Amazon.com Review
Start sharpening your debating chops. Any list that tries torank the best who ever played the game in numerical order is justbegging for a fight, and this coffee-table-sized offering virtuallydares you to take a whack at its chin. The fun part about it is thatit's intriguing enough, surprising enough, and persuasive enough tohold its own.

Pretty much everyone agrees that the Bambino'sNo. 1--and Smith doesn't topple over any ledges disputing that--butfrom No. 2 on, he gets interesting. He slots Willie Mays into theplace position, and rounds out the top 10 with Ty Cobb, WalterJohnson, Hank Aaron, Lou Gehrig, Christy Mathewson, Ted Williams,Rogers Hornsby, and Stan Musial. Joe DiMaggio hovers at No. 11, and300-game-winner Early Wynn is the list's closer. Several Negro Leaguestars make it despite never getting a chance to play in the show, andof those still in uniform, only Tony Gwynn, Greg Maddux, and BarryBonds crack the top 50; Mark McGwire (91) and Ken Griffey, Jr. (93)seem like comparative clubhouse stragglers.

Each of the 100players is extolled with a full-page photo and facing-page text thatserves up a quick tour of his career and accomplishments. Individualstats are collected and relegated to the end of the volume, but lotsof fascinating numbers are woven throughout. There are also a bunch oftop 10 lists offered up by players (some of whom are among the "100Greatest") and managers that cry out to be challenged, making this onebaseball book that can supply your mind and your lungs with an equallyvigorous workout. --Jeff Silverman ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Flawed But Entertaining
As national sports publications go, The Sporting News tends towards the low-brow; this can be charted both with the increase in recent years of NASCAR-coverage and by the quality of the copy itself--certainly not in the same class as Sports Illustrated, which, for all its faults, boasts the cream of the crop in terms of sheer sports journalism.
Thankfully, the book is not marred too noticeably by the usual TSN writing style; namely terse, fumbling little capsules that adhere strictly to certain familiar narrative arcs. The same cannot be said for the opinions therein, which are often almost painfully wrong-minded or dependent on faulty logic. It becomes clear that this volume was meant more as a stately coffee table book than a Bill James-style journey into the jungle of stats and lore to determine the pecking order of the great game.
I am a maniacal fan, to put it kindly, and one that must analyze history for its own sake. This book is intended for a fan of a slightly lesser level of obsession, which is not to say that it cannot be recommended heartily for most.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baseball's 100 Greatest Players
Baseball is my favorite sport, and I love debating the greatest players of all time just like everyone else. And The Sporting News does a solid job of ranking the players, and offering why.The pictures are a wonderful addition to the text. And while they overvalue players like Rogers Hornsby and Pete Rose and undervalue players like Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, and Stan Musial, the idea of the book like this is to provoke arguments.Foolishy, they did not separate pitchers and position players, and I wish they would have written a little bit more about each player, but overall this is a great book. One final note: For the most part I believe that baseball's greatest players came from the bygone days, but Cal Ripken's 78 ranking in this book is an absolute travesty. He is a top 30 player.Overall, a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sporting News Selects Baseball's Greatest Players
GREAT BOOK, GIVEN AS A GIFT AND HE LOVED IT.READS IT AVIDLY EVERYDAY.WIFE TOLD ME HE ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT.I AM SURE ITWILL BE LOVED BY THE AVID BASEBALLL FAN.MAKES A GREAT GIFT OR IF YOU ARE JUST BUYING IT FOR YOURSELF ENJOY EVERY PICTURE AND LINE YOU READ.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scores a Home Run With These Pics!
Like their pro football book, this book selects what The Sporting News' editors felt who were the greatest 100 baseball players of all time. And it's very difficult to argue too hard with their choices. Babe Ruth at #1 is in my opinion a no-brainer. Ruth really saved the game at a time when it desperately needed a hero and he forever changed the way the game was played with his towering home runs on the field and his "carousing" off it. The book also features a nicely written foreword by the #2 all-time best player, Willie Mays. How honored I am that I got to see him play in his prime some 30 plus years ago as a boy.

I like that the choices in this book are unaffected by race, scandal or personality. Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Buck Leonard, Cool Papa Bell, and Oscar Charleston of the Negro League made this list. It's truly sad that so many talented ballplayers were kept out of the majors because of their race. Joe Jackson, is another "Top 100 member" who of course was banned after the Black Sox scandal. Others like Ty Cobb, who was a notorious hothead in his day are also here.

Reading through the book brought many smiles to my face as I recalled watching so many players, like Harmon Killebrew, Kirby Puckett, Willie McCovey (my all-time favorite), Ernie Banks, and Hank Aaaron just to name a few.

