4-0 out of 5 stars Lesson in Playing Card History
Antique Playhing Cars: A Pictorial History provided much insight into many eras in past history. It is primarily a picture book so the reader must investigate the deeper meanings and significance of the various selections on their own. There are several pages of black outlines which the reader could copy and enlarge so that adding colors could provide some amusement. The serious historian can research the selection of colors but as for myself, I was content just to examine the cards as they were presented.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice gift
Bought this as a gift for my brother--great color and black and white pictures throughout of "old" decks of cards. He loved it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sparse but beautiful
This Treasury of playing cards is sparse on text or history, but there is an abundance of beautiful pages full of playing cards to look at and admire. If you appreciate and admire the artwork of playing cards this is a wonderful book. ... Read more

Supermoviedeals is an absolutely worthless seller.I've sent them e-mails about never receiving the above product only to get one response of apology, but then nothing else.Take your chances buying from them.

I gave it three stars to at least not mess up the rating on the book.

Product Description
That old 1962-vintage Willie Mays baseball trading card may be the ticket to a college education, and a mint-condition ticket stub from the first Super Bowl may pay for 50-yard-line seats for many a Super Bowl to come. You may never know unless you grab yourself a copy of Sports Memorabilia For Dummies and get wise to the ins and outs of collecting sports memorabilia.Decide what to collect, and what not to collect -- from baseball cards and ticket stubs to well-worn football jerseys and stadium scoreboards -- as you master the savvy bargaining and pricing techniques to get the best deals on the sports memorabilia you want. Avoid fakes, forgeries, and far-fetched offers as you build your collection, and educate yourself as you increase your enjoyment of collecting and the thrill of the sport itself. And here's a little extra incentive: According to a 1988 study in Money magazine, from 1980 to 1987, the blue-chip value of baseball cards outperformed stocks, bonds, and Treasury bills. So what'll it be? More Microsoft stock or that 1952 Mickey Mantle card? You make the call.Amazon.com Review
Betting your investment portfolio on a stockpile of rookiecards? Not so fast, says Pete Williams, author of SportsMemorabilia for Dummies. Even though baseball cards as aninvestment vehicle outperformed stocks, bonds, and treasury bills from1980 to 1987, remember the familiar disclaimer that past performanceis not indicative of future returns. While the collecting mania isstill in full bloom, Williams wants everyone to know that the powercurve of collectibles as an investment is past its peak. Withinvestment dollars finding other homes, it's a wonderful time to startcollecting. Prices are down and there is more merchandise for the restof us.

This latest addition to the ubiquitous Dummies seriesdetails the finer points of memorabilia collecting by an insider. PeteWilliams, writer and columnist for USA Today's Baseball Weekly, parlays his work as a beat reporter covering the sports-collectingbusiness into a primer that separates the investment-fueled hype fromthe enjoyment that fans can derive from collectibles.

This volume, like the other For Dummies books, uses an extremely readable andlighthearted approach to an otherwise overwhelming topic. Williamsguides us step by step through getting started and sifting out what tocollect, to the pitfalls and scams of unscrupulous dealers, andincludes an exhaustive appendix of resources. This volume is a mustfor anyone wanting to stay abreast of the "collecting"industry. --Tim Shannon ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Eastie's folly
Certainly will not order anything else that has this seller's name involved.
I ordered 2 books at the same time from 2 different sellers..I received one in 3 days and waited 30 days to discover that this individual did not ship me anything. To get my money back, I had to contact the seller...of course, he did not even reply, I then had to file a claim with Amazon for a refund. This all started Feb 1st and I still do not have my money nor do I have the book I want...sure won't consider this bum again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Annual Beckett Basketball
A good price, but quality control was sleeping when this was printed!A few pages were wrinkled and ink was messy makeing it difficult to read. Seems each year they leave more out of the publication.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basketball Price Guide
We have been buying this price guide since it's inception but the quality and content has been dropping the last few years. I suppose they are trying to keep the price down, but they are omitting and reducing too much. I would say though, until someone comes up with something more complete, it's the one to buy.

3-0 out of 5 stars *RAINED-OUTGAMES sendFanstothisINDOORSPORT*
Has the allure of sports cards drawn you and/or other fanatics in your family to collecting? The sub-title of "Cool Cards" implies CREATIVITY ~ BUT this is simply a GUIDE TO COLLECTING.

It appears to cover all the angles that appeal to (mostly) young boys & men. Of course there are also girls who collect sets of cards: from mini pet animals to Olympic stars, and Pokemon to Zoo Specimens, with maybe some cheerleaders thrown in.

Some of the author's tips include a Glossary, and pages about Organization & Storage. The"Elements of a Sports Card"could even apply to "ARTIST CARDS" which are ONLY traded. Enthusiasts who make & trade "atc" should take a detour to their libraries AND/OR amazon.com's helpful listings of books available under that more specialized (and CREATIVE) hobby.

