5-0 out of 5 stars Read First Version, am buy this Version
Excellent Read.I am a U11 and U8 coach and this book is writen for High School and College coaching, however, it brings great insight (speeking as a player) that other books do not talk about.Excellent Read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent at every level
This book is good.

I accidentally bought two copies.I brought one to practice and showed it to a couple coaches whose teams were practicing nearby to see if they'd be interested in buying it from me.They leafed through it, and in seconds were engaged in a friendly but quite serious argument about who would get to buy it from me.

This book is really good.

It has made a huge difference in how I approach coaching. It is at once personable and professional. The scope is very broad, covering technical skills, tactical considerations, and some strategic discussion. Each topic is presented clearly and in startling depth.Every coach or player will learn a lot about the game here.

What is particularly unique and useful about this book is that it discusses in detail how to approach a season -- how to prepare before the season starts, how to engage a team from the first, what sort of considerations are important at what times, how to approach the off season. It focuses not only on the game, but the role of a coach as an influence on a young life.

This book is really, really good!!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview on coaching soccer
I coach a youth team (12-18 yrs old). This book gives me a good overview and understanding of what is required in coaching. Two keys to successful coaching: passion and knowledge. A good, motivating coach is one whomanages to help his team to overachieve. A negative, critical coach willsee his team underachieve. The author's love and respect for his playershas transformed my approach to coaching. I have learned that people don'tcare how much you know, until they know how much you care.

Secondly, thisbook provides reasonable information on defensive and offensive tactics. Ihave been playing soccer for over 15 years in various leagues. But it wasnot until I read this book that I understood the game so much more. I alsohelps me to appreciate soccer. The defensive habits: covering goalside, inside and support are actually the foundation for attack as well. If youcan get your team to play well with the basic defending habits, they willbe able to grasp attacking formation and habits as well.

This book is amust read for all beginner and intermediate coach. It gives a greatoverview of soccer coaching. But you will probably need other resources formore help on more technical help: set pieces, different formation (4-4-2),(4-3-3). This book talks extensively on 3-5-2 formation, which is a directand very flexible formation actually.

Thanks to Roy Rees for this book!Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding presentation with thorough coverage.
This is a must for coaches of all levels. It is well organized, easy reading with many great personal insights. The author is very thorough and has the chapters orginized. It is easy to follow and easy to go back andfind topics for reference later.I highly reccomend this for anyone who isserious about coaching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, covering soccer coaching from A-Z.
In the past three years of coaching soccer I have read about two dozen books on the topic. This is the best I have found. This book covers some of the topics that I have searched in vain for such as preparing for matchesand evaluating players. I recommend it highly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars Are Insufficient
You've read, digested and implemented Jim Thompson's Positive Coaching materials. Now take a Graduate Course.

Bruce Brown's book is filled with wonderful ideas on how to create a sports culture where individuals and teams maximize the personal growth that is possible through athletics.

Personal favorites include sections on the qualities of "Great Athletes" - successfully introduced to players as young as 11(and, more importantly their parents) - about the choices that athleted make.Similarly "Great Teams" explores the qualities found in the most successful teams."Positive Conditioning" is an eye-opener (imaging what happens when the winning team in a game at practice does 20 extra push-ups) as well as great team-building exercises such as "Spotlighting".The section on how parents can be helpful participants in the process is also worthwhile.

Run, don't walk (can you do that on-line?) to get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loaded With Ideas
Easily worth the money, this book is amazing. It poses great questions to coaches about why they coach and what they hope to accomplish, methods to teach character traits, and a wonderful section on using conditioning positively, to name a few sections. The book is geared primarily towards junior high or high school programs, and really has some great ideas for a sports program.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every coach needs to read this book!!
This book is essential for every coach in any sport. Bruce Brown does an excellent job of hitting on the issues of what coaches need to think about, but so often get missed in the whole scheme of things. Coaching is so much more than just knowing the particular x's and o's, and reading this book helps the present or future coach realize that. I would recommend Teaching Character Through Sport to any coach of any sport!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Youth Basketball Coach's Primer...Fundamental and Flexible
I picked up this book last night at a local library, hoping to find one or two new drills for my 6th Grade Girls basketball team. From the look of its cover, I expected that the focus would be on "beginner level" coaching and player development, such as how to dribble, shoot, and defend. Although the book started slowly, with explanations of coaching philosophies and how to work with children (valuable information,of course), I was pleased to find a series of drills and skill development tools that I could use at the 6th Grade level. The drills were coded as appropriate for "Beginner", "Intermediate", and Advanced" levels of play, with several of them building on the prior in such a way that when you, as a coach, have different skill levels on your team, you could use whichever level was appropriate for the player(s) working on the skill/drill. There are also a number of practical sections on "Error Detection and Correction" that can help coaches identify when skills need some "fine tuning" with recommendations as to how to go about it within the framework of the skill/drill being taught.

I would recommend this book to other coaches looking for simple, yet effective methods of instructing basketball fundamentals for players at different levels of skill and understanding of the game. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the thinking Coach
I got this book just as I was about to coach a new teeball team and found its insight very helpful. Not a book about what drills to use but about motivation, handling people and protecting peoples love of the sport.More cerebral than I would expect in a coaching book. I used much of the material in my business career. Now I am starting his next book, "Shooting in the Dark".

