Product Description
Over the last decades, our understanding of the relationship between thermoregulation, performance and fatigue has changed dramatically. New advances in technology and methodology permitted the study of rising and decreasing body temperature on metabolism and provided insights into the role the nervous system plays in determining human performance under thermally stressful situations. Further analysis of previous research has been necessary in addition to considering theories derived from complimentary areas of research such as evolutionary biology, anthropology and cellular and molecular biology. This publication provides different interpretations of recent research for a better understanding of the limitations of thermoregulation. In particular, it presents evidence for the human's ability to anticipate thermal limits and adjust their performance accordingly so that cellular homeostasis is preserved. Further, the book is featuring the inclusion of the effect of reduced body temperature on muscular performance and endurance which today is a popular method for providing avenues of reduced thermal strain and recovery from exercise. This publication will be an essential read for those working in thermal medicine, exercise physiology and human performance. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Do not buy - Incredibly poor physics
This book simply adds to the confusion most people have when trying to understand physics. It is riddled with errors and perpetuates long-standing misconceptions.

Possibly the worst example is the discussion of "conservation of energy". It is not possible to apply mechanical principles to **any** form of striking (from hitting a ball to punching someone) without taking this most important principle of physics into account. Yet the author's explanation is that this is about not getting tired in a fight.

Sir Isaac Newton should come back and haunt this author. I cannot believe that anyone actually proof-read it.

A very, very poor book. Actually worth zero stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Combat Is Not An Exact Science
First of all, I skimmed through the book before buying it, so I knew what I was getting into.I wasn't ever expecting a textbook on physics.I was expecting a book that explained the BASIC physics behind GENERIC martial arts techniques to improve my own understanding of them, so that I could "tighten" them up.

I was GREATLY satisfied.

Now, I teach reality-based martial arts (self-defense), and studied under the late, great Grandmaster David German, the inventor of the T.A.I. system of martial arts, inductee into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and winner of multiple Grandmaster and Master awards (for martial arts). It's hard to impress me when it comes to all things martial arts related.I was very much impressed with this book, however.

For those that were not impressed, I am seeing complaints of "flawed" physics on the one hand, and, on the other, complaints concerning the level of "instruction" this book provides (or fails to provide, as it may be).In both cases I can only shake my head in disbelief.First of all, Martina Sprague never claims to provide a vast and deep understanding of physics in this book.In fact, she comes right out in the beginning of the book and lets the reader know that the aim of the book is to provide a handful of GENERAL principles that can be applied to almost every martial arts technique at any time, in order to help you maximise your profits (or minimise your losses).

On this point I'd like to add that as an instructor, I always try to give my students the most bang for their buck.I do not teach thousands of fancy techniques like most (aesthetic) schools do, nor do I care to delve into the esoteric aspects of martial arts. The students that come to me either know right of the bat or learn quickly that what I teach is not a "style" that one practices to impress or win awards at point tournements.I literally teach what I believe to be the best ways to survive life or death situations, on the street (or anywhere), against one or more armed (and/or unarmed) assailants, at any moment. My students train as they fight, and fight as they have trained (hopefully).Anyone that is familiar with the realities of a street-fight (or mugging, or attempted rape, etc.) knows well that not only are specifics and fine techniques thrown out the window during such an encounter (no matter how much training one has), but that "analysis paralysis" is a real threat - if one can even muster the mental fortitude to analyse ANYTHING at all.

For those looking for specific techniques and complicated physics calculations are not only going to be dissappointed when they read this book, but if they're trying to apply those things to actual combat they are going to be dissappointed at best, hurt/maimed/killed at worst.A real fight is far too fast, too chaotic, too unexpected, and too uncomfortable (mentally and physically) for anything other than the most simple and direct techniques to work. For techniques that are relevant to a reality-based combat situation, Martina Sprague's book is very, very useful!

P.S.:I would also recommend the Fighter's Fact Books by Loren Christensen.

4-0 out of 5 stars BLINDED BY SCIENCE
This book did not meet my expectations. I do not know what I was expecting but do know this was not it. The book covers some good but basic points and may even be a refresher or helpful reference for some. But ultimately if you have any "fighting" skills from some sort of formal training, then you are already familiar with much of this information. I do have to say I always read the reviews on books before I buy them, just to have an idea of what the product will be like. But will still buy a title with not so good reviews, much like when you hear about a bad movie but want to see it for yourself to judge it on your own standards. Well I wish I listened to some of the reviews on this book. I also bought another book by the author that has not been released yet called "Norse Warfare: Unconventional Battle strategies of the Ancient Viking." I really hope this book is going to be better. I gave the book four stars, because I think it could be of help to the novice fighter. Also I would like to add, I am a knuckle-dragger not a scientist and can only say what I know of science and what I read in the book made sense to me (for the most part). If there were major errors in the science and theory presented in this book, then I missed the errors and if there were minor subtle error I really for sure missed them! So the bottom line is to take my review for what it is worth to you.

