4-0 out of 5 stars Could be improved, but well worth it!
The premise etc behind this book is excellent.However, the many black and white photos tell the likely reader of book very little.This should not take away though from the solid advice, work-out plans, bits and pieces of commonsense training, diet etc, and the seasonal/periodicity themes that make this book very worthwhile.Although I have not the experience nor credentials that Mr. Smith and many of you have, I recommend taking the themes of this book and expanding in more detail, and ditching the numerous b&w still photos that really tell an exerciser little about the movements.If anything, provide photos of important do's and don'ts of the exercises, but don't half-change the movement with a photo to fill the pages.Other than this opinion, I found the book an excellent addition to my fitness literature and plan on incorporating its ideas into my own routines.

2-0 out of 5 stars book
The routines in this book are soo random and lengthy a simpler more effective approach could be used.his navy seal book was better

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workout!
I wanted to find a workout that I could stick with all year that is challenging and takes my body to new heights in terms of physical strength, endurance, and agility.Though I've only been on the program for a few weeks, I can already see these three aspects changing.

The workout starts normally enough, but gets tough fast.Fortunately Stew has made it flexible enough so that anyone can do it: from the hardcore wanna-be Navy SEAL to the dedicated guy who wants to get in shape.Complete with a full explanation of exercises, the full year-round routine, and even nutritional advice, Stew's book is a great find for those who want to find one good exercise program to stick with for a long time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Must have for 35yr olds with prior exercise experience who want to get back in shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and Flexible
I've had this book since it came out and I am still recommending it to people. The work-outs can be adjusted for different fitness levels but they will take you as far as you want to go. You can't really outgrow this book.
I like the way it is broken up into phases- strength, cardio- this is better than doing the same mix throughout the year. Stretching and flexibility are not forgotten either.
My beginner friends liked the introduction to pyramiding reps (a good trick to increase puul-up/push-up reps)and the fact that you don't need to be in a gym every day. Quite a lot can be done outdoors or at home.

I run across very few other work out schedules that can be used for such a range of fitness levels. It isn't gimicky or sport specific, it's for all around fitness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help Your Athlete Find the Joy in High School Sports
This year our football team set a record ... we were undefeated in our conference for the second consecutive year.Then it came time for our playoff game.As a #3 seed playing a #14 seed, we expected to win our first game.Most of the players and coaches were thinking ahead to the third game, where winning would begin to get difficult.Then the flu made the rounds on our football team.Then the rain ... a total of four inches beginning the day prior to and ending three hours before the game.It was difficult to use our greatest assets of speed and agility in the mud, and some of our key players were still ill but trying to play.This loss ended our dreams for a state championship.After the game we made our way onto the field to say goodbye to the seniors.It broke my heart to see their tears, not knowing whether they were because we lost or because they had played their last game, or perhaps a little of both.We had watched these boys grow up, becoming not just fine athletes but also fine young men.

The fact is that most of these young men will not go on to play football in college, let alone "earn" a college scholarship.According to Jim Thompson, only 5.7 percent of high school football players play in college.For basketball, it's 3 percent for boys and 3.3 percent for girls.Of the young athletes who do play sports in college, only about 2.3 percent receive a scholarship, and most receive a "partial scholarship that may be just a sliver of the entire cost of college."Most parents want to believe their young athlete has the talent to receive a scholarship, but after reading this book will set aside some money for college, realizing the "odds" are against it.

The High School Sports Parent is a comprehensive guide, covering everything from higher goals to sportsmanship to injuries, even helping decide when it's time to quit.Ever hear parents screaming when their kids make a mistake?Know a parent who coaches their child's team?When my son played basketball, at practice one night the coach became very frustrated with his son and threw the basketball into his back, nearly knocking him down. The parents who observed this behavior complained to the principal, who asked him to resign.While these types of parents definitely need to read this book, every sports parent will benefit from Mr. Thompson's advice.Some schools are even handing free copies out to parents in an effort to avoid problems later on.This book isn't just about helping your child learn to compete; it is also a tool to help you help your teen athlete thrive, making himself, his team, and the game better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for teenagers!!
I was reading this book and set it down to get a cup of coffee. I came back to find my teenage son had picked it up and just started reading. He realy connected to the storyline. I joked with him that it is the 'Outsiders' of his time. I didn't take the book back and instead let him continue to read and then snuck the book back after he went to bed. I found that I couldn't put it down and as such, finished it the same day I started. My wife soon found herself in the same boat.

