5-0 out of 5 stars fun book!
The book is fun and breezy.
Glad I bought a used copy, the service was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars top 100 greatest sports movies
This book was a great compendium of the best sports movies. My husband and I agree with many of the choices and this book has also made us aware of several movies which we have not seen, but are now eager to watch based on the recomendations made.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea but Written by the Wrong People
The idea of putting together a book on the top 100 sports movies is a good one--but in this case it's written by a couple guys who spout opinions instead of offering much in the way of objective details. One is from NFL films and the other is a sports radio host.Though both claim to have sportswriting background, they didn't put in the work to write a detailed, fact-filled book in the subject.

Each film gets a couple pages which includes a plot summary and then some tidbits like "best line," "goof" and "reality check."It reads more like a Wikipedia entry than a book that has been well researched. They include a few opinions from athletes, but mostly it is their own spouting about what they think are good and bad films.

A number of facts are wrong. They admit in the opening that they don't include boxoffice results as a measure of a film's success. And they also "did not include the three highest-grossing sports movies of all time," which they list as The Waterboy,The Longest Yard remake and Talladega Nights, since they are "frat boy comedies."Huh?They don't put them in a book just because of the style of sports film? They also err because the animated film Cars (which they do include in a list of children's sports films) actually beat all the others at the boxoffice.

Some of their choices are so strange that in the end the reader concludes that there aren't 100 great sports films--there may be about 40 or 50 of them. They include a number of movies that most have never heard of and their rankings are so arbitrary that beyond the top 15 the order doesn't make much sense.

Bingo Long at number 39 yet they only rank Rudy #57? Silly fluff like The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh is included at #100? Then widely-loved films like White Men Can't Jump is only #66, beat by movies you have never heard of like Sugar (which is about Dominican Republic baseball players--and one of the authors admits that he used to live there covering baseball.Hmmm--wonder why it's on this list?). Who can take them seriously after seeing that?

They also appear very biased toward boxing movies (including a number of obscure ones) and have way too many recent movies on the list that are hardly instant classics. And they include movies that aren't really true "sports" films, such as The Hustler and Rounders. Meanwhile they slam a number of true sports films on their list as not being realistic enough--so why rank them on a top 100 list if the authors are going to demean them?

This would have worked better if written by a Sports Illustrated researcher who did the work involved to dig up great details and then present them in a more objective way.As it is, it's nice to skim through but doesn't provide much new insight into any of the films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended for any sports or movie general-interest library
The Ultimate Book of Sports Movies features 100 sports films deemed the greatest of all time and adds in fun features, facts, and original contributions from over 100 superstars. The result is a survey that offers not just the top 100 films with movies from every sport in the field to synopsis and sidebars of information. Very highly recommended for any sports or movie general-interest library.

5-0 out of 5 stars RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "IF YOU LOVE TO DISSECT SPORTS MOVIES YOU'LL BE IN HEAVEN WITH THIS BOOK!"
Any fanatical sports loving enthusiast who has also done due diligence off the "field" in his life... and waded through the millions of everyday movies made in the history of Hollywood... to find the few sports oriented "gems" and outright "classics"... will be rewarded for their efforts by buying this book. This is the *SUPER-BOWL-RING*... *HEAVYWEIGHT-CHAMPIONSHIP-BELT*... *GOLD-MEDAL*... compilation of sports movies. The authors have done an absolutely unbelievable job of culling through cinematic history... all the way back to the silent movie days... to pick the *ONE-HUNDRED-GREATEST-SPORTS-MOVIES-OF-ALL-TIME*! That alone could represent an ambitious individual's life work... but these sports loving authors... representing the underappreciated legions of men (and women) who not only want to rave... and rage... about the top one-hundred... but we also want to throw in a few piercing comments about which movies stink! But hold on! If you're like me... if this truly is our *DREAM-BOOK*... then it should be a printed version of what I/you want to represent the way we actually act in front of our TV... or in a movie theatre... or in a bar... in a "friendly" discussion/argument... with friends and foes alike. So if that's the case... how about:

*A LIST OF TEN ACTORS WHO ARE A DISGRACE TO ATHLETES AND SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO PLAY ONE*

*A LIST OF TEN ACTORS WHO PASS THE GRADE AS ATHLETES*

*HOW ABOUT THE BEST LINE IN EACH OF THE ONE-HUNDRED MOVIES?* An example in my favorite baseball movie of all-time "FIELD-OF-DREAMS" (Note: the author's admit it would be too easy to list, "IF YOU BUILD IT, HE WILL COME." Or, "HEY, IS THIS HEAVEN?" "NO, THIS IS IOWA." So they go right to the awe-inspiring poetry: "THE ONE CONSTANT THROUGH ALL THE YEARS, RAY, HAS BEEN BASEBALL. AMERICA HAS ROLLED BY LIKE AN ARMY OF STEAMROLLERS. IT HAS BEEN ERASED LIKE A BLACKBOARD, REBUILT AND ERASED AGAIN. BUT BASEBALL HAS MARKED THE TIME. THIS FIELD, THIS GAME-IT'S A PART OF OUR PAST, RAY. IT REMINDS US OF ALL THAT ONCE WAS GOOD AND IT COULD BE AGAIN. OH, PEOPLE WILL COME RAY. PEOPLE WILL MOST DEFINITELY COME."