1-0 out of 5 stars poor or no explanations of planes, levers, biomechanics
The title is deceiving. There are no explanations of levers, planes, momentsof inertia, etc. In a nutshell, all throws are based on the principle of the moment of a couple, that is, initiating rotation about some point by applying equal and opposite forces; there is no science behind the writing in this book. There are excellent judo books which show sound principles of throws and sweeps, such as "Street Stoppers" and "effective combat throws"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing 'why' a technique works makes it work better
Most martial artists know that Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the greatest swordsman of all time, advocated quickness and power as superior to strength and speed. As a practitioner, I have known for years that sheer size and brute strength meant very little to accomplished martial artists, yet I never truly understood why. Having finished this excellent book, now I know.

Sprague's tome helps us reach our full potential in the fighting arts, martial sports, and even in every day conditioning by successfully explaining in straightforward terms how the laws of physics can be applied to generating maximum power from martial technique. She describes how things like balance, momentum, rotational speed, friction, direction, impulse, and conservation of energy can work for or against us in executing striking, kicking, throwing, grappling, and joint manipulating techniques. That pretty much covers all the bases, huh? There are tons of great illustrations, summaries, and even quizzes to supplement the materials. This is an easy to read, easy to implement text that can only help you become a better martial artist.

Product Description
Since the first athletic events found a fan base, sports and statistics have always maintained a tight and at times mythical relationship. As a way to relay the telling of a game's drama and attest to the prodigious powers of the heroes involved, those reporting on the games tallied up the numbers that they believe best described the action and best defined the winning edge. However, they may not have always counted the right numbers. Many of our hallowed beliefs about sports statistics have long been fraught with misnomers. Whether it concerns Scottish football or American baseball, the most revered statistics often have little to do with any winning edge.

Covering an international collection of sports, Statistical Thinking in Sports provides an accessible survey of current research in statistics and sports, written by experts from a variety of arenas. Rather than rely on casual observation, they apply the rigorous tools of statistics to re-examine many of those concepts that have gone from belief to fact, based mostly on the repetition of their claims. Leaving assumption behind, these researchers take on a host of tough questions-

  • Is a tennis player only as good as his or her first serve?
  • Is there such a thing as home field advantage?
  • Do concerns over a decline in soccer's competitive balance have any merit?
  • What of momentum-is its staying power any greater than yesterday's win?
  • And what of pressure performers? Are there such creatures or ultimately, does every performer fall back to his or her established normative?

Investigating a wide range of international team and individual sports, the book considers the ability to make predictions, define trends, and measure any number of influences. It is full of interesting and useful examples for those teaching introductory statistics. Although the articles are aimed at general readers, the serious researcher in sports statistics will also find the articles of value and highly useful as starting points for further research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of acedemic-level articles on various sports topics
While many of the topics are of general interest, this book is not geared for casual fans. The level of mathematics and analysis will exceed your average reader, and excite math/sports geeks. To fully absorb all the articles, you will need somewhat more than an undergraduate degree in mathematics. The difficulty level varies substantially though, and most articles are explained well enough to understand the conclusions, even if the math is beyond you. There are a lot of original concepts analyzed here. From the perspective of a sports modeler, there are some great ideas that serve as starting points to achieving a greater understanding of sports. The ideas and manner of presentation are extremely appealing to sports bettors that approach problems quantitatively.

Some of the original ideas that translate directly into sports gambling include
Statistical analysis of FIFA World rankings (and approaches to handicapping soccer)
Handicapping approaches in Scottish league football, including the use of a bi-variate Poisson distribution for scoring. This one article is worth the price of the book
A peculiar analysis of momentum in MLB following a double play (which I expected to be worthless, but proved very interesting)
Myths in tennis (which had some brilliant analysis, giving a starting point to a player tennis model)

I cannot remember the last time I was so excited reading a new sports stat book.

5-0 out of 5 stars collection of statistical articles on sports
Jim Albert is a professor of statistics and an avid baseball fan.In addition to being one of the leaders of the Section on Statistics in Sports, he has also written the book "Curve Ball" with Jay Bennett that covers the use of statistical methods in baseball.Another one of his books was written for teachers of elementary statistics courses. It teaches them how to make an introductory statistics course interesting by having all the examples come from baseball.

