Product Description
Boundary Element Methods (BEM) have gained widespread acceptance in the areas of engineering analysis related to potential problems and elasticity. These techniques are also being used increasingly for the analysis of heat and mass transfer problems and more recently in flow analysis or momentum transport. The advantages of the method, such as the reduction of dimensionality for linear differential equations, ease of coding and smaller memory requirements and its high level of accuracy and computational efficiency, will ensure that its use will become more and more common. Until now coverage of the method's use in transport phenomena has been confined to journals and multi-editor works and textbook coverage has not been available. The purpose of this book is to provide a monograph to fill this gap. It aims to provide a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of the method and its capability in solving a wide range of transport phenomena problems, especially in heat and mass transfer. The book can be used as a stand alone text for a short BEM course or as a supplement to the more traditional transport phenomena texts in a conventional course to reinforce the numerical aspects of the subject. It can also be used as a self study tool for researchers involved in engineering analysis. Examples are provided throughout the text to illustrate the ideas and solutions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and easy to follow
The authors proceed through the study of CFD in a systematic and sensible manner, starting with the very basics, and building up to useful problem formulations and solutions.

Very little is assumed about the reader's background.Any familiarity with PDE's will make this a very easy book to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy presentation to not so easy concepts!
This book presents some fundamentals of CFD based on straightforward mathematical tools giving fast access to very interesting general behaviours of PDE families. Apart from the introduction of basic concepts, finite differences and finite volume discretizations, the heart of the book lies in chapters 4,6,7 where a clear and systematic methodology to go from PDE to ODE to O(delta)E is presented. The classical stabilities associated to the most famous time steppings are presented. Some other features such as multigrid, splitting, and upwind dissipations are presented in the same clear setting. The book is very well written, clear and straightforward. I hope more advancedtopics will be also included in further editions!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics
Fundamentals of Computational Fluid Dynamics is one of several technically useful books on the subject. What sets it apart, however, is its ability to attract and maintain the reader's interest in what could otherwise be a dry topic.

The authors walk the student through a logical development of all aspects of the material.Helpful examples and end-of-chapter exercises solidify student learning in a practical manner. This book is an excellent resource, focusing on the fundamentals of the topic, and has my full recommendation. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Practical Optimization
Basically I liked the book.As a practicing "front-line" grunt aersospace engineer for a large Fortune 500 Company this book is a good and practical book for the control systems analysis I do.The big problem with optimization books like this one is that the examples are very contrived and trival. What a book like this is suppose to do is help one figure out if the the problem he/she is currently working can be "cast" into an optimization problem and then solved by any of the algorithms presented. This book is a little weak in that respect. But it is still useful and I am glad I have it in my collection. ... Product Description

Most undergraduate books for engineering dynamics exhibit a continuing disconnect from either the requirements of subsequent coursework or the practice of dynamics in an engineering career. Dynamics in Engineering Practice, Tenth Edition counters this dated viewpoint with a modern approach that is better suited to today’s engineering study and practice. Written by a renowned teacher, researcher, and professional consultant in applied dynamics, this book represents a revolutionary approach to modern engineering dynamics analysis—one you can assimilate quickly and easily to get immediate results.

Real-World Guidance to Reconnect Principles and Practice

The book begins by establishing the premise that most "dynamics engineers" are developing and analyzing models to predict motion, and that the subject of differential equations is the natural language for dynamics. From this starting point, the author immediately presents mechanical vibration examples to demonstrate applications of f=ma and work-energy principles, and he includes multiple "real-world" 1DOF and MDOF planar dynamics examples, which are completely worked out.

Learn Exactly How an Engineer REALLY Solves Engineering Modeling and Analysis Problems

Dynamics describes the continuous evolution of motion, yet most textbooks approach the field as a series of ‘‘snapshots,’’ posing questions about variables at specific idealized positions or orientations. Advancing the idea that a practicing dynamics engineer’s central role is to develop and analyze models, this book:

  • Presents an ordered and logical set of procedures and alternatives for developing models and solutions for any planar dynamic or vibration example
  • Uses repeated examples to demonstrate how models are analyzed via current computer approaches
  • Includes the latest MATLAB® updates and other proven methods for modeling and analysis
  • Helps readers ask the right questions to get the most out of problems and optimize modeling of general dynamic systems.

