Product Description
From the first American orbiting satellite, to Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin's historical walk on the Moon, virtually every major achievement in American Space history was made possible by a Rocketdyne engine. And, that record has stood true for over forty years, as today the Space Shuttle program continues to rely on engines designed and built by Rocketdyne. This book is the story behind that unprecedented accomplishment. It is the chronicle of success of one team of rocket pioneers who propelled the American space program from trailing the Soviet Union in the 1950s and early 1960s into today's position of leadership in space. It is a story of heroes and even a few villains, but mostly it is a story of triumphant success in the human venture into space. For the early history of rocketry up through the work of Dr Robert Goddard in the early 1940s, Kraemer referenced the history books of T A Heppenheimer and Frank Winter. The rest of the book is a chronicle of both the author's own memories and experiences as a member of the Rocketdyne team, as well as those of other key members of this elite group, including: Bill Brennan, George Sutton, Bill Cecka, Doug Hege, Bill Ezell, Tom Myers, John Tormey, Paul Castenholz, Sam Iacobellis, Ed Monteath, Steve Domokos, Stan Gunn, Willy Wilhelm, Bob Biggs, Ted Benham, and Vince Wheelcok. This book is a true testament to the human spirit - and to a dedicated and determined team of aerospace engineers who launched a nation into Space. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocketdyne: Powering Humans into Space by Sara Howard, an Apollo Engineer on the Saturn V.
Oh, my! I love Rocketdyne. They made our F-1 engines on the first stage of the Saturn V. Folks, this is great history. The remarks about the paper while valid, are not the important thing in this book. It is the information and our history. While AIAA is a great organization, they are not in the business of publishing books.

I was privileged to work on the SI-C Stage of the Saturn V during Apollo at the Michoud facility. We saw those engines every day. I am just one of two women who worked as aerospace engineers on the Saturn V.
Many, many people have read this book and urged me to buy it, too. This book has wonderful detail about the trials and triumphs of building these engines. It doesn't stop there. Rocketdyne made many kinds of engines.
A member of AIAA called me as he was reading this book and said, "You guys are National Treasures".
These engines were made with good engineering and very little technology.
The entire Apollo program was made like that. Why do you think our Astronauts returned home safely?

Sara Howard, Author of "Something Funny Happened on the Way to the Moon" and "The Greatest Explosions in the Universe."

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocketdyne: Powering Humans Into Space
I am hungry for liquid rocket engine information, this book helped satisfy that hunger, I loved the authors writing style and found the book easy to read and informative,it was a joy to read about the people involved and the troubles they had to overcome to create these masterpieces of engineering and power, I have already read it a second time, I enjoyed it so much. I have only one criticism of the book and this is a blanket criticism of all of the books that I have bought from AIAA, they should have used a better quality paper, the illustrations were muddy, some of the photos were too small or too dark, like they were not edited for contrast, etc., and a better quality paper would have made all of them clearer, when I look at rocket engine photos I'm looking for details and sometimes the details were unintelligible, BUT, there was a wealth of photos, it's loaded, and a lot of effort was expended by the authors to get them into the book. I feel this a very important book and am glad that it's now part of my library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rocketdyne: Powering Humans into Space
I think that it was a very good review of the booster engine programs at Rocketdyne. I was disappointed that more wasn't said about all the spacecraft engine programs that Rocketdyne contributed to space programs. I think those people that worked on small engines should have been recognized more for thier work. ... Read more

Product Description
Today aircraft combat survivability is now an established design discipline for U.S. military aircraft. More importantly survivability is now an essential part of the U.S. Department of Defense acquisition process. Furthermore, improving public health, safety, and survivability is now woven throughout the civil and commercial sector. From infant car seats to the design of aircraft cargo bay structures that can withstand internal bomb blasts, the government is taking the lead in establishing survivability standards.

Approximately 10,000 copies of the first edition were sold in five printings. It remains the only book of its kind and is required reading for anyone involved in design of air combat vehicles.

The extensively illustrated second edition of the textbook presents the fundamentals of the aircraft combat survivability design discipline as defined by the DoD military standards and acquisition processes. It provides the history of, the concepts for, the assessment methodology, and the design technology for combat survivability analysis and design of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, UAVs, and missiles. Each chapter specifies learning objectives; stresses important points; and includes notes, references, bibliography, and questions.

The Fundamentals of Aircraft Combat Survivability: Analysis and Design on CD-ROM is included with your purchase of the hardcover. The CD-ROM gives you the portability and searchability that you need in your busy environment. It is considerably smaller and lighter than the textbook so it is available when you are away from the office or traveling. It can also be searched to quickly locate a particular word or phrase.

