5-0 out of 5 stars SENSATIONAL SPECKY ! ! ! !
I thought Specky Magee and the great footy contest was a great book, it was a good read because once i read the first page i couldnt get enough of it and i read it till the end. It is a great book about Australian rules football but you dont need to be an aussie to understand it because the Australian rules football isnt the only part of the book, it had a lot of different plots. I liked this book because it wasnt all about football it had the relationships Secky had with his Family, Friends and enemys. Overall it was a great book, i reccomend it for kids between the age of 7 and 13. I give this sensational book a rating of 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Specky rules!
This is a good book for kids who like sports novels. If you don't know anything about Australian football it's a little confusing at first but you get it pretty quick. The other plots besides the footy are about his friends and his parents, and they are really interesting. And not common in kids' books, so that's cool.

There are three books in this series and they are co wrote by an ex footy star and his childhood friend who is a writer. They do funny introductions in the beginning of the books so don't forget to read the paragraphs where they make fun of each other a bit. ... Read more

Product Description
A century ago, when Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona outlawed steer roping contests, there was one place a southwestern roper could go to hone his skills: Cowboy Park, the arena established in 1907 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas.
During the formative years of rodeo that preceded the first Calgary Stampede in 1912, Cowboy Park promoted the sport of steer roping and provided a ready training ground for up-and-coming champions. From its inception until growing political turmoil in Mexico brought the enterprise to a halt, Cowboy Park kept the sport alive and fostered celebrity--its ''alumni'' swept the first prizes in Calgary and continued to dominate for some years. This unique institution, despite its significant influence on the future of rodeo, has until now received scant attention.
Through the history he has recovered and photographs--many published here for the first time--John Baxter documents and illuminates the era of Cowboy Park and the early champions who won their spurs there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Steer ropers evading Texas law
A century ago,Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona outlawed steer roping contests because too many cattle and horses (and perhaps cowboys) were injured during practice sessions on the range.

The "Stone and Webster Public Service Journal" for 1907 announced:

"A new amusement enterprise has been started in Juarez, known as Cowboy Park, in which roping contests, bronco busting, etc., take place every two weeks. Roping contests have been prohibited in the state of Texas for the last two years, so that it is necessary to hold such events in Mexico. This helps the earnings of this company, however, as the park is very well patronized by Americans from El Paso."

John Baxter has spent countless hours reading and extracting newspaper accounts from almost 50 periodicals of the period, and has written a fascinating description of the events that took place at Cowboy Park. Many of the pictures are a bit unclear, but taken together they give a wonderful immediacy to the contests.

The first Calgary Stampede took place in 1912; in the preceding five years cowboys honed their roping and other cowboy skills at Cowboy Park. Baxter introduces the reader to stars likeGuy Weadick, Zack and Lucille Mulhall, Bill Pickett, Will Rogers, Calgary, Pendleton, Dan Patch, Ben Johnson, Fog Horn Clancy, and Guy Allen. He mentions dozens of others less famous ropers but still important in the early days of rodeo. Alumni of Cowboy Park dominated the sport for many years after it closed.

Political instability in Mexico force the closing of Cowboy Park in 1912. The first Comment contains a link to a photograph in the Library of Congress entitled "Juarez, Insurrectos attack federals in cowboy park."

John O. Baxter is the author of Dividing New Mexico's Waters, 1700-1912 and Las Carneradas: Sheep Trade in New Mexico, 1700-1860.

As a tenderfoot from New Jersey, I found this book an fascinating introduction to something I knew nothing at all about.

Helpful info and tips, especially for the first timer on the contest circuit. Some of the contest info is dated however and things change too often as far as venues, dates, and formats are concerned. That part of the book has limited usefulness.

