Book was in great condition and saved me $$$$.I bought it at the univeristy book store and paid about 40 $ more.Fast delivery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book was required for my introduction to sport management classes. JB Parks and J. Quarterman did a fantastic job at putting this introductory book together. Whats even better is that my professor for this class was JB Parks herself, in her final year before retiring from Bowling Green State University. She is a wonderful professor and very smart in the field of sports management. I would suggest this book for any sports management major, professor, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars overpriced
There just was not that much info for a 116 page book priced at over $30.

There is more written about how to use their paid subscription website than the ABC's of sports betting and handicapping. If you are looking for info on putting together a handicapping system of your own from the ground up I would not suggest this book unless you intended to subscribe to the sportsinsights.com website.

If you are an experienced bettor, the information here is so basic it won't do you much good. I'm a inexperienced bettor and I found most of the information too basic for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner summary of how the sports market operates
If you are new to sports betting, there is a lot of good introductory material. There is very realistic advice on money management and how successful a great handicapper can be. There is also a lot of analysis on "smart money" versus "public money". The book defines each of these, how they affect the market, and how to determine which is causing a line move. In many places, the book suggests that by using [...] (a website/service operated by the authors of this book), you will be able to identify the source of market moves, and make money by exploiting this information. The book provides several graphs showing how the "smart money" has done in the past by various sports, and all appear profitable.

I have two criticisms of this book, and both relate to the book's suggestion that you can profit going forward using their methods. The first is the belief that the market is primarily driven by public money. This assumption might have been valid 10 years ago, but the growth of syndicates and the number sharper players could have already changed the market place. As an example, consider the most recent Super Bowl between Indianapolis and New Orleans. In nearly every year in the past, there has been large value playing the "anti-public" middle - betting the favorite (Colts) on the moneyline, and the underdog (Saints) on the spread. This value was caused by mass amounts of public money in years past. In the 2010 Super Bowl, the public money (which always caused profitable middles in the past) was not sufficient to overcome the sharp money. More and more, we are seeing that public money is mostly irrelevant compared to syndicate action at controlling the market price. While there are occasional opportunities in fading the public, these opportunities are usually gobbled up quickly by the professional players. The betting market is very different from how it was 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. Methods that worked in the past (such as blindly betting the underdog and under on Monday Night football) simply don't work anymore.

A second criticism I have is that the book's conclusion - that you can profit from following smart money - is stated bluntly, but there is virtually nothing to support this. There are win/loss records for a few categories, and summaries of how profitable things would have been... But there is no way to validate the authors' conclusions. In fact, one cannot even tell what the source is to distinguish smart versus public money. From where do they get their consensus percentages? There is a huge difference between a consensus at Pinnacle or Matchbook versus a consensus at Sportsinteraction or Stations in Las Vegas.

There is a lot of good information here, and food for thought for newer sports bettors. The book does try to soft-sell "[...]" by suggesting this will help you generate winning plays in the future. The site and service are very good at providing up to date lines, injuries and information. Nearly every professional sports bettor will have some service like Sportsinsights or Don Best, but none of them expect to find profitable plays by focusing on smart or public money (other than chasing steam, in which case you don't care why a line moves).

If you are already a winning sports bettor, your time and money are better spent elsewhere than on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wise Investment
The sports betting world is rife with opinions. If you know anything, then you think you know best, and oh-by-the-way did you see that my new system has hit 5 in a row?

Sports Investing, the new book by the people at Sports Insights, is exactly the wake-up call that bettors need: a well-researched, level-headed guide to achieving realistic profits over the long-term.I love the focus on disciplined money management, perhaps the most common obstacle for the casual bettor. And once you've started following the sharp money (they show you how!), you'll never depend on old school stats or match-up analysis again.Reading this book will change your whole perspective on placing wagers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Investing: Profiting from Point Spreads: Finding Value in the Sports Marketplace (Volume 1)
Fabrizio and Hunter do a great job of distinguishing between a gambling and investing mindset. I'd never heard of the idea of taking a long-term investing approach to sports betting, but this books does a great job laying that out and showing how to truly find value in the sports marketplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legitimizes my hobby of sports betting
So I got my copy of this book from SportsInsight's ebook store (although with Amazon's discount, pricing is similar to the ebook store after shipping).I bought the book because of the interesting title: "Sports Investing.""Investing" instead of betting or gambling? That got my attention!!

