A good book. The formulae and flow charts will be helpful to cram the exam in time. However, the author should have delved more into the subjects. Should have included more problem patterns. The flowcharts he could would account for less than 60% of the questions that appear on a CA PE exam.

This text covers the basic techniques and applications of engineering economy for all disciplines in the engineering profession.

The writing style emphasizes brief, crisp coverage of the principle or technique discussed in order to reduce the time taken to present and grasp the essentials.

The objective of the text is to explain and demonstrate the principles and techniques of engineering economic analysis as applied in different fields of engineering. This brief text includes coverage of multiple attribute evaluation for instructors who want to include non-economic dimensions in alternative evaluation and the discussion of risk considerations in the appendix, compared to Blanks comprehensive text, where these topics are discussed in two unique chapters. ... Product Description
A real life civil design project for site development is recreated through each chapter in this book to prepare readers for what to expect when working in the field.Coverage begins by introducing the basic setups and standards that anyone beginning a civil design CAD project should know, then moves on to the fundamental concepts common to most civil engineering projects such as grading, contours, and surveying.Readers will then explore the process of creating different types of drawings typically necessary for civil design and see how changing parts of a design can affect the entire project process. The book concludes with methods for estimating quantities for the different types of materials and work that will likely be encountered in an actual drafting assignment. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Okay intro book but too expensive
As the first reviewer wrote, this is something like a Cliff Notes version of the book you were hoping for. It's only 152 pages long, including the contents pages and index. There are a fair amount of illustrations so the actual text is reduced again by that much. The book's pages are only 6"x9" despite the impression from the picture that it is much larger. The included CD has a few CAD and other files to use as a basis for the exercises but other than that is basically empty.

FYI, you can see the table of contents at the Library of Congress website or at the publisher's website.

If this book were $10 or even $20 it might not be a bad deal, but the publisher's list price is ridiculous and I felt obliged to ding the review one star over the price issue.

Contentwise, I think it's okay if you looking for an AutoCAD oriented introduction to civil drafting. It is well organized and mostly written in straightforward, easy-to-understand English.I haven't yet done the CAD exercises but at a glance they look like they support the material adequately.

Unfortunately, if you want more than a basic introduction to the subject of civil drafting, you'll have to look elsewhere. And if you are looking for a book full of material that would be helpful in civil design and engineering this is not the book for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cliff Notes version of book I was expecting...
This book is such a basic and broad introduction to civil drafting that I double-checked that it was the one I had ordered.Unless you know NOTHING about civil engineering or AutoCAD, I suggest you skip this book and order something with a little more information. This book is so content-less that I'm shocked the publishers thought that they could get $45 for a $10 book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Geotech use of 'reliability based design'
Harr presents a very good resource, full of practical examples for the probabilistic methods he introduces.Contains an introduction to probability, distributions. The most useful thing from a Geotechnical Engineering (or civil engineering) viewpoint is the introduction of the Beta Distribution and the idea of Maximum entropy.I will certainly be using this resource to aid in the probabilistic design of open pit slopes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only reference for Point Estimate Methods
This book fills a useful gap for those working in the fields of structural reliability, probabilistic design and reliability-based design optimization. There has been a lot of interest in Point Estimate Methods which are useul in developing probabilistic models without computing gradients of your response function. This book is the only open-source reference I could find on that subject - and even without that topic, it's still worth the price.

Customer Reviews (4)

2-0 out of 5 stars Jumpy
This was a required book for class and it didn't live up to my high standards. There is no fluidity to this book. I hope the drafters who helped write this book are better at planning road ways than planning the order of the chapters this book has. The chapters jump around too much for my liking. This book, however, is ADDA certified.

5-0 out of 5 stars Civil Drafting Technology
SO far a great book.Shipped really fast, was in perfect shape as noted, I have no disappointments with the sellers.

3-0 out of 5 stars civil drafting technology
I purchased this book with the hopes that it would help me understand civil drafting. There is no answer section to check my work. So,,,I do not know if I am on the right track with my understanding.
Does anyone know if there is a solutions manual?

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated, generic, and overpriced
When I read the word Drafting in the title I assumed this book would focus on civil drafting as it applies to modern (CAD) technology. Instead there are many references to manual drafting which few drafters use any more. A better title would leave the technology out of the title and substitute the word theory, thus letting the buyer know that this is a generic overview of civil drafting theory, not a book that a CAD operator will get much use out of.

In my estimation this book has a Value of around thirty dollars only. Unfortunately, pricing trends seem to indicate that any words committed to print by the The Gods (engineers, programmers, etc.) are worth their weight in gold, regardless of their value. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It is OK
The real test is nothing like what is in this book. The problems are challenging and it is good idea to practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars good practice, but not on-target...
I used this as a practice tool, and it's IS good for that, but don't count on the exam problems looking much like the one in this book. These are too time-consuming compared to what's on the exam. The exam has more "blow & go" type probs.Lindberg's here are too in depth to be similar.Yes, I DID pass...

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Reflective of New Exam Format
This has some so-so problems, better to study and do problems from Lindberg's Reference Manual (CERM8).Lindberg had the previous test format dialed and came highly recommended, so I was surprised to find his references so off base for the current PE exam. The new multiple choice format is not reflected in this sample exam, and the real test is very different in both content and structure. On the exam, subject matter bounces around from structures to geotech to wastewater, etc. The problems on the exam do not cascade, ie- are not interelated or build on each other, like they do in this sample. Also, his morning am sample problems consists of 25% structures-no way is this reflective of the test, the actual # of structural problems in the am is around 15%.He curiously includes a very subjective cloverleaf problem and a water resources runoff method that is not covered in his text...If these subjects weren't important to cover with problems in the text, why include them in the practice exam? They don't occur on the PE. The pm portions of his sample DO however, reflect the level of knowledge demanded in each subject area. All in all, I rate it two stars because it is a poor reflection of actual format and tends to deplete confidence at a time prior to the PE examination when examinees need confidence the most.

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh...
The book came in very fast, but the front cover was pretty damaged during shipping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Soil Mechanics Text
This text book is a good read, it explains it's figures and has much better descriptions for the examples to follow. I wish i had this Book last year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Undergraduate Students and Beginners!
If you're looking for a Soil Mechanics text with clear-cut explanations, current design perspectives, and newcomer-friendliness: look no further. Coduto's done a great job with this text, and for undergraduate instruction in soil mechanics, or for the beginner in the field, this is the most easy-to-understand text around.

This is not, however, a book that will continue to be used regularly by a geotechnical practitioner. The entry-level nature of the text means (almost by definition) that it is not dense enough to maintain its usefulness once the user has mastered the basics. It may serve as a nice reference for the practing civil engineer who is not involved in geotechnical engineering, as it covers the basics nicely (e.g., so what does my geotech consultant mean by "equivalent unit weight"?)

5-0 out of 5 stars I was there.
I was one of the students in Don Coduto's graduate level class that helped him "use" this book when it was in the final review stages. We helped him find all the little mistakes before final publishing.I still carry around that old 700+ page volume of a notebook we had for that class. It's nice to see it finally published. It is an OUTSTANDING book making geotechincal work more readily accessible to the average engineer. The example problems will help one grasp the concepts faster.Don can always be contacted with questions as well.ENJOY.
