Product Description

While drug and supplement use has increased substantially in recent years, there is a lack of firm understanding about how these substances can affect health and exercise. With Sport and Exercise Pharmacology, physicians and sports medicine specialists will learn how various commonly used drugs and supplements can affect exercise performance in their patients and athletes. Practical guidelines are offered so that professionals can closely monitor and circumvent adverse reactions to drug therapies.

But what are the effects of exercise on the drug itself? This issue is also explored in this valuable reference that covers a wide range of substances including supplements and over-the-counter, prescription, and social drugs, and highlights both sports medicine and clinical medicine issues. The role of exercise in actually preventing the need for drugs is a key message of the reference and a central reason that author Stan Reents, PharmD, has created the book.

With this essential resource, you will learn how drugs affect physical activities and how exercise can change the effects of drugs. Among the issues explored in Sport and Exercise Pharmacology are the following:

- How can drug therapy treat and prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm?

- What is the impact of athletes' use of analgesics?

- Lovastatin is known to be associated with muscle injury—does this necessarily mean that a person taking this lipid-lowering drug should not lift weights?

- Physicians often prescribe aerobic exercise to help lower blood pressure, but they also may prescribe diuretics—should a person taking a diuretic always avoid playing tennis on a hot day?

- Under what circumstances may creatine, androstenedione, and DHEA supplementation actually help performance, and when is it a waste of money?

- For what kinds of exercise does caffeine appear to boost performance? Are there any sporting events for which alcohol appears not to have a deleterious effect?

- How can exercise reduce the need for drug therapy for many chronic medical conditions?

The book covers cardiopulmonary agents, hormonal agents (including growth hormone, anabolic steroids, and erythropoietin), metabolic agents (including creatine, NSAIDS, and nutritional supplements), and socially used drugs. The text concludes with an examination of how exercise can be used as a preventive measure in reducing a patient's need for drug therapy.

Case studies at the beginning of each chapter provide real-world examples of the interactions between drugs and exercise. A closing bibliography summarizes dozens of resources on drugs and exercise.

This practical reference is your best resource to better understanding the varied and dynamic interactions between exercise and pharmacology, including the pivotal role that regular exercise plays in reducing the need for some drug therapies. This book will prove invaluable to any health professional whose clients exercise or engage in sports, and to any trainer, therapist, or fitness expert whose clients use supplements, banned substances, or prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sport and Exercise Pharmacology
As someone who has studied drug therapy for nearly 30 years, I highly recommend this book.It is concise and well-written and provides the practioner, therapist, and sports enthusiast with important information on medication use and exercise.

I recently read a review in a well-respected journal about drug therapy.Their review summarized this book better than I could as, "reasonably priced and highly recommended for sports clinicans and therapists."

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise Review of Drug Effects on Exercise
A long awaited and comprehensive reference, Dr. Reents' book covers a wide range of pharmacological agents (prescription and OTC drugs, nutritional supplements, and herbal products), from caffeine in coffee to injectable derivatives of testosterone and androstendione, and their effects on general health, exercise physiology, and atheletic performance. Written for health care professionals, consumers, professional atheletes, and personal trainers, this book will also be a valuable reference for high school and college atheletic coaches wanting accurate information to help young atheletes understand the potential benefits and/or harm these agents may produce as they mature into adulthood.

Of special interest are case studies that describe potential real-life situations, information on what substances are banned by various professional atheletic organizations (e.g., NCAA, USOC), and advice to physicians on counseling atheletes taking prescription medications for legitimate medical conditions. The book contains timely examples of products currently on the market and includes definitions for many "scientific" terms and concepts.

While there is no index (which made finding information on a specific drug or nutritional supplement difficult), the table of contents contians significant detail so as to make locating general topics easy, e.g., the effects of creatine supplements. Nevertheless, Dr. Reents' efforts are to be applauded. This book should be on every atheletic coach's list of "must read" references.

Dr. Stan Reents has to be comended on shedding light on this subject of growing interest. Not only he discusses the effect of commonly used drugs in clincal practice on exercise but he also brings forth the current sceintific evidence on 'performance inhancing' drugs and supplements. The information is of great value to any clincian and sports trainer in helping to seperate the myth from the facts in this rapidly expanding area of supplementation for exericse performance.

