5-0 out of 5 stars Better than expected!

4-0 out of 5 stars A great little guide to the Japanese Budo philosophy and principles.
The author is most known for his books on Japanese swordmanship; however, this book focuses primarily on how to live your life according to the principles and philosophy of budo (Martial ways). This book begins with an introduction where it emphasizes that the real secret to the martial arts is realizing that "training is a process of self-discovery."The first chapter explains how the Japanese martial arts are built on hard physical training. This training is also built upon the idea of making progress if you train consistently. The second chapter deals with training the mind.Mental discipline is required to succeed at any martial art because the mind and body must work together if you intend to follow any Japanese martial art.The very nature of Budo is covered in chapter three. The fourth chapter explains the three martial virtues, which include strength, courage and loyalty.Training the spirit is emphasized in chapter five. This book also has some very interesting and educational appendix sections. The first one covers choosing a martial art and the second one has eight essential texts that are must reading for the martial artist. The bibliography has a list of texts the author recommends to martial arts students. In conclusion, this is a great little guide to following the way of the warrior.Rating:4 stars.Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Season of the Warrior: a poetic tribute to warriors, The Monanock Defensive Tactics System, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, PR-24 Baton Advanced Techniques)

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Survey of the Practice and History of all Martial Arts
This book is outstanding! It covers the entire family tree of martial arts from the beginning to current day. This is truly an exceptional work that will educate even a seasoned martial artist about all of the various styles and noteworthy masters and practioners.

I highly recommend especially new students read this book and learn about the various styles, masters and practitioners. No matter what style you study you should have some knowledge of all styles to round out your martial arts education. You will gain a better understanding of where your style fits into the history and family tree structure of the martial arts and that will give you more context to understand your own studies.

This is one of the books I have listed as essential for any martial artist to have in his or her library.A fascinating read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I am a brown belt in ASK.I am working toward my black belt. This book was suggested as valuable reading material.Excellent book.Every Martial artist should have it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific One-Stop Source of Martial Mania
This reference work was written and editedby the same authors who wrote the Q&A, "Martail Arts Catalogue" in 1976.This book is more indepth and authoritative. The primary sections are on Tradition, History, and the Pioneers who have helped shaped this multi-faceited idea of what we call "martial arts."

The chapters are very good, providing excellent history and coverage.America is probably a little over represented. This however, doesn't mean they should have written less about American martial arts, just more of other traditions.

It must also be fair to say, that America has contributed much to the Asain arts and helped expand the arts, for better or worse, where they are today. The photos are neat and add greatly to this book. The writing is sometimes dry, like most reference works are.

All in all, it is a book that stands on its own and should be purcahsed by those martial artist who either are interested in history or having a quick refernce at their bookshelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars few japanese/okinawan karate masters, too much US
This book provides little information about japanese and okinawan karate masters and is much to US oriented for a real encyclopedia.

Product Description
The inhabitants of the British Isles have played a decisive part in the development or rediscovery of ancient games in which there was competition between two sides for the ball. A major part of this book describes the evolution and development of various ball games and the social attitudes to particular sports, thus providing the context in which the artists worked. It is an illustrated and informative work which fills a gap in the literature of sport by recording various ways in which games have been portrayed in paintings and prints. The author has spent years in research and in order to ensure the accuracy of the text she has had it checked by leading authorities on each game. It is designed to be used and enjoyed by sportsmen and social historians as well as those with an interest in sporting paintings. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars System Helped Me Get My Brown Belt
I used this speed training system to prepare myself for the honor of receiving a brown belt. It was very easy to follow, and I understood immediately what was being suggested for me to accomplish. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lack Of Speed Is Just As Much A Mental Affliction As A Physical Condition
Although I didn't find this book to be perfect, I did find this book to be very well done overall and literally loaded with lots of good solid information covering a wide array of techniques, exercises, and training methods to enhance one's speed. Not only on a physical level, but perhaps more importantly on a mental level as well.

Although some might say that there wasn't enough detail covering all the various methods that is to be expected in a book whose scope is to cover a number of varying methods to improve a singular aspect of ones performance, which in this case is speed. Sure there are a lot of more detailed books out there on any one of the many techniques described in this book, but I doubt you will find that many books out there specifically on increasing ones speed in the martial arts, that has as much quality information in it as this book does.

I highly recommend this book along with the ones listed below to assist you in enhancing your martial arts skills.

