Fabulous reference book of unusual sports memorabilia
Enthusiastic sports memorabila collectors will absolutely love this book.It is a perfect reference before buying or selling any items on auction sites such as Amazon.com and eBay as well as consginment sites like Zshops and Starshows.com. The book provides many great pictures of all sorts ofmemorabilia.It covers a complete list of sports from boxing to wrestling. It includes extensive listings of autographs, equipment, figurines, teampublications, ticket stubs, bottle caps, programs, magents, and evenmatchbooks.I found out that a 1951 Phillies yearbook I have is worth$400. Handy for checklists in one volume, but lacks research.
This book is excellent if you want a checklist reference in one volume.However, there is no evidence that any research went into the creating of this book. There are almost no gamer details about each set, and criticaldata on variations, alpha editions, etc. is sorely lacking. For example,there is no mention of the many significant variations in the Primaryedition of Galactic Empires; and the alpha "Legend of Five Rings"is not even mentioned (These had red lines in the black borders).

also,the publisher says this book is "lavishly illustrated"... what ajoke! There are only a few small black and white illustrations included. Essentially, this book just represents a collected resource of previouslypublished checklists from various gamer magazines. Incomplete Guide!
Author spread his interests too far with Baseball & other sports . Then couldnt come up with enough material to complete each catagory in this book..
Mainly all easy information that can be picked up from any boxing memorabilia dealers website

I found this book o be of very limited resource.
The book is called "COMPLETE" guide, but I found it to be "Incomplete"
Book published in 1995, but alot of catagories are only listed upto 1992.
All catagories : ie Program, tickets, posters etc only contain a selection of items.
Eg. 1985 "2 tickets listed" thats all!

Many missinformed or incorrect information,
Eg programs that dont exist, unless was talking about Botsheets, but was unclear!

complete guide to sporting collectibles
First of all the word complete does not belong on the cover of this book.I think that this book is a perfect example of someone trying to doeverything but ends up not doing anything well. There are books dedicatedto subjects such as guns, knives and decoys, which could have been left outof this book. I think chapter 14 is a good example this chapter tries tocover cartridges, shotshells,and powder cans and kegs. There nodescriptions, or pictures and it barely touches on each subject. If i hadto describe this book in one word it would be disappointing, I would notrecommend this book to anyone.

Anathlete's book
"Sports Immortals" is a fantastic nonfiction novel writen by Jim Platt.Sports Immortals has the best collection of sports items ever.If you look in the book and see all the valuable items, they are all owned by one person, his name is Joel Platt. He started collecting them when he was in the hospital and Babe Ruth came to visit him. Some items were Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves,Oscar Robinson's basketball jersey, and Bade Bruth's baseball jersey. There are many different characters who were the best athletes in the world.

Sports Immortals is a collection of stories about some of the greatest sports times and athletes of all time and discribe the lives and challenging times they had to go through. For example, when Michael Jordan won his forth NBA title he cried because his father had been killed that summer. I also liked when it talked about the 1980 U.S. hockey team and how their whole team was made up of collage players, and then they won the gold metal in Lake Placid, NY. This is a great book because it shows all the things that athletes have to go through to achieve their goals and accomplishments.

I would recommend this book to people who want to learn about sports history. I loved this book because it showed how hard it is to be an athlete and what difficuties they have to conquer. This book was a fantastic book that I loved and I think you would too.

The perfect coffee table book
Truly an exceptional gathering of sports legends and their respective histories, Sports Immortals takes us on a tour that even sports-phobic individuals will love.From baseball and football, to skating and NASCAR, the pages capture the essence of the cultural phenomenon that we take for granted today.
Unexpectedly, most interesting are the pages which highlight not the obvious modern-day heroes, but rather the legends of yester-year, such as Jack Johnson (1910 African-American prize fighter) or Don Budge (1930's tennis champion).
Although some of the accompanying pictures are seemingly boring at first glance, they take on new life when you realize that these are actual items in Joel and Jim Platt's museum collection.

And that, of course, is the point of the book--to make us realize that these individuals are real and not simply the intangible "stuff of legend."In particular, the photos and supplemental annotations at the end of the book illustrate not only the diversity and amazing progress of the sports world (check out the 1864 ice skates!), but also the incessant controversies that accompany it (must-see letter of Jack Johnson's confession of throwing the big fight).

I now display the book proudly on my coffee table for all to view. What more can I say....the only thing better is to go to Boca Raton, FL to see it for real.

Great for the sports lover
I received a copy of this book from my friend.This book is full of great stories and photographs of the greatest athletes of all time.The book goes beyond the typical information you have seen in the past and opens the door to interesting stories about the author's father, who has collected an amazing amount of incredible memorabilia.The photographs of the items in Joel Platt's collection amazed me.His story and moments with these athletes is also very inspirational.

I recommend this book and hope to one day see Joel realize his dreams of opening his Sports Immortals museum so that I can enjoy the full extent of his collection. ... Read more

Lots of good info on what to look for.Highly repetitive though.For example there are examples for quite a few 1970s
counterfeits which all have the same thing to look for.It is layed out each card individually with basically the same wording as previous cards.Other than that it is really great
for seldom seen cards.alot of these cards I never even knew they were counterfeited.On some of them you scratch your head and say "why".Worth the buy especially with bozos on ebay selling fakes. ... Read more

Lots of Fun

Love This Book!
I purchased this book as a beginning collector of sports autographs.In no time, I received signed photos from Dale Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr., Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon, Joe Montana, Wayne Gretzky and Muhammad Ali.I'm still sending out a lot of requests and look forward to going to the mailbox every day!I'm really happy with the results of this book and would much rather have this guide to refer to as opposed to spending hours upon hours trying to piece this much information together myself.I think the author did a fantastic job and should be recognized for her hard work.Looking forward to future projects from this talented young lady!

A Useless Guide
I bought the Sports Address book for my 14 year old son for the Holidays, and we were both greatly disppointed! I could have authored this book! 99% of the addresses are in care of teams, or in care of organizations! Anyone can find the address of a team! It must have taken this author less than 2 days to write this book! The title is deceiving! It should be titled, Sports Autographs-Care of Teams! We are trying to find a way to return this book!It was a waste of over thirty dollars. It was an insult to the true autograph collector! The author, if she had any decency, should buy this book back from us, and give it to a member of her family, as a Holiday present!

Not worth the cost
All of the addresses are C/O a team or Association. You could spend 10 minutes online and get all of the addresses in this book. Very dissapointed!