Product Description

Since the dawn of athletic competition during the original Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, athletes, as well as their coaches and trainers, have been finding innovative ways to gain an edge on their competition. Some of those performance-enhancement methods have been within the accepted rules while other methods skirt the gray area between being within the rules and not, while still other methods break the established rules. In modern times, doping - the use of performance-enhancing drugs - has been one method athletes and their trainers have used to beat their competition. The history of sports doping during the modern era can be traced through the events and scandals of the times in which the athletes lived. From the use of amphetamines and other stimulants in the early 20th century, to the use of testosterone and steroids by both the USSR and the United States during Cold War-era Olympics games, to blood doping and EPO, to designer drugs, the history of doping in sports closely follows the medical and technological advances of our times. In the early 21st century, the possibility of genetically engineered athletes looms. The story of doping in sports over the last century offers clues to where the battle over performance enhancement will be fought in the years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compulsory reading
This book is compulsory reading for those who have an interest in sport and not just about the the drug scandals that have plagued sporting contests ever since the ancient Olympic Games. This is an easy-to-read factual account of many of the highlights (and lowlights)of doping scandals in sport. The book however goes beyond the historical facts and points to the prospect of Gene Doping, a scenario that should concern everyone not just sporting folk. If drugs don't kill sport as we know it then perhaps Genetic Doping may be the last straw. Readers are left to ponder the possibilities!

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking Overview
Dan has created a must-read for anyone interested in the topic of doping in sport. It's easy to get caught up in the doping scandal of the moment, whether it's Marion Jones, or Roger Clemens, or Floyd Landis.Dan provides much-needed perspective, by giving us more than 100 years of doping history. With this perspective, we can see that no decade in the modern era lacks a doping scandal and no sport is immune from doping.

The book should be mandatory reading for every media talking head.Too often, we take the most recent doping story du jour, and attack the alleged doper as single-handedly corrupting our youth and destroying sport as we know it.Dan points out a bigger truth: doping is out there, every athlete has the opportunity to dope, and we fail to understand the problem if we focus on demonizing whatever athlete is currently connected with doping in the headlines.

In order for Dan to give us this kind of 50,000 foot view, he's had to keep each of his doping stories short and to the point.Often, I found this frustrating -- just as Dan got me hooked on one doping story, he'd move on to another. Many of these stories deserve their own books (and quite a few DO have their own books), but I think Dan's book serves a different purpose. It reminds us that these stories are NOT unique, that doping is now woven into the fabric of sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars a timely and relevant book
"Dope: A History..." is a well-balanced and informative book that brings clarity and perspective to an oft and all too easily misunderstood topic. Given the spate of doping scandals that consistently hit the news these days, it is timely and relevant. Daniel M. Rosen's writing is concise yet easy to follow, offering a wealth of historically grounded facts and interesting anecdotes. This book should be required reading for the professional - athlete, coach or official - as well as the lay person.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any sports fan
Dope provides a complete and engaging look at the role doping has played in sports over the years. Until very recently, most governing organizations and governments actively encouraged doping amongst its athletes. As pressure mounted, these organizations served platitudes but turned a blind eye to the actions of its athletes and coaches thus tacitly endorsing the practice. Finally in recent years, we are seeing the beginning of a real culture shift. We have come a long way in just a short time.

Mr. Rosen covers all sports from Olympic to US professional sports providing detailed information on the BALCO scandal. There is just enough science to understand the narrative but the author is able to steer clear of sounding like a medical textbook.

Given the backdrop of the current Olympic Games and some of the stories surrounding mysterious changing passports and other suspicious activities this book could not be better timed.

Instead of leaving the reader suspicious of any athletic accomplishment, Mr. Rosen leaves us hopeful that a clean sport is quickly descending on most athletic fields.