Timing in the Fighting Arts: Your Guide to Winning in the Ring and Surviving on the Street

Warrior Speed

Martial Mechanics: Maximum Results with Minimum Effort in the Practice of the Martial Arts

Shawn Kovacich
Martial Artist/Author of the Achieving Kicking Excellence series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for fast people and even better for someone is slow.
This book is filled with alot of great knowledge on what creates speed, building or having a basis for speed, and improving your overall speed. Also he doesn't go into these complicated scientific explanations of how speed works. I mean come on, if we were smart enough to be scientists why would we be training to fight right? lol. However, I feel that the author spent alot of time reiterating the same points over and over again. That's good for people who have a hard time learning things the first time. For me it made me really the read boring at certain points cause I usually grasp concepts very easily especially when it comes to improving my arts. That's the only reason why I gave this book 4 stars insted of 5. But it's definatly worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I just received this book a few days ago.I have read it through and have already started to incorporate some of the techniques into my training. One thing I enjoy about Mr. Christensen's books is his writing style. They are written clearly and with humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
I recommend this book to any martial arts student that feels like they have plateaued on speed. The relaxation methods really work and the speed drills are fun and really make a difference. Buy this book, read it cover to cover and use the authors techniques to make yourself faster than you ever thought possible. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 18 Pieces to Make in a Day!
It is pretty much nonsense that you can make these pieces in a day-- some of them maybe yes, but mostly no.Some of the directions given don't work, and then if you want to make the piece you are on your own.But there are some interesting new ideas.

1-0 out of 5 stars Find a better metal clay book
Like Jackie's later book Metal Clay: The Complete Guide, she totally ignores the fact that there is more than one metal clay product on the market. Why?Because Jackie does not distribute Precious Metal Clay® (PMC) made by Japan's Mitsubishi Materials Corporation; she runs Art Clay® World, USA, Inc, distributing Art Clay®, a metal clay product made by Aida Chemical Industries, Ltd.At the very least, she might have discussed the pros and cons of the two companies' products. To ignore PMC® altogether seems too mercenary an approach to writing a project book.I said my peace when panning Jackie's book Metal Clay.

The projects shown are somewhat inspirational but the "faux raku" project stands out as just plain economically silly. For "faux raku," Art Clay® Silver paste is applied over terra cotta then, after firing, liver of sulfur is applied for a raku-like patina. It occurred to me that it would be a whole lot less expensive to actually make raku pottery than to make "faux raku" with jewelry-grade silver.Yes, you can do it with Art Clay® but why would you?

5-0 out of 5 stars New Ideas
The instructions were good and I found the advice great. I am just starting to apply my self to PMC. This book is just what I need.
Thanks

5-0 out of 5 stars Art Clay Silver and Gold 19 Unique Jewelry Pieces to make in a day

3-0 out of 5 stars All skill level book
This art clay (trade name) book covers what everyone should know that is going to use the Art Clay brand metal clay. The first sections/chapters get the basic stuff down so one can move on to the fun parts making the projects. The pictures are of a good size with large numbers to correspond to the descriptive blurbs. They are of the close up type with little background of the work surface visible. (I do hate it when they show more work surface than the item they are making.) The material lists are well thought out in their content. The glossary and the gemstone characteristic chart is a nice touch. the chart really important in selecting stones to bake with the clay. I own it ... Read more

Product Description

Sports talk in America has evolved from small-time barroom banter into a major media smorgasbord that runs 24/7 on TV and radio. With hundreds of billions of dollars generated annually by pro and college teams in major markets nationwide, sports fans across the country are more dedicated than ever to their teams. And when it comes to sports talk—especially all-sports radio—it’s all about entertainment, information, prognostication, analysis, rankings, and endless discussion. Prominent sports-media figures in each of the three target cities—Cleveland, Detroit, and Washington, D.C.—engage in this phenomenon with a compilation of sports lists sure to delight as well as stir up debate within these already-buzzing sports communities.

List topics include:
• What were the most lopsided trades in local sports history?
• Who were the most overrated athletes to play in our town?
• What local athlete had the best appearance in TV or film?
• What was the most heartbreaking loss in local sports history?
• What was the greatest single play in local sports history?
• Who are our team’s most hated rivals?
• Plus dozens of “guest” lists contributed by famous local sports and entertainment celebrities.

