3-0 out of 5 stars not what was expected
This is not a very good book.It is so vague and definetly what was expected.I would not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on the Money
I purchased this book as a "sequel" to another Liz Applegate book, Eat Smart, Play Hard. This is a must read for anyone interested in performing his/her best at a favorite physical activity or simply desiring a more healthy lifestyle. Since making a few changes to my diet I have lost weight and improved my performance during my endurance activities. What you eat and when you eat it truly matters.Like anything else, there is no magic here. You won't instantly smoke all your buddies on your next group bike ride if you make some changes to your diet. However, you can maximize your current abilities and set the stage for more physical gains.I have never felt better both during and post exercise. No fad diets will be found here. What you will find is a common sense approach to a lifestyle that is centered around healthy eating and exercise.Ms. Applegate is both encouraging of a healthy diet and realistic enough to know people need to have "comfort" foods every once in awhile. This book stands above the "fad diet of the week" chaos cluttering the bookstores. ... Product Description

An essential reference for students and practitioners working with exercise electrocardiograms (ECGs), Practical ECG for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine guides readers from theory to applied interpretation of normal and abnormal ECG traces. The text is based on the authors’ clinical experience, published research, and over a decade of dedicated study on the interpretation of ECGs from clinical patients to elite athletes both at rest and during exercise.

This resource offers clear protocols for ECGs with an emphasis on athletes. With over 70 ECG readouts to examine, readers can practice and refine their ECG interpretation skills and increase their understanding of heart conditions identifiable through ECG testing. Troubleshooting tips throughout the text provide quick solutions to problems that may occur during ECG testing, and detailed information on interpreting the ECGs is provided for numerous conditions that practitioners are likely to encounter in real-life practice.

Divided into three parts, Practical ECG for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine begins with an overview of heart anatomy and function and a review of the methods for monitoring heart rate and function. Part II of the text describes the ECG in detail at rest and during exercise, with an emphasis on measurement and interpretation. In particular, chapter 4 examines normal and abnormal ECG findings with a detailed discussion of cardiac abnormalities. Each abnormality is accompanied by a sample ECG trace. Chapter 5 focuses on the how the exercise ECG may be used as a tool in the identification of a variety of pathologies, including coronary artery disease and exercise-induced arrhythmias, and how the ECG can assist in the differentiation of pathologic and physiologic enlargement of the left ventricle.

A special focus on the athlete’s heart follows in part III. Because physiologic adaptations associated with chronic physical training may mimic those observed in pathologic processes, part III discusses the anomalies often present in athletic individuals at rest and during exercise. This part also includes six case studies, which discuss specific problems encountered in dealing with athletes’ hearts and provide in-depth examples of conditions identifiable through an exercise ECG.

Because the ECG is so widely used in the assessment of cardiac electrical function, morphology, and circulation, understanding a normal ECG at rest and during exercise and being able to interpret findings are becoming increasingly important for noncardiologists, including health professionals, sports medicine specialists, physiotherapists, clinical exercise physiologists, and sport and exercise scientists. With its straightforward approach, Practical ECG for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is a valuable resource for those studying and working in the field of exercise, sports medicine, and sport science as well as health professionals working with athletic and sedentary individuals at rest and in exercise stress testing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing what's going on inside helps you function well on the outside.
Knowing what's going on inside the body during exercise is a critical component of training. Many decades ago, the late Bruce Lee monitored his bodily functions in various ways while training. He, like other elite athletes, knew that it helps them perform at peak levels.

In this book, the reader is guided from theory to applied interpretation of normal and abnormal ECG traces.

"Exertion-related symptoms are the primary indication for exercise testing; however, it is also valuable in the assessment of functional and cardiorespiratory capacity, disease severity and prognosis, and pre- and postdischarge testing."

We've heard about athletes in the prime of their lives and careers collapsing while playing their sport and dying of an arrhythmia. From the book we read, "Exercise-induced arrhythmias can be determined by answering . . . questions to those posed when evaluating an ECG at rest: What is the atrial rhythm? What is the ventricular rhythm? Is the AV conduction normal? Are there any unusual complexes? Is the rhythm dangerous?"

The book is a reference for students and practitioners who work with exercise electrocardiograms (ECGs) and should be must-reading. The text is based on the authors' clinical experience, published research, and over a decade of dedicated study on the interpretation of ECGs from clinical patients to elite athletes while at rest and during exercise.

I found it most interesting and, although short in pages, long on information.

"The editors are outstanding, experienced physicians with a great wealth of knowledge as well as practical proficiency in this field. The other contributors are also first-rate authors, and all have done a wonderful job in researching the subjects and writing them up in a way that is easy to read and understand. It will be embraced because of its ease of use and its valuable, practical contents. I am sure it will find its way to medical libraries throughout the nation or world and to most offices for primary care clinicians. I received the textbook within the week that I ordered it, and I used standard shipping. So that was awesome. Also, the book was in the exact condition as it was described. This seller did really well. Thanks so much.

2-0 out of 5 stars ACSM's Resource Manual
As a resource manual for passing the ACSM's HFS Certification Exam it leaves a lot to be desired. For a 3rd edition it is painfully full of typo errors which include wrong answers for the review tests which makes you doubt your knowledge. In addition it only covers about 1/2 of what's on the exam.To be fair the authors do suggest that it not be the only resourse used to prepare for the test.I strongly suggest that you also purchase ACSM's Resource Manual for Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription and use it as your main source.