And who is this author? Yesalis? A "professor of health policy, administration, exercise and sports science at Penn State"? And he has put together what? An "objective, in-depth collection of articles that examine anabolic-androgenic steroids, their effects, and long-term medical prognosis of use". Whoopee. Sorry, but men looking for Steroid information aren't looking for this type of "data". Men looking for real informaton, information that they can use on Steroids or AAS are going to be wasting their money with this book. If you feel you must read it then hope you find it in a library and not waste your money. If you want information that you can use and from a Bro that you can trust, then check out Anthony Roberts book called Anabolic Steroids: Ultimate Research Guide. And it does mean ULTIMATE. And it is something that you can use and trust being from someone who has Been There and Done That.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive study of steroid history and research.
This is an academic book ,which will appeal to the serious researcher ,in the subject of anabolic steroids. Dr. Charles Yesalis offers the research findings and opinions of steroid advocates and detractors in an unbiased scientific document.
The book includes chapters on drug testing, analysis of performance, health implications and the legal aspects of steroid
possession and distribution ,as well as a comprehensive history of steroids.
The author reveals the controversy of the subject, by introducing the aspect of law enforcement of these controlled drugs, whilst quoting the American Medical Associations view that steroids should not be scheduled and that "...steroids can be used safely."
The author shows that several decades of steroid research ,by the medical authorities, often reveals a lack of understanding of steroid dosing ,as applied effectively, by top competing athletes.
This is a book to be recommended to the sports coach, researcher and above all, to the medical and health educating specialists whose inadequate understanding of anabolic steroids is often fostered by myth and anecdote. ... Read more

Product Description

Fastest, Highest, Strongest presents a comprehensive challenge to the dominant orthodoxy concerning the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport.

Examining the political and economic transformation of the Olympic Movement during the twentieth century, the authors argue that the realities of modern sport require a serious reassessment of current policies, in particular the ban on the use of certain substances and practices. The book includes detailed discussion of:

* The historical importance of World War II and the Cold War in the development of a high-performance culture in sport

* The changing Olympic project: from amateurism to a fully professionalized approach

* The changing meaning of "sport"

* The role of sport science, technology and drugs in pursuing ever-better performance

* The major ethical and philosophical arguments used to support the ban on performance-enhancing substances in sport.

Fastest, Highest, Strongest is a profound critical examination of modern sport. Its straightforward style will appeal to under- and post-graduate students as well as scholars of sports ethics and history, policy makers and all those interested in the changing nature of sport.

Product Description
In this day and age when the sports pages of the local newspaper read like either a police report or a pharmacology text, it is impossible not to conclude that the mantra of winning has entered very dangerous ground. From scandalous college recruiting practices designed to give a team the "edge" on a blue chip athlete, to rampant use of steroids and supplements, a win-at-all-costs philosophy has taken over sports at every level. This can be further underscored by the startling fact that over one million American children between the ages of 12 and 17 have used some form of supplement—in most cases with their parents’ full consent.

When Winning Costs Too Much not only details these abuses and the dangers of the drugs themselves, but also addresses the misguided coaches, failed mentors, and poor role models who have contributed to the decline of the sports-for-sports-sake mentality. Not just accusatory but also prescriptive, the authors provide solutions to many of the problems that plague sports, from reforming the NCAA’s recruiting policies to Dr. Bailes’s program for maximizing athletic performance the healthy, drug-free way. An important book for participants and parents, coaches and administrators, When Winning Costs Too Much will be as valued in the locker room as the living room. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is what's happening today.
When Winning Costs Too Much is a great book that not only covers anabolic steroids and supplements but concussions, fair play, sportsmanship, officiating, media, and authority surrounding sports. I really like the presentation and logic of the arguments presented by the authors, and clearly, they have literally hit the spot. It makes total sense to me, and I agree with everything. I just got a better idea. Why not just give out a lifetime ban from any sport to anybody for the first drug offense? I guarantee you that the players are going to immediately clean up their behaviors, and guess what...the number of fans will actually increase. On the other hand, I can't believe that the authors decided to include George W. Bush, Carl Lewis, and Myles Brand as proponents against the issues of anabolic steroids and unethical behaviors. Before Bush was the President of United States, he was the owner of the Texas Rangers that included Jose Canseco, Ivan Rodriguez Rafael Palmeiro, and Alex Rodriguez who were taking anabolic steroids during that period. There is no way that he couldn't have known what was going on. And also, his father hired Arnold Schwarzenegger, a major user of steroids during his bodybuilding days, to be the chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Carl Lewis, the supposed victim of the scandal that Ben Johnson caused in 1988 Olympics, actually failed drug tests which were all covered up by Olympics officials because he was from USA whereas Ben Johnson was from Canada. Myles Brand was the president of Indiana University and became the president of NCAA. From 2002 to 2009, Brand saw NCAA football and basketball to be billion dollar companies where lack of discipline and punishment have run rampant. So, if Myles Brand was the president and he preached on ethics, so why didn't he do anything to curb the problem? You know how much he was paid for a year? At least $895,000...I'll bet a lot of that money was in form of bribery to keep his mouth shut and look at the other way. Oh...get out of my face, and stop playing the hypocrite. After the solutions are presented in the book, they do deserve merit. But, let's get real...nothing is ever going to happen because the almighty dollar will always rule. I loved the interview between the author and a referee, and it was a side that I never knew before. There is an outstanding story on Mike Hall, a powerlifter from Delaware. Meanwhile, I wished that the authors would denounce ESPN for being one of the biggest culprits to the problems facing sports today. All in all, When Winning Costs Too Much is a great insight of what's really happening in sports, academics, and society, and after five years, nothing has changed.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Reality Check on Modern Day Sports
Although it would take a naïve person to believe that steroid abuse is not prevalent in sports, this preeminent novel highlights scandals and stories that have plagued the purity of sports. When Winning Cost too Much goes into detail about the negative affects of steroid abuse and how it is changing the nature of sports. Sports figures are idolized by society, but how can we idolize athletes that "cheat the system." Do we encourage our children to cheat on their math tests? This is a great book, that will have you questioning modern day sports.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Cost of War and Love is High, Too HIgh.
This book is about winning at all costs in the sports world.Rampant use of drugs and steroids to enhance performances from Olympics to individual games show the decline in the sports ofr sports sake mentality. Two of my sons played sports as youngsters and high school athletes. The other was the best lifeguard in Pulaski, and one used steroids.I, on the other hand, have had to use them twice for a stubborn ear infection which just won't ever go away.

