Product Description

Sports coaching is a social activity. At its heart lies a complex interaction between coach and athlete played out within the context of sport, itself a socio-culturally defined set of practices. In this ground-breaking book, leading international coaching scholars and coaches argue that an understanding of sociology and social theory can help us better grasp the interactive nature of coaching and consequently assist in demystifying the mythical ‘art’ of the activity.

The Sociology of Sports Coaching establishes an alternative conceptual framework from which to explore sports coaching. It firstly introduces the work of key social theorists, such as Foucault, Goffman and Bourdieu among others, before highlighting the principal themes that link the study of sociology and sports coaching, such as power, interaction, and knowledge and learning. The book also outlines and develops the connections between theory and practice by placing the work of each selected social theorist alongside contemporary views on that work from a current practicing coach.

This is the first book to present a critical sociological perspective of sports coaching and, as such, it represents an important step forward in the professionalisation of the discipline. It is essential reading for any serious student of sports coaching or the sociology of sport, and for any reflective practitioner looking to become a better coach.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for just starting coaches
This book is a good book for coaches who are new to wrestling. It does a good job going over the concepts of coaching, covers topics in coaching that you might not think of on your own. It covers the seven basic skill that the USA Wresting Federation thinks are important. It has some chapters on actual moves and counters but it it very basic. It also talks about teaching skills but is very weak in discussing or showing drills to help solidify the skills. It has a games section at the back but I don't think that is a very good section. The section on developing season and practice plans is very generic. Overall I would recommend this book but only with an additional purchase of a good drills book and maybe a season long practice plan book (not sure if this even exists)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gudie for new and old coaches
This book, now expanded has guidelines for all wrestling coaches and can assist in charting daily drills and learning the signals and the various holds. It also aides coaches into teaching fairplay and sportsmanship amongst young wrestlers, which is important in their daily lives. A great and informative read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little marvel
This book is a little marvel.I got it as I am coaching a group of adult beginners...and it's really helpful....my wrestlers are slow to learn moves and not too agile, so the slow/kids approach is perfect.
A bit disconcerting, all the photos of mere kids doing the moves...but that's to be expected as it's originally a teach-kids book.
But it's really much more than that. It can serve as a premier at any level.
The explanataions are very clear and can usefully be adapted..so often it's difficult to put into words information about moves, stances etc.
This little marvel does it very well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not an effective resource for new coaches.
Although I have coached other sports for years, and in fact have published two books on coaching football, this year is my first as a wrestling coach.

I ordered Coach Gable's book hoping to find a comprehensive collegiate wrestling manual. Unfortunately, what I got is a 'jack of all trades, master of none' book that discusses Greco-Roman, Folkstyle, and Freestyle techniques without emphasis on any of them. Technique descriptions are incredibly vague, (usually limited to three pictures and a few sentences of descriptive matter) and some complex moves are difficult (nigh impossible) to decipher.

Additionally, as an amateur athletic historian I am fascinated by Coach Gable's lengthy sidebars and stories about the athletes of which he is justifiably proud. However, as a new wrestling coach trying to improve his team I find these sidebars simply get in the way and make it impossible to locate the information I need. Additionally, the lack of an index of any kind makes the book close to useless for rapid research-- you cannot, for example, thumb quickly to the back of the book and look for "Double Leg Takedown" in the index.

The organization leaves a great deal to be desired. Wrestling is commonly divided into takedowns (from neutral position), breakdowns (from top position), escapes (from bottom), reversals (from bottom) and pinning combinations (from top). If I were to write a book on this subject it would be divided in such a way. However, Coach Gable instead chose to limit his technique descriptions to "skills and drills" with no real distinction between what is a SKILL (such as a specific takedown) and what is a DRILL (such as a high-hip drill for executing takedowns). This lack of organization makes it further antagonizing to try to locate information quickly. These drills ARE divided into "Drills for when you are on top" and "Drills for when you are on bottom" but all styles of wrestling are lumped together and it is extremely difficult to locate style-specific information.

Furthermore, the techniques described are all highly technical variants ofeach throw, hold, or pinning combination. Instead of the simple double leg takedown in four steps (shoot, grasp, lift, and spin), the vastly more complex (and difficult to execute) ankle trip is described.