Not only does Detroit host major pro sports teams—the Lions (NFL), the Red Wings (NHL), the Tigers (MLB), and the Pistons (NBA)—the area also includes prominent college sports programs such as the University of Michigan. Detroit’s fans are some of the most educated and fanatical in the country, thanks to the work of long-time commentators Mike Stone and Art Regner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Want a well rounded child?
I bought this book for my six-year-old niece.

As a black belt in multiple styles and a martial arts teacher, I recommend this book to any parent who is enrolling their child in martial arts at the child's request. I also recommend this book to any parent who thinks that martial arts will help their child not be a sissy. Why? Because martial arts is much more than kicking and punching, it is about how you behave all day long. Dr. Webster-Doyle speaks to those things that are essential to the arts but most people do not think about: respect, order, honor, responsibility.

Do you know how many people want me to prove myself once they find out I'm a black belt? Do you know how many of them are martial artists? Zero. The reward of a martial artist is not the ability to beat up "all comers", it's the self-confidence AND self-disciple to exercise grace and peace until the last moment possible. Don't think that the smile-y faced instructors in this book couldn't hurt or kill you if they had to.

Most of the concepts in this book will need to be discussed with your child. This book will need to be read to younger children. Older children can take turns reading with their parents. The kids will love the pictures.

Before you buy, you need to know this is not a book that introduces different styles of martial arts. It is more a primer on behavior expected by child martial artists in (and out) of the dojo.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Bad Book Overall.
I got this one for my son before his first class. It is really awful.I enrolled him so he could learn to fight. To protect himself from bullies. He got nothing out of the reading and the concepts were not condusive for teaching a kid to protect himself. It really seemed more like a book on how to become and absolute wimp.I don't know what world this guy lives in, but it isn't this one, where signs of real qweakness just get you beat down. What a collosal waste of money that was.

Product Description

What happens when you put an expressive form in a competitive frame? This question motivates Frank Hall’s study of competitive Irish stepdancing. He examines this dance tradition—from the organization of competitions to the movement of dancers’ bodies—in relation to themes of authority, authenticity, and control.             Irish stepdancing, known for many decades primarily in ethnic enclaves, expanded tremendously as Riverdance and other shows took this dance form to new performance contexts on the world stage. In describing and analyzing the history and development of competitive stepdancing in Ireland, the United States, and beyond, Hall reveals the issues, forces, and values that entwine all participants, including competition organizers, judges, dancers, parents, and teachers. Investigating the process of teaching and learning the movement and analyzing its stage performance, he elucidates the syntactic and semantic dimensions of Irish dancing as a body language.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most important military books in history
The Warring States period Warring States Period 475-221 BCE is a history of constant warfare, of alliances and counter-alliances, and of treaties made and broken. The nature of warfare evolved during the period.During the Warring States period, political stability was impossible to gain by adventurous military action. With the advent of swelling ranks of soldiers, protracted sieges, and an ever increasing drain on state treasuries, warfare became a serious matter for study.

Thus, the opening remark of "The Art Of War" states--without exaggeration--war had become the most serious business of the state, the key to survival or ruin. The author of this and other pithy aphorisms on how to successfully fight a war was Sun Tzu.Sun Tzu scholars place his writing "The Art of War" in the Warring States Period, based on the descriptions of warfare in the text. The book has received great exposure in the west starting in the eighteenth century after being translated by a French missionary. It has been reported that Napoleon studied the text and effectively put many of its teachings to good use.For the past 2,000 years, it has been the most important military treatise in all of Asia, even known by name with the common people.Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese military figures have studied it and employed its concepts to good effect. This is especially evident in the military tactics of 20th century revolutionaries like Mao Zedong and Ho Chi Minh.

The book is comprised of 13 chapters. The thesis of Sun's work is one should employ an army after a thorough analysis mandated by careful planning and the formulation of an overall strategy before embarking on a campaign.Sun emphasizes rational self-control, influenced by Daoist teachings throughout the book.

Chap 1-Laying Plans
18. All warfare is based on deception. 19. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

Chap 6-Weak Points And Strong
8. Hence that general is skillful in attack whose opponent does not know what to defend; and he is skillful in defense whose opponent does not know what to attack.

