Its similarities include its certificate basis, sponsorship by multiple departments (Computer Science and Mathematics in the case of CES), and emphasis on enrichment of existing degree programs. Computational Engineering in Electromagnetics and Acoustics is a new graduate specialization within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering leading to either the M.S. or the Ph.D. degree. The program integrates acoustic and electromagnetic field analyses with modeling tools and circuit design techniques, enabling students to solve real-life problems, such as the design of magnets, microwave circuits, and ultrasound transducers. As industry seeks to efficiently design and optimize cost-effective electromechanical and microwave devices, and to develop ultrasound and EM equipment for improved nondestructive testing and medical imaging, it is making increased use of computer-aided electromagnetic and acoustic analysis methods. Well-designed computational software tools, which have the ability to predict and visualize complex electromagnetic and acoustic field behaviors, can reduce or eliminate many time-consuming and expensive trial-and-error experiments. WPI's ECE faculty recognizes the increasing importance of simulation tools based upon EM/acoustics principles, in addition to circuit computer-aided design (CAD) software, in the design of today's high-technology products. Consequently, the new graduate specialization in computational EM/acoustics engineering will offer highly integrated courses in such topics as fundamental EM/acoustics theories, numerical methods and industrial standard design procedures.
