4-0 out of 5 stars Great read for any sportswoman/sportsman
This book provides some great "food for thought" for practitioners of any sport, be it a team or an individual sport. You do not have to believe every word or make all the written exercises the author proposes; just read and think. At least, you will approach the "mental game" in a new way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A training and coaching gem!
Extremely helpful "how to" book for becoming mentally tough. Unlike other sports pysche books, this one tells you very specific things to do to improve concentration, focus and most important, resiliency. Think of this as a cookbook of recipes for creating the appropriate mental response at the right time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, easy read.
This is a pretty good, easy read.It doesn't hit you with a lot of scientific mumbo-jumbo that you'll never understand.Instead, it gives you a basic, common-sense approach to improving the mental aspect of your game. The author shows how the physical world and the emotional world are related, and how being stronger mentally can help you perform better in your sport.

It is not geared towards any one sport, but rather it is geared to athletes in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest book on mental preparation for sports
All I can say is that my husband a college baseball coach of 35 yrs thought this book was so important he sent it to the Cubs trainer and the pitching coach for the Padres!

1-0 out of 5 stars So-so, look at others before you buy
This book was so-so. It contained a lot of highly basic material. I was not really impressed with Dr. Loehr's theories about sport. It seemed that he did not have much access to sport himself. The examples that were given were very modest and could have used some help. I would only reccommend this book to someone who has rarely particiapted in sports...too basic for the advanced. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful trip through an amazing season
The book takes you through, in real time, the entire football year for the Giants, and some of it's not pretty. The Post's reporters and columnists are fans, but they're also honest, sometimes to the point of brutality.

It's amazing how many observations by players and coaches throughout the season have such resonance for the postseason. Fascinating stuff.

The photographs are splendid. The only thing marring this otherwise perfect book is a slew of typos. But any Giants fan will overlook this minimal flaw and just bask, especially in the last few chapters, of this account of one of the most amazing seasons in NFL history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectaular photos, excellent text- A must for Giants Fans
Kudos to the New York Post and Triumph Books for this instantly produced
book on the Giants amazing season and Super Bowl triumph.

The book is a pictorial walk through the entire season, accompanied by
insights on each game from the Post's sports writers, culminating, of course, in what must be the most exciting Superbowl ever played.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will be picking it up again and again to thumb through those photos and savor the glorious end to a remarkable
season.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for sports lovers
I was a little apprehensive buying this book because I don't know too much about the NY sports scene. I was not disappointed. I enjoyed the debate-style format between the 2 authors, who are both veteran sports writers. The book is a fantastic insight into New Yorkers and sports media psychology in general. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the phenomenon and relevance of sport in society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Damn good reading
What a tremendous read! When I was pouring over it, I felt I was sitting in a newsroom listening to two reporters go at it, New York City style!

I really recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Reading
Forget Fodor's Dining Guide, The Great NY Sports Debate is the must have book for anyone who moves to New York.Where else can you become well versed in the most talked about issues that have shaped NY culture in the last 35 years?Wife-swapping in the '70's - it's in there, Drug scandals of the '80's - it's in there, the celebrity athlete of the '90's and globalization of the '00's - check and check.

Thisbook should be handed out in the orientation packet right next to maps of the city and subway passes for any student entering NYU, Columbia, or other institutions in the city. It is a fascinating read that serves as the most entertaining text book anyone could hope to pick up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
This was a great book to read! Lennon and Rubin are both knowledgable about NYC sports from their many years covering the NY sports scene as sportswriters from their respective newspapers. Their different writing styles and opinions make for an interesting, fun read. I highly recommend this book for any sports fan... not just the NY ones. ... Read more

Book Description
The same general challenges, in varying forms, have confronted those responsible for intercollegiate sport from 1980 to the present day. Now the time has come to reexamine these problems in the light of new research (such as the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletes) and new analyses; and to review old solutions to see where they should be adapted, where maintained, and where abandoned. Part of the mission of New Game Plans is to serve as a forum for conflicting opinions on how to improve our college sports enterprise. It is not theoretical, but instead relies on the wisdom and experience of those who have had significant roles in sport to discuss how far we have come from the ideals of sport, and what we can do to correct our course. The analyses are prepared from varied perspectives by experts who offer in-depth exploration of such essential topics as the commercialization of sport; race and gender; legal issues; gambling; performance-enhancing drugs; and the academic peril faced by too many student-athletes. In a final chapter, Lapchick presents recommendations for action. New Game Plans is an essential read for governing boards, presidents, coaches, faculty, administrators, and student athletes. After a historical overview, New Game Plans is divided into sections on the issues; the influence of the media; those most involved with and those most invested in the college sports enterprise; and recommendations drawn from the authors of the respective chapters. This book covers all of the critical issues facing governing boards, presidents, coaches, administrators, and student athletes, and explores all of them in depth. ... Read more

The Best New York Sports Arguments goes to the heart of it all. Examining everything from the underestimated to the overrated, from the heroes to the goats, PeterHandrinos presents a highly original take on the greatest sports town in America.