The best translation is the Samuel B. Griffith edition

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic on the priciples of war
This ancient classic of 13 chapters was written over 2,500 years ago by the legendary Chinese general Sun Tzu. It is a must have for military buffs that enjoy reading about the tactics of the most succesful generals. It is rumored that Napoleon used a French translation of the Art of War to his advantage while conquering most of Europe, and he lost when he broke its principles.
The principles that are with in this ancient text can also be used in games of strategy, business conflicts, and the day to day battles of life.
Here are ten principles to give you a sample of the wisdom found in its pages:

Supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance with out fighting.

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.

Spies are the most important element in war, because upon them depends an army's ability to move.

All warfare is based on deception.

The general who wins a battle makes many calculations before the battle is fought.

There is no instance of a country having benefited from a prolonged war.

The clever combatant looks to the effect of combined energy, and does not require too much from individuals.

In war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak.

When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. (So they can retreat).

Move not unless you see an advantage; use not your troops unless there is something to be gained, fight not unless the position is critical.

Taken as a whole this is a book of wisdom and principles on how to win. I rank it in my top ten books I have ever read. It is a must have for any home library. The is a very small book that is quick and easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars work blindness?
I expected more; I exepect a "this the Sun-Tzu paragraph; this is how and why is applied to martial arts".
It has good content, and reflects the Sun Tzu work and martial arts.. in a dissasociated way. I found the book like the author says: I read the book of Sun-Tzu, lets take the subject of each of the 13 books, and let me develop it from a martial view.
--
Esperaba m‡s.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE ART OF WAR
This is an excellent text on military strategy and use of tactics to control people. It is over 2500 years old and is still relevant today. It is a book studied world wide by most military forces and some police agencies. As a police officer survival skills instructor I teach many of Sun Tzu's techniques and tacics for dealing with crowd control and riots. It is also serves some purpose as a practical guide for use in self-defense training. Author has done a simple and effective job translating and presenting the ideas and concepts of Sun Tzu. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for enthusiastic children
The Martial Arts Training Diary for Kids is an excellent book for children ages 9 to 11 who are avid martial artists. There are fun activities, such as crossword puzzles and word searches. The book includes Korean, Chinese, and Japanese terminology. There are great stories about other athletes who overcame to become excellent in their sports. The diary segments following the stories get kids to think and interpret the meaning of the stories--so they can relate to them personally. The sections on goals and progress charts are a good start, but they could use some improvement to make them more understandable for children. There is also a chapter on performing kata or forms; this segment has an area to write down forms and instructors' comments. The section on sparring is well written, and contains an area to record tournaments.I think that this book is definitely aimed toward the competitive young martial artist--as the book was written by a taekwondo instructor. ... More than 1,300 outstanding photographs introduce over 155 practical techniques encompassing all types of holds: joint-lock holds, chokes, head locks, nerve holds, pressure point attacks, takedowns, ground pins, advanced combination holds and transitions, and defenses against chokes and joint-lock holds. 1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this book if you want to use it for grappling tech
I made the mistake of purchasing this book thinking it would be a good source of information on grappling. From the title I would have expected some coverage of holding techniques or pins used in Judo or Jujitsu. The submission explanation are below par. The only part of the book I found useful was the chokes and choke defenses.

Any of the Gracie, Machado or even the Judo books are much better than this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on subject
This is one of the best books out there on holds and locks. Mr. Tedeschi is apparently a well known designer and artist, and his books seem to reflect that expertise, as they are nicely laid out and designed with very clear photographs and clear and concise explanations and text accompanying the photos.

The book presents over 150 holds and locks, so the coverage is very complete. So if you just learned all the techniques in this book, you really wouldn't need to learn anymore. The techniques are organized by area of the body, as is typical, so there are chapters on wrist holds, finger locks, armlocks and holds, neck and headlocks, and leg and ankle locks.

Standing holds are included as well as ground holds, so some matwork is included too, which may be of interest to the grappling and BJJ enthusiasts out there.

In addition to the above, the book also has many useful or even unique features that I haven't seen in other books on holds and locks, such as:

1. Comparisons of the same holds and locks in the various arts, such as aikido, jiu-jitsu, judo, wrestling, and hapkido, showing the similarities in techniques across the different arts

2. Very thorough and detailed pressure point and nerve charts

3. A presentation of wrist holds by biomechanical action that is useful

4. Overview pages at the beginning of each chapter, such as wrist locks, illustrating the final position of the lock, which makes it easy to review the material or go to the lock you're interested in (since the names of the different holds and locks vary widely in the different disciplines)