Many of the book's ideas make sense.Even Wall Street can't get as systematic as the book's method of being a contrarian in the sports gambling world. The book's author collects data from sports books and then likes to "bet against the public."There are even charts that show results over years of data. Results are solid: generally up, but not outrageously high so it looks reasonable -- in addition to making sense.

I keep the book at my desk because it has already proven to be a good reference for various things I think about when I bet (odds of landing near the point spread, money-line odds & corresponding win %, contrarian method performance by sport, etc.).I also want to re-read the section on smart money.Good stuff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All the Good in Sports
I bought this for my husband this last Christmas - he loves it and is an avid reader of sports books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I really wanted to like this book, but there were only about 4 of the 25 stories I found compelling.I'm afraid part of it was that I just did not enjoy this writer's style.I found myself getting bored and trying to hurry through many of the stories.I liked the Tony Dungy story, but if you have read his book you'll find nothing especially new or interesting.

If what you are looking for is more inspiration than page-turning writing, you may enjoy this book more than I. I wish I could give a better report.

4-0 out of 5 stars good service
Great service, speedy delivery - The book itself is pretty simple and I wouldn't recommend the actual book itself.

Product Description
A riveting inside look at the lucrative world of professional high-stakes sports betting by a journalist who lived a secret life as a key operative in the world's most successful sports gambling ring.

When journalist Michael Konik landed an interview with Rick "Big Daddy" Matthews, the largest bet he'd placed on a sporting event was $200. Konik, an expert blackjack and poker player, was no stranger to Vegas. But Matthews was in a different league: the man was rumored to be the world's smartest sports bettor, the mastermind behind "the Brain Trust," a shadowy group of gamblers known for their expertise in beating the Vegas line. Konik had heard the word on the street -- that Matthews was a snake, a conniver who would do anything to gain an edge. But he was also brilliant, cunning, and charming. And when he asked Konik if he'd like to "make a little money" during the football season, the writer found himself seduced . . .

So began Michael Konik's wild ride as an operative of the elite Brain Trust. In The Smart Money, Konik takes readers behind the veil of secrecy shrouding the most successful sports betting operation in America, bypassing the myths and the rumors, going all the way to its innermost sanctum. He reveals how they -- and he -- got rich by beating the Vegas lines and, ultimately, the multimillion-dollar offshore betting circuit. He details the excesses and the betrayals, the horse-trading and the paranoia, that are the perks and perils of a lifestyle in which staking inordinate sums of money on the outcome of a single event -- sometimes as much as $1 million on a football game -- is a normal part of doing business. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Ride Into High Rolling Sports Betting
I thoroughly enjoyed this read. This story of Michael Konik's adventure in to the world of high stakes sports betting and the trials and tribulations that he encountered on that roller coaster ride is something very few of us will ever get to know but are richer for reading about.

I won't go in to the storyline because I don't like to be a spoiler. I can say I was engrossed in how the story progressed as Konik became more and more well known amongst the bookies and their desire to prevent him from placing any kinds of 'real' bets. His association with the Brain Trust and how they operate is fascinating as you realize the business of betting successfully is just that, a business and is run as such.

This is not really a book about how to bet sports but more a story on what to expect when betting on sporting events. Granted you will not likely win with the win expectancy that the author experienced but he did show that even when you have the odds in your favor there are times they still go against you.

I recommend this to people who like to read about gamblers and how they operate. While I consider it a very well told story I will not give it a 5 star rating because it was a book I could put down for days at a time and while the read at times was compelling, the writing style was like that of a columnist and for 5 stars it would need to be better than that. This is a 4.5 star read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Michael Konik is the bookie!
After being robbed of $10 I feel like Michael Konik is my bookie and I just hit a 12 game teaser and he won't give me my money back.A waste of time and I have been to all the places in the book and he does nothing to paint the picture. The real con here is that Michael Konikpasses him self off as a writer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Man's Dream Fulfilled!
Every American man at one point in his life dreams of the fast life of Las Vegas. We talk about the high-roller status, the private jets and hotel entrances, the RFB (oh yes the full RFB), the showgirls, and betting more than the average guy, and winning more than the average guy.