This is a reference book for contests.I wish I had purchased it earlier and used the information to enter DRF/NTRA contests. If you are interested in participating in contests this is a must. Product Description
While surfers may look more relaxed than most, and may even be more relaxed, they are not exempt from the human desire to go higher, farther and faster. As the members of the developing surfing world of the early 1960s found themselves striving to surpass one another, and looking to quantify their most accomplished riders, the first surf contests were organized. These loosely arranged affairs had, as Shirley Richards (Ron's former wife) recently remembered, silk-screened T-shirts as their prizes. Pretty innocent stuff. At 27, as Ron Church strode forcefully into this arena, he had already accomplished a great deal, first as a jet test photographer, then as an up-and-coming (and ultimately much-awarded) underwater photographer. In his ongoing quest for new material, he brought to surfing a headful of new ideas, camera angles and lighting techniques, at the very moment these earliest contests arose, at the moment that surfing, which had been considered a somewhat off-center activity, began to organize itself and enter the mainstream. Although Church only actively photographed surfing and its surrounding lifestyle for a few short years, he was there at the beginning of its transformation into something big, and, as viewers will see, his documentation of its first contests--which were at once mundane and heroic--brought surf photography to another level. All but a few of these images are previously unpublished. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wave riders, moon pulls
I am not an expert in the history of the surfing, nor of vintage photography, but it is difficult not to be mesmerized by the images in this book. It hearkens a now, seemingly impossible, bygone era of classic beach, effortless glamour, which --should it appear today amidst not always tasteful supposed Hawaiian printed nylon board shorts, would be lauded by the most respected sartorialists, and young mavens who scrounge vintage shops and special boutiques for dearly priced retro-style, 50's and 60's inspired swimsuits. Ron Church captures excellent characters here: there are the celebrated contestants of course, their Ann-Margret girls and the throngs of awkward, admiring, adolescents. Most of all, the images in this book stirred in me a kind of nostalgia, a longing for a time before today's unending calamities and cataclysms. Surely our planet suffered its disasters then, but it's easy with a book such as this to imagine the moon incapable of violence, providing sunkissed youths with always reliable steady shores. ... Nathan's International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual competitive eating competition held at Nathan's Famous Corporation's original and best-known restaurant at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. The event is held on July 4, and is regarded as the world's most famous hot dog eating contest and a colorful tradition of Independence Day in the United States. In 2006, over 30,000 spectators attended the event, and an additional 1.5 million households watched it live on ESPN. The ninety-fourth annual contest was held on July 4, 2009. Six-time champion Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi and two-time defending champion Joey Chestnut were the favorites going into the contest; Chestnut prevailed by setting a new record of 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Kobayashi was second with 64½. The contest was televised live on ESPN, which has held the broadcast rights for this event since 2004. According to legend, on July 4, 1916 four immigrants had a hot dog eating contest at Nathan's Famous stand on Coney Island to settle an argument about who was the most patriotic. The contest has been held nearly every year since, in conjunction with Independence Day at the site. In 1993, a one-time, one-on-one contest under the Brooklyn Bridge was held between Mike DeVito and Orio Ito. There is a weigh-in with the Mayor of New York City prior to the contest. On the day of the contest, the contestants arrive in the "bus of champions". In recent years, guitarist and songwriter Amos Wengler has performed one of the songs he had written for the contest. A person in a hot dog costume dances as Wengler plays. Some of Wengler's composit...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=766904 ... Read more

From the author: When several contests' compete for the participation of a common set of players, a contest's allocation of prizes not only induces incentive effects but also participation effects'. Our model predicts that an increase in the sensitivity with which contest outcomes depend on players' efforts makes flatter prize structures more attractive to participants. In equilibrium, contests" that aim to maximize the number of participants will award multiple prizes if and only if this sensitivity is sufficiently high. Moreover, the prize awarded to the winner is decreasing in the contests' sensitivity. We provide empirical evidence from professional road running using race distance as a measure of sensitivity. We show that steeper prize structures are more attractive to top-ranked runners in longer, that is, less sensitive, races. In line with our theory, longer races do in fact offer steeper prize structures.

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A slam dunk is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both hands over the rim. This is considered a normal field goal attempt; if successful it is worth two points. The term "slam dunk" was coined by Los Angeles Lakers announcer Chick Hearn. Prior to that, it was known as a dunk shot. The slam dunk is one of the highest percentage shots one can attempt in basketball as well as one of the most crowd-pleasing plays. Other terms for slam dunk include "jam," "yam,", "flambledamble", "slamalamadingdong", "boom," "bang," "punch," "stuff," "flush," "cram," "spike," "yoke," "thrust," "wizzle-wozzle," "poke," or "throw down." Excerpt: The World Gliding Championships is a gliding competition held every two years or so by the FAI Gliding Commission. The dates are not always exactly two years apart, often because the contests are sometimes held in the summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Gliding had been a demonstration sport at the 1936 Summer Olympics and was due to become an official Olympic sport in the Helsinki Games in 1940. However since the Second World War, gliding has not featured in the Olympics, and so the World Championships are the highest level in the sport. There are now contests for six classes of glider and so in recent years the Championships have been divided between two locations. The women's, junior, grand prix and aerobatic events are also held separately. Each of the following entries give the year and location of the contest followed by the winner of each class, nationality and the glider used. (This is thought not to be a true world championship and was just an 'International Competition'.) A list of future events is available here Gliding Grand Prix is a rather new type of gliding competition. It has simpler rules and a more spectacular appearance than conventional soaring competitions. From 1979 to 1999 women's gliding competitions were held as International European Women's Gliding Championships. From 199...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2847264 ... Read more