5. Tips on holds and chokes, such as how to eliminate "play" in chokes.

6. Detailed photo sequences, usually incorporating more photos than in other such books, making it easier to follow the action

7. A chapter specifically on nerve and nerve cavity type holds

8. High quality, glossy paper that is rare on all but the most expensive books these days (you pay more for it, of course)

9. Photographs are black and white with very high contrast, making them easy to see

10. The whole book is just very nicely organized, laid out, and convenient to use

I have a suggestion on how to use the book. If you're a specialist in holds and locks, there might not be that much new to you here, but if you're more of a karate or kung fu or TKD person and you're trying to learn some holds and locks to integrate with your percussion techniques, I have some advice for you, since that's primarily what I am, although I have a second specialty in chin na.

It's not necessary to learn a great many techniques. Remember, back in the 1400s in Japan even a great jiu jitsu master might only know a dozen or two dozen different holds, but he could apply them with great skill to many different types of situations. I think that approach still has merit today. You could pick half a dozen or a dozen and leave it at that.

Another way to go would be to pick a few wrist locks, a few elbow locks, neck holds and chokes, and leg and ankle locks each. Also, some holds work better at arm's length and others are for more closeup. You could pick several that work at each distance as well, and several that work standing as well as on the ground, such as the standard armbar or under arm pin.

Finally, there is the distinction of whether the lock is applied from the inside or outside position relative to the opponent's guard. For example, the standard arm bar is done with you to the outside of his arm, and therefore away from the other punching hand, whereas the well known outward wrist lock, although a formidable technique, is done from the inside, where one is more vulnerable. But both kinds of techniques should be learned since you aren't always able to get to the outside guard position.

If you're interested in further information, the books by Yang Jwing Ming on chin na such as Analysis of Shaolin Chin Na and Taiji Chin Na, are also excellent, and also Ming's videos, the video by Kwong Wing Lam on chin na, and there are a few others I'm probably forgetting. The only problem with a book even as good as this one, is that for the price of this book new, you can get a video on the subject that actually shows the techniques in action. The Ming video I have has over 100 holds and locks, but he has several.

In fact, if you watch the auctions for a while, you can pick them up used on e Bay for less than the price of these books new. The only thing is chin na ones don't get listed as often as the other martial arts videos and you might have to watch for a while to find some. But that's how I got mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Thorough Volume on a Specific Subject!
If you already have Mark Tedeschi's Huge 1136-page Hapkido book, you're probably wondering what makes this volume on holds any different. The main difference is this: The big Hapkido book _does_ include every technique shown here. However, the detail in this volume is much more exact--the big Hapkido book was so inclusive that the author was limited to showing 2-3 photos to illustrate a hold or thorw. This volume on holds uses an average of 5-9 photographs per technique, including close-ups. The descriptive narrative is also more specific in this volume. So if you would like a volume which is incredibly specific on the subject of holds and locks, this book is the thing! If you already have the big book, and don't really need the extra detail, then this volume would probably be redundant.

I should add that I am pleased with the quality of the volumes put out by the publisher, Weatherhill.Clear photographs are printed on slick acid-resistant paper, and the boards of these volumes are covered with a laminated paper that will resist picking up sweat (or any other of those wonderful things we get on our books while taking them on the mat or discussing techniques after practice).Tedeschi has gone the extra mile in making ALL of his books as specific as possible. Most of the techniques shown include extra photographs and diagrams of bones, muscles, and pressure points as they apply to the specific technique. For instance, the section on chokes and head locks includes 6 pictures of wrist action along with two diagrams of pressure points on the hands--and the explanation of why you align your wrist in a certain way, and how it is the most effective biomechanical method. This, similar photo-diagrams showing the difference between Basic Entries and Forced Entries, Eliminating free play in a choke, the importance of body positioning, types of chokes, major targets (again, several pictures naming areas with their pressure point location & proper location name), and attack points--this is before he even begins to show and describe a variety of chokes!