Wow! There are many, many, places that the author's readily admit a box of Kleenex is required to watch certain movies. But if this is truly my/our dream book there should be more. How about:

*Reality Check* - where the director blew it in many of these classic movies such as when Shoeless Joe Jackson bats right and throws left. In real life Jackson threw right and batted left. (Just the type of things I/you yell at the screen all the time.)

*Lists of Sports Flicks For Kids*
*Great Sports Scenes In Non-Sports Movies*
*All-Time Movie Baseball Team*
*All-Time Movie Football Team*

Perhaps one of the most thought provoking features in the book is the *PIVOTAL-SCENE* section in each movie such as the one in *HE-GOT-GAME*: "AS THE TRASH TALK GROWS NASTIER, JAKE LOSES HIS EDGE-AND HIS ENERGY. JESUS IS BIGGER, FASTER AND, ULTIMATELY, MENTALLY STRONGER. THE ICIER JESUS GETS, THE MORE HE DOMINATES. IN FACT, HE IS USING THE LESSONS WE SAW JAKE TEACH HIM YEARS AGO. EVEN AS HE SLAYS HIS FATHER, HE IS VALIDATING HIM.

There are many other lists and endless bits of delicious sports and movie minutiae that are akin to precious jewels. This is not only a great read... but it will become a valuable reference book for years to come. It even recommends how "re-watchable" the flick is and ends each movie section with a famous personality telling you why that particular movie is his all-time favorite.

I highly recommend you buy this book because it has so much value on so many different levels.

Product Description

Sports films are popular forms of entertainment around the world, but beyond simply amusing audiences, they also reveal much about class, race, gender, sexuality, and national identity. In All-Stars and Movie Stars, Ron Briley, Michael K. Schoenecke, and Deborah A. Carmichael explore the interplay between sports films and critical aspects of our culture, examining them as both historical artifacts and building blocks of ideologies, values, and stereotypes. The book covers not only Hollywood hits such as Field of Dreams and Miracle but also documentaries such as The Journey of the African American Athlete and international cinema, such as the German film The Miracle of Bern. The book also explores television coverage of sports, commenting on the relationship of media to golf and offering a new perspective on the culture and politics behind the depictions of the world's most popular pastimes. The first part of the book addresses how sports films represent the cultural events, patterns, and movements of the times in which they were set, as well as the effect of the media and athletic industry on the athletes themselves. Latham Hunter examines how the baseball classic The Natural reflects traditional ideas about gender, heroism, and nation, and Harper Cossar addresses how the production methods used in televised golf affect viewers. The second section deals with issues such as the growth of women's involvement in athletics, sexual preference in the sports world, and the ever-present question of race by looking at sports classics such as Rocky, Hoosiers, and A League of Their Own. Finally, the authors address the historical and present-day role sports play in the international and political arena by examining such films as Visions of Eight and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. This important and unique collection illuminates the prominent role that sports play in society and how that role is reflected in film. Analysis of the depiction of sports in film and television provides a deeper understanding of the appeal that sports hold for people worldwide and of the forces behind the historic and cultural traditions linked to sports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knockout!!
Williams book is an in depth look at sports related films.Although the theme of competitive sports is a consistent link throughout his list of 100 movies, the varied themes that intertwine these films tell the stories of their times as well as illuminate the universal experiences that we all share to some degree.
Williams provides the reader with a background in film history, a look at the creative process, and he also reveals the life affirming stories that are not always apparent on the field of play but play out in these films.
Besides the well thought out and illuminating text, there are many accompanying photos in this intelligently written reference to the greatest sports films.
I don't necessarily agree with all of his choices, I would think that the original version of Angels in the Outfield should have found a place somewhere in the top one hundred as well as the Dizzy Dean story, Pride of St. Louis. That being said, I discovered the film entitled This Sporting Life in Sports Cinema which I was not aware of, and found it to be a remarkable movie. I wish I could find Phar Lap as well.
If you are looking for an intelligent take on sports themed movies, this is a book worthy of your time, you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will be a contenda...
Ok, so I know that references 'On the Waterfront,' but I think this book could really be huge.Any time someone publishes a top 100 list, critics are sure to disagree. But whether you agree with him or not, Randy Williams did an excellent job of highlighting some of the best sports movies ever.Everything from 'College' to 'White Men Can't Jump' to 'Million Dollar Baby'...movies like 'Breaking Away' and 'Brian's Song' that my parents had me watch when I was little (I still love the music from Brian's Song) bring back the memories.Tons of pictures, a throrough yet brief synopsis for each flick, and some cool stuff at the back (actor's comments on their favorite sports movies, trivia, and an Academy award list) make this a great 'anytime' book.Wondering what to get the sports fanatic in your house for Christmas?Problem solved!!! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Mess
The Kindle version of this book is replete with repeated phrases and broken up words, making it a very annoying read. As of this moment, after searching Amazon for nearly an hour, it appears there is no refund option available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun with Facts--Very WEIRD Facts...
The Ultimate Book of Top 10 Lists is subtitled A Mind-boggling Collection of Fun, Fascinating and Bizarre Facts on Movies, Music, Sports, Crime, Celebrities, History, Trivia, and More, a mouth-boggling title/sub-title combination if ever there was one.

