Extractions: Within 15 years of the first successful flights in a heavier-than-air craft under power and control, the optimum configuration began to dominate the aviation scene. The aerodynamically efficient high aspect ratio wing combined with a simple to manufacture, structurally efficient cylindrical fuselage and a tailplane and fin mounted to the rear was considered the best design. The following 80 or so years were then devoted to refining this arrangement to squeeze out every last drop of performance. In any event, with returns on investment diminishing, it is becoming clear that if significant gains are to be made, a radical departure from the status quo will be required. The jump across to a bifurcation in the evolutionary tree will be difficult. Much of the huge investment that has been put into the development of current civil transport aircraft will be written off along with decades of design experience. The development of a novel configuration requires a significant investment far in excess of that required to create a new member of an existing family of aircraft e.g., Concorde, B-2... The commercial risk involved would also be a major factor in deciding if the venture should be given the go ahead. Very large returns would need to be achievable to outweigh these disadvantages.

In the summer of 1994, the founder and his team were in the process of planning to set a world record and raise money for a local charity organization by selling souvenirs of the flight. The founder's area of expertise is in rocket powered aircraft in which he set three records in 1990 and was also included in the Ten Most Memorable Record Flights of 1990. According to the record books, he is the only person to fly a rocket aircraft in the last 30 years. He contacted a national record keeping organizations to set a new record. Unfortunately, the rules had changed such that: "the power plant or engine must be fully controllable throughout the flight" and it was explained to him in the same letter that "this is the rule that would prevent you from attempting more records". If this rule was applied retroactively, it would eliminate Chuck Yeager from breaking the sound barrier in the X-1 since he landed with the engine off. This would also eliminate any X-15 flights. However, it was the next paragraph that was also rather limiting:

M.A.C.I. About the Club The L.M.A.C. was formed in 1972 and it's flying site is situated on the Fifteen Acres in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. We are one of the largest clubs in Ireland and are now almost exclusively a radio control club. You may still see the occasional control line or free flight model, (in all probability flown by myself). Most club members fly sport aerobatic models but we have a strong scale following and several helicopter flyers as well. Electric models and gliders are not as popular, which is a pity as they are particularly suited to a site such as we have, i.e. flying in a public park. Our club membership is open to all and we provide free model flying tuition to new members. We are lucky to have some very experienced and helpful senior members who look after beginners. Club membership includes insurance which is obligatory for all our members. The club is affiliated to the Model Aeronautics Council of Ireland which is the controlling body for the sport on a national basis in Ireland.
