1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
This book will tell you absolutely nothing you can't learn for free by reading the eBay tutorials and looking at couple of sports card message boards (beckett, sportscardsheriff, etc).

The information presented is of the most basic nature and is repeated many times, often on the same page. It became quite obvious after reading the first two chapters that the author was struggling to "pad" the page count of this book.

I am not an expert in sports collecting by any means, in fact I just started this year. However, if you just follow the advice in my first paragraph, you will have acquired the knowledge in this book many times over.

If you're still not convinced, go to your local bookstore and flip through this book, you'll see what I mean fairly quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have book for eBay buyers and sellers!
This is a must-have book for eBay buyers AND sellers! It provides comprehensive material written in plain English so that both the novice and expert buyer/seller on the eBay auction site can learn something new that will be worth WAY MORE than the cost of the book.

Don't you think it's worth investing $10-$20 for a possible payoff of more than $1000 or more in the long run?

This book should be in your hands today!

Buy it, you won't regret it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the few books to cover more horse racing than glasses
I can't speak for the other sports covered by this book, but this is the only book I have ever found to cover more horse racing memorabilia than just Kentucky Derby and other glasses. This book covers glasses but also programs and pins for all three Triple Crown races and horse racing games. The prices listed still useful even though 10 year old now since horse racing memorabilia isn't a very volatile market, at least in the older items.Just add about 10% or so to the prices and you are pretty much up to date again. The listing of games is one of the best parts of the book as I have never found such a comprehensive list anywhere else.

If you are a collector, pick up a copy for reference use. They are dirt cheap now as used books here on Amazon but you will find it quite valuable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read and covers many items.
I enjoyed the book for its content. It had many sports collectibles that you may not think of. The major problem of the book is the published date of 1993.In the world of collectibles 5 years is an eternity. As the title of the book reads "Malloy's Sports Collectibles Value Guide : Up-To-Date Prices for Noncard Sports Memorabilia" The "up to date" portion is not even close. Probably one of the best books that cover this kind of memorabilia but does you no good if the information is out of date. ... Read more

Product Description
That old 1962-vintage Willie Mays baseball trading card may be the ticket to a college education, and a mint-condition ticket stub from the first Super Bowl may pay for 50-yard-line seats for many a Super Bowl to come. You may never know unless you grab yourself a copy of Sports Memorabilia For Dummies and get wise to the ins and outs of collecting sports memorabilia.Decide what to collect, and what not to collect -- from baseball cards and ticket stubs to well-worn football jerseys and stadium scoreboards -- as you master the savvy bargaining and pricing techniques to get the best deals on the sports memorabilia you want. Avoid fakes, forgeries, and far-fetched offers as you build your collection, and educate yourself as you increase your enjoyment of collecting and the thrill of the sport itself. And here's a little extra incentive: According to a 1988 study in Money magazine, from 1980 to 1987, the blue-chip value of baseball cards outperformed stocks, bonds, and Treasury bills. So what'll it be? More Microsoft stock or that 1952 Mickey Mantle card? You make the call.Amazon.com Review
Betting your investment portfolio on a stockpile of rookiecards? Not so fast, says Pete Williams, author of SportsMemorabilia for Dummies. Even though baseball cards as aninvestment vehicle outperformed stocks, bonds, and treasury bills from1980 to 1987, remember the familiar disclaimer that past performanceis not indicative of future returns. While the collecting mania isstill in full bloom, Williams wants everyone to know that the powercurve of collectibles as an investment is past its peak. Withinvestment dollars finding other homes, it's a wonderful time to startcollecting. Prices are down and there is more merchandise for the restof us.

This latest addition to the ubiquitous Dummies seriesdetails the finer points of memorabilia collecting by an insider. PeteWilliams, writer and columnist for USA Today's Baseball Weekly, parlays his work as a beat reporter covering the sports-collectingbusiness into a primer that separates the investment-fueled hype fromthe enjoyment that fans can derive from collectibles.

