Product Description

Structure-Borne Sound" is a thorough introduction to structural vibrations with emphasis on audio frequencies and the associated radiation of sound. The book presents in-depth discussions of fundamental principles and basic problems, in order to enable the reader to understand and solve his own problems. It includes chapters dealing with measurement and generation of vibrations and sound, various types of structural wave motion, structural damping and its effects, impedances and vibration responses of the important types of structures, as well as with attenuation of vibrations, and sound radiation from structures. For the third edition, the author fundamentally revised and newly organized the contents of the work. Nevertheless, the intention has been to preserve the style of the previous editions, namely to focus on the fundamentals enabling the reader to analyse further problems.

Product Description
Active noise control --- the reduction of noise by generating an acoustic signal that interferes with the noise --- has become a lively area of both basic research and engineering applications. This book provides an introduction to the field suitable for students, academics, acoustical engineers, product developers, and technology enthusiasts. Written for students with no prior knowledge of acoustics or signal processing but with a reasonable grasp of basic physics and mathematics, the book is short and descriptive, explaining how active noise control works, where it could be used, and what results could be reasonably expected. The author emphasizes physical understanding without mathematical detail; the book can thus be used equally well in independent study, in a classroom with laboratories, or in conjunction with a kit for experiment or demonstration. The book covers the fundamental concepts --- basic acoustics, perception of sound, passive noise control, digital systems, adaptive controllers, and active noise control systems --- and then applies them to practical problems and examples, including:- active control of sound in free and enclosed spaces- active control of sound in ducts - digital control systems- adaptive algorithms in active control systems Scott Snyder has been both a consultant and researcher in the field of active noise and vibration control. He has developed active noise control systems for implementations in France, Japan, the USA, and Australia. He lectures in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Adelaide, South Australia, and his current work focuses on implementations of active noise control. ... Read more

Product Description
This ready reference provides electrical engineers withpractical information on accurate methods for measuring signals andnoise in electronic circuits as well as methods for locating andreducing high frequency noise generated by circuits or externalinterference. Engineers often find that measuring and mitigating highfrequency noise signals in electronic circuits can be problematic whenutilizing common measurement methods. Demonstrating the innovativesolutions he developed as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff atAT&T/Bell Laboratories, solutions which earned him numerous U.S. andforeign patents, Douglas Smith has written the most definitive work onthis subject.
Smith explains design problems related to the new high frequencyelectronic standards, and then systematically provides laboratoryproven methods for making accurate noise measurements, whiledemonstrating how these results should be interpreted. The technicalbackground needed to conduct these experiments is provided as an aidto the novice, and as a reference for the professional. Smith alsodiscusses theoretical concepts as they relate to practicalapplications. Many of the techniques Smith details in this book havebeen previously unpublished, and have been proven to solve problems inhours rather than in the days or weeks of effort it would takeconventional techniques to yield results.
Comprehensive and informative, this volume provides detailed coverageof such areas as:

  • scope probe impedance, grounding, and effective bandwidth,
  • differential measurementtechniques,
  • noise source location and identification,
  • current probe characteristics, operation, and applications,
  • characteristics of sources of interference to measurements andthe minimization of their effects,
  • minimizing coupling ofexternal noise into the equipment under test by measurements,
  • estimating the effect of a measurement on equipment operation,
  • using digital scopes for single shot noise measurements,
  • prediction of equipment electromagnetic interference (EMI)emission and susceptibility of performance,
  • null experiments forvalidating measurement data,
  • the relationship between highfrequency noise and final product reliability.
With governmental regulations and MIL standards now governing theemission of high frequency electronic noise and the susceptibility topulsed EMI, the information presented in this guide is extremelypertinent. Electrical engineers will find High FrequencyMeasurements and Noise in Electronic Circuits an essentialdesktop reference for information and solutions, and engineeringstudents will rely on it as a virtual source book for deciphering the"mysteries" unique to high frequency electronic circuits. ... Product Description