This book is a collection of papers edited by Albert and Koning that covers a wide variety of sports, all with the same theme of showing how serious statistical methods can be used to learn important things about the sport through formal statistical inference and predictions.Albert and Koning wrote an introductory chapter and Albert has also written a chapter in this book about clutch hitting in baseball.Hal Stern, the chairman of the Department of Statistics at UC Irvine and another avid baseball fan contributes a chapter on pitcher-hitter match-ups in baseball.

In 2002 at the Joint Statistical Meetings in New York, I was the program chair for the Section on Statistics in Sport,I am also a professional statistician with a great interest in sports and baseball in particular. Jan Magnus from the Netherlands gave an invited talk about the importance of the second serve in tennis at the invited session that I organized. His paper about myths in tennis is an outgrowth of that research. In addition to baseball, American professional and college football, tennis, European and English league soccer, ice hockey and basketball, these articles cover such sports as Australian football and Scottish football, the Olympic events and track.

Of all the topics covered, baseball is the dominant one. This book makes for interesting reading. ... Read more

    Product Description
The latest edition of Biochemistry Primer for Exercise Science provides upper-level undergraduate and graduate students with an understanding of the essential concepts of biochemistry—molecular biology, basic chemistry, metabolism, and transcription regulation—in an easy-to-understand format. This text builds on the success of the previous edition by offering new topics, new organization of chapters, greater interpretation and integration of key concepts, and new and improved illustrations that clarify the content.

With its updated information based on new research and ideas from exercise science and molecular biology and its greater interpretation of biochemistry in the context of the active human, Biochemistry Primer for Exercise Science, Third Edition, is the only text of its kind in this field. Students trained in traditional exercise physiology can understand basic concepts of energy, but without the knowledge gained from this book they might lack the ability to apply these principles to everyday life.

New information and approaches in this book include the following:

Reorganized chapters give greater attention to the mechanism behind the concepts. Basic metabolic pathways and mechanisms are outlined and the role of exercise in modulating those pathways and mechanisms is addressed.

A deeper and more thorough integration of the topics adds context and aids in comprehension.

New review questions with answers are provided.

A section on oxidative stress and its implications to lifestyle and health are included.

A new section covers signal transduction that leads to changes in the expression of genes and in the amounts of specific proteins.

A thoroughly revamped chapter covers bioenergetics with an overview of energy systems and their role in exercise. This is followed by the more rigorous thermodynamics concepts.

In addition, each chapter addresses the newest, most sophisticated information, discusses future research directions, and contains key points to reinforce understanding. The book also provides a list of abbreviations, conveniently located on the inside front cover, to help the reader become familiar with commonly used biochemistry terms; chapter summaries; a glossary; and a comprehensive reference list to help students absorb and apply the content.

This new edition fully integrates the concepts of biochemistry and physiology of exercise and provides critical information on how genes are controlled. In doing so, it melds the fields of human nutrition, physiology, and biochemistry into a more unifying science, and it presents students with the biochemistry content they need in order to understand the molecular aspects of human physical activity. The text helps prepare students for what lies ahead, and it is a great tool for professionals in related fields who want to learn about the biochemistry of exercise. ... Read more

    Product Description
Vital Point Strikes is a guide to pressure point striking for the average martial artist. Sang H. Kim demystifies the lore of vital point striking and shows you realistic applications of vital point strikes for self-defense and combat sports. For those new to the concept of vital points, he begins by examining the Eastern theory of acupoints, meridians and ki (qi) and the Western scientific concepts of the nervous and circulatory systems, pain threshold and pain tolerance, and the relationship between pain and fear. This synthesis of accepted Eastern and Western theories helps the reader understand what makes vital point striking work and why it can be not only useful in fighting, but deadly. Based on this introduction, you ll learn about 202 vital points for use in fighting including the name, point number, location, involved nerves and blood vessels, applicable techniques, sample applications, and potential results for each point. The points are illustrated in detail on an anatomically correct human model, with English, Chinese, and Korean names as well as point numbers for easy reference. In addition to identifying the vital points, Sang H. Kim gives you detailed information about the type of techniques that work for vital point striking including a discussion of fighting zones and ranges, plexus strikes, stance and footwork, bodily weapons, striking directions and angles and dozens of applications for common empty hand, grappling, groundfighting, knife and gun attacks.Based on over thirty years experience in the martial arts and in-depth research, Sang H. Kim has created one of the most complete books available on the art and science of vital point striking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, just be careful.
This book is and excellent guide and reference of vital points and ways to striking it. The content is well organized and is very easy to locate the parts of the body that you want to study. Just read the Table of Contents and see the example pages.

With time, this book can be a classic. It is really good.

