and other national venues. She has lectured on dreams in the U.S., Russia, Kuwait, Israel, England, and Holland."This fascinating and balanced compendium is the first critical examination of the tricky subject of the role of dreams and dreaming in creative life--a question which has been pondered since antiquity. Dr. Barrett draws vividly and eloquently on the world's literature as well as her own clinical experience; one leaves this book with much more respect for sleep and dreaming."--Oliver Sacks, author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist From Mars ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Heavy Writing Style but Fascinating Information
Dreams can be valuable sources of ideas, creativity and solutions, as clearly demonstrated by Deirdre Barrett's book.Barrett covers how dreams have assisted writers, painters, architects, biologists and chemists, for example, in finding solutions to problems or by presenting new creative ideas. All the accounts and evidence presented in this book should convince any skeptic that dreams can be a rich vein to mine.I myself often come up with creative ideas when I am in the so-called hypnagogic state, that state on the border of sleeping and waking, when I awaken in the morning. My problem is that I am usually not prepared to capture my thoughts on pen and paper, and I later find myself remembering that I had a good idea but not remembering what it was.Barrett also explores the impact that dreamers' professions and cultures have in the types of dreams they have. For example, in cultures where dreams are accepted as sources of ideas or inspiration, they are more readily shared and acted on.

On the down side, although I can't quite put my finger on it, there is something about Barrett's writing style that made it somewhat difficult to get through the text, and I found that I was forcing myself to push through the text, feeling at times that I was more reading a menu of dream selections and their details rather than a story about the dreams and their dreamers.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT FOR WORKING WITH YOUR DREAMS
This book isn't a self-help book per se. It devotes most of the space to describing problem solving and creative dreams of historic and modern writers and scientist. But it has enough pages which outline how to incubate proberm-solving dreams yourself to make this easy and the famous examples are more inspiring than a whole book of the 'how-to' would be. Best book if you want to start getting practical help from your dream life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paperback of The Committee of Sleep due out by August 2010
This out of print book will be out in a high quality paperback under the IBSN 978-0-9828695-0-5 probably very late July. It's list price will be $19.99, with possible discounts. So, if you're a customer balking at the hardback resale prices, just check back under that IBSN. If you're a reseller, here's your heads up to drop that $145., so you're not stuck with them soon.
Obviously this isn't exactly a review but I couldn't think of another way to get the info onto this page and seen by these two groups of people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creativity and dreams!
This book brings together all the best accounts of dreams which have solved important waking life problems or inspired great art. It summarizes research on how often and what kinds of problems dreams are most helpful with. There are directions for incubating creative problem solving dreams which give the reader all clear information to get started making practical use of their own dreams. Well-written and entertaining reading. Recommended to anyone who's interested in dreams or in the creative process. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In and out of Uniform
"Athlete/Warrior" is filled with an excellent assortment of male and female cadets both in uniform and in sports attire. The locations are varied and interesting. The juxtaposing images add a great deal to the visual enjoyment of the book. Very well done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept Grounded by Static Poses
Anderson and Low are photographers who have earned their credentials in their craft. The concept of juxtaposing images of men and women in military training in US Military Academy, West Point, the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, US Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs in both their uniformed regalia and their sports outfits makes a good point: basic training is not dissimilar on many levels from athletic training for competition. It is the sport that comes through as well as the team spirit.

For this viewer the aspect that weakens the portfolio is the static sense to the images.Granted the photographers are not utilizing buff models to excite the viewer, this being more reportage than art, but the photographic choices tend to become bland in lighting and composition - traits not usually the case with these fine photographers. It feels as though shooting in military academies was under restraints as there is little of the potentially powerful erotic aspect of men and women preparing for careers in battle. It just feels a little hollow. Grady Harp, December 05

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift
When you buy a book like this as a gift for a West Point graduate you may wonder whether you have done the right thing... - and so I did.

The pictures are aesthetically pleasing. There is just enough of a homoerotic soupçon to make this a pleasing book for those who indulge in the body beautiful. Never mind that; what about the mind?

As a personal trainer, I've read countless training books, manuals, programs and other materials. This is a surprise gem.Well-written and informative.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
The author clearly makes the case for the need to cross train. He explains in a very concise manner how stability, balance and strength are all interrelated and they all affect your performance as an endurance athlete.

The suggested exercises are all well explained.

It would be nice if there were a checklist of suggested equipment for home use ("yoga mat, stability ball, resistance bands, 5 and 10 lb dumbells...") but this is a minor miss.