Mr.Konik lived this Vegas high life, made a fortune, and lived to tell about it. The Smart Money is Mr. Konik's seductive and suspenseful account how he and his group of high-rolling, numbers-driven, syndicated sports bettors did what most people just dream and talk about, and made out with millions to the dismay of bookies world-wide. Read this because someone proved it can be done, and you know you want to know how he did it.

Mr. Konik writes with ease, great clarity, and a keen sense of storytelling. There are mini-stories within the global picture, and some of the most memorable characters captured in writing about gambling. The best part of all this fantasy stuff is that it's a true story.

Don't miss this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
Smart Money is a terrific book that takes you behind the scenes of a gambling syndicate and the thinking of the bookies in Vegas. If you're looking for secrets on how to win millions, you won't get them here. This book is the tale of a "normal" guy who knows just enough about the sports betting world to help the Brain Trust win millions from Vegas and various off shore sports books by following their directions - then learns enough to start his own syndicate. The author does a great job expressing his personal thoughts through out the book as he wonders if this is what life should really be about.

A great read for anyone who is interested in sports, curious about the lines/odds, and perhaps has placed a wager or two.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great War Stories with some Tips
A very interesting read. The book reviews the author's experience working with a sports betting syndicate. There are some good war stories, mixed together with some tips and ideas that are useful for sports betting. This book can psyche you up to be a "sharp bettor" in the sports betting world.

This reminds me of the "Market Wizard" books for investors and traders. Those books can get traders "psyched up" fortrading/investing.This book is a surprisingly motivating book. ... Read more

What a great collection of Walter Iooss swimsuit issues from Past to present. Great gift for the guys and girls.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heaven - Walter Iooss (Sports Illustrated)
Long before Victoria's Secret and well before America's Top Model, there was the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition. What began as a way to boost flagging magazine sales during the winter months of 1964 turned into an instant hit and over the last four decades, an eventual institution.

Nobody has made more trips and shot more models for it than S.I.'s top photographer, Walter Iooss. Beginning in the Bahamas in 1972, Iooss has travelled to some of the world's most exotic locations to photograph both up-and-coming as well as some of the top supermodels the modern world has ever met.

As an exceptional sports photographer (see his book `Athlete' for the best in sports photography), Iooss has demonstrated a remarkable flair for capturing images that have managed to stand the test of time. In `Heaven,' Iooss has assembled the highlights of his favorite trips from 16 different locations (from Mexico and South Africa to the virtual destination-making choices of the Seychelles and the Maldives) where some of Iooss's shots have put subjects like Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Carol Alt and Kathy Ireland on the permanent supermodel map. His work continues thru today as he photographs the likes of Brooklyn Decker, Marissa Miller and Bar Refaeli, all in settings that are exotic yet simple and dramatic while fun.

With it's large scale, coffee table format, complete with collages and journal notes, Iooss's `Heaven' is a great travelogue, beauty book and photography exhibition all in one. Introduction by Jimmy Buffett - of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars great photos from a great photographer

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for a typical student
This book might serve the purpose of an athlete, but may not be good for a typical student or non-student.
It has cited too many references, as if it is for a student pursuing a research program. An average undergraduate student has no time to scan through piles of references cited in this book.
It has little by way of visual aids.
Its contents do not present a straightforward methodology for an average person to deduce pros and cons of a food menu.
It has some biased opinions. For example, Figure 1.4 does not list Smoking as a possible cause for Lung Cancer.
It does not give any information about the author, apart from the author's being at the Old Dominion University.
The web link www.mhhe.com/williams stated on the back page of this book is not valid. This becomes a frustrating experience.
The book is in Paperback format, is used mainly by community-college students with limited budgets for books, and is not a monopoly book. Many better and cheaper textbooks on this subject are available from other publishers. Thus, this book's price tag of $95 is super high. Even the 7th edition's price tag of $75 seems to be high.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook
I highly recommended "Nutrition for Health, Fitness and Sport" to exercise science and nutrition students. It's comprehesive yet not too technical.