Please use it with responsibility. Check all the advices and be careful because you can hurt yourself or your partner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I highly recommend this work for anyone who is serous about self-defense and learning martial knowledge. I do put out a caution, however, because one should not be going out hitting people to test in application the information they receive in this manuscript. You still need a qualified instructor to learn how to practice these techniques without doing serious harm to your partners. I added this book to my library of vital point strikes and it is one of my favorites, it sits right next to my Encyclopedia of Dim Mak by Erle Montegue (who, in my opinion, still rates number 1 as far as his material and presentation goes).

This book deals mainly with vital points and application of those points for self-defense, and there's nothing wrong with that. I believe this was the author's intent, and he accomplished it very well. However, if you want to have a well rounded information base on both the healing and disruption base of each of the 12 meridian Dim Mak points, Erle Montegue's book would be an important addition to your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive and generally well presented
AN excellently detailed exposition of vulnerable 'Vital' points from both a Western and Eastern perspective, plus some applications based on the points and the authors general drills.

NO doubt a lot of other people worked on this with the author and a lot of other references have been heavily used but the result justifies all that.

It may be too detailed in fact for a number of people who would rather a somewhat smaller number of very effective techniques. However it's probably a great thing if a reader who may want to use such information innapropriately is put off by the effort it might take to go throught this book as that is always a worry when such information is made freely available as it seems to increasingly be these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very informative book
Vital Point Strikes by Sang H. Kim is a thorough book on the vulnerable spots of the human body. It has sections on both Western and Eastern views on vital areas. It talks of the nervous system of Western anatomy and the body's meridians of Eastern medicine, and shows a correlation between the two. It is well illustrated with many anatomical drawings, and it has many photos illustrating striking methods and other self-defense scenarios such as disarming assailants with weapons. One should, however, be aware of the disclaimer that the techniques are not to be misused, and that it is written simply to inform. Also it has a disclaimer that there may be a few inaccuracies in it. But all in all I find it an excellent book for the studies of the martial artist of any style.

4-0 out of 5 stars A dangerous book only the experienced should use.
First things first, this book is excellent. Sang H. Kim has no equal in his art, and I have nothing but full respect for him. Pressure points were a specialty of mine when I was still active in competitive martial arts, and while my outlook on fighting has changed over the years, it's best to end a fight quickly, and going for the vitals is the surefire way to do that. The presentation of this book is very well-organized, has many useful pictures, charts and photos showing every single pressure point [except two I know of that are best kept out of books to the public] and how to apply the strikes in real life situations. This isn't your standard martial arts book that shows you to 'do this if this happens', but it thoroughly explains everything and why you're doing it. My only gripe is with the photos and that they aren't in color, but black and white, so -sometimes- it's hard to see certain things, but usually everything's very clear.

But my main criticism is that this book is extremely dangerous, and I don't think it should've been released with this much information. Any martial artist of any rank can get it, read a few pages, think they're a killing machine, and then will either hurt someone else very seriously, or do something wrong and get hurt them self. Please, if you're interested in getting this book and have martial arts experience, ask your master about it if they know anything. As someone who was on the receiving end of a pressure point strike over 10 years ago, I still haven't recovered from a hit on my inner elbow, and can't hold my arm still without continuous shaking. But if you're using this book for reference and to know what points to keep more protected, that'd be the best reason to get this.

Again, the book itself is an excellent resource, and I wish it had been out when I was younger. Seeing just how many pressure points there are on the human body is incredible, and knowing that you're doing acupuncture in reverse with the knowledge on these pages isn't something to take lightly. Please use the utmost care if you plan on actually using the techniques in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The International Century
This is the international century, so it is most appropriate that authors from 5 countries came together under the expert partnership of Kruger & Riordan who have coedited an international anthology of worker sport (ofwhich there is a chapter here in the book) before. The book is a perfectoverview which would serve a university course well. All chapters (oneexception on Afro-American sport) were written exclusively for the book, and some in fields not before explored: Kruger's history of homosexualityand sport is timely and superb: If the rate of homosexuality is 10 p.c. insport, do the two football players on the field who are gay enjoy thetossing and tumbling differently than their straight co-players? Hiscomparison of fascism and sport in Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany andFranco's Spain shows that a lot was actually invented in Italy and later onrefined by Germany. Wedemeyer puts terrorism and sport (Ireland,Palestinians etc.) into an historical context. Bill Murray (author of 2world histories of soccer)is the best expert on the history of theinternational soccer organizations. Gudrun Doll-Tepper, president of thedisabled organisations, gives a structural analysis of her sport.etc, etc.You name a world expert and you will find it in the book. ... Read more
