1-0 out of 5 stars don't wasteyour money
This book is a waste of money.I am an assistant coach for a 5th grade girl's volleyball team.I was hoping to learn something new, get some creative ideas on coaching or building teamwork, or at least come away with one good drill. The book offers none of the above.it's very basic and there is nothing original in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teaching this age group
I've been around volleyball for many years as a player, coach and ref, so I wasn't looking for a primer on coaching. Although I've had many opportunities to teach fundamentals in a clinic settingI'm getting my first opportunity to coach JO youth for a season. This book was very helpful in getting me to understand that 14 year old girls are going to need a somewhat different approach than adult and high school players and gave me great ideas to help me be successful with them. The assistant coaches were also given the book sothat we all were, quite literally, on the same page during practices. Everyone thinks it is quite valuable and are committed to trying the book's approach.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Youth Volleyball
Book in excellent condition, took a few weeks to receive.Book is great for those interested in "remembering" how to play volleyball and how to help coach their own children or a team.Good foundation basic information.Helped my daughter with her serves. Would buy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read for starting a youth program
I'm a varsity coach, so stepping back and teaching youth wanted to get a refresher course as we set up our youth program. This book is a big help, though for the experienced coach I would assume they know most of it but could use it as a refresher as well.Beginner coaches it would be great, especially for middle school level and below levels. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Too psychological
As a coach of 5 years, I was very disappointed with this book...My advice is to read Maria Nemeth's "Mastering Life's Energies".The tools are pragmatic, simple, do not cross over into psychotherapizing the client, and get to the root of the problem in a direct, succinct manner.Free association and overuse of metaphors is not as powerful of a method for coaching as it is for therapy.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new under the sun ...
Average book elaborated on nice but not surprising model. I would recommend this to people who want to discover the basics about coaching method. Average theory, models, nice question overview of questions in the end of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very valuable resource
In my view it does not matter where you are in your coaching career, this is a valuable resource.

The book is laid out in three parts. The first section goes into the fundamentals of Co-Active coaching. They discuss the Co-Active (or collaborative) coaching model and the coach client relationship.

Part two goes deals with the components of coaching: Listening, Intuition, Curiosity, Moving forward and deeper and Self-Management.These are the coaching skills and techniques you can develop and/or improve.I believe most coaches have the propensity to be skilled in these areas, but here is some sound practical advice on how to improve these skills and specific ways to use them in the coaching process.

Part three deals with Co-Active coaching principles and practices.Putting parts one and two into practice by going deeper into the theory and using specific examples to illustrate the points.

Then there is what might be the most valuable part of the book - the Coach's Toolkit. The toolkit is an extremely valuable resource containing forms and exercises that any coach can put to great use in their business. There are specific exercises, client interview forms, planning checklist, client profile and many, many other forms.

In addition there is a CD which has two practice coaching session in audio format as well as all the forms from the Coach's Toolkit in PDF format.

If you are serious about your coaching business, this is a wonderful resource that will save you time and money in running your business. It is also a very handy reference resource to refresh and improve your skills.

2-0 out of 5 stars Blind leading the blind
To their credit, the authors of this text do address the larger issues of the values that are behind the client's agenda, and they attempt to justify their approach by seeking those as the larger goal underneath the particular task(s) for which they may be engaged. Despite their efforts, this book reflects all of the philosophical objections one can raise when value neutral counseling or coaching is promoted.

No one can offer an unbiased worldview when approaching the issues, choices, and problems of life (my own preconceptions are admittedly Christian). The coach will inevitably bring his own presuppositions to the process of coaching. The authors are no exception. Beginning with their discussion of Balance in Chapter 1, they attempt to justify human wisdom about what is important in life, defining it as what is truly important to the client. They make their own value judgment that balance is, of itself, a worthy goal, without questioning exactly what is weighed. It is my view that if Christian values are not the basis of coaching, then the blind are leading the blind to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic (to combine metaphors).

