3-0 out of 5 stars Descent Guide
This is a descent guide to handicapping the NFL.It does seem dated as most of the examples come from the 2002 season and before. However, there are some timeless tips and info for use if you are serious about betting on the NFL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Puts Miller's Book to Shame
Easily one of the BEST books I've read on sports handicapping.Dan Gordon is a legitimate pro gambler (unlike JR Miller author of "How pro gamblers beat the football point spread") who understands how to win.The part of the book called the "pro bettors toolkit" provide the reader with genuinely good advice which if followed properly should lead to more winners than losers.I wish he went into detail on how he makes a Letter Rating but that is just something that I am going to have to come up with on my own.For handicapping the NFL this is the only book you'll need but for other useful information I would suggest Donny P's book "win more lose less" and Stanford Wong's "Sharp Sports Betting".I definitely believe this book will help increase my ROI this coming NFL season.

5-0 out of 5 stars a master handicapper explains his craft
Dan Gordon's updated NFL handicapping book is the kind of book one doesn't so much read as study.Handicapping the NFL over a period of many years is hard work, serious work, and Gordon takes it very seriously.Properly done, it ends up amounting to a part-time job.We are not talking about making easy money betting on football.

The first point, which might be obvious to bettors but bears repeating, is that football odds as set by oddsmakers are not meant to predict the actual outcome of the game - they are meant to attract equal distributions of money bet on each side, and this is not the same thing. They have their customers, the casinos, offshore and (illegal) local books to think of.You are not their customer. There are thus opportunities for discrepancies to exist which the bettor will be able to exploit for profit.

Gordon reviews how oddsmakers come up with the line, the various regular and more exotic bets available (on which he spends very little time until the very end of the season), and the odds both mathematical and psychological/social working against the would-be winning bettor. This is all very clearly explained and well written.Further, he assesses various information sources that amateur bettors use, usually to their financial loss, such as much major media, touts, some sports services and professional commentators, all of which generally talk a good game but when their win/loss records are finally revealed are shown to be highly problematic.Worse, they tend to judge themselves against a 50% win/loss barometer, when of course the winning bettor must clear 53% just to stay even.

Further, not only knowledge and applied research, but also timing of bets proves to be highly important.Gordon is honest enough to show numerous cases where he had early access to better prices or numbers, or where these evaporated so quickly, he could not recommend a game to his service customers as that line no longer existed. In game after game one sees how a point or 1 1/2 point difference in the spread means the difference between a winning and losing bet.The NFL teams are very very close in quality overall.Personal discipline in passing on games where the number is close but not quite good enough to bet is important to long term success as well.

In the heart of the book, Gordon's handicapping system, he examines not only hard statistics, but leans heavily towards psychological motivations and factors. There is no factor one can think of to which he does not assign some value, a half point here and a half point there. He explains his starting points for the season using both letter and numerical power ratings, and how he updates each team after each game, every step of the way.The book holds seemingly nothing back.

The last half of the book follows first the Bills through the entire 2002 season, applying the factors of his system to every game they would play, whether he bet on it (and why) or not (and why not). Then he follows the full 2004 season, for each bet he made or contemplated seriously, doing the same, through the Super Bowl and a couple of proposition bets.If one were serious about learning his system, it would be worth the investment of many hours to 'replay' that system on paper, using his methods, and following how he came up with these ratings. At the end of the season he was indeed winner, though relatively modestly so.

Gordon's book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to get serious about handicapping NFL football, and stop simply throwing his money away on hunches or following the crowd. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fancy's Child
This is a remarkable book about a remarkable man. Captain Robert Barclay Allardice was one of the most famous figures in England in the period from 1800 to 1830. A self-absorbed gentleman of a minor Scottish family, with a comfortable income, Barclay broke with convention and became one of the leading figures of "The Fancy". The Fancy was the name given to wealthy and often dissolute members of the aristocracy who devoted themselves to the pleasures of sport, particularly horse racing and prizefighting. The Fancy also included large numbers of the lower classes, who, like the rich spent much of their money gambling on sporting events. In its worst sense, the Fancy combined criminals of both the higher and lower classes into one aggressive group which worked to subvert the laws of middle class England. In its best sense, the Fancy ( which Thorstein Veblen would later describe as "The Leisure Class" )was a democratic body focused upon sport which may have protected England from the class violence of revolution which racked all of Europe during the nineteenth century.

As a member of the upper class portion of the Fancy, Barclay might have simply spent his time in gambling and dissolution, but he did not. Instead he became a superb athlete and the most famous"pedestrian" of his time. "Pedestrianism" was a popular sport in the early nineteenth century when men and women were accustomed to taking long walks of many miles from place to place. The Romantic poets, Wordsworth and Coleridge, were famous walkers. Their emphasis upon Nature grew out of their habit of regularly walking 20 or 30 miles a day while composing their poems.