Arguments include:
The worst team of all time: the '62 Mets or...?
Is King George a tyrant?
Namath or Messier: who made the greater "guarantee"?
Who was the bigger brat: Connors or McEnroe?

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and in-depth
This was a very easy read for me and I found it very in-depth and behind-the-scenes. Handrinos presents a lot of inside information that even the most die-hard sports fans probably don't know about. What I liked was that it was obvious that he put in a lot of extensive reseach and preperation for the book. Some of the debates are a little overboard and bloated (I really don't care about Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds' OPS+ or the 1927 Yankees Pythagorean winning percentage) but overall the book is fun and easy to read and I definitely recommend it, especially to New York sports fans.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total Peice of Literary Grabage

5-0 out of 5 stars Anindispensable resource!
"Seats", by Jode Susan Millman is an invaluable tool for anyone in the New York metropolitan area whom attends Broadway shows, concerts or sporting events. The book profiles over 150 venues, which include on and off Broadway theatres, Stadiums and all major indoor arena's.Take for example Madison Square Garden.Profiled are 4 different seating arrangements for, hockey, basketball, concerts and boxing/wrestling.They are all here and more, like famous landmarks, Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Beacon Theatre, Lincoln Center, Yankee Stadium, Giants Stadium, and even Long Island venues like the Nassau Coliseum, Jones Beach concert theatre and Westbury Music Fair[now called Northfork Theatre at Westbury].I have used this book many times over the years, and it has always served me well.If I may quote actor James Earl Jones "For culture and sports lovers, Seats is the most practical gift imaginable".I can't disagree and highly recommend this encyclopedic New York venue tour deforce which will give friends and family members many years of enjoyment and knowledge.Who says great gifts have to be expensive!

3-0 out of 5 stars All Seating Plans Should Be Readable
Some of the seating plans are not readable because the print is very small. It would have been better if larger venues were printed on two pages to be able to read the seat numbers.Otherwise it is very comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seats
Although I live in Hilton Head, S. Carolina, I'm a native New Yorker who spent many wonderful evenings at concerts and the theatre.I therefore didn't know how valuable this book would be until I planned a return visit this past month.

A family relative is performing at The Met at Lincoln Center and one of my sisters was getting the tickets. What she was told were the "best available seats" in fact weren't and she later found out from the performer that there is a "family section."I opened my copy of "Seats" and sure enough, there it was.
I also purchased tickets for "Hairspray."At $240/ticket, I was adamant that unless I got fabulous seats I wouldn't pay the price. After finding several offerings of seats that were less than great, I came upon some in the 3rd row orchestra front and center. Had I not had "Seats" I would have beem back and forth on the internet trying to find a current seating chart .
I have since bought the book for my sisters, brother and mother (great Christmas gifts).
Knowledge is power and you've got it with "Seats"! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the world of the fisherman
As one with little experience with, but a fair amount of interest in,the sea and its denizens I found thisbook an engaging and enlightening introduction to the sea and the world of the fisherman, both commercial and recreational. The author hits the salient high points of many aspects offishing: economic, biologic, philosophic and historic. I read the book while vacationing on Block Island, the scene of much of the book's action, which added to the flavor of the book. I encourage you to partake of both the book and the island.

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy intro for the uninitiated landsman
I purchased this book on the strength of a recommendation from a review in the Block Island, R.I. local paper (much of the book involves settings in the Block Island locale). As one with minimal experience with fishing and the sea, but a modest interest in both, I found the book provides a well-paced intro to all aspects of the world of the fisherman, both commercial and recreational. The author leavens the book with a number of human-interest stories, and his limited excursions into non-fishing matters (politics for example) are stimulating. ... Read more

Great information. Very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good primer.....although his "Blindfold Method" is a joke
The first three quarters of the book offer a highly entertaining and educational overview of sport betting.Moore takes the reader through all of the various types of bets and thoroughly explains how the odds fordifferent sporting events are expressed (e.g. money line, point spread, etc.)He also defines much of the lingo in sports betting and devotes anoutstanding chapter to the subject of examining (and debunking) manypopular misconceptions.