This is aptly illustrated by the ostensibly unbiased view the coach is to take about the client's methods in achieving his goals (see "Spaciousness" p.17). The coach is completely detached from any judgments about means or ends "so long as the client continues to move toward the results the client wants. This `end justifies the means' argument is bad enough, but apparently not even the end is open to question. Where conscience might operate, the authors position might be construed as labeling it a "gremlin".

The importance of good listening skills led to a discussion of something presented as "Level 3 Listening". There are several problems with this technique as presented. It seems to be a synthesis of the coach and client's mental process - a rather mystical concept - that is not very well defined. It seems to offer rather fertile ground for the injection of the coach's bias. It is later presented under the category of direct observation, which raises the question of who is really being observed, the coach or the client?

Values are directly addressed in Chapter 8 "Client Fulfillment". Space does not permit a complete dissection of the authors' views here, but several points are worthy of note. Statements like "values are not morals.... are not principles" (p.119) are at the heart of the problem with their approach. Their view that "what is to be admired is not the value itself, but your client's ability to live that value fully in his life" is, quite simply, shocking. By that logic the client's fulfillment of his value of personal power would lead to a sense of "rightness" when he betrays his co-worker.

I'll end my response to this book by noting that the description of Process Coaching (pp.143-156) strongly resembles gestalt psychotherapy. This is a particularly new age approach that was probably to be expected in this book. As the authors pronounced "it's the process that counts", I was hearing in my mind "Life is a journey, Grasshopper!"

While there was valuable content to be found in this book, I found it to be morally and spiritually blind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Sports Bible
Dan Doyle has written an amazing sports bible for everyone from the parents of youngsters approaching sports for the first time, to the parents of talented Division I prospects. Along the way meticulously researched advice and factual examples abound for everyone. As a teacher I loved the clear instructions and the ethics espoused for parents, coaches, and children alike. As a parent I only wish that I could have gotten his invaluable advice twenty years earlier when my children first went through all the issues he expands upon from good/bad coaches to parental input to sportsmanship to balancing numerous sports to, in our case, college advice for the Division III student-athlete and parent. Kudos to Dan Doyle and to this great book- a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for sports parents and anyone else
Although the title might suggest that this is book is written solely for parents who love sports, that's far from the truth. This is a really good book for parents who are crazy about sports, but also for those who don't know a basketball from a soccer ball. The book covers all of the basics of being a "sports parent," like how to sign your child up for little league and what type of summer camp to enroll them in.For those parents whose kids get more serious, there's plenty of information and advice on navigating high school sports, college scholarships, etc.But most of all, this is a book about parenting. There's a lot of helpful advice on using a kid's sporting experience to teach him or her about hard work, about success and failure, and about competing hard while still treating people fairly. The book is both a practical how-to guide, but also a rich trove of common sense wisdom on raising good kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for any parent of a potential sports mega star.
Child Athletes need a brand of special care to be the best they can be - and "The Encyclopedia of Sports Parenting" is here to help parents do the best that they can for their young athletes so they get the most they can out of their hobbies. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
This book was very informative!I ordered several Volleyball coaching books and found this one to be the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
Sometimes as player it is hard to break down a skill in verbal cues in order to teach beginning players as a coach. This book is great at doing just that!I even took this book to practice and read to my girls out of it.This book introduces a skill, gives lots of pictures of a player going the skill, breaks the skill down into step-by-step actions, gives some verbal cues that you can teach with and then later remind your players with and gives some drills. Also with each skill, the book has a section on teaching beginning players and then a section on breaking bad habits. This is my favorite coaching resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching VB Successfully by Sally Kus
I have probably read most every book on vb published recently, and this book ranks up there at the top alongside Mike Hebert's "Insights & Strategies for Winning Volleyball".Sally covers all aspects of the sport from grassroot to club to college and from starting a program to successfully managing and sustaining a vb program. This book is unexcelled. It gives a step-by-step for setting up a program or a practice. It gives details on all of the vb skills along with appropriate drills and what to look for.Unlike most books on the subject, it is very relevant to today's vb, as it addresses rally scoring, overhand passing, serving from various points along the baseline, backrow hitting, etc.I would recommend it for anyone involved in coaching vb or wanting to improve their game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Coaching Book
This is one of the first coaching books I read. I only have 5 or 6 total. This book is fantastic and is the short cut for coaches that don't have time to read a ton.