Product Description
Much has changed, both in the space community and in the larger world, in the years since the first edition of this classic, best-selling book appeared.

While there is now a huge collection of core knowledge, tutorial material, mathematical "applets," and design data available about spacecraft systems engineering which did not exist when the first edition was published, the second edition continues to fulfill the book’s original goal—that of linking and integrating the many disciplines relevant to the field of space systems engineering in a way that is impossible when they are considered separately, or even in one text that is the product of many authors. The text starts with an overall description of the basic mission considerations for spacecraft design, including space environment, astrodynamics, and atmospheric reentry. Then the various subsystems are discussed, and in each case, both the theoretical background and the current engineering practice are fully explained.

Some material has been updated to make the treatment consistent with current experience and practice in the field. At the same time, there is much that remains relevant from what are now the earlier decades of the space program. Nothing of real value has been omitted merely on the grounds that it is old. This edition contains a new chapter on reliability analysis, much new technical material in other sections, and many homework problems. The book provides the space systems engineer the tools to evaluate the overall impact of candidate design concepts on the various component subsystems and the integrated system leading to the final design selection.

Despite the incredible richness of Web-based resources for the modern engineer, it remains true that most Web sites and links are exceedingly volatile. For that reason, the authors have chosen to include and reference only that which is accessible through archived references, creating an authoritative text that provides both suitable materials for senior-level courses in aerospace engineering and a useful reference for the practicing aerospace engineer. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good text but very general
I used this book in a space vehicle design class. If you intend to use this text to gain a broad understanding of the basic design considerations for space vehicles, I believe you will be satisfied. If, however, you would like to go into depth regarding rocket propulsion, orbital mechanics, structural/vibration analysis, reentry, etc. look for a text which is devoted to those topics. This text does cover such topics as well as others but is lacking in detail. There are some good examples throughout each chapter and problems at the end of each chapter.

4-0 out of 5 stars difficult design constraints
To an engineering reader, the book gives some appreciation of why it is so expensive in money and time to build a new spacecraft. The text gives a systems-level view of the different components such a craft is likely to need. A propulsion system. Attitude control. Navigation. Communications. All of these must work for the craft to be viable.

The chapters go into the numerous constraints often encountered. Mass is the most critical. Very costly to launch these spacecrafts. And the lifting capacity of whatever launch vehicle is chosen can be one of the major constraints.

Power for the various systems is minimal. Perhaps solar panels can be used. Or a radio isotope thermal generator. But solar panels aren't typically viable for missions to the outer solar system. Whatever is chosen, you have only a trickle of power to work with. Then how to communicate with Earth? The gain on the craft's antenna for transmission and reception is limited.

Amazing that any spacecrafts are successful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I have seen
I'm a senior aerospace engineering student and am the propulsion lead for my aircraft design team. This book is very readable, understandable, and applicable to what I'm doing.I've looked through several other books and this one (as well as Mattingly's Aircraft Engine Design) has the most useful information and has been very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars complete turbine book
This has got to be the most complete turbine book I have ever seen.Containing pretty much everything on cycle analysis, it even provides a good review of thermodynamics and compressible flow.Itdoes, however, look to be a little difficult to teach from with eqautions and graphs flying about, but to the knowledged user it will serve as a great and complete reference.(There are some errors in the text you might want to correct found on the book's webpage.)

5-0 out of 5 stars BestTextbook on Engine Performance
This is the best textbook written on the modeling and performance prediction of gas turbine engines. A systematic method is used to model a variety of engines from the basic turbojet to the advanced afterburning turbofan used in modern fighters. Performance predictions include the effect of engine controls - a unique feature. Turbomachinery design includes structural considerations. This book is a great textbook for junior/senior level courses in aerospace/mechanical engineering. It is being used for a basic course in gas turbine engine and a followup course in engine component design...

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book With Lots of Useful Information
I bought the book "Elements of Gas Turbine Propulsion" in Augustof 1999 and I still read it almost everyday. It is a very interesting book, but it has a seriousflaw in that there are so many errors, it appearsthat the editor(s) were asleep or out to lunch. It was a greatdisserviceto the author, as I think he was shortchanged by the publisher. Being aformer member of the USAF, myself I feel that his work was more meticulousthan this. Perhaps the publisher was in such a hurry to hit the presses atall costs, that this is the result. This seems to be the trend in recentyears. I believe that one of the major networks did and expose regardingmajor publishing house oversights in this area.

