Product Description

Inside the Sports Pages explores the working world of contemporary sports journalism through the eyes of the reporters, editors, athletes and media-relations people who inhabit it.

In this first comprehensive study of the work routines and professional ideologies involved in the manufacture of sports news, Mark Douglas Lowes presents a detailed and richly textured ethnographic account of life on the sports desk at a major Canadian daily newspaper. His wide-ranging analysis considers the role of the 'audience commodity' in sports news production, the dynamics of the newsroom, and the complex relations between reporters and their routine sources on the sports beat. The book concludes with an assessment of the ideological nature of sports news, and argues that sports coverage functions primarily as a promotional vehicle for the North American 'major league' sports industry. It will be of interest to anyone concerned about how the media report sports news- and the way they leave some of it unreported. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful reference for news/sports professionals
I found this an excellent reference book - it's designed for news and sports editors moving to Final Cut and is very effectively focused on the features especially important to this use. It's a step-by-step tutorial, which is best suited to this task. There is such a wide range of configurability and an exceptional range of sophisticated editing and effects power in FCP - it can be a learning challenge for those who've spent years in other editors. This book is an excellent resource for news and sports editors making the transition.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a Pamphlet - Just So You Know
This is meant to be kept in one's purse or jacket pocket for on the fly reference. For the price, I would not purchase this item. It does not come with any additional DVD and the material within is FCP 101. Which is fine for those that need it, but for the price, you're better off getting the full-sized Training Series book, or "The Craft of Editing" also by Apple. ... Read more

Product Description
The signs of the sports apocalypse are everywhere: Terrell Owens roams our streets a free man, the U.S. Congress is sampling sluggers’ urine tests; and worst of all, Americans are starting to take bicycle racing and soccer seriously. So who dares to step into the breach that separates sport from madness? The intrepid news team of The Brushback, the Internet’s most trusted and honored sports journal.*

For intelligent fans (and by that, we mean those who read books–or at least the back covers) who are fed up with end-zone celebrations, inane sportscasters, luxury boxes, and eleven-dollar bleacher dogs, The Brushback Report will be chin-music to your ears. So put down the remote, Sparky, and pick up this book to get the real stories behind the hottest news headlines of our times:

“Nation’s Jobless Receive Emergency Airlift of Madden 2006”
“WNBA Players Give Up Trying to Be Sexy”
“Hockey Surpassed in Popularity by Air Hockey”
“New Girlfriend Weirded Out by Derek Jeter Fanpage”
“Team with Lots of Heart Beaten by Team with Lots of Money”

There’s no sporting cliché too trite and no inspiring story too corny to lampoon. From team owners on down to the guy who pirates Wrestlemania off cable TV, nothing or no one is spared the Brushback treatment. Hilarious and defiantly politically incorrect, The Brushback Report gives us the world of sports in all its demented glory.

* Not really. We’re just pumping up our stats before the start of contract renegotiations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny
For anyone who hasn't visited [...] this book is an excellent introduction.Even though it's a rather thin book I found it worked best for me when I read only two or three entries at a time.A lot of the humor would be lost if one tried to go through it in one sitting. All in all a very light enjoyable read.Highly reccomend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for sports fans
You don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy this book. It does help if you read newspapers or magazines, watch television news, or work with people who actually talk about sports and use lame sports metaphors in meetings you are forced to attend. It's pretty hard not to have heard of most of the sports and some of the people who perpetrate them. I say all this because I once tried to encourage a friend to watch a show called, "Home Improvement." She refused for 2 years because she thought it was about tools. This is not a "Sports Report" any more than Tim Taylor and "Tool Time" were really about improving the home.

My favorite headlines from the Brushback report include:

FEMA Mistakenly Descends on Miami Hurricanes Game
Hunter Proud of Outsmarting Elk
Stoned Person Finds Himself Watching Figure Skating
NFL Collapses After Nation Gets Its Priorities Straight
Free Agent Narrows Choices Down to Whichever Team Has the Most Money
Referee Forced to Sit Through Fox Promos Before Viewing Replay

The book is excellent throughout. If one thing doesn't amuse, there's another less than an inch away. The website is consistently hilarious. I'd give it 5 stars if Amazon would let me correct my error in clicking on four. It's a 5. Really.

5-0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!
My favorite headlines from this book: BLACK NASCAR DRIVER PULLED OVER DURING RACE and HOCKEY SURPASSED IN POPULARITY BY AIR HOCKEY.

I'd recommend this book to you if 1) You stay up to watch the 2:30 a.m. edition of Sportscenter even though it's a repeat of the one you saw at 10. 2) You love your Playstation more than your girlfriend 3) You love the Onion and the Onion compilations.