Great drills, well laid out, the right attitude we all should have as coaches, and good tactical strategies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Be forewarned - this is for YOUTH basketball - not middle school or high school players!
As the title of my review suggests, this book is for coaches who coach youth leagues for young players grades K-4 or K-5.It is NOT for middle school or high school coaches.

My lone criticism is that information is not included in the title, cover scribing or somehow conveyed in the promotional information.

Having said that, this is an excellent book for coaches who have stepped up to take on the difficult, and different, task of coaching and teaching a youth league basketball team.Coaching a 1st grader is very different from coaching a senior in high school.

The book is really well organized using a organizational model that I wish books written for higher level of play would use. There is a drill matrix that helps coaches organize and pick drills, skills lists, etc.

It covers the essential basics of the game and other key information to help the volunteer coach "survive" dealing with his or her youthful charges.

4-0 out of 5 stars Warning!!!! - for kids ages 5-10
I'm giving it a 4 because frankly I haven't read the book yet (don't want to slam it).I'm about to coach in a 13-14 league and when I received the book yesterday I find out it's targeted to 5-10 year old kids.I wish the Amazon product description pointed that out and I would have ordered a different book. While I'm sure there's some good info I can use, I'm disappointed in not getting what I thought.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special!
I bought this as a gift for my husband and after looking at it, I didn't think it was very good at all. I know it is called "Survival Guide for Coaching Youth Basketball" but I assumed when buying it that it would be targeted towards middle school or high school aged kids. It seems more for young elementary school aged kids. I was really disappointed. I think it would be good if he were couching elementary school aged kids butthis isn't going to be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for parents and coaches!
We have two boys that are playing basketball (grades 7 and 3)and this book really helped us understand the basic skills. Both offensive and defensive skills are shown clearly. If you are a parent thinking about coaching youth basketball this is the book for you! If you are just a parent that wants to understand grade school basketball this is the book for you too! After getting this book we now know what is happening on the court when our boys play, and it makes the game so much more enjoyable. The coaches like that we understand the game better and arenot "coaching" from the bleachers too! Buy this book if you are at all interested in youth basketball...you will not be sorry that you did. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for first time coach
So far this book has been very helpful and quick to read for the first time coach of girls soccer (age 6, 7, 8). If you are trying to get to a club soccer level I think there are other books that may be better but this is ideal for the busy person who is new at coaching.

4-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
for our first time coaching it was really good. the reason for only 4 stars is that there aren't very many drills/exercises that one can do with the kids.

3-0 out of 5 stars An introduction only
This book has some good pointers and some nice basic information about the rules of soccer, basic skills, etc.The information in the book though is probably not good for teams above U7, or for coaches with some experience coaching. The books concentrates on drills (not games!) that are often not very easily translated into real situations that occur in games. This means that when you put the kids on the field against another team, they are going to be unprepared. If you are a new coach with little to no soccer experience, this is a good place to start. If you are looking for anything more I would look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaching Soccer For Dummies
This is a great book for anyone thinking of coaching a soccer team..it is full of great information.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Time Soccer Coach
My 5 year old signed up for instructional soccer, the local parks and rec. deparment needed coaches, next thing you know I'm a soccer coach.Step one, buy a book that will get me started on the right foot, and that's exactly what this book was. This book provided me with the guidelines for dealing with the parents as well as providing me with a refresher on the ins and outs of soccer.I would recommend this to any coach just starting out.If you have previous knowledge of soccer either playing or coaching this may not be the book for you as it is very basic. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
The book is somewhat outdated, refers to freestyle as the "crawl stoke". Nothing is this book will help a first time coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information
This book is a great source of information and ideas for coaching swim.
Currently I coach on an age-group YMCA swim team and I am always looking for new ways to create effective practices. This book is written in an easy to search format and it gives examples that translate easily to 10 year olds!I recommend this book for age group swimming!