So many excellent choices, this book is well-done and a great momento to all the athletes who have made baseball the game it is today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A baseball collector's keepsake!
My favorite sports is baseball, so reviewing this book was an easy choice. As with all books that rank the best of all time, the listing are subjective, although this list is very close to my personal choices.Sporting News is a respected name and that adds credibility to thebook.

Starting with Babe Ruth, as most baseball ranking do, right tonumber 100 Early Wynn, there are stories, photos and quotes that make thisbook one the best. I was impressed by the vast collection of picturesthroughout the book.

The book has a top 100 timeline of players, the AllTime top 10 selections lists, all decade teams, top100 breakdowns and a top100 quiz included in the book as well. For every baseball fan and purest, this would make the prefect gift or collectors item.

A great addition tomy library, a book that I will share with my children for years to come,Baseball's 100 Greatest Players needs only to add a video to make the setcomplete! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Power is Forever
Baseball is in the midst of an all out power hitting surge with more home runs being hit than ever before, and this new book by the Sporting Newsis perfectly timed to take advantage of our current facination with the longball. This book is also one that the generations can enjoy together.. Myson is always asking me,"who was better, Babe Ruth or MarkMcwire?" Was Sammy Sosa better than Hank Aaron?" Well, the beautyof this book is that it places all the important sluggers throughoutbaseball history in context so that kids of all ages can read and arguetheir case. I particularily enjoyed the qoutes from each slugger'scontemporaries about an aspect of their personna. The graphics areeye-catching and modern enough to grab the attention of today's visuallysopisticated youth. This is particularly important in giving the old-timeplayers a modern context and perception. The novelist, Bernard Malamud (TheNatural) once wrote,"baseball history has the quality ofmythology." This book brings that qoute to life full-force by linkingthese epic slugging heroes together in an historical weave that trulycaptures the larger-than-life feats and personalities of characters like;Babe Ruth, "the Sultan of Swat", Hammerin' Hank Aaron."Double XX" Jimmy Foxx, and "Hondo" Frank Howard, considered by some to be the strongest man ever to wear a uniform. I lovedsharing the book with my friends and children. It truly is a book for theages.

3-0 out of 5 stars nice pictures, a bit short on text
The book is really two books: the evolution of the hitter era by era, which was pretty informative, and the pictorial spreads: a two-page spread for each spread composed from a number of both still-life and in-actionphotos. The spreads are dotted with some cool quotes and factoids (thequote for Maris was one of my faves).

Personally, I would have preferreda more traditional format: more text and the pictures presentedindividually instead of as a composite, but I also think this would make agreat gift for a baseball fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Baseball Best
I found this book very insightful and informative. In my opinion, every baseball fan should own this title since it profiles the careers of old greats such as Mickey Mantle all the way up to the present career of BigMac.The book could use a little more information on each slugger but thecursory player review is understandable since it covers fifty sluggers. The book appeals to the American obsession with the long ball and caters topeople's interests. The Sporting News should be commended for its topnotch publication on the subject. Bottom Line: This book is a must for anyreal baseball fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're not a Stevie Y fan, this book will make you one.
I highly reccomend this book to any fan of the Red Wings and their Captain. Some parts will make you smile while other parts will make you teary-eyed, but all of it will make you very proud to be a Red Wings fan. And if you're not already a fan, this book just might make you into one. If you think all modern athletes are selfish and just in it for the money, this book will show you that there are still exceptions.Unfortunately, itwas published before the Wings won their latest Cups, so you can't readabout that in here, but that just makes you realize how special it is towin the Cup.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve Yzerman is the GREATEST hockey player of all times!
When I got the book the first night I could not put it down.To see what he has gone through in his carree, that was amazing. He is the greatest hockey player who ever lived, and now because of the chapionships that theteam has won under his leadership, other are now FINALLY realizing it.Hehas done everything for this team and city, he has given us his heart, andin return we give him ours.He has captured our hearts and through thisboook you can get an indepth look at the making of a SUPERSTAR!

5-0 out of 5 stars Will bring tears to your eyes
I know this is so sappy, but I think the book is so sweet! I've read it many times since I bought it and it brings tears to my eyes to read the heartbreak Stevie Y suffered b/c he couldn't get achieve his goal ofhoisting the Cup.

It's a MUST have for all true Steve Yzerman fans andhas some really nice pictures in it. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved It
i think this book is the best. Stevie finally got what he deserved. 2 stanley cup rings, a book and now he need to get into the hall of fame!

