Product Description
This edition by Packianathan Chelladurai, one of the preeminent scholars in the field of sport management, presents a clear and concise treatment of managing organizations in sport and physical activity. The four functions of management--planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating--provide the book's general framework. This framework, used in the majority of texts written for business students, represents the simplest and best approach for introducing students to the intricacies of management. For each function, Chelladurai presents relevant theories and their practical applications to the actions of sport and physical activity managers, citing those theoretical models that are most appropriate to the unique aspects of the sports industry. He uses the open systems perspective, placing organizations in the context of their environment and emphasizing the manager's role in adapting and reacting to changes in that environment. To apply theory to sport management practices, Chelladurai provides numerous examples from the fields of physical activity and sports, including professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, health and sports clubs, and nonprofit sports/fitness programs. New to the third edition is a chapter on staffing, which looks at matching people with jobs through recruiting and hiring, and discusses the processes of training and mentoring. This edition also contains new industry examples and current issues presented in sidebars throughout the book.Additional highlights of the text include outstanding chapters on leadership by one of the preeminent researchers and scholars in this area; the presentation of the athletic team as an organization, which allows students to grasp organizational theory and relate it to a familiar context; the open systems perspective, which places organizations in the context of their environment and emphasizes the manager's role in adapting and reacting to changes in the environment; and numerous pedagogical aids such as thought-provoking questions, lists of key points and key terms, short summaries of the most important points in a section to help crystallize concepts, and extensive references. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
This text covers all the basic theory in sport management in an easy to follow manner. The questions at the end of each chapter help make the material relevant and practical to students. The sidebars and recap sections help students understand how material in one chapter builds from another. This is important since the book is about the systems perspective of organizations. While it offers more developed views of organizations and leadership in small sections, the basic content of the book makes it well suited to undergraduate or graduate courses in which students have had very little management coursework. As a text that lays the foundation for more advanced study of management and leadership, it is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent source for Sport Management
It is an excellent source for sport management. It is another book of Chella that explores the fundamental knowledge and important issues for sport management but in a very update edition and approach. ... Read more

The aphorism says: 'A picture speaks thousand words', therefore studying the symbolism of armed organisations can throw light on the ideology of armed organisations as well as make the political course and fighting tactics more evident. This book is a guide to the symbolism of armed non-governmental organisations, including terrorists, partisans, separatists, self-defence squads, militias, armed sects, umbrella organisations and also political parties and movements closely tied to armed organisations. The book contains a total of 400 organisations from 90 countries and almost 800 symbols. There are symbols of organisations from a hundred years ago, as well as modern ones. The knowledge of symbolism will allow quick and easy identification of propagandist and program materials of different weaponed movements. Product Description
Does the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) exploit student athletes? Should athletes be paid? Does Title IX unfairly discriminate against men's sports? Are the salaries of head coaches excessive? Why is there so much cheating in college sports? Should the sports department be subsidized by the university? Why do universities place so much emphasis on athletics?

The above are just some of the questions raised in this sports economics textbook specially designed to teach undergraduate students about the college sports industry. The book focuses on the unique cartel structure of the NCAA and its member institutions to shed light on the labor market for college athletes and coaches; the tension between athletics and academics; the finance of athletic departments; the role of the media and commercialization of college sports; race, gender, and legal issues; and the desirability and plausibility of reform.

The book reinforces the economic analysis with a variety of examples of recent events and can be used as either a primary or secondary text.

Contents:

  • The History of Intercollegiate Athletics and the NCAA;
  • Cartels in College Sports;
  • The Labor Market for College Athletes;

This encyclopedia is a great resource for those wishing to learn more about the history of the disability sport movement. Research shows that little has been written about disability sports and the people, events and organizations that created the movement. Sports and physical activity transcend many barriers—thus, a book about disability sport and the people and events involved is likely to eradicate some of the barriers people with disabilities themselves face, by creating a greater awareness and understanding of the abilities of people with disabilities.