Captain Barclay himself would often walk 50 to 70 miles a day for pleasure. Eventually he found that his ability to walk extraordinary distances could win large bets in gambling. The book opens with the most famous of Barlcay's bets that he could walk 1000 miles in 1000 hours for 1000 guineas. This feat attracted vast crowds to both watch and bet upon the outcome. It was said that over 100,000 pounds ( 40 million pounds in today's money) was bet on this race. With his victory, Barclay became one of the most famous men of England, and a leader of the Fancy.

Barclay also interested himself in prizefighting and horse racing. He himself was a powerful amateur pugilist and a superb coachman, both activities which ordinarily were fit only for the lower classes. He knew and associated with all of the major prize fighters of the era, from Gentleman John Jackson to John Gully to Tom Cribb. He earned his title of Captain by his military activities in the Napoleonic Wars. He was a gentleman farmer with 3800 acres in Scotland and even wrote a book on an Agricultural Tour of Canada and the United States. Finally, he became a trainer of athletes when the very concept of training for a sporting event was something new and unexpected. In all he was a man's man, who when in his 70s could lift a fully grown man standing on his open hand, from the floor and place him upright on top of a table.

Peter Radford, himself an Olympic athlete, has written an absorbing and well-documented history of this fabulous man and his times. The prose is flowing and the research excellent. The only fault I found was the fact that Radford did not realize that Bill Warr, a prize fighter and friend of Barclay's, was actually the older brother of Joe Ward and had himself been convicted of manslaughter as the result of an impromptu boxing match in 1789. Ward's conviction of manslaughter was typical of the type of men with whom Barclay associated in The Fancy. ... Read more

Given the magnitude of currency speculation and sportsgambling, it is surprising that the literature contains mostlynegative forecasting results. Majority opinion still holds that shortterm fluctuations in financial markets follow random walk. In thisnon-random walk through financial and sports gambling markets, parallels are drawn between modeling short term currency movements andmodeling outcomes of athletic encounters. The forecasting concepts andmethodologies are identical; only the variables change names. If, infact, these markets are driven by mechanisms of non-random walk, theremust be some explanation for the negative forecasting results. 2-0 out of 5 stars This book is a waste
It's called "You Can Bet On It!"

It should be called "Here's some dumb stories that probably won't help."

This book is chock full of examples lacking both in explanation and instruction - it says what you need to do, but fails completely to explain either how or why.For example, the Handicapping section stresses the importance of handicapping.Well, any moderately intelligent person already knew that, but they don't know how, and that's really why they bought the book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do -NOT- follow the advice in this book, you will go broke!!!
Here's a short review that should hopefully get my point across.

If I ran a sports book I would gladly give a copy of this book to any client who wanted one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
The author is very knowledgeable and has some interesting insights. The only problem is that sometimes the book is a little bit too broad. The author advises the bettor to "make halftime bets" and to "make quality bets, and not a quantity of bets". But what types of halftime bets? In which games? What constitutes a "quality bet"? Overall a good read, despite the lack of specificity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for analysing your systems
This book is not going to tell you how to come up with a system to be profitable. Its not even going to give you many insights into how to handicap sports but it gives you the tools to know whether or not your current handicapping/system has an edge and whether it will continue. The book focuses on a lot of stastitcal analysis of your betting record as well as the best options for staking.

Well worth the read for those who are not knew to the game. Sophisticated punters will get something out of this but those new to the game will probably be a bit bamboozled and not appreciate the information provided.

Good Luck

2-0 out of 5 stars alot of stuff

I bought this book together with The Art of Betting On Baseball; most of
the critical reviewers are spot on; while I found the book a bit tedious;it was useful in a sense.

I was more impressed with The Art of Betting on Baseball.

I found the theories a bit easier to implement and I have subsequently made money using the techniques espoused by the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Information
This is a good book to help you devise your own system and not necessarily tell you how to do it.It has very good discussion on bank roll management, and you can use this book to accentuate and validate a system you have devised yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, not exactly what i was looking for though.
As a sportbettor for the better part of the last 8 years this book has more of college statistics text book feel to it.. I have a Bach in civil engineering and took classes covered these very same topics in great depth.. this book could be way over the heads of a lot of people with little to no statistical background.. i was dissapointed as it is mainly aimed to soccer and Money lines, which is hard to apply to my 2 most bet sports, (hoops and football).. i have been attempting to learn MLB and risk analysis of future wagers and this book has helped clear a few things up.. THIS IS NOT A HOW TO HANDICAP BOOK, but it does help you point out 'value' bets out, which should be included with capping a game... so in short if you love excel and statistics this book is for you.. if you gamble by feel or are just looking for a niche this book is not for you...