5-0 out of 5 stars Turn your coaching career around like this book turned mine.
I coach volleyball in grade school and junior high school, and I usually get the "B teams" (the leftovers who are not as talented as the girls on the "A" team.) Therefore, if there ever was a cryingneed for a book on how to coach these types of athletes, this book morethan served its purpose for me. Actually, this book had a positive effecton me since it saved my coaching career.

Don't get me wrong, though, this book will turn around any coach's career whether he has an A or a Bteam. I coached a group of 13 and 14 year old softball players the yearthat I purchased this book. At the beginning of the season, the only teamthese girls could beat was themselves; in fact, that was primarily thereason they were losing was the fact that they were beating themselves!Well, after one mediocre game, I sat the girls down on the bench andinstead of reading them the riot act, I took to heart a suggestion by theauthor. I emphasized all the positive aspects of the game they played justto show these girls that they were capable of doing some positive things. Idid this after each game from then on, win or lose. Wouldn't you know it,these same rag tag girls lost the last the last game of the season: thecity championship game by one run (to a team that annihilated them by 12runs in the first game of that season.) This was an example of positivecoaching, and I've used everything in this book to my advantage to become asuccessful POSITIVE coach. Thanks Mr. Thompson for turning my careeraround!

5-0 out of 5 stars HS Coach Reviewer - Please Stay in MI and Out of VA
I don't doubt for a minute that you completely missed the theme and messages of this book - you expose your true colors and attitudes towards kids with your "cross-eyed, overweight child" and "fat, blind kid" pejoratives."Players must understand their skilllevel limits them" - I can hear you now getting that message (loudly, clearly and strongly, no doubt to toughen them up for the "realworld" - yeah, right) across to young adults on a daily basis.Whatmagic you must weave in the lives of these young people. If thegeneralizations fit, go ahead and wear them - clearly you have no use forany child that isn't contributing to that bottom line (for you) - WIN. Rest easy that your opinion is the dominant one in the youth coachingranks, however - and thus the need for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important guide for influencing kids in sports.
The reader from Trenton, Michigan missed the pointof this book. Readers of that review should carefully consider the source and its use of hateful ideas and language. This is an excellent book for amateur coaches of kids.It teaches how to interact with kids and how to motivate them to do theirbest without resorting to screaming and put-downs. If you are a coach orparent, this will be both fun to read and useful to learn from.

3-0 out of 5 stars A must-read in the politcally-correct era of youth sports
As a high school coach for over ten years, I have always looked for new and unique ways to motivate my players.I hoped that this book would generatefresh, creative alternatives.Instead, I was served a 400-pageliberal athletic manifesto.Don't get me wrong; I believe in utilizingpositive motivational strategies and teaching techniques with my players. If like me, you believe that winning is actually an important aspect ofathletic competition, you will find yourself at odds with the author fromthe introduction.Perhaps in the youth leagues, rules demanding equalplaying time that foster an "everyone is a star" attitude areeffective. At the higher levels, these ideas become highly ineffectual(too many chiefs and not enough indians).Eventually, players mustunderstand that their skill level (or lack thereof) limits them to a lesserrole as a reserve or practice player. While the author offers sound ideasfor communicating with players, the techniques are just another by-productof sixties liberalism run amuck.I agree with the author that manychildren have enjoyed a less-than-successful athletic career based on poorcoaching; and I'm sure I could have been a surgeon if only my Cub Scout denmother was better with her pocketknife. The truth of the matter is thatmost kids don't become good or great athletes because they aren't willingto put in the time and effort necessary to do so (while approaching everyaspect of life in pretty much the same fashion). In my experience, most ofthe problems in youth athletics are caused by adults! The kids know who topick; it's the adult looking to create "fairness" for thecross-eyed, overweight child who can't tie shoes without sustaining acareer-ending injury that creates the problem - first by demanding equalopportunity, second by placing the child in a situation where there islittle chance for success. When the fat, blind kid struggles and feelslike a failure, this is the coaches' fault? It is if you believe in JimThompson's doctrine.I'll admit there are some good ideas for dealing withplayers on an interpersonal level. 3-0 out of 5 stars Quick intro
This is good quick primer but if you have already purchased a few other books, there's no need for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I'm new to coaching PeeWee Football and have a pedestrian knowledge of the sport. This will definitely help you with drills and practice to develop fundementals that the kids will need as they progress to their next level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coaching Book!!
I've found Coaching Youth Football to be an excellent primer for
coaching my son's youth team this season. It includes all the background info a coach might need to build a program and keeps the focus on making the game fun. A positive introduction to this tremendous sport is whatI've found most kids need and most parents want. This book has helped me to teach the boys the game while keeping things fun and safe. A+++.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource for new coaches
When the role of acting as head football coach unexpectedly fell in my lap this season, I bought ASEP's Coaching Youth Football and I can't speak highly enough about it. The misgivings cited by previous reviewers predate this book's 2005 release date and don't seem at all warranted for the 4th Edition.

This book provided me with the nuts and bolts needed to get things rolling from Day One - from plans on how best to structure the first two weeks of practice to promoting teamwork and encouraging fun. The drills and tactics addressed apply well to the youth game - I'm coaching 10 & 11 year olds - but the book also provides background on communicating with parents and planning for safety.

I've found it to be a very complete reference that's worth picking up throughout the season. Very good.

Teaching skills to first time players can be tricky business, but the ASEP youth football book leaves no stone unturned. Having never been a lineman and having limited playing experience (over 20 years ago), the various blocking drills have really helped with my instruction this season. This book helped get me up to speed and I'd highly recommend it to anyone facing the daunting task of coaching kids football for the first time.