This specific volume includes an overview (history, types of holds, comparing holds from different martial arts, responsible use of force), then fundamentals (breakfalls, concepts, principles, stances, footwork, etc.), Wrist Locks (10 different), Arm Locks (16 of them!), shoulder locks (12), Finger Locks (18 kinds, 8 applications), leg locks (12), Chokes & Head Locks (32), Nerve Holds (20), Defenses Against Chokes and Head Locks (10), and Defenses against Joint Locks (10).Tedeschi includes a complete bibliography of his sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Received the book yesterday and alredy read half of it.Outstanding!Good layout, clear pictures, well written descriptions of techniques.I also like the fact that the author addresses how various styles will have slightly different ways of doing the same techniques. 5-0 out of 5 stars Busted:The Rise and Fall of Art Schlichter
This book was well-written, spoken from the heart, and gave me a feeling that I really got to know Art.I'm so glad he wrote this book because there are many who have trouble with this addiction.Having been such a star player gives Art a platform to get his message out.He has paid a huge price as has his family. It was good to know the 'new' Art Schlichter, humble, wise, and determined to help others with this addiction.God bless him.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth
This book is awesome, having never seen Art Schlichter play and always hearing about him, I had to read this book.Schlichter did not hold back in this book at all, he is brutally honest about everything. Why would he make this stuff up?I highly recommend this book to any Buckeye fan or any one who gambles.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a home run!
This was one of those books I just couldn't put down. I kept reading until my eyes gave out. I have had my own addiction issues mainly with alcohol and to a lesser degree sports betting and the book had me spellbound. I was fascinated with Art's meteoric rise through the ranks of high school and college football, culminating with being the #4 pick in the NFL draft. It was equally shocking to see Art's free fall, eventually winding up in a maximum security prison. In between there's more insanity than you could ever imagine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Small town football hero goes bad
Someone gave me this book to read because I am an Ohio State alum and a big OSU football fan.Reading this book is like watching a slow moving train wreak, the outcome never in doubt and of interest only because it happened in your back yard. It chronicles the sad, shallow life of All-American Quarterback Art Schlichter, who stole from his family and friends so that he could indulge in his reckless gambling compulsion and in the process destroyed the lives of himself and his family.

From this book I learned that Mr.Schlichter lived most of his life as a pampered, self centered jock who had a penchant for betting money on the horses at Beulah Park and Scioto Downs and transitioned to compulsive betting on all sports.Supporting him was a cast of facilatating syncophants including family members, high school chums, small time bookies, football coaches and university administrators; each one did their share to contribute to the tragedy and each had something to gain by covering up Schlichter's behavior, at least initially. Eventually all would end up looking foolish and complacent.

Art demonstates scant legitimate remorse for stealing from others nor for the suffering he caused to his family and friends. He kept doing the same criminal acts repetitively for decades, interrupted occasionlly with incarceration by the judicial system.I would describe him as a glib sociopath who is very good at misleading people. For that reason, I find it hard to know what to believe in this autobiography.I don't buy his "illness" justification for his gambling problems either.

There is sufficient dirty linen in the book to satisfy the prurient interests of OSU football program haters. You will find the names of legendary OSU football coaches, players, cheerleaders and even the Rose Bowl Queen and no one comes out of this book looking like a hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars Busted
What a great look into the Life of Art Schlichter. It's sad in many ways, yet uplifting as you find yourself pulling for him to beat the gambling demons that have cost him so much in life. This book is about more than football it's about the challenges we all face in life and what happens if we give in to those things that try to master us. There is still hope for Art to suceed in life and be a contributor. I hope he makes it. ... Read more

Product Description
Secret training manuals, magic swords, and flying kung fu masters—these are staples of Chinese martial arts movies and novels, but only secret manuals have a basis in reality. Chinese martial arts masters of the past did indeed write such works, along with manuals for the general public. This collection introduces Western readers to the rich and diverse tradition of these influential texts, rarely available to the English-speaking reader.

Authors Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo, who coauthor a regular column for Classical Fighting Arts magazine, showcase illustrated manuals from the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and the Republican period. Aimed at fans, students, and practitioners, the book explains the principles, techniques, and forms of each system while also placing them in the wider cultural context of Chinese martial arts. Individual chapters cover the history of the manuals, Taiwanese martial arts, the lives and livelihoods of the masters, the Imperial military exams, the significance of the Shaolin Temple, and more. Featuring a wealth of rare photographs of great masters as well as original drawings depicting the intended forms of each discipline, this book offers a multifaceted portrait of Chinese martial arts and their place in Chinese culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Don't read this book if you can't handle the truth
This is a must have book for anyone interested in traditional Chinese martial arts. Finally someone has come out and said much of what needed to be said about the founders of these methods, putting all of those ridiculous myths and legends in their proper perspective. As an author of over 100 articles for Inside Kung Fu Magazine and two of my own books on Baguazhang I have waited many years for a book like this to come along and set the record straight about the tough old men who developed tough combative arts to be used in difficult times.