This classic text, an often-requested reprint, develops and explains the foundations of noise-induced processes. At its core is a self-contained, textbook-style presentation of the elements of probability theory, of the theory of Markovian diffusion processes and of the theory of stochastic differential equations, on which the modeling of fluctuating natural and artificial environments is based. Following an introduction to the mathematical tools, the occurrence and the properties of noise-induced transitions are then analyzed for rapidly fluctuating environments describable by the white-noise idealization. Subsequently, more realistic and general types of colored noises are considered. Appropriate practical methods for dealing with these situations are developed. The latter part of the book contains applications and experimental studies illustrating the many facets of noise-induced transitions. The following applications are considered in Noise-Induced Transitions: population dynamics, electrical circuits, chemical and photochemical reactions, non-linear optics, and hydrodynamical systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book that gave me deep physical understanding
This book has no similarity with other books in mechanical vibration field. As the author is the father of Statistical Energy Analysis, this book sometimes looks noise and vibration phenomena from the viewpoints of energy generation and transmission. This view will surely provide readers who are fed up with conventional structural vibration theory with new idea of solving the problems they have at hand. Some topics in the chapter 8, "Advanced Topis in Diagnostics", is worth reading for even very experienced engineers in this field. What I regret is that almost all the examples lack in-detail descriptions. To read this book, readers are recommended to have electric circuit theory, knowledge of statisticsTheory and Application of Statistical Energy Analysis and digital signal processing.Digital Signal Processing ... Product Description
The current revolution in electronic switching and transporttechnologies promises a dramatic increase in the intimacy andsatisfaction that users will experience over imminenttelecommunications networks. However, unless there is a correspondingimprovement in the technologies of the acoustics oftelecommunications, this promise will soon prove empty. The sense ofpresence that people feel when together in a room is largely dueto the psycho-acoustic cues they sense from the human binaural hearingsystem evolved over millennia. Modern acoustic signal processing isjust now beginning to be able to deliver that same experience to usersremotely located from each other. This includes the ability tocommunicate in full duplex with wider bandwidths and multiple audiostreams (e.g. stereo, 3D audio). It also involves locating andseparating audio sources, suppressing noise, and using sound toautomatically steer video cameras. Acoustic Signal Processing for Telecommunication presentsdigital signal processing techniques for telecommunications acousticsthat are both cutting-edge and practical. Each chapter presentsmaterial that has not appeared in book form before and yet is easilyrealizable in today's technology. To this end, both new theory and newimplementation techniques are presented. Topics include new adaptivefiltering algorithms, multi-channel acoustic echo cancellation, noisecontrol, virtual sound, sound source localization for camera tracking, source separation, and microphone arrays. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good coveragebut too simple results
Topics are carefully selected. Good coverage of both traditional and cutting-edge new theories and algorithms. Less errors than a normal technique book. Only key derivations are outlined with others just omitted. This makes it easy to follow for an engineer like me but i suppose an academic researcher may dislike it somewhat. Unfortunately, too few results are given for each algorithm. Readers don't know if the algorithms have the potential to meet the various requirements of EC, i.e., residue error, convergence rate, complexity, numerical stability. (By the way, even a simple touch of industry standard of AEC might be helpful for this book)Anyway, for anyone who is interested in either accademic research or implementation of EC, i guess this book gives him/her a solid starting point. ... Product Description

The reduction of noise emissions is a topic of increasing relevance in the public as well as for the economy. So far, the research has mainly concentrated on aerodynamic noise formation by airplanes, as well as other vehicles. The authors of this book go beyond this standard approach for noise reduction and explore the noise generation by combustion. They develop methods and design criteria in order to minimize the noise formation by combustion in general but for aircraft engines in particular. Hereby the research is focused on the noise formation and propagation in the environment directly linked to the combustion process, since today the understanding of these detailed formation mechanisms of combustion noise is still fragmentary. The book gives a detailed insight into combustion noise and the underlying physical processes combining experiments and simulations.

Product Description

Results of experimental research on aerodynamic and acoustic control of subsonic turbulent jets by acoustic excitation are presented. It was demonstrated that these control methods, originated by authors, not only can intensify mixing (by acoustic irradiation at low frequency), but also notably ease it (at high-frequency irradiation). This research monograph presents the updated results of the authors supplemented by other investigations conducted in USA, Germany and Great Britain. The methods for the numerical simulation of subsonic turbulent jets under acoustic excitation are described in detail, and examples are reviewed of practical applications, including reduction of turbojet engine noise and acoustic control of self-sustained oscillations in wind tunnels.