Great data and usuage of stastical modeling

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read before you start sports betting
I have searched and searched for a book which describes how to generate a winning betting strategy. This book tells you about the reality of sports betting and not the fact that you will win 70% of your games. It is a practical explination of all the steps and mathmatical calculations to help you understand what sports betting is about.I wish I read this book prior to my first sports bet.It explains how to research the wager and all the backend work that you need to do to evaluate a value bet.If you wanted to understand the mathmatics behind the process of betting then this is the book for you. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than a 1 star...
This is the worst book I have ever read. Buyer Beware! Both a waste of time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beating the Odds
A fast paced - FUN - read.Very entertaining and informative at the same time!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of a good $15
This is definitly one of the worst books that I've read in my life. His caddie stories sound completely fictitious which is what I am sure they are. Every story in this book seems more like a fairy tell and so made up in order to make Brandon Lang look good. If you actually do any research about his life there is more evidence that he is one of the worst sports handicappers ever then anything positive. The book would be a better read if you knew going in this guy only goal in life is to lie to people and scam them then the stories you read could be taken with a grain of salt and would come across as more on the humorous side.
If you bet sports then read this book(borrow it from someone do not purchase it!) and learn who you should FADE instead of follow!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Read I have ever undertaken
This book is about as boring and dry as I have ever picked up off the shelf in quite some time.Seriously, I threw it in the trash after 50 pages. The only good reviews have to be from friends of the authors, only explanation!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the Curtain
Honest to God, if you read this book and believe that this guy is some amazing handicapper, you are as big of a fool as he is. He touts his records that are FAKE, and ended 2009 with a bankroll of -1600 dimes. For those of you unfamiliar with 'dimes', that's $100 per 'dime'. You do the math... Is that considered 'winning'?? This book is FICTION and FABRICATION at it's finest.
He is just one of a number of sports scammers that somehow made a movie, and parlayed it into a major business. God bless the US of A and the fact that there's a SUCKER born every minute. Otherwise, he'd be out of a job.
Instead of buying this book, how about you just throw $20 in the toilet, or better yet, give $20 to the charity of your choice... THAT would be a wise investment. ... Read more

Product Description
Over the past few decades, gamblers have begun taking mathematics into account more seriously than ever before. While probability theory is the only rigorous theory that can model the hazards of gambling, even in idealized conditions, numerical probabilities are viewed not only as purely theoretical information, but also as a decision-making criterion, especially in gambling. This book presents the mathematics underlying games of chance and provides a precise account of the odds associated with all gaming events. It begins by explaining in simple terms the meaning of the concept of probability for the layman and goes on to become an enlightening journey through the mathematics of chance, randomness and risk. It then continues with the basics of discrete probability (definitions, properties, theorems and calculus formulas), combinatorics and counting arguments for those interested in the supporting mathematics. These mathematic sections may be skipped by readers who do not have a minimal background in mathematics; these readers can skip directly to the "Guide to Numerical Results" to pick the odds and recommendations they need for the desired gaming situation. Doing so is possible due to the organization of that chapter, in which the results are listed at the end of each section, mostly in the form of tables. The chapter titled "The Mathematics of Games of Chance" presents these games not only as a good application field for probability theory, but also in terms of human actions where probability-based strategies can be tried to achieve favorable results. Through suggestive examples, the reader can see what experiments, events and probability fields mean in games of chance and why and how probability formulas can be applied there. The main portion of this work is a collection of probability results for each type of game. Each game's section is packed with formulas and tables. Each section also contains a description of the game, a classification of the gaming events and the applicable probability calculations. The primary goal of this work is to allow the reader to quickly find the odds for a specific gaming situation, in order to improve his or her betting/gaming decisions. Every type of gaming event is tabulated in a logical, consistent and comprehensive manner. The complete methodology and complete or partial calculations are shown to teach players how to calculate probability for any situation, for every stage of the game for any game. Here, readers can find the real odds, returned by precise mathematical formulas and not by partial simulations that most software uses. Collections of odds are presented, as well as strategic recommendations based on those odds, where necessary, for each type of gaming situation. The book contains much new and original material that has not been published previously and provides great coverage of probabilities for the following games of chance: Dice, Slots, Roulette, Baccarat, Blackjack, Five Card Draw Poker, Texas Hold'em Poker, Lottery and Sport Bets. No formal background in mathematics is necessary to read these sections, although familiarity with some probability and set theory notions is helpful. In most cases, readers will benefit from having some college math to follow the formulas here, but this is not a requirement because the numerical results are given as summaries and tables at the end of each section. Most of casino games are predisposed to probability-based decisions. This is why the approach is not an exclusively statistical one (like many other titles published on this subject), but analytical: every gaming event is taken as an individual applied probability problem to solve. A special chapter defines the probability-based strategy and mathematically shows why such strategy is theoretically optimal. The author is a recognized authority on casino mathematics. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Probability guide to gaming.
This book is better off if used as a text book. I work on the casino floor and there is very little practical information to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very rigorous: just the facts!
Well done work and very well organized. There is no gambling strategy without math. This books explains the math applied for the most common gaming situations for the most practiced casino games. Formulas and numerical probabilities and not so-called winning strategies. Just the facts!

1-0 out of 5 stars Where'sthe editor?
Lots of annoying liitle typos in the math chapters.I can live with those, the math is correct.HOWEVER, the chapter on roulette is completely incorrect. The author assumes a 40 to 1 payoff on a single number wager but the actual payoff is 35 to 1.This is an eggregious error.Virtually every computation and scheme in that chapter is bogus and totally misleading. The author goes so far as to providing winning schemes. The rest of the book is now suspect.I don't have the patience to verify the other chapters so BEWARE! ... Read more