This volume, like the other For Dummies books, uses an extremely readable andlighthearted approach to an otherwise overwhelming topic. Williamsguides us step by step through getting started and sifting out what tocollect, to the pitfalls and scams of unscrupulous dealers, andincludes an exhaustive appendix of resources. This volume is a mustfor anyone wanting to stay abreast of the "collecting"industry. --Tim Shannon ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but good
Lots of info here but gosh how could you put all the info in one book. Good add to u r collection but not a true in depth guide

3-0 out of 5 stars More like coffee table than reference

This books value is in a simplistic version of the Editorial review description: "This book helps fill a . . .gap in understanding a great era of golf, 1919 to 1942..." providing a chance to visually see some of the unique clubs designed during this era. It's nicely done and beautifully photographed, but, that's where it stops.

The book also identifies unique designs, which is where one will gather the best value, though the pictorial representations are not supported by any text other than the simplistic descriptions and approximate values.

Sadly, it lacks any degree of information. It appears to be more of a catalog of someone's collection than a reference work. Although there is a great deal of individually identified (cataloged) clubs, there are far too many instances where it reads more like an auction bulletin, with descriptions such as "Drivers, pyratone shafts 1923 - 1942 approximate value $55.00 each" to describe a page full of images that are all too small to allow the reader to identify any of the single clubs represented on the page. This is also a problem in other areas of the book such as the grips section.

Other than the main chapter headings ("Metal Woods"; "Custom Clubs"; "Wood Heads, Steel, Pyratone, or Wood Shafted Clubs"; "Irons and Full Sets"; "Composite Materials"; "Fancy Face Woods"; "Fancy Face Putters & Irons"; "Utility Irons"; "Practice Clubs"; "Putters"; "Adjustable Clubs") the individual club listings do not appear to follow any order. The listings within each chapter do not follow any date order, and the dates are mixed from within the "era" of the titled subject matter: from the 1920s through the 1940s. On one page the reader can find clubs represented from 1920 and 1930, where the next starts with 1940 ending with1920. It appears that the order was controlled by the graphic designer with no thought given to the usage of the book as a reference source.

Unfortunately, if you were looking to this book as a reference to learn more about any individual clubs you'd have to look through every page listed in the index under the manufacturer's name as the main chapter headings are the sole order. As example:a particular Spaulding wood might be in listed the "Wood Heads, Steel, Pyratone, or Wood Shafted Clubs" chapter because of the type of shaft utilized in its manufacture, whereas a different Spaulding wood could be listed in any one of the "Metal Woods", "Fancy Face Woods", or "Composite Materials" chapters.

In closing if one is expecting this book to compare to The Golfworks series of "The Golf Club Identification and Price Guide" they will be disappointed. If they are looking for a coffee table pictorial of a good deal of the clubs that were manufactured before ones cataloged in The Golfworks price guides.

Product Description

In order to provide these answers and facilitate the reader's understanding of antique fishing lures, the authors of this book have intentionally avoided lengthy pages of text. Instead, they have used excellent color photographs and a lifetime of knowledge and experience with fishing lures to create the most complete and convenient single volume available today: Fishing Lure Collectibles, An Encyclopedia of the Early Years, 1840 to 1940. This benchmark concept has proven its acceptance among its readers by becoming Collector Books' bestselling book on collectible fishing lures. That the tackle collecting hobby is difficult to learn is undeniable, and it is for this reason that these foremost experts prepared this helpful publication. 5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST OF MANY
First, I must confess that I do not use they type of lures that are featured in this wonderful book.I gave up this type of fishing years and years ago and only trout fish using flies now.Never-the-less, fishing gear, any fishing gear, absolutely fascinates me and I love looking at the stuff. But that is not the primary reason I own this and quite a number of other books of its ilk.

I have for years bought and sold these things; in part to make money, but more so because it is a nice hobby and I get to meet many nice people. When you buy and sell such things, I have found it is best to know a bit about them. This work goes along way in assisting me in this need for knowledge. There is a lot of money to be made in this hobby, but conversely, there is a lot of money to be lost if you know not what you are doing.

