Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A145724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Two recent trends have raised concerns about the security and stability of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. The first is a move to define standard interfaces and communications protocols in support of cross-vendor compatibility and modularity. The second is a move to connect nodes in a SCADA system to open networks such as the Internet. Recent failures of critical infrastructure SCADA systems highlight these concerns. To ensure continued operations in times of crisis, SCADA systems, particularly those operating in our critical infrastructure, must be secured. Developing an abstract generic framework for defining and understanding SCADA systems is a necessary first step. A framework can provide the tools to understand the system's functions and capabilities, and how components in the system relate and interface with each other. This thesis examines and describes SCADA systems, their components, and commonly used communications protocols. It presents a matrix approach to describing and defining the features, functions and capabilities of a SCADA system. Two small SCADA systems, using industry standard components and simulating real world applications, were designed and constructed for this thesis to provide context for applying the matrix approach. ... Product Description
Why purchase expensive add-on cards or bus interfaces when you can develop effective and economical data acquisition and process controls using C programs? Using the under-employed printer adapter (that is, the parallel port of your PC), you can turn your computer into a powerful tool for developing microprocessor applications. Learn how to build a complete data acquisition system and such varied applications as a CCD camera controller, a photometer interface, and a wave form generator. The book also covers the enhanced parallel port (EPP), the extended capabilities port (ECP), interfacing analog-to-digital converters, and data acquisition under Linux. This extraordinary software approach to interfacing through the parallel port will be especially appealing to programmers involved in control systems design and device development, as well as to those who work with real-time and embedded systems.;

Key topics include; the Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP), Extended Communications Port (ECP), Analog/Digital Converters (ADC and DAC), adding bits to the parallel port, hosting an EPROM emulator, connecting to an external microprocessor, and generating digital waveforms. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Programming the Parallel Port
I wanted to know if and how I could use the parallel port to input data from my old Heathkit weather station. It is a free running system that displays in and out door temperatures, barometric pressure and wind speed and direction. It stores the maximum and minimum values of the above too.If I could get the data into my PC, I could archive and analyze it.This book helped me understand the port data lines and how they are used to talk to the peripheral connected to it.It is an old book, Copyright 1998, so the sample programs are in C language and I have not learned to use 'C' yet. I still have to build the interface box but it does look promising. I have Windows XP Home ED. and a 'Home-brew' PC. running at 2 G Hz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I found this book very useful. I am a master degree student and I recommend this book. The author explains all the important things to work with the parallel port.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, direct, effective book
This is a book written by a person that clearly understands his job. It is also fairly complete in its scope (the use of paralell port in data acquisition and control) and simple to follow. Almost immediately you get suggestions to fullfill your needs. It is an ideal book in two situations, I think: if you are begining a project and have not a lot of experience or if you are just studying. Nobody will loose having this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent approach to data acqusition
Dr. Gadre gives a very useful approach to using the parallel port as a general-purpose data acquisition bus. Another review of this book mentioned that it was light on ECP & EPP coverage. While yes, the chapter devoted to this is short, the material presented in that chapter is used later in the book in specific examples. Also, coverage is not limited to the DOS/BIOS environment, there is a chapter on using the parallel port under Linux. While some of the material is a little bit dated ("newer" Linux kernels according to the text are those from 1.2 on) this must be moderated by the understanding that the book was published in 1998 and undoubtedly written to a large extent in the years prior. In fact, a great deal of data acquisition even today still takes place within DOS, so any DOS-related information is still very useful, and the electronic circuits presented are virtually timeless. I didn't notice in particular any parts listed which weren't available, and most would probably be best emulated in a PLD today anyway.

My main problem with the book is the number of typos I've found so far, which is why I've withheld a star.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful book
This book with its very clear exposition on the basics of using parallel port as a data acquisition and control structure makes it very easy to develop numerous applications for the PC environment easily. The book's clear explanations make it very easy to go from a primitive state to a fairly advanced state, quickly and unambigously. Although a notable gap seems to be the details of the newer parallel port modes such as ECP and operating system and application level programming for the same, the book is very useful from the point of view of using the parallel port for data gathering and analysis. I would recommend this book as almost mandatory reading for someone wishing to use the parallel port on the PC. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A tinkers guide for beginning PC hardware interfacing.
I first purchased this book as a technology student with an interest in PC hardware. His no-nonsense approach allows even a beginner to connect to his/her PC with little(but not zero) risk to their system.

You will find that complex projects are replaced by simple circuits to speed understanding. While there are a few project plans given, this book is more about ideas and building blocks. His use of the printer port removes the need of having to pull the case off your computer, thus providing you a great place to put your circuit.

This book will show you the basics of CHEAPLY learning to build BLOCK CIRCUITS using simple, well written C programmes and common electronic components.

But be forewarned, this book is technical. If you're unsure about the difference between a FET and a BJT, you may find the book difficult but not impossible. But if you understand some digital logic, simple structured C programming, and not afraid to connect half a LM556 for a LM5! 55, it's a great place to start learning.

It's a must for HAMs. Electronics, Physics, and Engineering Students will also find it valuable.

If you are a university science student, imagine not having to watch a thermometer but automatically log data at regular intervals!! Well worth the 12-15 bucks. ... Read more