There are just 32 pages in the book, offering some history tid-bits and pictorial highlights. Anders Hanson has compiled this overview for young ((elementary - middle school)) collectors, or "would-be's" and it is part of a popular series often found in libraries. If you scrollthrough Google OR amazon.com, you might locate a similar title with a more interesting format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I found the guide to be very useful in determining the value of my card collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beckett Card Guide
The publication turned out to be a gem, especially as a guide for the early football cards. Highly recommend this guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Bible"
My title is not taken in vain. Beckett's is the essential authority on the subject of football sports cards. Released updated every year it provides the latest price information required to maintain either one's collection or inventory. Eric

4-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Comprehensive Guides On The Market
The Beckett Guides are the most popular guides in the world, bar none. And what I've always liked about Beckett is the depth of information contained in his guides. With this one, you get listings of sets from as far back as the late 1800's to 2001. Now please note before I go any further, if you buy this guide and by chance your card or set is not listed, it does not mean your card(s) are worthless, it simply means that what you have may not currently be receiving alot of market activity, or may be a card or cards that aren't currently known to exist. You must realize there are virtually thousands of sets on the market and newer ones coming out every week by various companies, so it is almost impossible to keep up with every one produced. So Beckett concentrates on sets that are both known to exist and have heavy market activity. Oh and one more thing, if you have rubber bands around your cards, please get rid of them. Go to your local card shop or go online and get some card holders. Condition is a key element in a cards worth, and rubber bands can cause severe damage to cards. Now, as for this book, Beckett has sets listed in ABC order and lists the individual cards of the set. So if you are putting together a set, and you see yours listed in this guide, you have the perfect checklist to keep up with what you do and do not have. For each set listed, there's a little bit of information included, and there may be production numbers included in the trivia. Beckett shows you how to collect, how to preserve your cards, how to determine condition, shares football card terminology, and has other interesting facts about football card collecting. Ahh to go to a game and load up on hotdogs. Collecting football cards brings me back to the time when I was in high school and went to the games to pull for my home team (and yes, I ate a lot of hot dogs then too). Collecting football cards make me think about the times when me and my dad would watch a game together, screaming at the players to run run run. So as I'm sure you already know, collecting football cards for most people is more than just an investment. And when I look through this Beckett guide, I see lots of cards that came out when I was younger, and they bring me back to a time(The late 60's, The 70's, and early 80's) when playing football was one of the things I loved to do the most. Beckett guides have remained the most sought after guides since the 80's and are used the world over. Some of the brands of cards you will find in this edition include Fleer, Upper Deck, Topps, Score, Playoff, and Donruss. Again, there are many other brands listed in the guide, but these are some of the most heavily traded ones. This book is a valuable tool for any true football card collector.

4-0 out of 5 stars You could wait until next year but.......
I needed a new price guide and I wanted a very recent one.I figured I could wait until 2001 but I desided I would get it now(this guide is great quality and has all of my cards listed in itand I have tons of cards!). ... Read more

Product Description

When award-winning journalist Dave Jamieson’s parents sold his childhood home a few years ago, he rediscovered a prized boyhood possession: his baseball card collection. Now was the time to cash in on the “investments” of his youth. But all the card shops had closed, and cards were selling for next to nothing online. What had happened? In Mint Condition, his fascinating, eye-opening, endlessly entertaining book, Jamieson finds the answer by tracing the complete story of this beloved piece of American childhood. Picture cards had long been used for advertising, but after the Civil War, tobacco companies started slipping them into cigarette packs as collector’s items. Before long, the cards were wagging the cigarettes. In the 1930s, cards helped gum and candy makers survive the Great Depression. In the 1960s, royalties from cards helped transform the baseball players association into one of the country’s most powerful unions, dramatically altering the game. In the ’80s and ’90s, cards went through a spectacular bubble, becoming a billion-dollar-a-year industry before all but disappearing, surviving today as the rarified preserve of adult collectors. Mint Condition is charming, original history brimming with colorful characters, sure to delight baseball fans and collectors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and Informative
I started collecting baseball cards in 1968 and I thought I knew pretty much about the hobby. This book quintupled my education in a short, thoroughly enjoyable week.Jamieson delivers the good, the bad, and the ugly -- as he promised in his introduction -- and left me both hopeful and concerned about the future of cards.

This book should be of interest not only to those who have continued to dabble in the hobby, but also those who just want to re-visit a childhood passion with greater understanding and context to their own experiences. It is also a great set of case studies about business, from product development to marketing to consumer research to collusion to monopoly.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book to be enjoyed by collectors or non-collectors alike.
This book is a fantastic read.It gives you an in depth and colorful history of baseball cards from the beginning to the present. The history of the baseball cards and card collecting laid out in this book brings back a nostalgia that makes you want to be a kid again looking for that perfect card.It made me look at my old collection and remember how much fun it was collecting, organizing and trading cards as a kid.The history on cards from the 1800-early 1900 is fantastic.Laying out how the old Tobacco and Gum companies started putting cards in their products as a selling point. How Other cards such as Horrors of War and the Mars Attacks cards were put out.You will learn about the famous Wagner card and the history of the card as it moved from owner to owner and eventually sold for a record $ amount. The book even touches on cards that are altered and counterfeit.