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed reaction
This book had some nice ideas in it, but as a first time coach for young swimmers, this book was not terribly helpful to me, since the whole book is geared towards coaching adult swimmers. It covers just about everything else to do with coaching, but not in terrific detail. All in all, it's ok, it has good ideas in, and is probably good for a first book for an adult coach, but you will need more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
I found this book to be very helpful to a first time coach for first-time-on-a-swim-team swimmers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for coaches
This is NOT a useful book for coaches, although it can be helpful for people without a coaching education or a good swimming background. Unfortunately, this book lacks every form of depth and I don't understand why all the reviews until now were extremely positive. Dick Hannula was a great coach, but this isn't a great book. I guess the readers were lead by pride instead of objectivity.
Coaching Swimming Successfully has an attractive title, but is somewhat misleading. While reading, you do get some new thoughts about coaching, but it will not make you a coach successfully.
The book is written with a first-person narrator and would be more interesting if it wasn't, since you will get annoyed after a while by every self-glorification of the writer and his successes. Besides, it's mainly focused on the American swimming school (planning and preparation, club swimming vs. high school swimming, yard pools, etc.) and it lacks some ability for extrapolation for other swimming countries.

The `Coaching Stroke Technique' part is redundant if you are a qualified coach and you still have your textbook from the course.

The book is easy to read, gives some new thoughts and can therefore help you coach more successfully, but it is too superficial and limited for a swimming coach. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for leadership development
Nigro has provided an important resource for developing professionals from upper level executives to line supervisors.Written in an easy to grasp (and therefore implementable) style, I find that the professionals I develop appreciate his direct and common sense approach for bringing out the best in a workforce.

3-0 out of 5 stars My Review
I liked the book, and came away with a top 15 for it. It was helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This One!
I have been required to read 3 books on mentoring for one of my classes and then was required to review and report on another.I examined 5 additional books on mentoring and coaching and this was by far the most complete and readable - in fact, it was the only one that was enjoyable.Mr. Nigro's sense of humor is only outdone by his understanding of how humans operate and his ability to easily explain what so many other authors must fall asleep writing about - how managers can effectively coach and mentor their staff.I highly recommend The Everything Coaching and Mentoring Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Entertaining, and Enlightening
This is a great book on Coaching and Mentoring. It covers a lot of ground on what it takes to manage as a coach in today's corporate milieu. The author displays a keen grasp of the material, along with a good sense of humor, from cover to cover. The examples and case studies in the text always hit their marks.I recommend this book for all coaches and mentors, and all would-be coaches and mentors, too. It's a very thorough introduction to the managing wave of the future. And it's written in a style that is never dull, which is the bane of so many other books on this subject matter. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely, positively, the best hockey coaching book on the market today.
I bought this book when it first came out in 2003 and it is still, by far, the best hockey coaching resource on the market. Even today, whether coaching or writing, when I'm looking for coaching information, Red Gendron's book is still the first one I pull off the shelf to look for answers.

The book is well thought out and well written. While it does contain a fair amount of skills and drills, it is not a skills and drills manual. This book is geared towards those bantam, midget, or high school coach's who are looking to gain deeper understanding and knowledge of systems and tactics as well as the concepts, processes and nomenclature of ice hockey.

USA Hockey Inc. thought so much of this book that they slapped a new cover on it and began using it as their Level-IV coaches manual.

I've been coaching hockey for over a quarter century as well as write a syndicated hockey column called "Hockey from the Neck up" and of all the coaching books I've read over the years the only book that has had more of an influence on my coaching development has been Mike Krzyzewski's "Leading with the Heart" - and that's a basketball book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best hockey book for coaches
This book by far is the most comprehensive for hockey coaches I have found anywhere. You can read it over and over again and get something new from it every time. It may be too much for the beginner coach but there is something in this book for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on coaching hockey that I have seen.
If you are serious about helping kids learn, this book will help you.