You may also want to order "Creatine: The Power Supplement" by Williams et al. (Human Kinetics 1999).

PS. You may also want to read my article "Protein metabolism in exercising human with special reference to protein supplementation":

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information that you can understand and apply
Melvin Williams has written a great book on sports nutrition. He takes a chapter to cover every nutrient including supplementation and athletic performance in regards to that nutrient. He also covers fluid and electrolytes. He also includes weight loss, weight gain chapters that arevery useful for any athlete of any level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great
This book -- Great Jews in Sports -- along with a gem of a documentary called "The First Basket" about Jews and Basketball (bet you didn't know a Jewish kid from Brooklyn scored the first basket for the NY Knicks back in 1946) made two Hanukkah gifts for my business partners' son Sam, who wants to be a sports announcer when he grows up. (Also got him a tape recorder so he can tape his play by plays!)

5-0 out of 5 stars I sent my grandson this great book

Product Description

What's the fastest a human can run the 100-meter sprint?
What's the longest a human can hold his breath?
What are the limits of human performance?
Welcome to The Perfection Point.

Until 1954, common wisdom and scientific knowledge considered a sub-four-minute mile an impossible feat for a human. But then Roger Bannister broke that mark, followed quickly by a host of other athletes. Today the world record stands at 3 minutes, 43 seconds, yet even that number doesn't tell the full story of how fast humans can run a mile—records are a mark of how well people have done, not how well they can do. What's the actual limit? The answer lies in The Perfection Point.

In this fascinating and thought-provoking book, John Brenkus, the host, co-creator, and executive producer of ESPN's Sport Science, ventures across the sports world to provide an in-depth look at the absolute limits of human performance. Beginning with the current world records for a variety of sports, Brenkus finds the “perfection point” for each, zeroing in on the speeds, heights, distances, and times that humans will get closer to but never exceed.

Combining cutting-edge science with the fundamentals of each sport, Brenkus answers questions as old as competition itself, exploring the outer realm of what's possible in athletics. Using engrossing and accessible language, he applies statistics, physics, and physiology to uncover perfection points such as:

  • the highest dunk
  • the longest home run
  • the fastest mile
  • the longest golf drive
  • the heaviest bench press

Intriguing, detailed, and controversial, the answers that Brenkus provides are essential reading for every sports fan. For years, coaches, pundits, and experts have speculated about the extremes of human ability. The Perfection Point finally provides the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars 543 Yards: The Limit Off The Tee
Records are made to be broken, or so it is said.At some point, however, one can run into the limits of physics and human physiology. It's probably not possible for a baseball player to hit a home run that travels a mile, for example. Why?Because the momentum the baseball would needed to overcome the air resistance over the course of a 5,280 foot home run could not be produced by a human, whether on steroids or not. That would simply exceed what we are designed to do.

We can do the math, if you like, but I'll warn you, your eyes would glaze over, so I will skip it for now.

Or, alternatively, we can let someone else do the math and we can look at their results.

John Brenkus, the host and executive producer of ESPN's Sport Science did just that to provide a hard look at the absolute limits of human performance. In a new book, Brenkus finds the "Perfection Point" forseveral sports, golf included,by determining the speeds, heights, distances that mark the limits of human performance. To do this, he used statistics, physics, and physiology to uncover the limits for the longest golf drive, among other sports, such as the longest home run, the fastest time for a mile in track and field, the heaviest bench press in weightlifting, etc.

Brenkus results are not a dry math and physics lesson suitable only for a university lecture to engineering students, instead, his illustrations are not only informative, they are quite entertaining and easily understandable.