Winning costs too much in all aspects of life. When we win, that means that someone else loses.Fighting for the sake of winning in marriage, work competition, other debates, and just living day-to-day takes its toll on our health. If we win, we get overly excited putting stress on the heart. If we lose, it also puts too much stress on the heart and I'm not talking about our heart-strings (romance). We all want to win at whatever we try. Here lately, I don't seem to be winning at any of my endeavors and, believe me, that hurts more than having a heart attack,At least, that's a fast way to go and the pain goes away.

We have brought up this generation to win or don't ever try again. In earlier eras, it was war which took its toll on our young men who were trained to win at all costs.War kills indiscriminately. But so does retaliation, resentment, hate, and being torn apart by strangers who need not inerfere in our lives in the first place.Today, everyone is a critic and set out to hurt feelings and make ourselves felt.Who cares whether you actually know the person you are flailing out at and hurting their feelings? That makes it impersonal. It makes the critic feel important and gets his venom out of his system onto an unsuspecting victim randomly chosen.

It is rewarding to win ball games, band competitions, debates, disagreements over things which are very important to you; it is hard to always be the loser.I try so hard, and yet fail to achieve the things I want to do to leave a legacy behind to be a contributing citizen and someone what made a difference in her hometown. Not having money makes it a hundredfold harder to win at issues, political and otherwise, but important all the same.We are overlooked because we don't have influence and money for lawyers to fight our battles for us.We're on our own and have to take responsibility for our stands in all walks of life.

Sure, it is fun and rewarding to be a winner. But we can't always do it and should never depend on drugs or others to take the blame for our failures.I failed as a mother, though God knows I tried to protect and teach my sons the way they should act according to Abou Ben Adhem whose legacy was theat God blessed him because he loved his fellowman.I may not love men per se, and I certainly don't even like women very much, but I strive to be fair and just in all of my dealings with those in power and the poor homeless I see everyday on the public buses and at the public library.Life is not fair. But it is what we make it.Strive for winning without scandal, or unjust criticism. It can be done, and God willing, I will survive to fight other battles and win a few along the way. ... Product Description

On August 26, 1960, twenty-three-year-old Danish cyclist Knud Jensen, competing in that year's Rome Olympic Games, suddenly fell from his bike and fractured his skull. His death hours later led to rumors that performance-enhancing drugs were in his system. Though certainly not the first instance of doping in the Olympic Games, Jensen's death serves as the starting point for Thomas M. Hunt's thoroughly researched, chronological history of the modern relationship of doping to the Olympics. Utilizing concepts derived from international relations theory, diplomatic history, and administrative law, this work connects the issue to global political relations.