This is an fantastic book for someone that has an understanding of hockey.Maybe not so helpful to someone just starting.

Most of the books that I have seen either talk in circles or just draw diagrams. This book is thorough, easy to read and very instructive.

If you are looking to understand the game or systems you are not familiar with, this book will help you.If you are looking for a FEW really good drills, this book will help you.If your team is not quite grasping what you are teaching, this book will help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Hockey Coaching Book Out There!
This is geared for Bantams, Midgets, and High School. But has tons of info and great detail.I basically took the info that applied to my team and made it out team manual.
Systems, drills, coaching advice, how to present, how to motivate, etc... its all in there.

Bottom line, it's a great book.If you're a hockey coach for these levels you need this. Its that good

Keep in mind as a coach you have to know your team and what applies to your team. You cant read this book and expect everything to work.Like most coaching book you have to use the info that applies.Be open, be creative.Don't be a coach who lives inside a book to give him/her the Xs and Os.This is a guide....a great guide. But you have to understand your team first for this to work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dynamite Book for Coaching Midgets
Coaching Hockey Successfully has a loads of valuable information from hockey philosophy (teach your players to create space and time and teach them the concept of support) to good drills to teach your players hockey sense. This book would get five stars but sometimes Gendron loses you e.g. a description of a drill to which he does not have a diagram and one you do not understand. I thought it was my problem until I talked it over with a friend. This book is so valuable. If you are coaching Bantam and above, it's a top notch resource. Thanks, Red! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reference
I am new to the game of lacrosse, but have volunteered to help coach my son's team of beginners (first & second graders). This book was a tremendous help in explaining the general rules, structuring practices, and drills.

The book references a coaching system called the 'Positive Coaches Alliance', which gives great pointers on approaching practices and general coaching philosophies. I have coached soccer for six years and still found some of the coaching methods to be very helpful. Not only for lacrosse, but for caoching in general. I will be applying these techniques to soccer (along with modifying some of the lacrosse drills).

I highly recommend this book as your first lacrosse resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really, really good resource for new coaches
"Coaching Girls Softball" by Kathy Strahan is a great resource for the first time coach. It does not just cover coaching the basic skills of the game, but also such topics as communication with players and parents. It has a great first aid section, and it is one of the few books I have found that covers a coach's liabilities on the field - a subject about which few want to think but everyone should be aware.

Chapters 2 and 3 are most interesting, as they discuss the physical, mental and emotion differences between boys and girls (and how that should affect your coaching style). As a converted baseball coach, I soon learned that needed to know more than "girls have cooties" to become an effective girls' softball coach."Coaching Girls Softball" delivers the best information I've yet seen on the subject of how girls differ from boys and has been invaluable to my own growth as coach.

There are several practical guides and lists within "Coaching Girls Softball" that also set this book apart from others, and make it an excellent reference for every coach.Even though I have been coaching for a while, I still use the "time commitment calendar checklist", "first aid kit content list", and "items to include in your parent letter guide", among others, to help me prepare for each season.

Though written for the beginning coach, Kathy Strahan tends to draw from her college coaching/playing experience for specific examples in the book. This is effective most of the time, but I would have liked to have heard more "in-the-trenches" stories from her recreational league coaching/playing days since that is the target audience for the book.I think more recreational league memories would have made this book even more powerful and useful for the reader than it already is.