In the world of golf, Brenkus's examination for driving the ball found a 543 yard theoretical limit, a 23% increase (125 yards) from the current record of 418 yards held by current long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski. Brenkus states that Sadlowski has slight technical flaws in his swing, and that correcting them would add another 17 yards to the 418 yard record. He also notes that with more flexibility, added height and yes, more muscle, more yards can be added to reach his calculated limit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book. A must for sports fans.
My 14-year old science-loving son enjoys watching "Sport Science" clips on YouTube, plus he constantly asks questions about the limits of human performance. What is the highest possible dunk? The fastest possible 100m? The mightiest possible power lift? I thought that this book would be a definite hit for him. We pre-ordered the book and it arrived yesterday. I got a chance to read it before my son got home and knew that he would really enjoy it. When he saw the book he immediately rushed to read it. Of course, he wanted to just get to The Numbers at first:) John Brenkus (who is the host of Sport Science) does a wonderful job of making this topic fun and interesting, plus he does a nice job on the analytical bits where he explains how he (or rather the experts he quotes) actually get to The Numbers.

One quibble: The book keeps on going on about what we could theoretically eventually achieve in time, but - hey - we will be a different species by then given our rate of evolution. Huh? According to one expert, we are a different species than we were 200 years ago and we will certainly be a different species in a 1000 years. Hmmm. Strange.

Remember this book is full of statistical models about theoretical maximums. [Note: I am a statistician by training so I appreciate statistical models for what they are.] There is certainly no guarantee that humans will reach these theoretical maximums, but remember these are just that- theoretical maximums. A human will NEVER run a 100m faster than 8.99 seconds. Will he ever reach the theoretical maximum? Maybe, maybe not. He will approach the theoretical maximum, but he never will surpass it because he never can surpass it due to human limitations. (This is where the different species stuff comes in; a different species of human - one more "evolved" -would have different limitations, and, thus, different theoretical maximums and all that).

Now that man has goals to aim for, he will certainly have a better shot at reaching the theoretical maximums. Thank you, John Brenkus, and good luck, mankind!

The conclusion of this book is the best part, but I found that I needed to read the '101 ways' to really understand it.I suggest you scan the table of contents to see if what leads you to look into this book is addressed, and just buy it if any are even close. If you think you need this book.... you do.Buy it, read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much Needed
This is a much needed book in my opinion.I want to do everything I can to help my child. Also recommended: 'Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Your Nonprofit Corporation' by Ms. Cellaneous, The Unknown Attorney, for a look at kids sports and booster clubs from a legal and protective (of your kids) viewpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Dr. Fish's book is truly outstanding. This book has brought me and my children closer together and I would highly recommend other parents to read it. My attitude toward my children and their athletics has changed and I have a new outlook on being a positive sports parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read For All Sports Parents
Every parent with sports-playing kids needs this book!I saw Dr. Fish on The Today show two months ago and I really liked what he had to say about not pushing kids too hard so I got the book. Since then, I've given a copy to two parents on my daughter's soccer team and insisted that my husband (who gets carried away with our son's hockey to read it). This book has validated me in my decision not to allow my daughter to be on the travel team right now. (We have two other kids with activities so the travel has been an issue.) I like how he offers advice on how to help your child and evaluate your child's experience. This is just an overall great guide for parents whether or not there's a problem or issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great pictures
i got this as a gift for my boyfriend, an avid bball fan, he loved all the articles and pictures. its a pretty big coffee table book, and arrived quickly in good condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Not what I expected at all, but maybe that's my fault.

I was expecting a collection of basketball's greatest moments, but instead got more or less a history of basketball with pictures that depict very random moments and players of basketball.