Because of the lack of organization and the overwhelming and irrelevant anecdotal presentation, I find I cannot recommend this book as an effective resource for new wrestling coaches.

4-0 out of 5 stars More philosophical than practical.
Dan Gable is the man, there can be no doubt. But I was a little disappointed with this book.I was expecting more of an instruction manual, but this is more about the philosophies of coaching. It's not a bad book and I don't regret getting it, but it wasn't what I was expecting. It is about coaching from a mostly theoretical standpoint.I think I was expecting a book more like the book "Winning Wrestling Moves" and this led to my slight disappointment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wrestling Review
This is a great book for any coach or wrestler,It is a must for anyone involved in the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dan Gable proves why he is the best
A good mix of stories, technique, and coaching philosopy. Not everyone will be able to get away with having the coaching style Dan Gable does but he shows how he has made it successful.I would recommend this book to anycoach interested in learning and touching the souls of thier athletes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important points of coaching are here.
Many wrestlers and coaches may base their reviews of a coaching book on the quantity or quality of moves found within. I do believe that the book does well in this area. However, its true success is in its discussion andadvice on communication, motivation, planning and developing a philosophy. It is what separates it from other "how to wrestle" books. It isa book for coaches. The basics are the most important part of wrestling, not any special tricks or throws. The edge over other teams is found in thelittle extras a coach can do to make sure his wrestlers are motivated tolearn and to win. This book is exactly what I was looking for. Ipurchased this book just after the 1998-99 season, my fourth as a head highschool coach. My credentials include winning Conference Titles in each ofthose years, coaching the first Team State qualifier from the conference in'98 and '99 and earning various state coaching awards. I am pleased I havedone some of the things Gable suggests, but I believe this book can makethings even better next season. Also, I haven't ever been any kind of DanGable die-hard, although now I understand why people are. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is different from other books on sports training andfitness for children. Its most important contribution is in theexplanation of "sensitive ages" for development of movement abilities(endurance, coordination, speed, strength, flexibility) and whatexercises you should use for developing these abilities at any givenage. The existence of sensitive ages is related to sex differencesand the need to develop separate programs of exercises for girls andboys from the onset of puberty. The exercises that fully develop thepotential of a 12-year-old girl will harm a 12-year-old boy. Exercisesthat are good for the boy are less challenging for the girl and thushold her back. The consequence of not doing just the right kind ofexercises at just the right age is reduced fitness and athleticpotential lost forever. In the case of girls it is easier to inflictlasting damage because their sensitive ages are shorter than boys'.Another unique feature in this work is a set of physical educationlessons and workout examples that show how to teach skills whilemaintaining a high level of activity and effort intensity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for anyone working with kids
This book was recommended to me by a peer before I started work with academy soccer players, and I have to say that it has proved to be very useful.I had previously worked solely with adults so some research was much needed.Don't be mislead by the colorful and childish cover as it has some great content - both scientific and practical.

It is rare to find a science-based book that reads so well cover to cover, but is equally useful as a reference.

There are opinions of certain topics such as strength training that could be argued, but then what good book doesn't challenge certain ideas or practices. It is of my belief that children's training is often an afterthought or merely based on adult models when in-factkids are our future, and so we need to invest more research and effort into programming for them.Getting this book should certainly help you in this process.

The ratings for this book below depend on the context of the reader:

Coach: 4/5
Athlete: N/A for child athletes
Sport Scientist/Student: 5/5

More reviews of books like this are on my blog, which is listed in my profile.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but not great.Reads more like a text book
A very good book that gives you an idea when the best stages to develop a young childs physical abilities.Coodination, endurance, speed, strength and flexibility for different ages and sexes. It is good to know what children are typically able to handle at certain ages.I know I've seen over eager parents try to have their children train like adults in hopes of making the next Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan only to burn the child out.

The problem I have with the book is it reads too much like a text book and not enough info to help actually coach.Lots of bars and graphs come in handy when it comes to showing the "sensitive" times to developing physical movements when it comes to age and sex. They can get a little over whelming when it comes to coaching. If you are doing a research paper on training young chldren then this would be an excellent book.On the other hand if you are a coach hoping to use the info right away you are pretty much going to get a bunch of guidelines. There are exercises and activities listed in the book but I honestly think if you are a good coach you could come up with something more fun for a young child. Then again you are probably better off having your child take swimming lessons, low level gymnastics or even just giving them time to just just play outside with their friends then actually setting up practice times.