Like many other titles in this genre, it is filled with strange trivia and minutiae. Each entry in its lists of ten is described or its inclusion is justified in a brief paragraph. Unlike many other titles in this genre, it also contains some good advice -- hints and tips for living better, enjoying more, and preparing for the future (a lot of stuff that provokes, "hmmmm...why didn't I think of that?").

You may not need the "Top 10 Prison Survival Tips" if you take the "Top 10 Tips for Outrunning the Cops" to heart. There are top-10s of cooking tips; ways to appear intelligent, live frugally, win arguments, and remove stains; and prepare for another depression (important to read with the related "Top 10 Tips for Surviving the Street"). Of course, it's not the useful information that is the most entertaining.

The first of its 14 chapters gets right down to the good stuff, or as the author puts it, "Bizarre Stuff." Urban legends are debunked, medical anomalies are described, and (for the e-shoppers out there) "Top Ten Bizarre Things You Can Buy on Amazon.com" are revealed. Religion and science, people and nature, movies and music, and literature and history all have their own chapters (as well as food and drink, crime, tips for life, travel, and the ever-popular miscellaneous).

Browsing through the table of contents entices with "Codes You Aren't Meant to Know," "Poisonous Foods We Love to Eat," and "Modern Methods of Execution." The Ultimate Book of Top 10 Lists is 706 pages long, and even if you tell yourself you're not interested in some of the topics, you'll find yourself reading your way through to the last page.

Many of the lists are funny, some are sad, others are shocking; best of all, there's so much in The Ultimate Book of Top 10 Lists with which you are unfamiliar or were only vaguely aware that it could be included in "Top 10 Tips for Sounding Smarter than You Are."

Keep The Ultimate Book of Top 10 Lists in the car and read it while you're waiting in line at Motor Vehicles or sitting in a waiting room, the bathroom for brief reading (but don't tell anyone or you'll never have access to the privy), next to the bed for some light reading before dropping off, or anywhere that offers short reading opportunities. Warning: The Ultimate Book of Top 10 Lists is addictive and there's really no such thing as"reading just one list." As with potato chips, one leads to another, and another, and...

Bottom Line: Would I buy The Ultimate Book of Top 10 Lists? Yes, I've always liked books of lists, and this one is particularly entertaining. Turn to any page and be shocked, amused, scared, mystified, or amazed.

Product Description
Two-year-old Neil Reagan stared at his new brother and squawked, “I wanted a sister, not a loud crying brother!” Little did big brother Neil know that someday his baby brother would become the fortieth president of the United States.

In this colorful biography, Libby Hughes chronicles the life of Ronald Wilson Reagan, beginning in the small, remote town of Tampico, Illinois, and ending ninety-three years later at his home in Bel-Air, California. Reagan started his diverse career as an Iowa radio sportscaster and later acted in more than fifty movies. He served as president of the Screen Actor’s Guild, won a landslide victory as governor of California, and served two terms as the president of the United States.

Ronald Reagan—nicknamed “Dutch”—was a jokester and a storyteller whose straight-talking, Midwestern style attracted the admiration of friends as well as world leaders. Ronald Reagan: From Sports to Movies to Politics will remind you why the Great Communicator became one of America’s favorite presidents.

Product Description
In 2002, shortly after I began writing for ESPN’s Page 2, we began a series of columns called “A Closer Look.” The intent was to examine some unusual aspects of sports with a very fine lens – to look at not just what was happening, but why it was happening, and how. Among the topics I chose was sports films. The idea was generally to take the best sports movies ever, to watch them closely (again and again), and to find out everything that seemed possible to know about the them. And then, of course, to deliver what I found to Page 2’s readers in the most entertaining way possible.