Steve Rulz and "Believe"

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!
This book is great! Steve Yzerman has been the heart and soul of the Detroit Red Wings for so long. It's nice to finally get the chance to learn all about him. Some of us were just 9 years old when he came to the Wings and don't remember how small, akward, and young he was. Also, great pictures! But, one warning, the book was written before the 96-97 season so you won't see a Stanley Cup chapter in it and you'll hear lots of mentions of how Stevie still hasn't raised the chalice. ... Product Description
In the days before television, radio was the constant voice in American life. When radio spoke, America listened-especially to the men and women who spoke directly to their unseen audience. Sometimes formal, sometimes as familiar as the friend next door, their presence filled the airwaves: announcers, newscasters, sportscasters, showbiz reporters, advice consultants, emcees and breakfast chatterboxes. These radio personalities became as popular and familiar as the most public faces of the time. Here among profiles of more than 1100 "radio speakers" are famous names like George Ansbro, Red Barber, H.V. Kaltenborn, Dorothy Kilgallen, Edward R. Murrow, Louella Parsons, Walter Winchell and more. Also amply represented are hundreds of lesser known individuals who left indelible auditory impressions. Whether their fame was forever or fleeting, all were a part of the American voice during the grand epoch of network radio. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Who came up with the subtitle?
John Dunning, Martin Grams and Jim Cox are my three favorite authors. Every book that bears their name sits on my shelf. This is more reference than pleasure reading. Each entry features the name of the radio speaker/announcer, birth date, date of death, name of program and years they served duty, and whenever possible a bit of biography and background.

Durward Kirby, for example, cites his work on HOP HAZARD, CRIME FIGHTERS, CRISCO RADIO NEWSPAPER, THE GARRY MOORE SHOW, HILLTOP HOUSE, TWO FOR THE MONEY and others. What launched his radio career, he was 6 foot 4, blond hair, and a quote by Garry Moore about Durward is included among other trivia.

360 pages, fully indexed. Only flaw is the subtitle. The subtitle is supposed to explain that the approach for which the book extends profile. I cannot visualize someone typing "verbalized the Jargon" in a google search to find this book. Perhaps the publishers were having a little fun?

5-0 out of 5 stars People Behind The Microphones
They were some of the most familiar voices during the Golden Age of Radio and beyond, but, in many cases, were also some of the most anonymous. They were the announcers, news and entertainment reporters, sportscasters, show hosts, and others or as author Jim Cox refers to them, the "Radio Speakers."

In his new book of the same title, Jim provides Old-Time Radio fans with a wonderful new resource. He has compiled an extensive body of information on an important segment of Golden Age ofRadio talent; a segment that has received relatively little coverage in Old-Time Radio literature. The reader will find that much new enlightening and fascinating information has been included in this volume.

The work is truly extensive and includes profiles of 1,161 "Radio Speakers."The main portion of the book, The Dictionary, supplies detailed biographical sketches of some 569 "Speakers" These entries include birth and These entries include birth and death information, series worked, personal and career information, and numerous entertaining anecdotes. In the Appendix, there are very brief entries for another 592 network and syndicated radio personalities for whom little information exists on their careers and/or their performances on radio were relatively minor compared to their other activities in various other entertainment venues.

With the publication ofRadio Speakers, Jim Cox has greatly expanded the body of knowledge on an important group ofpeople who made vital contributions to Radio's Golden Age. This book is a significant reference work that should find its way in the libraries of scholars and fans of Old-Time Radio. ... Read more

Product Description
When Tim Mara paid $500 in 1925 for New York's firstprofessional football franchise, and named the team after the city'sbeloved baseball Giants, he could hardly have imagined that the end ofthe century would see his team replace the baseball nine as New York'sfavorite Giants.

Over the past 75 years, few teams in all of professional football havematched the celebrated history of the New York Giants. The Giantshave played in more NFL championship games than any other franchise, winning titles in 1927, 1934, 1938, and the 1987 and 1991 Super Bowls;have finished first in their division more often (19 seasons) than anyother NFL team; and are second only to the Chicago Bears in the numberof regular season games won (531) since 1925.

Along with these victories, Giant fans have seen some of the greatestplayers ever suit up for a football game. From Jim Thorpe's brief,three-game career with New York in the inaugural 1925 season toAll-Century players Mel Hein of the 1930s, Roosevelt Brown of the1950s, and Lawrence Taylor of the 1980s, the Giants have placed nearlytwo dozen players, coaches, and owners in the Pro Football Hall ofFame.

Great names like Tim and Wellington Mara, Steve Owen, Tuffy Leemans,Kyle Rote, Frank Gifford, Charlie Conerly, Emlen Tunnell, AndyRobustelli, Sam Huff, Alex Webster, Y.A. Tittle, Fran Tarkenton, RonJohnson, Phil Simms, Bill Parcells, Carl Banks, Joe Morris, RodneyHampton, and Michael Strahan dot the Giant landscape and dominate theNFL history books.