Another thing I had a problem with is that the book is a little too cautious when it comes to training.I don't know what it is about PHD's but when they recommend exercise intensities. It is always low intensity, low volume repetitive training. So basically do not let your child lift weights, play football, competitive gymastics or anything that might injure them.We don't want them to injue their growth plates so just have them jog.

The strength training part is worthless in my opinion. It is kinda silly that the book does not recommended young athletes squat or deadlift for fear they might injure their back.I'm not saying 6 year old needs to lift but if you have a high school kid wait until their 20 to lift as recommended you pretty much set the child back in physical training.I'd high recommend the books, "Starting Strength" and "Practical Programming for Strength Training" by Rippetoe.Lots of "real" coaching info you can apply to a young athletes training.

This is a good book but it reads more like a text book for college then a book you can use to coach. If you are writing a paper this is a great book.If you are a coach I think the general guidelines will help out but not much else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do not hesitate to buy this book
Excellent book, very well written. It's progressively written in that it establishes the foundational theory and then elaborates greatly on the subject matter. I would also encourage Dr. Drabik to come to the US and do a seminar.

Dr. Drabik has put together a masterpiece on children's development. This excellent book has practical wisdom as wellas excellent drills that are easy to follow.I would encourage the authorto include photos in the next publication -- this would give the book aneven more effective educational appearance. I have found that the cover ofthe book was honest in terms of it's content -- very warm and caring.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs more careful editing.
This book has a lot that would be useful to a new HS coach, but unfortunately it seems that there was a lack of communication/checking between the author and the person who DTP'ed the diagrams. The diagrams contain many errors and inconsistencies which sometimes make it difficult to understand the plays and drills. Some arrows are missing or pointing in the opposite direction from what the descriptions indicate, offensive players are sometimes marked with an "X", diagrams occasionally show the ball going to one player while the description indicates a pass to a different player, etc.

Furthermore, the descriptions themselves could have been a little more detailed in places. It's clear that Coach Kuchar knows his basketball, but it's surprisingly difficult to explain basketball plays on paper, and I think this book would have benefited from a careful check by somebody who represents the target audience: a new coach with some understanding of the game but who doesn't already know what the author is trying to say.

My advice is to wait for the second edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve's Review
Great introductory reference for beginning or intermediate soccer coaches.Lots of good ideas for team and club building

3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful chapters, some not so much.
I bought this book when I first began coaching High School soccer. This book covers a variety of topics, most of which were not in any way applicable to my program.

I gave this book three stars because I firmly believe that a book which calls itself "The Soccer Coaching Bible" should be far more usable by far more people than just the high-end club coaches (who frankly, probably don't need the help). There were some very useful discussions on tactics and strategy, but for the most part this book has sat on the shelf.

Some very big name coaches contributed to this work, and there is a lot of information here, but most of it will be completely not useful to the majority of coaches who could really use a soccer 'bible'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intermediate to advance
This book is great but I have not had timeto finish reading. All the topics are well done.

We've move onto Football in that season as many people do but there are drills that translate into other sports. This includes Basketball and Baseball as the top-3.Again this is highly recommended and can help with strategy and scoring.Very appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
The Volleyball Coaching Bible is a great book.

It discusses, in clear language, all the areas a new coach should address.

From choosing a team, to conditioning, to strategy and scouting opponentants, this book covers them all.

This book is a must for every volleyball coaches library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Volleyball Strategies
Having not played volleyball since junior high, I was looking for a good book that would give me an understanding of all angles of the game. This book is a collection of essays on each facet by different well respected coaches. Each coach was chosen according to their strong suit to lay out their individual strategies and techniques on a particular piece of the game. I found the book to be full of tidbits that make watching and playing the game much more enjoyable. The Volleyball Coaching Bible

