Book Description
Clinical Sports Medicine is a complete practical guide book to musculoskeletal medicine and physical therapy, covering all aspects of diagnosis and management of sports-related injuries and physical activity.

With over 1000 full color pages and a free patient information CD, Clinical Sports Medicine adopts an easy-to-use, symptom-oriented approach and describes multidisciplinary methods of treatment

It is a vital reference for all clinicians in musculoskeletal health including physiotherapists, masseurs, general practitioners, personal trainers, athletic trainers, and orthopedic surgeons. It is also important reading for advanced coaches, insightful athletes and students of sports-related subjects such as kinesiology, human movement studies and human kinetics.

In the fully-updated, full-colour, expanded Third Edition (DVD also available) Clinical Sports Medicine is established as a leading text on sports medicine; the 2nd edition received a ‘Book of the Year’ award. This 3rd edition is a major upgrade for content, visual appeal, and readability. Every chapter has been updated for this landmark 3rd edition and there are six entirely new chapters. More than 1000 full color photos and purpose-drawn artwork show presentations and demonstrate treatment techniques.

Clinical Sports Medicine explores many important aspects of sports medicine:

- fundamental principles of sports medicine
- diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries
- enhancement of sports performance
- dealing with special groups of participants, including disabled and older athletes
- management of medical problems
- practical aspects of sports medicine

Clinical Sports Medicine has been fully updated from the popular 2nd edition (2000). It is even more practical, now superbly illustrated, easy-to-read and packed with substantially updated and new material. There are samples of several chapters online including the whole "Pain in the Achilles region" chapter. This book describes a completely symptom-oriented approach to treating clinical problems.

The practitioner can flick to the chapter that describes the patient presentation (e.g., longstanding groin pain, acute ankle injuries) and review the likely differential diagnoses, the clinical approach and the full colour pictures of the physical examination (physical examination for several major systems are also available as a separate DVD - 0074716972).

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference for any medical professional
Awesome book !!!I'm a P.T. and Athletic Trainer getting
back into sports medicine and this book is a "must" for
your library. It's well organized and covers such a variety
of subject matter regarding injuries, rehabilitation, specific

by athletes. It also contains functional anatomical references
that aid in the evaluation and differential diagnosis of
the injury. Great Book !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource
The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries.I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso.

Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for physical therapists - incredible value

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used!
The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description

Out of the lifestyle revlutiion of the past quarter century has emerged a new kindof recreational athlete, oen more likely to pursue a physical activity that brings health benefits than to tackle a traditional "rough-and-tumble" sport. As a result, "overuse" or "chronic" injuries, such as "runner's knee" and "swimmer's shoulder", are increasingly replacing sprains, strains, and breaks as the badge of the weekend Warrior.

The sports medicine profession has responded to the rise in overuse injuries by placing greater emphasis on injury prevention, developing new diagnostic and treatment techniques, and promoting rehabilitation as an aid to full recovery. This is what Dr. Lyle J. Micheli, one of the nation's foremost sports medicine authorities, calls the "new sports medicine."

In The Sports Medicine Bible, Dr. Micheli responds to the need for more and better answers to the questions posed by recreational athletes desperate for sound medical advice that will help them return to their physical regimens as quickly as possible. He emphasizes strength and flexibility as the keys to injury prevention, encourages early motion rather than immobilization during the rehabilitation process, and recommends other proven techniques that are replacing the sports medicine techniques of past generations.

This book covers the whole spectrum of sports medicine, including special sections on nutrition, female-specific sports injuries, exercise and the elderly, structuring a workout, flexibility and strength, clothing and footwear, and proper equipment. Separate chapters examine causes and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the foot; ankle; lower leg; knee; thigh; hip, pelvis, and groin; back; shoulder; elbow; wrist; hand and finger; head and neck; and skin.

By following the guidance and guidelines embodied in The Sports Medicine Bible, the recreational athlete can heighten his or her fitness experience, while learning the most modern techniques for effectively managing sports injuries. Written in clear, straightforward language with hundreds of illustrations, The Sports Medicine Bible is destined to become an essential piece of equipment in every athlete's gym bag.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even a page on hamstring injuries? Are you kidding me?
It boggles my mind that this book can't even be bothered to devote a single page specifically to hamstring injuries and rehabilitation. This is one of the most common injuries at any level of sport, and it is inexcusable this text does not have a section specifically devoted to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book is a good place to start looking for help if you suffer a sports related injury. Naturally, it can't cover every conceivable problem but what it does cover is clearly written and helpful. I recommend it to my friends who get injured.

Chapter 1-4 tells about why this book was written, and the basic Point of the book. Chapter 6-17 is about the different sections of the body. The last 3 Chapters are about miscellaneous stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok, but falls short
This is a good help when preparing for the CAG in Sports Medicine. It falls short of the expectations though. The question format does not match the actual questions and the difficulty level is below the actual exam level.
Having said that, it is a great tool due to the fact that there are not many collections of questions in regards to PCSM out there.

So to say, "among the blind, the one-eyed is king".

2-0 out of 5 stars uneven
I used the 2005 edition of the book by the same authors and found the responses and usefulness very uneven.
While a good number of the over 100 chapters meet reader expectation and offer reasonable explanations as to why a particular question was correct or others incorrect, there are other chapters that have very basic or NO explanations at all, i.e. chapter 43 on esoteric MRI questions just gives the correct letter and a reference - not helpful at all for exam preparation.
Many editorial oversights with incorrect letters for the correct answer.

All in all, and looking back at the actual exam, only few questions/topics came up and the impact of reviewing this book on the exam was quite limited.I wish I had had a better resource. ... Read more

Best book in orthopaedic surgery. Huge amount of photos and illustraions, in detail review, almost every disease and the sports injuries are covered in this book. Very practical, easy to read, must-have for orthopadeic surgeon. This is not only the best textbook, this is the beautiful artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars incredible
This is the definitive work on orthopedic imaging. The illustrations and images are all of high quality.Unlike many other reference books, this one actually gives you an approach to image interpretation for each joint, in addition to detailed discussions of the pathology. There is also a sample report with images provided at the beginning of each chapter.Although it is pricey, it certainly blows the diagnostic imaging book out of the water.Highly recommended for any radiolgist interested in providing high quality reports to your referring orthopedists.

5-0 out of 5 stars High end orthopedic imaging text
The illustrations are beautiful. There has been tremendous attention to detail. This is a definitive tome on high end orthopedic imaging. It contains information and concepts that are pretty cutting edge (that seem to just be getting into the literature). If you're looking for THE text on orthopedic imaging, this is the one.It BLOWS away the DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING Series - Orthopedics (by Dr. Stoller also).

This is a very large series of 2 books.Like that it's broken up into upper and lower extremity.Initially, cost freaked me out a bit. But, for what you get ... particularly the really high quality images and illustrations (and lots of them), it's well worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for MSK radiologist but a little dry
This remains an essential textbook for musculoskeletal radiologists although one criticism would be that is a little dry .It steers clear of the opinion which makes books by Resnick or Helms so entertaining and useful. Stoller and some of the authors he has used for the chapters are enormously experiencedand it would be good to read a more personal perspective .

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Text for Orthopaedic MRI
This book provides thorough reviews of disease process involving each joint. There are also chapters discussing bone and soft tissue tumors. Illustrations include MR images, intraoperative images, and pathologicspecimen. I have found it very informative and helpful for my radiologyresidency. It is quite pricy with a price tag of nearly $300. So it isprobably only meant for those of us who are really dedicated. ... Read more