The chapter on Qi and Qigong is especially important for it gives some interesting definitions of a word that is one of the most misunderstood and overused in Chinese Martial lexicons. I am giving copies of this work to all my instructors teaching in our Baguazhang schools around the world as required reading. It sweeps away the cobwebs and silken decorations to lay the reality of Gong Fu Quan bare for all to see once and for all. Thanks to the authors for this much needed work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book and Fascinating Subject!
As always, Brian Kennedy has produced a fascinating and highly informative work here. As a long-time fan of his articles for various martial arts magazines, I was very happy to see this work come to fruition. I first read his article on this subject in "Dragon Times" and it left me wanting more. And more he gives us! For anyone who wants to actually be educated about all aspects of the Chinese Martial Arts, rather than just being brawlers or fighters, this volume is a must-have. Many thanks Mr. Kennedy!

3-0 out of 5 stars A little like "Myth Busters: Kung Fu Edition"
I have some mixed feelings in regard to this book, but I feel that by and large it deserves a possitive rating. The authors' most obvious purpose in writting is to briefly catalogue a number of historic Chinese martial arts training manuals dating back to the Ming dynasty, but mostly written roughly a century ago.Among these books are books on Taiji, Bagua, generic "boxing", and even one on Western boxing and another on using rope to restrain someone. Each of these books is given a brief description, and illustrations from the book are shown.Often something is said about the author and/or editor of the book, and many times the historic context of the book is given. However, despite the title of this book, these tomes seemed to me to be almost an afterthought. While the first part of the book theoretically sets the scene for the environment in which these books were published, it seems to me that it does more to dispell commonly-held myths than anything else.

I think the first part of the book should be required reading for anyone who fancies themselves as following in the footsteps of the "ancient Shaolin masters".The authors point out that while the Shaolin temples no doubt had a militia in order to guard their land, there is no historic evidence that the temples were a hotbed for martial arts activities.Further, they proceed to analyze the origin of the Shaolin/Wudang distinction, as well as the Northern/Southern and internal/external classifications of Chinese martial arts.Essentially, the first part of this book seems written with the intent to dispell all popular myths about the Chinese martial arts. For that, I applaud the effort. However, as at least one other reviewer has pointed out, there is a remarkable lack of cited sources in this section. The entire argument against these popular myths seems to hinge on one or two books written in the early 1900's, which point out that Chinese books tend to borrow material from each other quite readily without citing their sources. So while I find the authors' version of historic Chinese martial arts culture to be a much more probable one, I must confess that they offer little evidence to support this view.

I have to say that this *is* one of my favorite books, and anyone interested in the history of Eastern martial arts and specifically Chinese martial arts would do well to own it.But I can't find it's "mythbusting" assertions supported well enough to give it more than three stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing
This book is a relief in todays world of Martial Arts liars, thieves, and charlatans. With a field that fosters making claims of magic and mystical powers, or in the least allowing the students or practitioners to go unfettered and run rampant with thoughts of Hollywood, Hong Kong, or Wu Xia Kung Fu this is a breath of fresh air.If you want solid groundwork for dispelling the myths and mysticisms of Chinese Martial Arts then this is the book for you.Well researched and full of great references, Mr. Kennedy offers an oft-times 'no holds barred' spotlight on an industry, sub-culture, phenomenon that has thrived in the shadows for too long. It's about time a book like this was published!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for every teacher who wants to go beyond the legends
It happens people think this book is the summa of the Chinese Kung Fu Manuals. Wrong.
This book analyzes the huge work done in Taiwan from the Lion pub on reissuing old CMA manuals in their original print. Some of them are today also available in English thanks to Tim Cartmell. The high value of this book is on analyzing the history and development of CMA by using documentation and not legends. The high value of this book is to tell the story of CMA historians as well as CMA master and famous people.
The way they lived, the way the got money...
Then the authors go trough the several manual by analyzing the content related to the time and environment when they were published.
Also exciting is the analysis of the different manual organization and the didactics related to the books: form the "hammering the back" body conditioning to the first schedule for drills. This book enlightens a reality a lot of practitioners wouldn't like to see by making more human and real. A book I find very exciting to read and I strongly advice to every western master who seriously want to know something more than legends about the CMA.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to a topic that is seldom talked about with fighters.
I have had an opportunity to review this author's numerous books and videos and I have found most of them are fantastic. This fine book was no exception. It covers a topic that is seldom covered in books and videos on fighting and self-defense.This book has numerous drills that will help anyone improve their chances in the ring or on the street. All things considered, this is a book that should be read by anyone who is interested in improving their timing and speed skills both in the ring and in street combat.Rating: 4 Stars.Joseph J. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for any marial artist.
I wanted to make sure I read all the way through it before getting the review done.If you are a practicing martial artist, This is a good reference book.It has drills, insights, and pointers.Depending on how good your instructor is, most of this might be nothing but a review, or it might totally change they way you think of sparring and fighting.

