Product Description

Using 1,298 full-color anatomic drawings and 230 3-Tesla MR normal anatomy images, this atlas provides a detailed view of the intricacies of musculoskeletal anatomy. Dr. Stoller, through extensive cadaver dissections and imaging, has developed and proven new concepts on many musculoskeletal injuries, including hip impingement and patterns of meniscal tears. In this atlas, he provides radiologists, orthopaedists, and other specialists with the anatomic knowledge needed to accurately diagnose musculoskeletal injuries.

Muscles are shown in great detail, including origins and insertions. Skeletal structures are shown in relation to muscles, tendons, nerves, and ligaments. Clear legends describe the function and directional movement of muscles. Illustrations show both normal anatomy and mechanisms of injury, and Pearls and Pitfalls sections reinforce critical information.

4-0 out of 5 stars One orthopedic PA's opinion
I have really enjoyed looking through this book.It has great illustrations for all the muscles in the body and I really appreciate the grouping of muscles by innervation. Also, I was pleasantly surprised to find the added discussions on various orthopedic conditions. This is a convenient addition to an atlas. My only complaint is the skeleton itself is never focused on in the atlas portion. In retrospect, this makes sense as it is written by an expert on MRI.Still, I've already used it numerous times in my practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorely needed schematic atlas
Wow.This is an excellent investment for MSK radiologists. This book is a schematic atlas of anatomy and pathology. There are some basic MRI images for anatomy at the beginning of the tome, but by and large, this is all illustrations. This has beautiful LARGE format illustrations of practically everything you could every imagine in MSK imaging. In particular, the detailed anatomy of the small parts (fingers/hand, forefoot, toes) is excellent. The section on meniscal tears is really gorgeous. Also, each joint (at the beginning) has the depiction of color coded nerve anatomy (life saver). Also, there's kind of a cool like section at the beginning that are thumbnails of all of the major processes/entities in a particular joint.Very, very easy as a quick reference.

At first, I thought it was just the images from the 2 volume text, but it looks like more than 1/2 of the images are new.Which says a lot, given the huge numbers of images/schematics/illustrations in this book and the revised "red book".Of those that are duplicates, I like the ones in this book better (larger, better color tone, etc). This is just a very well finished appearance.Obviously the publisher cared about the quality of the finished print product (so rare these days).

At first the very large size and format of the book and images might startle you. But, after getting used to it, you'll wonder why more text books don't have better images like these.Dr. Stoller has done it once again.Kudos ...

What's next?3T MR atlas?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great complement to the two volume.
The knowledge of David Stoller and the art work of Salvador Beltran make this book a must have for orthopedic imaging. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars yeah it's okay
This book is a step up from common sense in that it has a few more details when dealing with certain injured body parts. But unless you're going to be in the middle of nowhere doing extreme sports, you probably don't need this book.If you hurt yourself, the procedure is pretty much the same for everything: rest and professional help when you need it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Weird in Spots...
I just got this book today. It's a great idea, a sports injury handbook organized by bodypart **and** sport, but right off the bat, while browsing, I notice a few oddities: on page 221, Dr. Levy claims "exercise machines require you to lift too much weight," which is weird because one can certainly adjust the resistance on most any exercise machine out there -- and he makes that statement while advising free weights!Any bodybuilder or powerlifter knows that it is typically harder to use free weights than a machine: for example, dumbbell curls are much harder than machine biceps curls at the same weight. Also, on page 17 there is an illustration of the behind-the-neck pull-up, which is potentially more dangerous for some people than the regular front-of-the-neck type of pull-up.That's a very strange thing to see in a book on sports injuries!Though it's not exactly a dangerous movement, it does place the rotator cuff at greater risk of injury, especially for people who might have weak muscles and tendons there to begin with. The regular pull-up works the same muscles just as well, but without that slightly higher risk of injury.

I hope I don't find any other strange advice or illustrations in this book....