This is a witty, irreverent book of satire that may occasionally cut a bit close to the bone for the more sensitive among us. But then, they won't be reading it in the first place. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read but used to be Five Stars
Every year this book loses more and more of it's edge. It's good at saying what a player does well but is overly gentle about what a player does not.Back in the late 80's the book was brutally honest (if you get a chance read Ray Knight in the '86 book ... the year he won the World Series MVP).Now that was entertaining.Sure they were wrong on occasion but they had the guts to tell it like they thought. They've lost that now.Take a look at the "other players" grades.Over 90% are C's.What's the point. That said ... I'll still get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep it close for games on TV.
A terrific book that exposes the strengths and weaknesses of every Major League Baseball player and some of the up and coming stars who are close to reaching the "show". Follow every players at bats and pitching outings with this great scouting book that pulls no punches when analysing the players. A book I can't put down, every Baseball fan should have a copy in their library.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential purchase for any baseball fan
Along with Baseball Prospectus and the Bill James annual, this is a book that should be on every fan's coffee table throughout the baseball season.Full of detailed scouting analysis on hundreds of major leaguers, it complements the statistical annuals perfectly, helping to provide a complete picture of each player.

There are 22 players listed for each team, with 12 getting full pages and the others shown with 2 on a page. Each player's vitals are included on their page, along with situational stats. For batters, a diagram is included to show hitting tendencies, while pitchers are given a pitching profile showing a further breakdown of their performance versus the league average. The player evaluations are divided into 4 categories - a recap of their 2004 season, pitching or hitting depending on their position, defense, and a 2005 outlook. For the players who have to share a page, the hitting/pitching is cominbed with the defense.Managers and stadiums are also given individual pages, and the park factors and managerial tendencies are useful.

Since more than 22 players contribute to any team, each franchise is also given a couple of pages devoted to "Other" players, whose stats and evaluation are presented in a succinct, boxscore-type format. Each team also has a section where several of their top minor league prospects are evaluated. This number is limited, since the book's main focus is on players expected to contribute to the big team in the upcoming season.

The only complaints I have about this book are minor. One is that the stats in the back of the book list batting average first among stats for hitters.I think even non-stat junkies now accept the fact that OBP or OPS are better measuring sticks for hitters, so I think it would make more sense to list one of those ahead of average. However, that's truly a minor issue. The focus of this book is scouting, and that's something it presents beautifully.

This is one I look forward to every year, and the 2005 edition does not disappoint. This is one to keep by your side during the baseball season, as it should prove both informative and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baseball book with a scouting prospective
To all you Baseball Prospectus diehards, your 2005 collection is not complete without this book. This book provides traditional scouting methods that you won't find in any other publication. If you want to know the assortment of pitchers a hurler throws, you can find it in this book. The best part of about this scouting guide is the detail description of players' tendencies and skills. The book also goes into detail about the 30 ballparks around the league and provides a one page report about the tendencies and stategies of all big league managers. While I love to read the performance based analysis of Baseball Prospectus, I think that book has failed to capture the total picture of ballplayers in its publication and I use the Scouting Notebook to get both sides of the story.Remember, a successful baseball team needs both a blend of brilliant sabermetric and scouting analysis to be successful.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one...
If you only buy one baseball annual in 2005, this should be the one!The Scouting notebook effectively humanizes the players to such a degree I felt like I could manage them to a pennant. The writing style is crisp, and clean, easy to understand without becoming boringly predictable. This book makes for a fun companion for the 2005 season. ... Read more

From its exclusive archives, The Sporting News recreates a century of baseball's moderan era, from 1901 through 2000.

Baseball is a look at baseball history and how The Sporting News-–the Bible of Baseball-–covered the legendary players and events, from Babe Ruth and his 1927 season to Mark McGwire and his 1998 season. From Lou Gehrig's farewell address at Yankee Stadium, to Cal Ripken's Iron Man--breaking celebration at Camden Yards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book from the best in sports!
From the late stage of the 19th century, the sporting news has been the bible of baseball, it has covered every aspect of the americas pasttime, from little Eddie Gaedel to the big bats of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, the book is one of the best or perhaps the best on the market covering the illustrated story of the sport. Join TSN from the mere start of the american league, via the upstart federal league, and to modern times of interleague play. Join TSN through wars, depression and a bunch of presidents. Over the years TSN has influenced baseball, for example by the save and relief pitchers. The book contains articles from the times when the events happened plus some text from today. As a regular subscriber, I am proud to have this book in my collection. There is some other stories that have been closed out, but nevertheless this book is given a perfect 10. It makes a hell of a birthday or christmas gift to anyone between 10-100 who loves baseball.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This book chronicles the history of baseball in the 20th century as seen through the momentous archives of The Sporting news, the baseball weekly that has seemingly been around almost since the beginning of professional baseball. Numerous photos, cartoons, articles, and features detail the sport's history, from the beginning of the American League in 1901, the 1914 "Miracle Braves," the Black Sox Scandal, both World Wars, the Babe, the "Iron Horse", Ted, Joltin Joe, Jackie Robinson, and too many other ballplayers to mention, the "Television Age" and the beginning of several major league team moves and expansion, thru to events of the 1990s, inlcuding Cal Ripken's breaking of Lou Gehrig's consecutive games streak and Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa's home run "duel" in 1998, to the 2000 "Subway series."

I can't think of anyone better to take on a project like this and publish a book that covers the last century of baseball so well. ... Read more