It would've been okay as a history book if the writers weren't sports writers; since it is, it's neither history nor journalism but something very awkward inbetween.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for hardcore b-ball fans
SI has a great reputation and they've created a great thing here. Like the football book, this is oversized and perfect for the coffee table. In our house, it has helped kick start lot of discussions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
This book does a great job of identifying a wide range of Gulf Coast species. It's a great tool for rookie and veteran anglers alike. I've been fishing for well over 20 years and I learned a lot from reading this book. A couple of the features that I enjoyed particularly are the food value, and angling tip sections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the amateur and pro alike.
After shopping for a book of this nature, I got tired of the book store prices and was glad when I found it at Amazon.com.Shortly after placing my order, I found it at Wal-Mart for about $7.00 more.Always Low Prices should be Amazon's slogan. Great book to own with great details such as: food quality, how to fish for, avg. size and weight etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't get fined???????
With so many restrictions and diffrent types of fish in the gulf, the last thing you want is an illegal fish. "Sport Fish of the Gulf" is on my vessel when I fish!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the emerging gulf fisherman
I enjoyed reading each and every species entry. The author is obviously a fish enthusiast when it comes to cuisine due to the fact that 90% of the animals he lists are described at the very least as 'tasty'.The illustrations are exquisite and the descriptions for each fish type are thorough.I would recommend this book for anyone new to fishing the Gulf of Mexico.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book and Reference
This book is well written and nicely cross referenced. When it's not on my boat during a fishing trip, it stays in the throne room for good reading. The only complaint I have is that the author seems to think nearly every fish in the sea is tasty. Only a few of the fish in the book are labeled as "Poor" when it comes to food quality. ... Product Description

The first book to gather firsthand accounts of successful practices, and thinking habits, of sports legends and super-athletes—from across sports including football, baseball, basketball, boxing, golf, car-racing, and swimming—this work holds lessons that can power not only athletic success, but winning in any daily challenges of life or work. The result of years of research, Psychology of Champions offers the very personal words of star athletes who explain how they overcame such obstacles as fear, discouragement, and anxiety, and were able to move on to success. Each story—including from those of baseball great Ted Williams, basketball star Michael Jordan, football's famed Deion Sanders, and dozens more from across sports —is unique. Yet, the authors determine that, when all is said and done, the overriding variables accounting for the greatest success fall into three categories: motivation, confidence, and concentration. Barrell and Ryback spell out the rules for such success after each section in this absorbing book. The result is a book that not only entertains and educates us with firsthand accounts of ever-popular sports heroes, but also instructs athletes, amateur or professional, and arguably anyone with a goal to achieve in work or life.

In-the-moment accounts reveal just what to do in various critical periods of sports competition—from being at bat in baseball, to making an instantaneous decision as a quarterback, firing the winning basket in the dying moments of a game, or launching the winning move in boxing or judo. Barrell and Ryback draw the lessons together in what they term The Focus Edge mindset. That mindset—and this book— says one former Olympian, take greatness and make it accessible to you and me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bag of Great Ingredients -- But Needs A Chef
This book really is a mixed bag of good ingredients. It has lots of new interviews with true American sports greats talking about their inner thoughts conducted by two degreed psychologists. Lots of first-hand insight and wisdom here. But unfortunately these are not mixed or cooked with much else; resulting not in a fine meal, but rather we are left still with a collection of individual bits and pieces.

It's very surprising that a book on the psychology of champions doesn't mention the work of Abraham Maslow or K. Anders Ericsson, and indeed doesn't cite any other of the considerable scientific body of work in the acquisition of expertise or sports psychology. They state, "Although most sport psychology books from experimental psychology, we have utilized a very different approach called experiential (not experimental) research. This type of research focuses on the actual experiences of human beings as the source of its data and conclusions." OK. But other than a `Focus Edge' catchphrase repeated on and on, the results are pretty thin considering the richness of the ingredients.

The quotations are amazing, really good stuff, but many of them are repeated in different chapters. And sometimes they are different! On page 80 Matt Williams is quoted "Only think about the task at hand. Keep it simple. We tend to overthink. When I am concentrated, things just happen. The speed of the ball appears to slow down." On page 97 it's "Keeping it simple. Thinking only about the task at hand. Things are just happening. Speed of ball appears to slow down." Huh? On page 116 Deion Sanders is quoted, "I want to do what has never been done before. To be creative, to be undone, to show the unseen." But on back on page 20 the quote marks were around "I want to be the best and take things to a new level--to do the undone, to show the unseen, to be creative. I want to do what has never been done before." The repeats and changes are jarring.