Again, a great read for collector and non-collectors alike.I loan this book out to whomever is willing to give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars For some it was ALWAYS a business...
I "inherited" my first 52 Topps from a friend whose Mom was probably sick of moving them.Barry Wallach later became a CPA and his future success was demonstrated in the small notebook in which he recorded every player's card by number. He meticulously collected this data while he managed his collection.I've tried several times to find him to return this childhood keepsake. Most of us collected the cards as a first love.....some, however, were onto its' financial value long before it became a national obsession.
The same thing that you might learn from this book was pointed out to us in "Toy Story".......USE, ENJOY, WEAR THE HELL out of your childhood things.....you can't trade them in for your youth anyhow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like my cards, this book will be with me forever...
This is the book that many of us have been waiting for, if not outright then at least in our imaginations.Jamieson delves mightily into a subject that was so near to the heart of many a childhood (and let's face it, adulthood as well.)

I am awed by the amount of research performed by the author. He tracks down and interviews dozens of a dying breed, those who were around in the early days of the card explosion.Additionally, he does not leave aside those who were key to the industry/hobby but who are no longer alive. He seems to have gone to great lengths to provide a thorough accounting of the product's evolution, making many a trek to review various collections of cards and, by extension, other pop culture.

I am further wowed by Jamieson's ability to translate his research in such a fascinating and vivid way.In fact, the author's accounts of some of the works he has seen has piqued my curiosity enough to seek these trips out myself.Other than in a travel magazine, how often do you read about a place or thing, and the description is so interesting that you then have to see it for yourself? For me, this is a first, and what makes this idea even more preposterous is that some of the items that Jamieson mentions were merely extensions of his research and had before held little interest to me.

Though I read non-fiction more than fiction, I find myself periodically needing to lay the non-fiction aside for a day or two before picking it up again. Not this book:I could not put it down.

Thanks, Dave, for a great read.Much like pulling my cards out from their closet every few years, I suspect that I will again be pulling your book off the shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars An obession explained
I never collected baseball cards as a kid (I spent my allowance money in the 1960s on comic books). i did start collecting as an adult, getting into the hobby just before the 'baseball card as an investment' craze took off. I never believed that any of those cards I bought in the 1980s was ever going to be worth any money. I collected because I liked baseball, and, as long-time Topps card designer, Woody Gelman, is quoted in the book because I had the "collecting disease". 25 years later and I'm still collecting, for much the same reason. This book is a pretty good summation of 100 or so yearsof baseball card collecting. Some of the material is duplicative of material found in "The Card" by Michael O'Keefee and Teri Thompson. But "The Card" is mostly about the 1909 Honus Wagner card while Jamieson's book is more broadly focused. This book will interest anyone involved in the hobby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beckett Baseball
The almanac is a must for all card collectors and Beckett Baseball is the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars beckett review
this book has it all. It has very concise lists of baseball cards. My husband uses it every day when cataloging his cards. It was worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any serious baseball card collector
the 2005 edition of Beckett Almanac Of Baseball Cards And Collectibles, which even includes Canadian cards from 1912 to modern times - and coins, pins, stickers, team yearbooks and more. There are thousands of photos which lend to easy identification even in black and white, there are card grading tips and guides for beginners, and each section is introduced with a specific set of notes or collector's tips. Conclude with a glossary of hobby terms and series indexes and you have a top pick which represents a virtual 'bible' - and a must for any serious baseball card collector.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference, Why Publish The Beckett Annual?
An absolute must for the advanced collector.

This comprehensive volume combined with Krause's Annual Standard Catalog Of Baseball Cards, are the two most important tools for anyone serious about baseball card collecting.

My only gripe is Beckett simultaneously publishing their inferior 'Baseball Annual' at the same time. It's clearly inferior to their Almanac and borders on customer abuse offering a "lite" version for the ignorant just to make more money.

Still, that problem issue aside, the Almanac is a must-have if you're going take your collection to the next level.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Baseball Cards
If you collect baseball cards you absolutely must have this book.It catalogs virtually every baseball card ever made, including variations and errors.

Why only four stars and not five?Subtle reasons, mostly. The main reason is that this book, despite being released recently, does not do a very good job of covering the professionally graded baseball card market. This is even more surprising as Beckett does have a grading service of their own.As such, the sections covering the history of baseball cards and how to grade cards is lacking and is pretty much a reprint of what's been appearing in Beckett books like this one for over fifteen years. They really could have done a better job of modernizing those sections.

However, as a reference book to help identity cards and give approximate values, this book cannot be beat.Buy it now! ... Read more