However, Moore's betting system (the"Blindfold Method"), which he uses the last quarter of the bookto unveil, is amusing at best. His theory, which suggests that bettors canexploit "soft lines" between different bookmakers, assumes thatsignificant variations in odds can be found regularly ("one or twogames per week").In practice, this does not occur. Most bookmakersare well aware of the Vegas line for all sporting events and manage theirbetting imbalances by using "lay-off" operations instead ofsimply changing their lines (a fact completely ignored in the book).Aswith all betting systems, it is worthwhile to wonder why the author iswriting about them instead of using them to make untold millions.Forthose that do put their faith in Moore's system, the "BlindfoldMethod" could not be more aptly named. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Old, Outdated and Useless
This book is part of the trio of Bob McCune's handicapping books which consist of unedited articles he's written for various gambling magazines. All three books are extremely verbose and often times off-topic ramblings which give very little helpful information in beating sports betting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Great information. Very helpful.

Best Gambling Portalhttp://www.increasedodds.com

1-0 out of 5 stars Circa 1900?
Please keep in mind this "book" is not really one per se.It is a rag-tag grouping of previously written columns by McCune and neither the book nor the columns were apparently edited as there are numerous spelling and wording errors throughout.Similar content is repeated throughout the book many times. Also the author feels the need to introduce each section with a REALLY bad poem and often goes quite off-topic in trying to establish a point related to sports betting.

This might be a decent book for somebody who is just starting out in the world of sports betting. You learn what juice is, how a local bookie might shade a hometown line etc. However all the information was written at least 10 years or more ago.As sport-betting moves into a new era, the usefulness of this dated information is questionable but it was frustrating to sit through reading.

In short, there is very little worthwhile about this book for a more advanced player with a semi-decent understanding of mathmatical probability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, It Worked for Me !!!
... I have only been a sports bettor for the past 3 months and this book has changed everything for me. I used to just look at some statistics and I thought I knew what I was doing, but my winning percentage was still hovering around .500. Now that I've read this book and learned how to bet like the pros do, my winning percentage is .765! I've also learned how to manage my money and when to bet big. This is the sports betting bible, and only those that don't know about it are probably just guessing when they bet.

I will never bet on a "hunch" ever again. This book has really opened my eyes to what is possible when betting on sports.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Bet
I took a gamble buying this book on positive feedback from others - I lost.

Lots of ryhmes, many words in CAPITALS, even a picture of the author circa 1949 but unfortunately very little useful information on how to systematically implement winning sports betting methods. ... Read more

This unique guide leads the fly-fisherman to little-known trout waters in the remote mountains and canyons of southern New Mexico. Part One reviews trout species in southern New Mexico, fishing regulations, and safety tips. All descriptions of major drainages include a chart listing the location, available maps, elevation, length, best times to fish, fish species, and fishable tributaries. A map accompanies each drainage system. The authors offer directions to the streams and lakes, describe both main stems and fishable tributaries, and offer tips on how best to fish them. An appendix describes the important aquatic insects of the Gila National Forest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Know What the Problem Is
I think this is a very good book; it's well-written, accurate (for 1995, when it was completed), and it even has a certain "literary" quality. I read the whole 200 pp. in a couple of days without "slobering" (I think this is supposed to mean slobbering, see review below) one bit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't know what all of the hype is!
I don't know if it was because the author himself really thought this was a good book, or if it was because I had other things on my mind while reading it. Rex Johnson is a fair writer, and does provide interesting information at times. However, I found myself falling asleep, slobering while I was reading it. I guess fly fishing is not for me! Illustrations in the book are up to par. If you like fly fishing, maybe, borrow it before you think about buying it. Really!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine Gila Wilderness Primer
The kind of "excellence" described in the author's (excellent) introduction pervades this detailed guide.Historical anecdote is meticulously intertwined with drily philosophical musings on the uneasy relationship between cow, cowboy and trout.Tips for fly types and sizes, line weights, rod lengths and other technicia may seem somewhat cursory,as the author's great affinity is not for technique and equipment but for the wild trout he has caught here. There is a certain "reading between the lines," necessary to get full benefit from this book -- in this way it can be as rewarding (or frustrating) as what is sometimes called literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hidden world in the Gila
This book is simply the best available for southern New Mexico, and one of the bext of its type. Very comprehensive. It's clear thatthe author has actually been to and caught fish atthe many remote spots he describes, over a period of many years. If you are even thinking of visiting the remote mountains of southern New Mexico, this is for your bookshelf