What I found was often astonishing, and ranged from details about how the movies were shot to which actors really “play” on film and who relied on tight choreography or body doubles. If a story was called “true,” in some form or fashion, I checked out the facts to see how true true really was. With “fictional” films, like “Bull Durham” and “Caddyshack” and “Slap Shot,” I looked into the movies’ back stories, and found, much to my surprise, that there’s a whole lot of truth to be found in these celluloid inventions.

Without giving away too much, I’ll say that what really flipped my mind, in taking this approach, was my discovery that “Caddyshack,” that great, hilarious, silly slapstick farce was, well, largely autobiographical. It’s possible that Bill Murray left more of his “real” life on the screen when he made that film than when he made any other. ... Read more

Product Description
This landmark work explores the vibrant world of football from the 1920s through the 1950s, a period in which the game became deeply embedded in American life. Though millions experienced the thrills of college and professional football firsthand during these years, many more encountered the game through their daily newspapers or the weekly Saturday Evening Post, on radio broadcasts, and in the newsreels and feature films shown at their local movie theaters. Asking what football meant to these millions who followed it either casually or passionately, Michael Oriard reconstructs a media-created world of football and explores its deep entanglements with a modernizing American society.

Football, claims Oriard, served as an agent of "Americanization" for immigrant groups but resisted attempts at true integration and racial equality, while anxieties over the domestication and affluence of middle-class American life helped pave the way for the sport's rise in popularity during the Cold War. Underlying these threads is the story of how the print and broadcast media, in ways specific to each medium, were powerful forces in constructing the football culture we know today. ... Read more

This is really a fascinating and well written book.Oriard looks at every angle in deconstructing how and why football became America's Game by 1960.Great illustrations accompany very readable text. It's a social history as much as a football history, but it speaks volumes about the sporting heritage of America and how race, class, and ethnicity are reflected in the game - and indeed how the game has forced us to confront some of the less savory facets of American society, particularly race.Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of football and American popular culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Corinne's Reveiw
Ever since I saw the movie "Dreamer" I wanted to read the book by Kathy Hapka. This is a story about a girl my age and this book is based on a true story.
Cale Crane lives with her family on a horse farm with no horses. Her dad trains racehorses. One day one of the horses has an accident on the track. Everyone thinks that they should put the horse to sleep but Cale convinces her dad to nurse it back to health. The horse's name is Sonyador, which means Dreamer in Spanish.
It takes a while but Sonya's injuries heal. Cale and her dad start training Sonya to race again. Along with her dad's friends, Balon and Mandolin, they start training Sonya.
The book has a lot of exciting race stories, twists and much more. Cale thinks Sonya can win The Breeders' Cup. Sonya has enough experience as a racehorse to qualify for consideration by the judge's panel, but Cale has to convince them to let Sonya run in the race.
The rest you have to find out on your own. There is a lot more exciting events that I haven't told you about. So to read `'Dreamer"" to find out.
On a scale of one to ten I give this book a ten. Anybody who likes animals or horses would like this story. Also if you like to laugh you would enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars MOVIE POSTER HOBBY still in its infancy
I own several movie poster books created by Bruce Hershenson, and they all are all of exceptional quality. His images of classic film posters are second to none.He always seems to find the most unique images of all our favorite films. His books cover all genres; however, SPORTS MOVIE POSTERS is, of course, my favorite.Collectors of sports autographs and other memorabilia will want to be sure to become familiar with these rare collectibles. You will be surprised to see how many sports and baseball icons like New York Yankees legends Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle have showed up in film.Be sure to check out Hershenson's other books featuring SCI FI and ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Sports Fans and Collectors
This is a terrific book filled with beautifully produced color images of hundreds of sports movie posters. It goes beyond the standard popular sports such as baseball, basketball and football. There are also sections on auto racing, soccer, tennis and much more. It covers posters from the 1910s right on through the 1990s. Most of the pictures are of one-sheets, but there are also examples of lobby cards, half-sheets, etc. Many of the posters are from movies I never even knew existed. This would make a great gift for movie poster collectors and sports memorabilia collectors alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another in a series of GREAT books
Once again, Bruce has put out another great book of poster images! The pictures are all very well done.If you collect movie posters or just like to look at great images you'll love this book.It is full of the greats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce is the finest source for movie posters anywhere
Bruce Hershenson offers yet another stunning example of movie poster art.As in all of his books, Bruce shows impeccable taste in selecting the finest sampling of Sports movie history dating back to the beginning of film spanning to current day.The only complaint with the book is that itis only 80 pages long when movie poster collectors and lovers like myselfkeep wishing for 800. ...