This is a great story, and while only the authors first offering that I know of, I found myself drawn to the characters and excited to read on. I look forward to his next title.

I recommend this book to anyone, especially those with teenagers that, like all teenagers, are trying to find out where they belong and how to fit in, especially in difficult circumstances.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read about life in a small town.
This is a great story for those of us who live or work in a small town. Although anyone would enjoy the story, the life stories told in Bury The Dead hit home for people who appreciate the intensity of small town athletics or know what it's like to deal with tragedy in a community where everybody knows everybody else. As I read the book, I could picture members of my own community as the characters described in the book. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a touching story delivered in a straightforward, easy to read style. ... Read more

Product Description

Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports provides extensive recommendations for reducing catastrophic injuries, preventing deaths in athletic programs, and making sports safer and more enjoyable.

Data compiled for the first time in one convenient source, this timely resource is based on results of more than 10 years of study by the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research. The authors discuss what types of injuries are most prevalent, who sustains the injuries, and why and where they occur. Unlike most of the material available in this area, Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports includes both men's and women's individual and team sports.

The authors bring reality to the statistics by presenting case reports of catastrophic injuries at the high school and college level. Readers will learn

- how head and spine injuries occur;
- the frequency and causes of deaths in athletes;
- catastrophic injury data in football;
- how injuries are sustained in team sports--soccer, basketball, ice hockey, baseball, and lacrosse;
- the incidence of injuries in individual sports--gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, track and field, and cheerleading; and
- general guidelines for injury prevention as well as sport-specific recommendations.

Each chapter concludes with helpful references and tables of relevant statistics.

Catastrophic Injuries in High School and College Sports is the eighth volume in the HK Sport Science Monograph Series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for pre-teens and teens
This is a wonderful book for preteens and teens who love sports! It's got a little of everything: a love interest, mystery, high jinks, and lots of wrestling action. It also includes a glossary of wrestling terms for those not too familiar with the sport. The language of the book is appropriate to age group for which it is written and parents can be confident in selecting it for their children. It would make an excellent gift. I highly recommend it.

Product Description

New England sports fans wonder about Guy Vitale, East Boston’s greatest athlete, who lettered in three sports and had so much football and baseball talent that sportswriters said it wasn’t a question of whether he’d turn pro, but only which sport he’d pick.

An All-Scholastic choice by Boston’s leading newspapers in his junior and senior years, 1936 Baseball Schoolboy Hall of Famer after hitting .621 his senior year, Guy starred on Barnstable’s legendary 1937 club and 1938 Cape Cod League Champion, Falmouth. Everyone believed he possessed all the necessary tools to attain his dream: playing Major League baseball.

What happened? This chronicle of Vitale’s life, written by his nephew, author of two previous novels, explains why he didn’t make it to the Big Leagues, but achieved a measure of glory during a satisfying career serving his Country.

This book tells all in a riveting manner; so compelling you won’t want to put it down. Ciampa, Curry, Famulari, Hegner, Herman, Indrisano, Khederian, Lennie Merullo, Morse, Rocciolo, the Sacco boys, Siciliano, Struzzerio, beloved St. Lazarus priests, Father Francisco Berti and Father Leo Toma, famed East Boston Coach Fred O’Brien; they’re all here, their lives touching Guy’s in different ways.

A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Guy Vitale: A Portrait of a Life
I read this book and loved it! I was not raised with football, and still don't understand it very well, but was surprised how the author's writing style kept me reading and interested. I DO know and understand baseball, and loved the intrigue of Guy Vitale's career as he moved from high school (East Boston High) to semi-pro leagues (The Cape Cod League, The Twin States League), and then to a professional league on the Eastern Shore of Maryland (Eastern Shore League). I wanted to jump into the book and strangle his high school coach!

Guy's experiences in the service during World War II and then undercover as a Field Agent with the Central Intelligence Agency CIA) left me wanting to learn more about this intriguing person. I hope Sacco has more info on the last part of Vitale's life and that he will write a sequel!The China ConnectionLittle Sister Lost: A Powerful Story of the Search for Anna Lieber, Her Husband and Children, Casualties of the Cold War. ...