Through all of this, New Yorkers have seen more glorious thrills, exciting spills, and notorious chills than any other fans in the NFL.The famous "sneakers game".The Greatest Game Ever Played.Y.A. With dignity and class, Cal has played on, and on, and on, eclipsing Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games in 1995. Product Description
For all Americans, the 20th century was a phenomenal age in which to live. Through war and peace, hard times and good times, the journey toward the year 2000 was at times rocky, but always fascinating.

Indiana can be proud of the role it played in making America what it is today - the Hoosier state turned out legendary musicians, daring space explorers and sports superstars. The continual surge to explore new vistas of the imagination and human achievement led to incredible advancements - in technology, medicine, and human relationships.

The century, ushered in by horse and buggy, exists at supersonic speed. Indiana's daily newspapers have served as the chroniclers of ongoing history. The vast array of images from The Indianapolis Star and The Indianapolis News printed within this volume produces a grand portrait of a people and the land they inhabit - a marvelous mosaic of life in Indiana in the 20th century.

Geographically and culturally, Indiana is in the midst of America's heartland. It's a land of middle-class values and laborers with a strong work ethic. The land itself is a geographic mix of farmland and criss-crossing interstate highways. Communities vary in size from tiny villages to Indianapolis, a bustling city that burst from its cocoon into national prominence.

The collection of images in Hoosier Century celebrates both the ordinary and the extraordinary people and events that touched the lives of Hoosiers throughout the 1900s. The more than 370 images in this book vary strikingly - from pastoral countryside settings to breaking news events that grabbed national headlines.

Newspaper photographers early in the century had primitive equipment with which to work - unlike today's photojournalists, who are equipped with the latest in technological wizardry. Despite these differences, newspaper photographers spanning the years between 1899 and 2000 had one thing in common - the ability to transport readers to places they might not ordinarily go and to see things they would not ordinarliy see.

Beautiful scenics, humerous moments and fascinating historic photos from the early years of auto racing are just some of the photographic treasures that delight even casual observers of the human condition. The visual treasury recording the life and times of Hoosiers in the 1900s will become a valued keepsake for future generations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A real good read.
Laced with tradition, Indiana is a state that has given this country some of its most exciting moments to remember. From the Indianapolis 500 to Hoosier basketball tradition to Larry Bird.

As we close this century wecan look back with pride in all of the accomplishments this country and itspeople have given. Hoosier Country has captured this reviewer with some ofthe most amazing photos.

Unlike most books that look back on the past 100years, Hoosier Country is not a story, but rather a grouping of photos withbrief but detailed explanations of the meaning.

The book is a truetestament to the people of Indiana. I think that every state should investin a book that shows as pride for the state as this book, and then you'llhave a true collector series for years to come. ... Read more

Produced by The Sporting News, The Official MajorLeague Baseball Fact Book is a treasure trove for baseballfans. Compiling a rather stunning amount of information, it provides adetailed review of the most recent season, a preview of the current season, profiles of current and former baseball stars, a season-by-seasonreview from 1876 to the present, and a section on all-time leaders in variousstatistical categories. As an example of the book's comprehensiveness,on the page about the Detroit Tigers you'll find the teamroster; the season schedule; lists of coaches, scouts, trainers, andphysicians; the field dimensions of Comerica Park; ticket information;the director of merchandising, for crying out loud--and a lotmore. There's also a complete list of recent transactions, an exhaustivecatalog of Hall of Famers, franchise histories, and box scores frommemorial games (one of the best parts of the book). Great stuff, andit includes lots of photos. --Andy Boynton ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Facts Need Checking
I have enjoyed previous issues of this book but I bought the current one expecting, as a Red Sox fan, the descriptions of the scoring of the playoff games and the play by play of the World Series. Unfortunately many innings were missing and the scores were not always accurate.
The descriptions of the batting leaders for 2004 were also mistitled. It is too bad that an otherwise valuable record book was issued too hastily without checking the facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistics repository for the 2003 season, a great resource!
Now that the 2004 season is basically over, this book will be outdated very quickly, but look for future versions! I remember picking a copy up in the bookstore for the first time and being simply amazed by how much information was contained within its pages!

The Official MLB Fact Book (2004 Edition) includes an overwhelming supply of individual and team stats for the 2003 stats, plus postseason box scores, and list after list of baseball greats including award winners, league leaders, record holders, and hall of famers.

I used to rely only on each yearly edition of The Sporting News Record Book for updated statistics, but beginning with 2004, I may have found a better alternative.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Baseball Almanac Source
Our inspiration for Baseball Almanac ... began with The Baseball Encyclopedia. Our source for the team by team section was inspired by this one book which we have purchased every year since 1999 and STILL keep on our shelf side-by-side. Three stars because there are a few historical errors (-1 star), all of which I've written to them about, and not enough data for the average fan (-1 star). Though only a "fact book", it leaves you wanting more... ... Read more