Secondly, I paint and draw. One of my primary subjects for still-life paintings and drawings is fishing lures. Now always having the actually lure in front of me is a bit of a handicap, and to be frank quite impossible because some of these fishing lures are quite rare and I have absolutely no access to them, but lacking the best thing, i.e. the actual lure, the photographs in this work are by far the second best thing to use.The color is extremely accurate as is the quality of the photographs; sharp, clear and detailed.I have found that the measurements provided by the authors to be extremely accurate. Using this work, I am able to reproduce very nice reproductions on canvas, paper or what ever material I choose...I have even used gourds from time to time. The clear and concise text accompanying each photograph provides invaluable information, both technical and background wise.

I like my paintings to be as accurate and authentic as possible and this work gives me the edge I need.

Now the only warning I might give to those who contemplate purchasing this work is that the prices or worth assigned to each lure can be misleading. As with any other collectable or antique, any given piece is only worth what someone is willing to give for it or willing to part with it for.Yes, the prices given here do give you a ballpark figure and a starting point, but just because the book states the lure is worth a thousand dollars and you find one in your grandfather's lure box, does not mean that you will be able to run out the door and sell it for that much.Likewise, if you plan to buy a particular piece, I certainly would not start the bargaining process at the prices given here. But all that is common sense and really does not distract from this work what so ever. NO BOOK gives you prices that are written in stone!Trust me, I know about such matters. Another warning her for the would be collector: Due to the price of some of these objects, there is a very large knock-off and counterfeit market out there right now...do be careful and do your homework. Some of these people are quite good at what they do!

The book is well arranged by manufacturer, maker or company and it is rather easy to find what you are looking for.Do keep in mind that no one book can possibly cover all of the thousands upon thousands of lures that have been manufactured or hand made over the years, but hey...you have to start somewhere.I also like the way the authors have included the history of these item which is an education within itself.

On the less practical side, this is just a fun book for those interested in such things to simply brows through. Many wintery evening can be spent going over this work using it as either a "wish list" or just for the pure joy of seeing and learning. You know, if you look at it from a certain angle, the reader can learn much concerning the minds of men and the minds of the fish he or she pursues just by looking at what has been created to try to lure these tricky critters onto the stringer.

If this is an area of interest for you, then this is one of those must have books to add to your collection and I do highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book too
Another lure book, if you like fishing (or even better if you are an addict like me) you will find this book interesting. It will send you to sleep if you don't like fishing or the history associated with the ways and means of catching fish.Like other companion books, these are beautifully presented with nice photo's and informative text.Sorry I haven't done a book review since high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be missed.
Any collector interested in antique fishing lures and the history of fishing lure production will find all the answers in Fishing Lure Collectibles, a clear guide to a notoriously difficult collecting hobby focus. Two experts provide clear details in Fishing Lure Collectibles: An Encyclopedia of the Early Years, 1840 to 1940. Each manufacturer's items are surveyed along with history, individuals who purchased patent rights from companies, changes in bait quality and production standards, and more. Not to be missed.

3-0 out of 5 stars info
I was very pleased with the condition of the book since it was used. The content of the book was informative, but some of the pictures were not identified.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great resource, except for the price guide
I agree with those who say that this book is a great reference.
This has a lot of information that is generaly hard to find, especially since general information is hard to find as it is.Most guides like this are for a specificly for one type or area of scouting collectables (OA Flaps etc.).This one does a great job of trying to gather as much as possible in one volume.Lots of photos (too bad that only a few are in color) and drawings, could use more, but then you would run out of room.

The main problem I have, is with the actual price guide. It is far from realistic. As a new collector, I brought this guide to local "Trade-O-Rees", (aka "TOR")to see how accurate it was.I was very surprised, to see that it was not even close for most of the items I checked (I was at the many TORs I visited for at least 2-3 days each).
When I asked the collectors there why this was, they replied that ebay and other internet auction sites had made collecting much easier and cheaper.

But the comment I heard over and over again was that the author had deliberatly listed the items he had at high prices and the items he needed at very low prices.True or false I don't know.

But Over all, NONE of the collectors that I met used this book for its price guide, they used it as a general reference guide. That was the advice I received by more than a dozen collectors.

To follow up, Great reference guide (but needs more color photos), poor price guide.
