Excerpt: The Louisiana Independent School Association, more commonly known as LISA, was an agency, which regulated and promoted the interscholastic athletic competitions of some independent high schools in the state of Louisiana. The organization is now no longer in existence. LISA was made up of several (mostly smaller) private schools throughout the state of Louisiana. LISA was divided into several state-wide classes, also known as divisions, based on each school's student enrollment for grades nine through twelve: 1A, 2A, and 3A. LISAs competitive sports programs included Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Cross Country, Outdoor Track and Field, and Football. Although often criticized by schools which competed in the LHSAA (Louisiana High School Athletic Association), LISA fielded several very good athletic teams. The 1974 East Ascension Broncos (Gonazles, LA), 1975 Belmont Academy Eagles (Opelousas, LA), 1986 Ridgedale Academy Raiders (West Monroe, LA) , 1989 False River Academy Gators (New Roads, LA), and 1990 River Oaks Academy Mustangs (Monroe, LA), all of whom were LISA State Champions, were some of the best high school football teams in the state of Louisiana in their respective years, featuring such talented players as Kent Singletary (East Ascension), Ike Duhon (Belmont), Brennan Jareau (False River),Howard Beetz (Ridgedale) and Matt Williams (River Oaks). LISA was also home to some very intense private school rivalries. Chapters: Hoosier Hysteria. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 44. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Hoosier Hysteria is the state of excitement surrounding basketball in Indiana, or more specifically the Indiana high school basketball tournament. In part, the excitement stemmed from the inclusion of all tournament entrants (traditionally black and Catholic schools were not invited in the early years) into the same tournament, where a small town's David might knock off a large city's Goliath. The most famous example occurred in 1954, when Milan (enrollment 161) defeated Muncie Central (enrollment over 1,600) to win the State title. The plot of the now famous movie, Hoosiers, was based on the story of the 1954 Milan team and seems to typify the hysteria related to basketball in the state of Indiana. Indiana's passion for basketball was observed and written about by basketball's inventor, James Naismith. In 1925, Naismith visited an Indiana basketball state finals game along with 15,000 screaming fans and later wrote, that while it was invented in Massachusetts, "basketball really had its origin in Indiana, which remains the center of the sport." Hoosiers have a traditional love for basketball similar to the love for football in Texas, Baseball in New York and Minnesotans' love for hockey. It truly is one of the State's most cherished traditions. Historically, each of the several hundred small towns of Indiana had its own small school system. Before consolidation of many of these rural school districts in the last half of the twentieth century, Indiana high schools had fewer students than those of most other states; basketball was a natural game for these schools since it only required five starters and a few reserves. Even one or two great basketball players could make a high school tea...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14443 ... Read more

Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 39. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Catholic High School Athletic Association or CHSAA is a high school athletic association made up of Catholic High Schools based in New York City, Long Island, and Westchester. It is the largest such Catholic High School athletic league in the United States. The NYCHSAA is divided into three sections. The New York Section consists of schools in Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. New York's Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) was formed in March 1927. The Catholic schools in the city from approximately 1908 to 1922 competed along with their grammar school counterparts in baseball and track, but no larger organization arose from the competition. The Catholic secondary schools of the city remained largely unorganized, while their counterparts in such cities as Chicago and Philadelphia had been organized into leagues for years. Finally, in 1927, the Southern Branch of the New York Catholic High Schools Athletic Association organized league competition with an outdoor track meet held at Fordham University on May 26, 1927. The charter members of the league were Fordham Prep, All Hallows, LaSalle Academy, Regis, St. Anns, and Xavier High, all in Manhattan; and Brooklyn Prep, Bishop Loughlin, Brooklyn Cathedral, St. Johns Prep, St. Francis Prep, and Holy Trinity, all in Brooklyn. In 1928, the CHSAA introduced indoor track, basketball, and baseball to the program, and in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4281907 ... Read more