A novice coach could not do much better than starting with "Coaching Girls Softball" as their first reference book.Even experienced coaches will find this a great guide for season preparation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I coached t-ball for the last couple of years and now my daughter just moved on to Coach Pitch softball.I didn't want to feel like a complete idiot coaching so I found this book, which seemed like the best option. For me it wasn't.This book would be great if your really doing competitive teams or maybe 10year olds and up.But we are doing community softball with girls of which some have never even picked up a ball before. This book I feel is geared toward older kids.I really wanted a book that would help me teach JUST the basics. This book really just builds on basics and what kids already know. It really goes into bunting (which isn't really aloud yet) and offensive playes and defensive plays I just hope these girls catch a ball that comes near them, how do I teach them how to run a pickle play? There are somethings that I read and I don't really understand them.It is really all about fast pitch, and I would have appreciated some tips for coach pitch, I was always third baseman never pitch and I am having a hard time finding a mom or dad to help out with that so I have to do it with no clue and not even a book that will help. Its a great second step book for girls already familiar with the game and ready for learning plays and what not, not a book for basics though.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the basics
this is a good book for anyone in softball, lots of fundamentals and basics of the game and even a great book for parents of softball players to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This book had everything I needed as a first year softball coach. It's easy to follow with many helpful hints. There are many topics especially the emotional side of working with girls that I had not even thought about.

4-0 out of 5 stars If Your'e A New Coach
This book has been very helpful to me, a new Little League coach. It is a very comprehensive publication to say the least. Before you get to the stuff you were probably buying this book for (i.e. drills, strategies, teaching)it delves into the things you probably didn't even consider (i.e. psychological/medical issues, motivating, discipline and dealing with parents). It has tips and suggestions all over the place for you to ponder.Plenty of illustrations and diagrams.of proper techniques for defense/defense, pitching/batting.A very useful tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just for X's and O's
There is not doubt Coach Wooten was a master of X's and O's and this book certainly covers those aspects of the game.Coach Wooten was probably the best high school coach ever, or at least in modern basketball history. No, you can't go wrong if you buy the book for the X's and O's.

But don't buy it for the X's and O's, buy it for all the other information in the book, like how to organize an entire program and develop YOUR OWN style and philosophy of play and coaching. Those topics are what I found set this book apart.

Game Strategies and Tactics for Basketball: Bench Coaching for Success

5-0 out of 5 stars For My Money, the Best Basketball Coaching Book There Is
During the 15 years that I've been coaching in Middle School, AAU, and Rec Leagues, I've read a lot of books on coaching basketball, some excellent (Dean Smith's "Multiple Offenses and Defenses," and John Wooden's "Practical Modern Basketball" come to mind), and some not so great. The book in my library that's the most dog-eared and smudged is Morgan Wootten's "Coaching Basketball Successfully."For the levels I've coached, I consider this book indispensable. The book is full not just of X's and O's and drills, although there are plenty of those, but also advice on how to organize a team, how to run tryouts, and how to relate to assistants, players, and parents. There are sections on everything from how to put together a game schedule for the season to when to call (and when not to call) timeouts. It's written clearly and concisely and at a perfect level for my needs.Part of my coaching routine every year is that the first week in August, I take "Coaching Basketball Successfully" down from the shelf and read it cover to cover, one more time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for the ages.
No matter how many books I have on basketball I always come back to this one. When great coachs explain every insight they used to be successful it can only make you a better coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for first time coaches

5-0 out of 5 stars Arnsbarger's Coaching Defensive Football
This is a very good book on position reads, techniques and defensive strategies. The Position reads are all diagramed and explained in detail. He also has a section on defending the Shotgun, which I'm going to re-read to try to learn how to better defend the Spread Offenses that are in vogue today; I'm sure there is something in the chapter that I can use. Overall, one of the best books on defensive football I have read. The other that I highly recommend is Fritz Shumur's " Coaching Team Defense; Second Edition. " I have the first edition also and they are both great books. My High School coach played for Fritz and everthing I was taught about defense in High School is in this book. Schemes may change but good fundamentals will never go out of style and that's what both of these coaches are about and the reason that they are in the Hall of Fame.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for any defensive coach
I bought this book when I was just starting my coaching career. As a new coach who was football literate but not extremely well versed in the finer points of the game, it was a very frustrating read. Also, if you coach a team that does not run the 3-4 scheme, it is difficult to apply many of the concepts in the book. However, as I advanced in my career, I found this book invaluable as a resource. If there was a concept I was not familiar with, more often than not it is at least touched upon somewhere in the book. The aspect of the book that most coaches (offensive or defensive) will find helpful are the chapters that deal with pass coverage. The book is very thorough in all aspects of zone, man, and substituted pass coverages (nickle and dime). Since every defense incorporates some or all of these principles, this alone makes the book worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arnsparger Makes It Happen
Without a doubt, Coach Arns is one of the greatest defensive coordinators ever lived. He opens up his "almost" whole system in this book and explains his specific schemes really well and how and where to run them. This book is a MUST for any defensive coach from any level.

