4-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of PE, Exercise Science, and Sport
Good overview for anyone considering a career in a sports related field. Most photos are black & white which is good since it helps keep cost down. However, a lot of them are old. Since this is the 16th edition published in 2009, I would have expected the the photos would have been updated to more recent ones. While there are some more recent photos, many of them seem to be from the 70's and 80's which makes the book feel outdated. Overall, the information is good and current though.

It does tend to be rather liberal. It puts the primary responsibility for physical fitness not on the individual (or parents in the case of children) but on government agencies and programs, schools, and organized fitness/sports programs.

I can not find any evidence of this being a used book. The quality is like new and I received it before another book that I paid to have expedited. I guess I wasted my money on expedited shipping.

Product Description

This book has been a big hit with physical educators since it came out in 1989. Now it's available in a new edition that keeps all the best features of the original, adds new material, and improves the presentation, all while making the information more affordable!

The new edition is split into two books--one for the elementary level and another for middle school--so you pay only for the lesson plans you need. Each book still provides developmentally appropriate lesson plans for every day of the school year plus information on how to organize classes to best implement the lessons. You can use the time you save on developing and organizing content to focus on providing quality teacher-learner interaction.

Both new books include an introductory section that explains basic motor development concepts and effective teaching strategies. With this background information fresh in your mind, it's easy to apply the ready-to-use lesson plans for maximum effectiveness. Other helpful features new to the second editions include

- new activities, including units on health (in keeping with the increased emphasis on health-related physical activity);
- unit summaries; and
- new artwork throughout.

Physical Education for Children: Daily Lesson Plans for Elementary School includes 437 lessons for grades K-5. (Physical Education for Children: Daily Lesson Plans for Middle School features 143 lessons for grades 6-8.) The activities become more challenging as you progress through the grade levels, and new activities are added at the higher levels. For each level, you'll find units of lesson plans on the following topics:

- Organization
- Fitness
- Games and Sports
- Rhythmic Activities
- Gymnastics
- Health
- Classroom Activities

The units on organization include both general concepts and sample lesson plans that demonstrate how to conduct classes that maximize students' opportunities to learn. The classroom activities are perfect to use on rainy days or as a teaching tool in a standard classroom curriculum.

The ready-to-use, fully illustrated lesson plans feature

- student objectives,
- lists of equipment needs,
- warm-up activities,
- skill development activities, and
- concluding activities.

You'll also find an appendix at the back of the book that provides rating scales and evaluation forms to help you conduct assessments.

The Physical Education for Children books make it easy for teachers to combine program planning, lesson plan development, and effective teaching practices to provide a quality physical education program. No elementary or middle school physical education teachers, especially new teachers, should be without them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing PE Resource
I am a first-time PE teacher and have found this resource to be extremely helpful. Lesson plans are outlined in detail beginning with the warm up, to key skills, to a cool down. Lessons are targeted for various age levels. It is well-organized and full of amazing PE lessons. I love the warm up ideas!

5-0 out of 5 stars PE Teacher's best friend!
This instructional book is fantastic. The detailed lesson plans for the whole year is very helpful. It's a PE teacher's best friend!

5-0 out of 5 stars A godsend!
In my first year of teaching PE, I needed some help in figuring out how to meet all of California's State Standards (they were new this year). This book became a valuable resource in planning out my classes.

I used their plan and then tailored it to meet my classes (I taught nine classes K-6). I was able to identify which standard the plan met and could cut and paste to meet the needs of my students. AS only having an outdoor area to work in, I was able to use most of the plans with what equipment I had. It did lack in outdoor activities for limited areas, but I used other resources for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very valuable resource!
This book provides practical and useful lessons as well as importantinformation about teaching at the middle school level. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not good enough
I took the praxis test in NJ, and the book says that they're written state specific, but there was more information on the test that WASN'T in the book than I had thought possible! I'm not writing this negatively because I failed, I passed, but I passed because of information I knew before studying from the book. They place so much emphasis on ideas and concepts not tested, like the philosophy behind PE as opposed to specific teaching practices and procedural information vital to the profession. It did have some useful information, but if I were to do it again, I'd go for another book. ... Read more

Enter Everyone Can!: Skill Development and Assessment in Elementary Physical Education. This book and Web site package offers a wealth of information from the Achievement-Based Curriculum model that addresses the needs of all students. Product Description
This book represents the first major publication in 1934 by Joseph H. Pilates and includes his early Twentieth Century philosophies, principles, and theories about health and fitness. He bases his work on the concept of a balanced Body and Mind, drawing on the approach espoused by the early Greeks. While some of his personal philosophies reflected early 20th Century viewpoints, his athletic and fitness doctrines were years ahead of his time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Before his time in maintaining optimal health
This book was an outstanding value for the small amount of money I paid. I never knew Pilates was developed by a man because so very few men ever attend our local YMCA class...anyhows the book is great for someone who wants alot of great info without having to read too much in order to get it...I would recomend this book as well as any other written by the late Joseph Pilates...he was a man well ahead of his time in the pioneering of preventive health!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate source of the Pilates method
This book and "Return to Life through Contrology" written by Joseph Pilates are the ultimate sources for understanding the philosophy and motivation behind the Pilates method. I think they are a must for people who love and practice Pilates. Not an easy read, but you don't have to understand every expression and word to get the meaning of them. What really comes through from these books is how passionate Joseph Pilates was about his methods and teachings. You will also find that not only he had an extensive and vast knowledge of human biomechanics but also he widely understood physics, biology and was able to make the connections that we just now are coming to understand. He truly was a pioneer and ages (not just years!) ahead of his time. On top of all that he was a brilliant inventor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading
I think that the book gives you some insight as to what kind of a person Joseph Pilates was, and where so many of his exercises stem from.. thinking of that era, and what was available at the time. It's always good to look back to see where we have come from and how we have progressed and changed. It may be a book that I would refer back to, but does not make for "light" reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pilates - Your Health
I have been studying the Pilates Method for about 3 years now. This book along with "Return to Life Through Contrology" has enabled me to more fully understand the Pilates method of exercise. It is not justexercise - it is a way of life.If you are a beginner it would be wise tochoose one of the newer books to help you get started but, I would alsopurchase this book and Return to Life Through Contrology so that you canmore fully understand the principals behind the method.I refer to mycopies often for information and instruction. These are small, paperback, black and white books...but, they pack a great deal of information intotheir little package! ... The authors also present the complete physical education curriculum, including 48 lesson plans, for children up to the age of 8. You receive social interaction lesson plans, healthy behavior lesson plans, and evaluation methods.

Each lesson plan has specific goals and objective to be achieved, offers specific points of emphasis to consider as you implement the lesson, and comes with ideas for modifying it according to the children’s needs. These ready-to-use lesson plans provide an instant framework for creating a new program or updating and fortifying your existing program.

Early Steps Physical Education Curriculum offers a top-notch curriculum, well-researched information and instruction, and engaging and fun games that help children develop social skills and acquire a basic knowledge of what it means to be healthy and active as they continue to grow. It’s a great resource for teachers, students, child-care professionals, and all those who work with preschool children or who train those who will work with preschoolers.