So I enjoyed reading the first-hand thoughts, but felt the rest of the `Focus Edge' fill was kinda weak. More science, more background, more history, more insight from the coaches that help create champions -- some or all of these would have been more welcome than the filler 15 pages of `biographical sketches' of the superstars that were already given introductions in the main text. This is not a stand alone book in its subject area, but more a fascinating supplement to other works. It needs more mixing and cooking in other words. I hope you find this review helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Book That Provides Great Value
This exciting book will have great value for sports fans and for anyone interested in becoming a winner in his or her chosen profession, and in life itself. Because I have followed college and professional sports closely for several decades, I have wondered--many times--how and why superstars separate themselves from the pack. This book provides vital, easy-to-emulate answers. Fortunately, the book draws its findings from primary sources--superlative athletes in a cross-section of sports.

The authors avoid clinical psychological jargon. The writing style is clear, yet compelling.

My prediction: Those who read this book and apply its findings will benefit from Psychology of Champions, whatever their activity might be.

The all-color practical Build Your Own Sports Car provides all the information needed to build a road-going two-seater, open-top sports car on a budget, using standard tools, basic skills and low-cost materials. The down-to-earth text clearly explains each step along the road to producing a well-engineered, high-performance sports car, providing a learning experience in engineering and design - and opening up a whole new world of fun motoring.

The Haynes Roadster, which has fully independent rear suspension, has been designed with the aid of CAD software to develop the chassis and suspension, resulting in a car with performance and handling to challenge many established kit cars and mainstream sports cars. The design is intended to make use of components sourced primarily from a Ford Sierra donor, although alternative donors are mentioned.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's alright!
Doesn't blow my mind. The information in this book can be attained online. There are many websites with many chassis designs to chose from. It's nice to have all the information in one place but I didn't need to buy it. If you are looking into using a different drive train / power plant then this book is not necessary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Book
This book is great for getting one's foot into the door with regards to building a Lotus Seven Replica. It focuses on Independent rear suspension and comes with section by section plans and plans for making jigs with which to make specialized suspension components on.

The book uses the metric system for its measurements and refers to British parts stores and such. It lists the skills needed and gives a quick rundown on the tools required as well as using the required skills.

If you are new to mechanical engineering or metal work it can get some what technical when referring to frame components and one needs to look at the images carefully while reading.

I suggest also reading the Haynes manual for your donor vehicle as well as introductory books on automobile mechanical components and metal fabrication (Welding / component fabrication techniques)

Overall a great book for getting one motivated and started thinking about whats required before diving in.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT the new locost reference
I was really expecting this book to bring a much needed update on Ron Champion's book but it's more of the same. The donor is still UK only and even there, it's getting hard to find. The drawings have dimensional errors like Champion's book. The design of the chassis is still lacking because it still does not incorporate some triangulations (Aussie mods) that are known to improve rigidity. A lot of the new designs shown in the book are overly complex (the pedal box is a good example). Finally, it still leaves a bunch of details out. I would recommend people to stay with Champion's book for inspiration and complement with Tanner's book or join a forum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great seller
The book arrived really fast and it was in the condition stated.Would definately by from this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great companion book to the original "build a sports car for 250"
this is a great companion book for those who wish to build a "Locost" sports car. Very similar to the original which as far as i can tell is no longer printed (and being sold on ebay for as much as ten times it's original cost.) If you want to get into the "Locost" sportscar world this book will get you there. (that and three years of weekends) ... Read more

Product Description
Out of the lifestyle revlutiion of the past quarter century has emerged a new kindof recreational athlete, oen more likely to pursue a physical activity that brings health benefits than to tackle a traditional "rough-and-tumble" sport. As a result, "overuse" or "chronic" injuries, such as "runner's knee" and "swimmer's shoulder", are increasingly replacing sprains, strains, and breaks as the badge of the weekend Warrior.

The sports medicine profession has responded to the rise in overuse injuries by placing greater emphasis on injury prevention, developing new diagnostic and treatment techniques, and promoting rehabilitation as an aid to full recovery. This is what Dr. Lyle J. Micheli, one of the nation's foremost sports medicine authorities, calls the "new sports medicine."