Coach Arns also included his views, comments and memories of his successful years from 1A to NFL. I recommend this book to everyone, who plays or coaches defense. If you have never been involved into these "nuts and guts" of football, I'd say; forget it, it would be too much. But if you did, do not think and BUY IT. You won't regret.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book... but needs study.
I consider myself to be a student of the game of football. This belief was put to the test when I purchased this book last year. I consider it a mark of achievement that after a year of study, I finally understand MOST of the concepts within the book.

Unfortunately, that's also a mark of the complexity of those concepts.

The book has incalculable worth to any defensive coach, or any coach interested in developing or improving his current defense. From position-specific techniques and drills to schemes for confusing and attacking the offense, the book covers all aspects of defensive football in exhaustive detail. Unfortunately, much of the knowledge is buried under jargon incomprehensible to the average coach. This is the sole reason I give the book a four of five possible stars.

For the youth coach, this book is going to be a difficult and laborious read. Its value will also be lessened because most of your players just won't be ready for the concepts in it. High school coaches will fare better, but the book is really designed for the junior college to college level, and it is on that level that the principles discussed in it can best be taken advantage of. It goes without saying that the professional coach will also glean much from this text.

I am glad I purchased it, and I do recommend it for all levels of coaches, but be prepared to do some hard thinking as you study the book.

Good luck,

"Coach" Wade

2-0 out of 5 stars Too scheme specific
I found this book to be way too specific to Coach Arnsbarger's scheme. That is great if you are starting a defense from scratch or want to revamp your system. We already have an effective scheme and a successful defense.I was looking for something that would just make us better.I did not find it in this book.Just my two cents. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Full of knowledge coming from the experts
I'm halfway through the book and just about to start coaching.Although it is meant for more experienced coach up to the Olympic level, I find it useful.Lots of knowledge from levels of swimmers and their expectations, responsibilities of coaches in terms of psychology and facility management, and even technic explained in detail, coming from the experts. This book explained the differences between the 2 types of freestyle so clearly and I hope it will help me in sprint training.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I have coached for seven years and I found this book to be a good reminder of what I want to do, and a good start to improving on my faults. This book gives some good work out ideas, and planning, but the strongest section is how each coach should relate themselves to the kids.I found that alot of the ideas that are in the book can directly relate to so many of my kids.A must for new coaches, and a useful tool for us old heads who think we know everything.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
A very good book, you can learn from the experiences of the top coaches in the world from this book! Each chapter is written by a world class swimming coach, this however, in my opinion, makes the book a little confusing for less experienced coaches, because although all coaches apply the same principles of training, each one presents them in a different way.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Coach Recommends It!
This is my first year as being head coach of the girl's swim team where I work and one of my co-workers bought this book for me and I loved it! Whether you're beginning your swim/diving coaching career, or you're an Olympic coach, this book comes it great handy! I learned a lot from this book, and at every meet, it's under my arm or right next to my split or heat sheets! I'd recommend it to any one who wants to coach, is a coach, or wants that extra edge!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE SWIM COACHING BIBLE
This is a very helpfull book for all swimming coaches. It's complexed but very easy to understand and apply recomendations from the coaches of the olympic winners! ... Read more