During the Cold War, national governments had little reason to support effective anti-doping controls in the Olympics. Both the United States and the Soviet Union conceptualized power in sport as a means of impressing both friends and rivals abroad. The resulting medals race motivated nations on both sides of the Iron Curtain to allow drug regulatory powers to remain with private sport authorities. Given the costs involved in testing and the repercussions of drug scandals, these authorities tried to avoid the issue whenever possible. But toward the end of the Cold War, governments became more involved in the issue of testing. Having historically been a combined scientific, ethical, and political dilemma, obstacles to the elimination of doping in the Olympics are becoming less restrained by political inertia.

Product Description
The use of performance-enhancing substances by athletes has a long history, predating the ancient Greek Olympiads. Concern about this practice was manifested in the 20th century by, in the case of the Olympics, the creation of anti-doping organisations, and the adoption of anti-doping policies by these organisations and professional sports leagues in the United States. Leading the way was the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which implemented testing in 1968 at the Olympic Games in Grenoble, France, and Mexico City, Mexico. Product Description
Doping in sport traces the social importance of sport in recent history and the evolution of doping in major sports events. It lists banned substances and practices, discusses their physical effects and describes the policies and controls which are being introduced, both nationally and internationally. The control of doping, ranging from the practicalities of monitoring and coverage of major events to the harmonisation of both practise and policy among the major world sports bodies leads to a reevaluation of the direction for future anti-doping policy. At present there is not enough common understanding between the different organisations, governments and sports bodies.Today sport is a highly commercialised and professional activity and governments are obliged to take more and more interest in the protection of athletes. An additional source of ambiguity arises from the intimate involvement of the sports administration, medical and pharmaceutical professions in the development and refinement of drugs and their monitoring.

This book will be of particular interest to sports organisations and administrators, athletes, trainers, the sports medicine and pharmaceutical professions, athletes themselves and all those who are interested in sport and what lies behind today's high performance sport. ... Read more

Product Description
Many advances have been made since the publication of Drug Testing in Hair. The mid-1990s witnessed the progress in cannabis detection while the late 1990s focused on benzodiazepines detection and the applications in doping control. In more recent years, toxicologists centered on the detection in hair of a single exposure and the related applications in drug-facilitated crimes. Presenting these topics as well as the latest findings from the international community, Analytical and Practical Aspects of Drug Testing in Hair reviews all new developments, the validation of analytical procedures, and the interpretation of data.

Written by well-known, international authors, this comprehensive reference provides practical coverage of the best drug testing techniques and examines the drugs themselves. Some of the applications discussed include doping, drug-facilitated crime investigating, workplace testing, and the granting of drivers' licenses. The authors describe specific drugs, such as opiates, cocaine, and cannabis, and discuss the different testing methods for them. The book also covers postmortem toxicology, pitfalls created by passive exposure, and testing for metals, including inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS), hair multielementary analysis, and the new speciation analysis.

A complete, up-to-date resource that explains numerous drug testing techniques, Analytical and Practical Aspects of Drug Testing in Hair provides useful information for toxicologists, forensic scientists, sports medicine specialists, and pathologists. ... Read more

Product Description

This book brings together an interdisciplinary group of experts in bioethics, sports, law, and philosophy to examine the need for regulating such athletic performance-enhancing technologies as steroids and gene doping.

The use of performance-improving drugs in sports dates back to the early Olympians, who took an herbal tonic before competitions to augment athletic prowess. But the permissibility of doing so came into question only in the twentieth century as the popularity of anabolic steroid use and blood doping among athletes grew. Sports officials and others -- aided by the development of technologies to test participants for proscribed substances -- became concerned over the physical safety of athletes and competitive fairness in sporting events.

In exploring the culture, ethics, and policy issues surrounding doping in competitive athletics, the contributors to this volume detail the history and current state of drug use in sports, analyze the distinctions between acceptable and unacceptable usages, evaluate the ethical arguments for and against permitting athletes to avail themselves of new means of improving athleticism, and discuss possible future doping technologies and the issues that they are likely to raise. They explain how and why some athletes resort to doping and assess what the fair opportunity principle means in theory and practice and how it relates to the concept of an equal opportunity to perform.

This frank discussion of doping in sports includes accounts by former elite athletes and offers an illuminating exchange over the meaning and value of natural talents and genetic hierarchies and the essence of fair competition.