4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate to the athlete
I have not read this book, but the reviews indicate it is for the current athlete with an injury. One reviewer unfairly slammed Marilyn Moffat's book since it was not right for him.I read and evaluated her Physical Therapy book from the library as a guide for my 84 year old father. He was a super fit elderly sculler who wore out his beach volleyball playing granddaughters double sculling for 2 hours at a shot, and was in the hospital for 14 months recovering from surgery to reduce intracranial bleeding, which was followed by seizures, pneumonia, and kidney failure. He essentially woke up a year later a live but terribly weak shadow of himself. He needs rehabilitation from, literally zero strength. He is learning to walk, talk, and eat, and more. He's gone from feeling like 40 to feeling like a hundred, but with no long slide of good memories.Very discouraging. Her book will help me start him back to a pleasant final years, from a zero base. I will buy that book to help him.I may be able to use this book for myself, but he could not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed . . .
An excellent book. At the age of 40 I pay for my active lifestyle with some aches and pains; this book is helping me live pain free. Unlike many PT type books, Levy is specific with his advice, not making you waste your time on dozens of stretches and exercises. He'll lead you directly to what you need to know to fix the problem. Other books seem shy about recommending specific exercises for specific problems; Levy's not. I ordered several of these types of books at once and eventually resold all the others. This is the one I kept.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL MATERIAL ON FITNESS &SPORTS INJURIES
Alan Levy has done a fantastic job in putting together so much in one book. It has nearly everything an athlete requires to not only stay in shape but also treating all kinds of injuries from little niggles to thosethat need surgery. And its all been bonded together in a very organized andmethodical manner.

To begin with Dr. Levy emphasizes the importance ofwarming up and stretching before and after workouts and shows how to dothis. Next, he explains about nutrition for athletes. After that he laysout the benefits of and what it really means to stay healthy. This isfollowed by First-Aid for sports.

Starting with the fifth chapter heprovides detailed information about what to know about the various parts ofthe body, their intricacies, and how they areused in sports and preciselywhat occurs with them when we feel pain or discomfort. For example, chapter10 is about the Thigh and Hip, Chapter 6for the Shoulder, and so on. Inaddition, he suggests various ways of diagnosing injuries correctly and howbest to treat them. Whether an economical ready-made arch support willwork, or one must see a qualified physician for a particular problem, Dr.Levy seems one not to miss a trick.

Then there is a chapter each on aspecific sport and the most likely injuries to take place in every one ofthose and what all can be done to prevent them but if they do happen, thenhow to treat them. From Baseball to Running, Golf to Skiing, it haseverything.

At the end he also suggests what to look for in a SportsSpecialist.

Its only drawback is that understanding some of the materialcan be a daunting task as the lay person does not possess the expertise ofDr. Levy in Sportsmedicine.

And last but not the least, my kneeailment got cured courtesy of following the treatment plan outlined in theSports Injury Handbook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book for any physical medicine doctor
I bought this book on the recommendation of Dr. Bill Moreau (see his review here as well).I have my doctorate in chiropractic and have over 10 years of post-doc training.I have never come across such a complete source/reference for sports medicine. This book, from 1992, is certainly not out of date...in fact, many of the topics were so ahead of their time that they're only now being implemented in sports med.My Sports Diplomate written examination incorporated a lot of information from this book...now I know why!I refer back to it quite often. If you can locate this book for under $500.00, buy it...it is well worth it...ask yourself, how often do 'old' reference texts go up in price so much???Well, not too often...every sports med. doc. should have a copy of this book on the shelf...and better than that, they should refer to it often to keep their knowledge base sharp. This is truly the holy grail of sports med. books...others can sit next to it on a shelf, but they'll just be filling space as you will most always reach for this one....Buy it...it's worth every penny!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Sports Text
This is the one dog-eared text on my bookshelf that I would never loan out to anyone. Written in a concise and to the point format this is the foundational textbook for anyone who cares for athletes. A favorite of mine is the "Quick Facts" and "Practice Points" that are included in the 24 chapters. If you are only going to purchase one sports medicine textbook this is the one to get. Lets hope the next edition comes out as planned so we can actually find this textbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Physical Therapist's Must Have
I have been using this book for years and find it to be the most comprehensive, thorough, and accurate tool for assessment and treatment of sports injuries from head to toe.I especially like this author because he is was a physical therapist who went on to become an orthopedic surgeon. This undoubtedly gives him a wonderful ability to combine overall physical assessment with an MDs assessment. He gives great side notes and provides the reader with all options available for treatment, from conservative to aggressive.A must have for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource

5-0 out of 5 stars if you have pediatric patients in your practice-you should buy this book/DVD
I am so pleased that I made this purchase.Having limited exposure to sports medicine during residency, the book/DVD are excellent. Both are divided into chapters: ankle/foot, knee and lower leg, shoulder, wrist and elbow, and hip and spine. The DVD is especially helpful, as Dr. Metzl will examine one of the specific areas mentioned in a pediatric patient.During the exam, he provides concise and pertinent information regarding the anatomy, how to properly assess pain and injury in order to diagnose the patient, and then what exercise/treatment is indicated. There are also x-rays and case studies that he reviews. The book covers the same material, but in more detail and also includes articles related to sports medicine as well.
A very comprehensive book/DVD for the amount of information that is covered.