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for a beautiful area.
I have been a fly fisherman from time to time over the last ten years or so, and I lived in the Southwest from 1977 until 1998. My family returnedto the area for a vacation and re-visited the Gila National Forest last summer, equipped with a lot of fishing gear and Rex's book. FFSNM seemed tobring the Gila's trout streams to life. This book is a kind of"sleeper'. Not many people have read it, but it's a good example ofquality outdoing quantity. A lot of really good things in this world, likethis book, remain overlooked, but that's probably fortunate in this case, because, like Rex Johnson, Jr., I liked having the Gila all to myself. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The New York Times tells the story of the New York Yankees
A transient American League franchise was plunked down in New York in early 1903, which made last year the 100th anniversary of the team now known as the New York Yankees. As part of the celebration five writers from the sports department of "The New York Times" put together "The New York Yankees Illustrated History."Actually this volume has less photographs than I would have thought, given the title, although most Yankee fans will find enough new shots to justify flipping through the pages, including, believe it or not, a photograph of Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson joking about their infamous "lifestyle" swap.

The volume divides the history of the Yankees into five eras, each of which is defined by decades: (1) The Ruth Years (1903-1929), covered by George Vecsey, covers the most of the first three decades of the team, although Ruth was with the team from 1921 to 1935.This opening chapter sets up the first Yankee dynasty, with black & white photographs focusing on Ruth and the 1927 "Murder's Row" team as well as a collection of Yankee memorabilia by a long-time fan.My favorite shots are of Ruth in 1921, when he was in his physical prime, and Gehrig sitting on the dugout steps watching the team after he benches himselfin 1939.(2) Gehrig-DiMaggio (1930s, 40s, 50s), written by Dave Anderson, really focuses primarily on the DiMaggio period, with the Iron Horse as the link between the Babe and Joltin' Joe.Again, the chronology does not quite fit because DiMaggio retired after 1951, but he is the dominant figure in this chapter, which has photographs of his personal life as well as his playing career.

When you see that the next chapter focuses on the 1960s, and who it focuses on, it becomes clear that the major figure who does not get to be worked into a title and who clearly defined the 1950s for the Yankees, was Yogi Berra.Instead, we have (3) Mantle, Maris and the 1960s, by Robert Lipsyte, which elevates Roger Maris and his 61* home runs to the same level of Mantle, DiMaggio, Gehrig and Ruth.I really think they are off base here, that the 1950s and 1960s should have been Yogi and Mickey. After all, it is still Yogi, the most beloved living baseball player, who is the only one in history with 10 World Series rings. This chapter has a rare color photograph of a 19 year old Mantle as well as a shot of Mantle and teammate Clip Mapes visiting Mickey's father at a Oklahoma mine, as well as the pivotal moment in the 1951 World Series when Mantle caught his spikes on a drain hole and popped his knee as DiMaggio catches the ball hit by Willie Mays.

For most Yankee fans the last two chapters deal with the New York Yankees they have probably known most of their lives: (4) Life With Steinbrenners (1970s, 80s), by Murray Chass, reminds everybody that you could have Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Billy Martin, Ron Guidry, Goose Gossage and whoever you wanted on the field, but the Yankees were dominated by the personality of the Boss.(5) The Modern Yankees, by Buster Olney, looks at how the dynasty that started dominating baseball at the end of the 1990s was put together, ending, ironically, with the Yankees losing the 2001 World Series in the bottom of the 9th inning of Game 7 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.Which meant the Yankees had only won four World Championships in the last six seasons. They are photographs of most of the key players associated with the new Yankee dynasty.

The 150 photographs in "The New York Yankees Illustrated History" come from the library of the Baseball Hall of Fame and extensive archives of "The New York Times."Interestingly enough, only the photographs in the last chapter are color shots. The text provides not so much a history of a franchise as the stories of the legendary players and great games. The writing here is certainly in the tradition of sports reporting more than history, which is quite appropriate for a richly illustrated volume. This is not a definitive history, nor is it the final word on a pictorial history of the team, but it is certainly strong enough in both departments to be worth a look by Yankee fans. ...