Unfortunately the book didn't include the ambition to DO said exercises. ;-) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Goal and the Glory
Never has there been a need greater than now for roll models, mentors, people just like you and me, who can show us how to overcome all of our adversities and become victorious in our goals. These are real people with moral character who show, by their everyday lives, that we can be champions also. I loved this book. Reading it made me a better person, wife, friend, and athlete. It challenged and inspired me. After reading it I accomplished the goal of a triathlon and I am 56 years old. Thank you Josh Davis for believing in yourself and allowing others to do the same. You and all of the athletes in your book are my hero's.

Marty Kaminsky paints a vivid picture of individuals who are true champions. These are the most inspirational stories I have read. The message, never let yourself be limited, is one everyone should believe in.The book is very well written - but then again, we've come to expect that from Mr. Kaminsky.I recommend this for all young sports fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Giving hope
Uncommon Champions is an engaging book that involves the reader in the lives of these champions who have struggled through adversity. These people exemplify success as shown not just through medals, but also in the satisfaction and pride in their lives. Each one succeeds not just for their own sense of achievement, but also in order to be able to give to others both inspiration and help in their personal quests. As a teacher I see this book as a wonderful tool to help students who are struggling with their own particular adversities to hold on to hope that they too will one day become uncommon champions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
This book is inspirational for young and old, athlete and non-athlete. Each chapter is a lesson in dedication and determination that is truely uncommon in today's world of multimillion dollar salaries and end zone celebrations. The real victories are found in the athletes themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring book for exceptional children and their parents
As a parent of a child who has endured extreme physical difficulties, it was wonderful to read these inspiring stories. They are written in a prose that is accessible to all readers, and convey the underlying spirit of people who have alsoovercome life's extreme challenges. Kids with disabilities, and those without them, will be exhilarated and moved when reading about the lives and experiences of these athletes. Many thanks to Mr. Kaminsky for producing this wonderful collection of true stories...

5-0 out of 5 stars Postive models for young adults
Uncommon Champions tells the stories of star athletes who have successfully grappled with eating disorders, drug addiction, cancer, racism, learning disabilities and more. I think it's important for youngpeople to read about role models who have suffered and come out the otherside, especially ones who seem as golden and invincible as top athletes. This book provides hope and inspiration. There is a shortage of rolemodels for our youth among today's elite athletes but the fifteen storieshere are proof that integrity and honor are not entirely missing from theplaying fields. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the story of a hot young player who should have been named, Adrian "TEAM PLAYER" Peterson!
Adrian Peterson looks like one of the toughest players in the NFL, but many people just might say he IS the toughest, especially if they saw the Minnesota Vikings go up against the Cleveland Browns during the season opener in 2009. He was pumping so hard during the game that by the time half time rolled around, he was in need of medical attention. The Vikings' star running back was "suffering from the heat and from running so hard," the team doc was pumping fluids in one arm while the trainer was trying to stop the flow of blood on the other.Adrian was some tough cookie.Amazingly he went on to finish the game.Brett Favre was stunned and claimed, "I have never played with a running back like that."And he probably never will again.

Born to an athletic family, Adrian Lewis Peterson's father dubbed him AD, which stood for All Day.He was like the Energizer Bunny and just wouldn't stop.He was up and running "all day."His beloved brother Brian was mowed down by a drunk driver and his "death crushed Brian."With this horrifying loss in his life he was more determined than ever to fill the void left in his life by Brian's death and the subsequent imprisonment of his father for drug-related charges. It seemed like misfortune was following Adrian, but he persevered. In high school his "blazing speed as a running back" began to wow everyone who saw him run.In this book you will learn about how colleges began to notice him, why he chose to play with the Sooners, you'll learn about the injuries that plagued him, why the NFL was hesitant to sign him in the first draft, you'll grieve with him at the tragic murder of his half-brother Chris Paris, and much more!

This is the story of a hot young player who should have been named, Adrian "TEAM PLAYER" Peterson. From the first page to the last, this book spells action. The book is peppered with full color photographs, most of them action oriented.Scattered sidebars and captions add a lot of information to the book. The seasoned young football fan will know the meaning of words such as "playoff," but for those who don't these words, highlighted in bold purple in the text, are explained in the glossary.I liked the easy, highly readable flow of this book, a book that will thrill any budding football fan.In the back of the book is a section on"Selected Career Highlights," an index, the glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore. ...