Either way, worth having.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful for beginners
The book is well written and the ideas are easy to understand.Beginners and intermediate martial artists should read it to better understand and orient their training. Those who are more advanced or experienced should have figured these things out or they should at least reconsider their status as such.
Although I almost did not find new stuff in the book to add to my training, it is reassuring to see that the things I learned during 13 years of martial arts are confirmed by true experts a co-authors.
The only "negative" comment is that I wish it would clarify that it is aimed at novice or intermediate students.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Haven't Read This Book, You Really Should Read It Now
Okay, this is probably going to be one of the easiest reviews I have ever written. Why you ask? Well it's really rather simple. This book is loaded with so much good information, that even the couple of questionable comments that, in my opinion, the author has on a couple of subjects is extremely minor and really not truly relevant to the overall worthiness of this fantastic book.

I could spend several more paragraphs giving you a educated and intelligent overview of the material presented by the author, but really what's the point! This book is so well done and literally has valuable information on darn near every page that to sit and dissect it would be fruitless and pointless.

As I stated earlier, there are a couple of points of contention that I have with some of the author's comments concerning justification in the use of force and ramifications of the use of force, but that I fear is merely a matter of personal opinion and personal experience. While I don't necessarily disagree with what the author is saying, I do feel that there is another viewpoint that needs to be looked at.

If you are reading this review and haven't read this book, stop reading this right now and click on the link to purchase this book. I guarantee you that you won't regret it. I know I didn't!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas - not so good techniques
Not a bad book. it gave me lots to think about in my training.
the concepts contained in the book are excellent - some of the techniques they talk about and demonstrate (in pictures) seem a bit old school. without testing them and practicing them it is all just theory anyway.
got to practice this stuff. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Set!!!
Great dvd! Vicory Belt Delivers. All 8 Discs cover every aspect of the game. There are 8 discs in total 5 Silva discs and 3 Nogueira discs called Mixed Martial Arts the Ultimate Set plus 2 books one by Silva and one by Nogueira. Silva's last two discs will be released soon one in the next month (Muay Thai Clinch) the other a little later (Muay Thai Strikes) and then the Clinch book. Definitly worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lays the foundation for the mma guard
There're several books out there that cover the guard; but they're mainly for sport BJJ. The rubber guard has had success with guys like Shinya Akoi over in Japan; but until any fighter comes even close to having an actual battle contested guard like Nogueira's; this book should absloutely be your first one in your collection to build a foundation for the guard in mma. Note: I'm not necesserialy knocking the X-guard,rubber guard,The Other guard books;I own them all and they're very good. It's just that for street fighting or mma this should be in my opinion your first stop!

4-0 out of 5 stars If this is your first book ...
if this is your first book that you own then it is 5 stars. but u r like the rest of us who hv been exposed to very many bjj/mma books in the market nowadays then only the only portion of the book is worthwhile - control within guards, the rest of the book is nothing new.

5-0 out of 5 stars You NEED this book!!!
This is THE book that I have been looking for in terms of working from the guard. Not only does he show you three different view points for each and every step of a move, he also explains in great detail about each move that I do not think other books on jiu-jitsu have done. I find these details are what really make pulling off a technique a success or a failure. He covers sweeps, armbars, chokes, tranistions, combinations and mounts from three different positions from closed guard, three different positions from half guard and finally one position in downed guard, a total of 7 different guard positions to work from. If you either fight MMA or are just a jiu-jitsu player, you NEED this book as I feel it will fill in tons of gaps in anyone's guard game and jiu-jitsu game in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars bloody good
This book encompasses all that BJJ is good in MMA. I really enjoyed this book and a highly usable book that gives a rock solid game plan for BJJ in MMA. I highly recommend to any BJJ, MMA or submission fighter. ... Read more