Product Description
Unlike the highway traffic engineering subdiscipline of civil engineering, the field of air transportation systems engineering is just emerging. Several good books are available on aircraft avionics, but they do not relate well to the overall air traffic management system. Other books on air traffic control do not discuss air traffic management or the new aspects of central flow control or collaborative decision making.

Air transportation is in a crisis and at a turning point. The world’s air traffic management system is showing the signs of being so successful that its growth is approaching the physical infrastructure capacity limits.

Drawn from research papers presented at two closed-forum research meetings sponsored by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the European Eurocontrol, this new book explains the technical nature of a very complex international air transportation system. It reports on new research that is furthering the evolution of the international air transportation systems. The book promotes our understanding of the technical attributes of delay and its economic effects on aviation related business. The application of mathematical analyses and principles is a growing area of aviation. This book contributes to expanding our understanding of this area. It also provides approaches to airspace management and new roles for controllers and pilots.

Students, engineers, and policy makers will appreciate the use of real-world data, case histories, and extensive graphics of operations, airports, delays, flight tracks, etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography of One of the Pioneers of Aeronautics
Jerome C. "Jerry" Hunsaker was an internationally known teacher and researcher in aerodynamics during the first half of the twentieth century. He made significant contributions to the development of flight systems, fired the enthusiasm of more than a generation of later engineers involved in aviation research, and virtually created the aeronautical engineering program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His career spanned more than six decades of aircraft research and development, where his efforts helped to establish the scientific and mathematical basis for flight. This excellent biography of Hunsaker by William F. Trimble of Auburn University provides a compelling portrait of this pivotal figure in the history of aeronautics.

Born on August 26, 1886, in Creston, Iowa, Hunsaker gratuated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1908, and went on to graduate training at MIT. He earned a doctorate in 1916, and stayed at MIT to create the first American course on aeronautical engineering and to found the internationally famous Department of Aeronautical Engineering. Hunsaker remained at MIT most of the rest of his career, worked closely with the Navy, and trained more an a generation of engineers who carried on his legacy through their engineering accomplishments.

This book does a fine job of capturing the career of this important aeronautical engineer. ... Read more

Product Description
Combustion instability has long been recognized as one of the most important but difficult problems in the development of propulsion systems. The U.S. and the former Soviet Union were simultaneously working during the Cold War to solve the instability problem. However, the scientific basis and engineering approach employed by the Soviets remained largely unknown to the Western world. This bookómuch of it formerly classified material--is a clear exposition of much of the theoretical work on combustion instabilities, performed in support of the Soviet liquid rocket program during its most vigorous period. While there are similarities between Western and Eastern works, there are many distinct differences. The author was one of the small group of Soviet theorists actively engaged in all of the Soviet liquid rocket programs. His development of the field is firmly grounded in fundamental ideas, and progresses to applications of a general sort. A chapter added since the original Russian edition covers both theory and experiment for bifurcations of dynamical behavior in liquid rocket chambers. The book was written by Professor M.S. Natanzon in Russia and edited by Professor F.E.C. Culick of Caltech, two internationally renowned experts in the field. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The recent interest in hypersonics has energizedresearchers, engineers, and scientists working in the field, and hasbrought into focus once again the need for adequate ground testcapabilities to aid in the understanding of the complex physicalphenomenon that accompany high-speed flight. Over the past decade, there have been noteworthy improvements in the worldwide hypersonicground testing infrastructure that will be important in furtheringhypersonic technologies.

The current inventory of hypersonic testing facilities has been verysuccessful, with few major failures or problems. Many of theenhancements highlighted have been driven by requirements for quiettunnels for hypersonic boundary layer transition; long run times, highdynamic pressure, nearly clean air, true enthalpy, and larger sizedfacilities for hypersonic and hypervelocity air breathers; and longerrun times, high dynamic pressure/enthalpy facilities for sensor andmaneuverability issues associated with interceptors.

Timing is critical for new facility development, since one to two decades for research, design, development, construction, and calibration are needed. Experience shows that capability should be in place before a project that requires the new facility capability is started.

This book presents a number of new, innovative approaches to satisfying the enthalpy requirements for air-breathing hypersonic vehicles and planetary entry problems. It is divided into five parts: Introduction; Hypersonic Shock Tunnels; Long Duration Hypersonic Facilities; Ballistic Ranges, Sleds, and Tracks; and Advanced Technologies for Next Generation Facilities. ...