5-0 out of 5 stars volleyball coaching bible
A book of this caliber with its wealth of information and knowledge is not easily surpassed. Those coaches at the junior high level that are seeking to improve their records for the sake of promotion to the high school level would do well to have a copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just as the title suggest
It's the v-ball coaching bible, that's for sure.In building/maintaining a program it's a big help. There's some good suggestions in there for new and old coaches, I don't know any coaches in our system without this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is helpful
There are some chapters of this book that are great--they break down the skill into concise teachable parts and give drills that work on specific aspects of the drill. Then there are some chapters that don't help at all--give a vague breakdown of the skill but have no visual items or drills. Each chapter is done by a college/pro coach. This book does break down a lot of the off-court stuff--like pre-season paperwork to how to start a booster club.It also talks strategy (almost more than skills). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product. Numerous respectible Coaches offer input and strategies.
A great read for assistants or head coaches. Offers an awesome foundation for any coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Reference Book
This is a solid text covering various topics on football. This is a book that every football coach should pick up. I like the idea of being taught basic concepts by some of the best coaches at the college level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good starter
I'm probably like most who pick up this book in that I was looking into coaching for fun. My sons are going out for football and the team needs a coaching assistance. I thought maybe it was for me and I wanted to get more information. This is a good general reference but it it is important to point out each chapter is written by a different coach. This can be a good thing or bad thing depending on what you're looking for. For me I liked the different perspectives but the book as a whole wasn't as cohesive as it could have been. Good for begining coaches I think as well as coaches with some experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read for the Beginning or Experienced Coach
The Football Coaching Bible brings together a collection of articles and speeches by successful coaches from all levels. Whether you are looking for guidance on how to teach leadership, how to build (or re-build) a program from the ground up, or some talk on X's and O's, this book has it covered. Bill Snyder's chapter is particularly great, and has helped me to apply focus to my life in areas other than coaching. His story at K State is amazing.

This book does help a bit with basic nomenclature for brand new coaches. However it mostly assumes a basic understanding of certain things. The beginning coach may have to do some digging to find out exactly what some of the terms mean.

3-0 out of 5 stars fb coaching bible
Some good info in this book, however each chapter is written from one coach's perspective (passing game, rush "D", etc....) I would have liked more info on each area of the game rather than a detailed perspective of one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps worst book on stretching...
The illustrations are rudimentary, with an almost complete abscence of written instruction for very risky, complicated, stretches. Some of them are the usual tired yoga stretches that get promoted now-a-days. While others make the knee joint the weight-bearing point. Beware, some of these stretches WILL damage your body beyond repair. Advice in the book is often hearsay, like "all wrestlers do the yoga shoulder stand" (?)
I once knew a ballerina in a professional company who told me that the ballerinas have a short career, arthritis from extreme stretching helps ensure that, she said. Use this book to damage bodies only.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flexibility prevents injuries
I like the way the author set up the book with a clear introduction of the anatomy and mechanics of stretching. In addition, the use of charts for "sport specific" stretching guidelines is extremely useful. Illustration are clear and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
I am a certified personal trainer, athlete, medical massage practitioner and I teach anatomy/physiology, so I review this book with some authority.

The opening chapters explain quite nicely the scientific rationale for, and benefits of, stretching for those who prefer to have a technical basis for what they do. You'll find great variety here and many unique stretches I've not seen in similar books.

To address some of the negative reviews:
Nowhere does the author recommend performing dangerous stretches or techniques beyond the abilities of the reader. Some advanced stretches are presented for informational purposes but with the caveat that these are for VERY specific applications and should be attempted ONLY if you do not have contraindicated conditions. To quote the book: "There is generally no such thing as an unsafe stretch or exercise: only an unsafe way of executing any movement for a specific individual at a specific time". In other words, everyone is different and the reader should use good judgment in their choices. Some people will take very "safe" stretches and get injured by using sloppy form or not training within their abilities while others can perform "dangerous" stretches very safely by proceeding slowly, deliberately and realistically training within their own physical limitations.

Some reviewers purport that 2 or 3 stretches are all that you need and the author is fooling you with many "goofy" stretches. Ridiculous! Can a carpenter build a house with only a hammer and level? NO! If two good stretches were all you needed for each muscle, then the book would simply be entitled, "Two Stretches That Work For Every Person and Sport". Personally, I like that the author has provided a huge amount of variety. That way, I can try any number of the 311 stretches taught and find the 3 or 4 that work best for me for each muscle group. As my needs change, then I can go back to the book and try something different. I would rather have too much information than not enough. If some readers are annoyed by the variety there are plenty of very basic, boring stretch books out there to fill their needs. Also, if you read and understand the opening chapters, you'll know how to adapt any of the stretchesto active, dynamic, PNF or vice versa. The book will not limit your advancement as some reviewers mistakenly believe.