Based on the author’s more than 40 years of experience teaching and developing courses in dynamics, this book teaches general skills—where effectiveness can be demonstrated for a wide range of problems, rather than a collection of problem-specific "tricks." An essential resource at both the academic and professional levels, this text will be indispensable to both students and working engineers analyzing real dynamic systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Good
Engineering Mechanics: Statics is a fairly decent book for an introductory course into Statics, which is the first course one can take in Engineering at my school. The book covers a fair amount of topics and, for the purposes of our class, went beyond what was required by the course. The book makes solid use of calculus - both single and multivariable - where necessary and does not do more "handwaving" than necessary. As for its drawbacks, however, the book does make quite a lot of errors in its solutions key that proved to be somewhat frustrating when I attempted to review material by myself and found that I couldn't get the same answers as the solutions key. Additionally, some of the diagrams are constructed in a very confusing manner and it is nearly impossible to pick out the dimensions of the diagram (i.e, does this joint have a z-component or not). The author should've probably taken some extra time ensuring that the diagrams were well-put out instead of assuming that the reader knew everything. Additionally, some topics, such as the Method of Sections, lacked explanatory depth and I would've appreciated it if the author had gone a little further into its technique instead of just glancing over it. However, when all's said and done, this is still a fairly good book for an introductory course in Statics and Engineering. However, I think there are probably better alternatives out there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book is excellent for either a first-year graduate student or an experienced CFDer. It covers all the necessary contents in a concise way. In particular, the finite volume method is explained well enough for you to write your own CFD code. The last chapter covers development of a unified method, which works for all-speed flows, including both incompressible and compressible flows. I highly recommend this book, not only as a graduate-level textbook but also a permanent reference for your personal library.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for the experienced
hi all,
this book is not appropriate for the beginners to CFD so i don't recommend it for the instructors who are looking for a introduction book. The tensor notationis also not easy to grasp for the not experienced. Besides the language of the book is not clear and not enough to let the reader apply without referring to another book. This is probably because the book has covered a lot of CFD concepts so deep explanation on every item is not provided.
However I would recommend this book for experienced CFD'ers since it covers many concepts and it can be used as a good referring material. ... Read more

Product Description
"Covering the latest issues and achievements, this well documented, precisely presented text is timely and suitable for graduate and upperundergraduate students in knowledge engineering, intelligent systems,AI, neural networks, fuzzy systems, and related areas. The author's goalis to explain the principles of neural networks and fuzzy systems and todemonstrate how they can be applied to building knowledge-based systemsfor problem solving. Especially useful are the comparisons betweendifferent techniques (AI rule-based methods, fuzzy methods, connectionist methods, hybrid systems) used to solve the same or similarproblems." -- Anca Ralescu, Associate Professor of Computer Science,University of Cincinnati

Neural networks and fuzzy systems are different approaches tointroducing human-like reasoning into expert systems. This text is thefirst to combine the study of these two subjects, their basics and theiruse, along with symbolic AI methods to build comprehensive artificialintelligence systems. In a clear and accessible style, Kasabov describesrule- based and connectionist techniques and then their combinations, with fuzzy logic included, showing the application of the differenttechniques to a set of simple prototype problems, which makescomparisons possible. A particularly strong feature of the text is thatit is filled with applications in engineering, business, and finance. AIproblems that cover most of the application-oriented research in thefield (pattern recognition, speech and image processing, classification, planning, optimization, prediction, control, decision making, and gamesimulations) are discussed and illustrated with concrete examples.Intended both as a text for advanced undergraduate and postgraduatestudents as well as a reference for researchers in the field ofknowledge engineering, Foundations of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, and Knowledge Engineering has chapters structured for various levelsof teaching and includes original work by the author along with theclassic material. Data sets for the examples in the book as well as anintegrated software environment that can be used to solve the problemsand do the exercises at the end of each chapter are available freethrough anonymous ftp.Amazon.com Review
Here we have a comprehensive, problem-oriented, engineeringperspective on the uses of neural nets, fuzzy systems, and hybridsthat emphasizes practical solutions to everyday artificialintelligence (AI) problems over abstract theoreticalnoodling. Intended for upper-division students and postgraduates whoneed a solid grounding in knowledge engineering, Foundations ofNeural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, and Knowledge Engineering is stilluseful as a reference for professionals and even as a text foradvanced students in the lower levels.

Taking problems as diverseas soil classification and speech recognition, Kasabov shows therelative merits and failings of the different architectures andhybrids through examples and problems to solve. Organized as atextbook, the first two chapters cover the field as a whole andpresent traditional AI approaches to knowledge engineering. Subsequentchapters examine the particulars of fuzzy systems, neural networks, hybrids, and new models.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a handbook, not a good book
I don't understand the gap between the two group of reviews ( 5 stars and 1 star). As other reviewer said, this book is just a list of techniques without proper examples and without proper math. I understood a couple because I already knew about them. If I would try to use any of the techniques I couldn't. There is more to an algorithm than half a page of description. Where are the examples, the ups and downs, the math justification ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, useful!
If you read this book, you won't get example C code snippits like other books have. However you will get an excellent understanding of neural networks and fuzzy systems. This book is very well written, and has lots of information! With the information in this book you could write your own code snippits and really understand how it works, rather than just using the code! I highly reccommend this book if you interested in artificial intelligence. It isn't "dry" like some books, and has examples of uses, as well as how well they work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful book!
I am finishing my degree in environmental engineering at the Politecnico of Milan, Italy. I used this book during a project about adaptive control using neural networks applied to wastewater treatment plant's operation unit. I find it very useful; it is clear and it is possible to find together with the theory practical applications and datasets. In an easy way it shows a mental scheme of artificial intelligence foundations.