In The Sports Medicine Bible, Dr. Micheli responds to the need for more and better answers to the questions posed by recreational athletes desperate for sound medical advice that will help them return to their physical regimens as quickly as possible. He emphasizes strength and flexibility as the keys to injury prevention, encourages early motion rather than immobilization during the rehabilitation process, and recommends other proven techniques that are replacing the sports medicine techniques of past generations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not even a page on hamstring injuries? Are you kidding me?
It boggles my mind that this book can't even be bothered to devote a single page specifically to hamstring injuries and rehabilitation. This is one of the most common injuries at any level of sport, and it is inexcusable this text does not have a section specifically devoted to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This book is a good place to start looking for help if you suffer a sports related injury. Naturally, it can't cover every conceivable problem but what it does cover is clearly written and helpful. I recommend it to my friends who get injured.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am a student athletic trainer at my high school (A student review done by Adam.F)
The book the sports Medicine Bible is manly about preventing, detecting, and treating Sports injuries. Most of the injuries that are listed are common. They list acute and Recurring injuries. Chapter 1-4 tells about why this book was written, and the basic Point of the book. Chapter 6-17 is about the different sections of the body. The last 3 Chapters are about miscellaneous stuff.

Product Description

The legendary Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, considered by most to be the first sports agent, negotiated a $3,000-per-game contract for Red Grange to play professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1933. Today, salaries in the tens of millions of dollars are commonplace, and instead of theatrical promoters and impresarios, professionally trained businessmen and lawyers dominate the business. But whereas rules and penalties govern the playing field, there are far fewer restrictions on agents. Incidents of agents' manipulating athletes, ranging from investment scams to outright theft of a player's money, are far too frequent, and there is growing consensus for reform

In The Business of Sports Agents, Kenneth L. Shropshire and Timothy Davis, experts in the fields of sports business and law, examine the history of the sports agent business and the rules and laws developed to regulate the profession. They also consider recommendations for reform, including uniform laws that would apply to all agents, redefining amateurism in college sports, and stiffening requirements for licensing agents. This revised and expanded second edition brings the volume up-to-date on recent changes in the industry, including:

- the closing of one of the largest agencies
- high-profile personnel moves
- passage of the federal Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act
- the National Football League's aggressive and high-profile efforts to regulate agents

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for anyone looking to get into the industry.
It takes skill to deal with the massive corporations that are NFL, MLB, and NBA teams, just like it takes skill to play in those leagues. This newly expanded and updated second edition of "The Business of Sports Agents" is a guide to the subject of the title of the book. Covering the recent changes in the industry, including one agency closing in spite of its size, the constant changes that the business faces, and more. It also covers recent legal challenges, and the league's backlashes against some agents' tactics. "The Business of Sports Agents" is highly recommended for anyone looking to get into the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about American Sports Representation
I just wanted to refute the review below. It must be for another book. This book has nothing to do with British sports or soccer. It deals with American sports--basketball, baseball, and football--and discusses both the history and problems of sports representation. As earlier reviews recommend, it is a 'must read' for anyone aspiring to be a sports agent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better for Britons
This book is interesting, yet focuses primarily on sports business in the UK, and particularly in regard to dealings with soccer clubs. But in terms of applicability to the US market, it's mostly interesting only as a tangential reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Future Sports Agents
This is require reading for our online Sports Agent Course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good read, worth the money
This book is well laid out, cites study after study and disputes the claims of many nutritional (Along with other) "experts" with hard studies. Offers a pretty good synopsis of popular workout supplements along with the pitfalls and benefits of taking them. Well worth the money and a read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Essentials of Sports Nutrition and Supplements
Very disappointing...
The book clearly states that it has a companion CD enclosed with it!
I've never got the CD even though I sent the book back and got a new book shopped with the same error

Second it's obvious that this book was made to be printed in colors (by the figures and diagrams shades)
Yet again this publisher decided to print it in Black & White for some reason (I'm sure you can think of few- maximize profit for ex.)

If the publisher wanted to minimize coasts it's fine!!! But why charge 87 US dollars for it?

Al in all- the publisher managed POOR SCORE!!!! (I used "managed" because as a customer I'm not very hard to please)