I highly recommend this book. It's clear, concise and presents many options, from basic to advanced, for you to build a good stretching program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jam Packed with Stretches for Every Muscle Group
I'm a former couch potato who started doing Tae Bo and cardio kickboxing almost two years ago.I recently added yoga to my routine for flexibility, and pilates for strength and control, but found that I needed more.In particular, I wanted greater flexibility in my adductor muscles so that I could kick higher and with increased control.I found that I was also having some knee problems. So I checked out every book that my local library had on stretching and flexibility; out of the dozen or so books I looked at, I liked three of them, including "Sport Stretch," well enough that I purchased my own copies.

"Sport Stretch" begins with a discussion of flexibility, then launches into descriptions of 311 different stretches. Most of these consist of a single illustration with a few bulleted instructions. The stretches themselves are arranged into chapters based on muscle groups, including feet and ankles, lower legs, hamstrings, adductors, quadriceps, hips and gluteals, lower torso, upper back, neck, pectorals, shoulders, and arms and wrists.

Additionally, the author includes an index at the beginning of the book that singles out stretches that are helpful for specific sports.One- to three-page sections are dedicated to each of the following: archery; baseball, softball, and cricket; basketball; bowling; cross-country skiing; cycling and triathlon; dance; diving; figure skating; football; golf; gymnastics; hiking and backpacking; ice hockey; in-line skating; jogging; lacrosse; martial arts; race walking; rowing, kayacking, and canoeing; sailing and windsurfing; skiing; soccer; squash; swimming; table tennis; tennis, racquetball, and handball; track and field; volleyball; water skiing; weight lifting; and wrestling.

As a BEGINNER, I found most of the stretches helpful. There were some standard moves that I was already familiar with from my high school gym classes, as well as some more challenging exercises I learned in yoga. However, a number of the stretches were completely new to me.I'm especially happy with the adductor section, as it's exactly what I needed to help with my roundhouse kicks!Note the emphasis on "beginner," though - because I'm such a novice, I really can't say whether more advanced athletes will find "Sports Stretch" useful or not.

As much as I like the book, I do have a few complaints. Most of the stretches, with few exceptions, only have a single illustration.Given the minimalist instructions, many of the moves could have used at least one extra picture. Also, once I eased into certain stretches, I found it difficult to gracefully get OUT of them.It seems to me as though the author should have included "exit strategies" for some of a stretches, particularly the more advanced ones! Finally, a few stretches come with the following caveat:"This exercise may be too advanced or dangerous for even some elite athletes."Now, I would think that "elite" or even "professional" athletes have trainers, and wouldn't need to rely on a book for stretching advice - so I really don't see why the author included these seemingly dangerous stretches.Unless he's asking for a lawsuit! ;)

Otherwise, a great buy, at least for beginner-to-moderate athletes.

1-0 out of 5 stars not to comprehensive
Although this book may have some good overall general stretches in it it does not cover all the methods of stretching, or any routines for the athlete to build apon.Although passive stretching is good for your flexability maintanence if you dont incorperate isometric and combining it (PNF), you will never achieve the greatest rang of flexability as a top athlete.I have been studying the martial arts for 19 years now and I am always looking for good material for stretching to recomend to my students of friends.I can say I would never recomend this book to another living soul involved in any demanding sport. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Older (12U+)Players
I was looking for a book to help me with my daughter who is playing in 8U this year. This is not the book for that. While it is an excellent reference, the book focuses on tools and drills that only the older girls can do. I would recommend it for the older girls but not for 8U or even 10U.

Well written with lots of details and good pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for the first time coach.
Alot of basic information. If you've already read one or two coaching softball books this one is not much different.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Coaching Resource
Kathy Veroni and Roanna Brazier have written a real winner with their excellent softball reference, "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully -- Second Edition".It is the first book to which I turn when I have a question about managing my team.As a softball board member, if there is an issue on which I feel lost, I can inevitably find good guidance from Veroni/Brazier.In the latter case, Chapter 4, Building a Softball Program, has been particularly valuable time and again.

