Product Description
Out of the lifestyle revlutiion of the past quarter century has emerged a new kindof recreational athlete, oen more likely to pursue a physical activity that brings health benefits than to tackle a traditional "rough-and-tumble" sport. As a result, "overuse" or "chronic" injuries, such as "runner's knee" and "swimmer's shoulder", are increasingly replacing sprains, strains, and breaks as the badge of the weekend Warrior.

The sports medicine profession has responded to the rise in overuse injuries by placing greater emphasis on injury prevention, developing new diagnostic and treatment techniques, and promoting rehabilitation as an aid to full recovery. This is what Dr. Lyle J. Micheli, one of the nation's foremost sports medicine authorities, calls the "new sports medicine."

In The Sports Medicine Bible, Dr. Micheli responds to the need for more and better answers to the questions posed by recreational athletes desperate for sound medical advice that will help them return to their physical regimens as quickly as possible. He emphasizes strength and flexibility as the keys to injury prevention, encourages early motion rather than immobilization during the rehabilitation process, and recommends other proven techniques that are replacing the sports medicine techniques of past generations.

This book covers the whole spectrum of sports medicine, including special sections on nutrition, female-specific sports injuries, exercise and the elderly, structuring a workout, flexibility and strength, clothing and footwear, and proper equipment. Separate chapters examine causes and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the foot; ankle; lower leg; knee; thigh; hip, pelvis, and groin; back; shoulder; elbow; wrist; hand and finger; head and neck; and skin.

By following the guidance and guidelines embodied in The Sports Medicine Bible, the recreational athlete can heighten his or her fitness experience, while learning the most modern techniques for effectively managing sports injuries. Written in clear, straightforward language with hundreds of illustrations, The Sports Medicine Bible is destined to become an essential piece of equipment in every athlete's gym bag.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even a page on hamstring injuries? Are you kidding me?
It boggles my mind that this book can't even be bothered to devote a single page specifically to hamstring injuries and rehabilitation. This is one of the most common injuries at any level of sport, and it is inexcusable this text does not have a section specifically devoted to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book is a good place to start looking for help if you suffer a sports related injury. Naturally, it can't cover every conceivable problem but what it does cover is clearly written and helpful. I recommend it to my friends who get injured.

So far it has been the best move, I have learned new exercises to help with athlete's that I didn't know about prior to this book. The only downfall was I bought it used from someone whom claimed the book had "NO writing or Highlighting" inside and once I received the book it was filled with highlighting. If it doesn't bother you when other people have highlighted information that you might not want highlighted than go ahead and buy it used. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice for Sports Medicine Professional
This book offers the Athletic Training and other Sports Medicine Professionals good advice when working with athletes who need guidance. It is not easy to educate and counsel athletes.Too often athletes hear onlywhat they want and not what they need to hear.Since athletes are highlymotivated to achieve success in competition, they tend to focus on theirproblems and how it affect them, not others.

Athletes have multipleproblems, just like the rest of the population, the difference is, thatmost will try to work on their issues if they areidentified and givenstrategies that work.Ray and Wiese-Bjornstal do a good job of presentingproblems and solutions. They have identified the sound techniques andtheories thatwork in the counseling arena.

The authors are quick topoint out the dangers of uneducated counseling and the warning signs ofpotential serious disorders. It is fair to assume that the reader shouldhave some understanding of basic psychology, and human behavior.

Thereader should also understand sport and the different circumstances itpresents to daily living.

I have been a professional in Athletic Trainingfor over 30 years and found the text to be very helpful. It is succint andto the point but also in detail and complete on the topics discussed.Ihighly reccomend the text for the Sports Medicine Professional. ... Read more

Product Description
As a coach, you’re likely the first on the scene when one of your athletes falls ill or suffers an injury on the field of play. Are you prepared to respond? What exactly is expected of you—by your athletes, their parents, and the law?

Newly revised and updated to reflect the latest research and best practices put forth by the American Heart Association and the American Safety and Health Institute, this fourth edition of Sport First Aid provides high school, collegiate, and club sport coaches with detailed action steps for the care and prevention of more than 110 athletic injuries and illnesses.

Organized for quick reference, Sport First Aid covers protocols for conducting emergency action steps and providing life support; performing the physical assessment; administering first aid for bleeding, tissue damage, and unstable injuries; moving an injured athlete; and returning athletes to play.

Also featured are the most recent guidelines for using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the Heimlich maneuver, and automated external defibrillators (AED) as well as the latest information on controlling bleeding, treating concussions, and preventing and recognizing methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus infections (MRSA).

An expanded section on anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs assists coaches in recognizing the effects of performance enhancers and in educating their athletes on the dangers of steroid use. To prevent injuries from occurring in the first place, strategies for reducing athletes’ risk of injury or illness are also featured, such as implementing preseason conditioning programs, creating safe playing environments, planning for weather emergencies, ensuring proper fitting and use of protective equipment, enforcing proper sport skills and safety rules, and developing a medical emergency plan.

Sport First Aid is a potentially lifesaving resource that you and your coaching staff can rely on to make smart decisions when encountering emergency situations with your athletes.

Produced by the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), Sport First Aid is the text for the ASEP Sport First Aid course, which, along with Coaching Principles, Coaching Technical and Tactical Skills, and CPR/AED for Coaches courses, makes up the curriculum for the ASEP Bronze Level coaching certification program. 5-0 out of 5 stars great
Full of great drawings by Salvador Beltran, excellent quality MRI images, and handful boxes. The most didactic book on msk MRI. Greatly improved from the previous version. Definetly worth it, much better than the one from the Diagnostic Imaging series.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO1 book in orthopaedic sugery
Best book in orthopaedic surgery. Huge amount of photos and illustraions, in detail review, almost every disease and the sports injuries are covered in this book. Very practical, easy to read, must-have for orthopadeic surgeon. This is not only the best textbook, this is the beautiful artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars incredible
This is the definitive work on orthopedic imaging. The illustrations and images are all of high quality.Unlike many other reference books, this one actually gives you an approach to image interpretation for each joint, in addition to detailed discussions of the pathology. There is also a sample report with images provided at the beginning of each chapter.Although it is pricey, it certainly blows the diagnostic imaging book out of the water.Highly recommended for any radiolgist interested in providing high quality reports to your referring orthopedists.

5-0 out of 5 stars High end orthopedic imaging text
The illustrations are beautiful. There has been tremendous attention to detail. This is a definitive tome on high end orthopedic imaging. It contains information and concepts that are pretty cutting edge (that seem to just be getting into the literature). If you're looking for THE text on orthopedic imaging, this is the one.It BLOWS away the DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING Series - Orthopedics (by Dr. Stoller also).

This is a very large series of 2 books.Like that it's broken up into upper and lower extremity.Initially, cost freaked me out a bit. But, for what you get ... particularly the really high quality images and illustrations (and lots of them), it's well worth it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Patient Advisor
I am happy with this book. I have used the first edition of the book and liked that I could give my patients print outs of the exercises we were doing. I also like that it puts an explanation of the injuries in general terms so the patient can understand their injury.
I purchased this edition of the book and the only thing I'm unhappy with is that the pages are very thin. I tear a page w/ every turn.
Other than that...the book its self it very useful! ... Read more