While written for the travel, high school, or college manager, there is plenty here for lower level recreational league coaches as well. There are whole chapters that can benefit any coach, including developing a coaching philosophy, communicating, motivating, coaching plans, and evaluating the players, team, and the job one has done overall as coach for the season.Additionally, there are exceptional sections on coaching offense, defense and managing a game tactically that are unique to this book.

I love the hitting drills finder in Chapter 8.Instead of focusing on a particular skill to develop, as other drill finders do, "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully" directs its attention on batting problems or flaws to correct. What an absolutely brilliant approach...and of course, extremely valuable to a coach who wants to be more effective!Throw in the standard chapters on defensive and pitching drills and fundamentals, and "Coaching Fastpitch Softball Successfully" becomes a complete reference guide for having a successful season and program.

I know that this book has given my teams at the recreational league level a real edge, both on the playing field and off.Whether one is a new coach at the recreational level, or a seasoned veteran at the travel or high school level, this book is a must-have on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
The book was in perfect condition and the shipping was right on time! Great transaction!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from the legendary Lanny Bassham
Jackie has made a significant observation concerning the need to be able to see many days of records at a glance. Her charts would be most helpful to any athlete to notice trends in training. Scores can be deceiving and I like the detail of her program. She has defined in a simple to use fashion a way to quickly see what the performer is really doing beyond just looking at score. I especially like the use of symbols to record levels of performance; stars, plus signs. Great idea. I feel Jackie has made an important advance to competitors by writing this book. Good job. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Better for older middle-school
I am a mom/coach - I have played and watched basketball on and off for most of my adult life but am no expert. I signed on to coach my 10 year old daughter's town recreation team this year - mostly 5th graders, with a few younger and a few older, and bought thisbook to figure out how to start.

This book has a lot of good information and tips, but I feel it is lacking in several areas.

1. It is not a true beginner's book. It needs more basics and rules of game play, such as setting up for free throws (when can you go for the rebound and when do you have to wait), taking the ball out, etc - the things that make the game run right.Who brings the ball down? (and, strategically, what is a trap? How to get out of it?) Simple essential stuff that is missing.

2. I don't think 5th graders who are pretty new to basketball can understand picks and screens - many of the drills are too complicated. They need to see the floor, spread out, learn to cut. The rest can come later.

3. 10 year old girls cannot shoot the ball from over their head. They must shoot from the chest - they aren't tall and strong enough to do otherwise. So insisting they be taught to shoot the adult way is useless.

4. I'd like to see more in a book like this about supporting your teammates, girl relationships, empowerment - the social aspect of the team is very important to girls and more can be said about it.

5. I'd also like to see a discussion on how coaches might behave from the sidelines- is it beneficial to shout directions at the girls as they play? to stop and start scrimmages to show them what to do? Or just let them go, play, enjoy, and talk after? As a beginniner I feel quite uncertain about all this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone who is thinking about coaching.
I bought this for my wife who has no formal training in coaching or teaching. It is the first book she's read in years. She still carries it around in her car.She made all kinds of plans - coached in two tournaments and even won one of them. Now she's all about coaching.I think she's found a new love. She never would have done this without the book.If you are thinking about coaching, but just don't know what to do, get this book. You might find that it is all you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Girl's Basketball Book
I'm a new coach and found this book an easy read, but packed with good tips and drills. Works on basics, and doesn't come across as a boy's book titled differently for girls. I would suggest you read this book a couple of times before the season begins. The book points out the importance of planning your practices, it is right!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginner Coaches -- Buy this one!!!
This book is great for girl coaches from new to experienced. It is for the coach who wants to learn how to coach basketball the right way. I am a coach and have three daughters and I would hope that any coach that teaches any of my children would have at least a working knowledge of the information in this book. It is an easy read and a good reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the new coach
The author expertly guides the reader through the entire coaching process. Not only the sport and the basics, but also the the most important parts of coaching youths: planning, preperation and Parents!I am also impressed with the in-depth examination of the differences of coaching girls and boys.I definately recommend this book for new coaches of girls. ...
